    Interesting how the whole show is them arguing over what gender they should be. And then in the end, nobody finds out. It really shows human curiosity over the subject, but also in the end does it really matter? Good points about exposure playing a part in gender role stereotypes as the generations grow up

    this episode was wayyyyy ahead of its time. as a little kid who had no knowledge of gender stuff, ESPECIALLY being nonbinary, and this was a fascinating episode for me. flash forward and i'm a proudly nonbinary adult, and looking back on this episode and how it made me feel is really interesting
    also, zoit is just an adorable character, their design and personality are just delightful! love that lil friend

    I actually love the look of those "girl" Nerf toys. Gender stuff aside, I just think they have a more interesting aesthetic than the "boy" ones. As long as it was the exact same toy functionally, I probably would have wanted one in that style if I'd had the choice when I was a kid. It would've been cool if they just released them as alternate designs in the main toy line without making it a new "for girls!" line, because stereotypically girly designs should be for everyone just as much as stereotypically boyish designs.
    (My mom dressed me in yellow as a baby too. Yellow and green were the typical colors that parents got everything in beforehand if they didn't know what the baby would be before it was born.)

      Agreed. The ending itself felt an awful a lot like, "lol, the cishets are not okay" because the debate started all over again now on heteronormative lines. The episode is solid, especially if you realized that folks can be non-binary. If it led to self discovery in the viewer, then the episode did it's job.

    • @MsDudette21
      @MsDudette21 Год назад

      @@noireisbest6786 lol nonbinary isn't real. it's obvious the episode is saying u dont have to be strictly manly or girly and u can like things typically associated with the other sex. but cuz this show is fictional, they can explain the message in a differnt way...hence the nonbinary character. kids will get the moral regardless. but kids then weren't dumb enough to think they could be neither gender. now we got grown adults and teens saying they are. u rly think they were talking about nonbinary in humans (which doesnt exist) in a show form 20 yrs ago?
      and before u say theres a difference between sex and gender...well then why should i refer to seomone as their 'chosen' gender rather than what their biological sex is? last time i checked the two sexes have many differences that can't be ignored. sex trumps your 'gender' so gender isnt relevant at all. do u go to the doctor and say you're nonbinary expecting your doctor to ignore health issues that might pertain to your biological sex?

      @ravenfrancis1476 Год назад +3

      @@MsDudette21 I love that it can be read both ways. I definitely see the character as being non-binary because by definition they didn’t know what their gender was but of course I didn’t know the term as a kid but also this is more to teach the lesson that specific interests don’t make you that associated gender.
      NOTE I’m a conservative saying this but also what can you refer to Zoit as. This is one of those instances where I can truly not feel right calling them by either gender. Funny because it’s a damn cartoon.

    This was an iconic episode that is truly understated. I have always remembered this since I first saw it.
    Zoit has a great sense of humor - they clearly see's these other kids as culturally different who has yet to understand these concepts and finds humor in them gendering their activities since both groups have individuals who enjoy them regardless of gender.
    So when Zoit jokes the kids won't know until they have a crush on one of them it could be because Zoit had picked a gender but has no need to disclose it unless they're romantic with the person - which means Zoit could still be gay or straight or bisexual.
    Since Zoit has chosen not to disclose, it does make them non-binary I'm social settings and perhaps only those on a need to know basis will ever know.

    Even after all these years, this episode has always stuck out in my mind. I don't remember the opening theme song, I don't remember the names of the characters, I don't even remember some of the actual characters. But I remember this episode and can still give a beat for beat summary of the plot after only having seen the episode once when I was four. It's oddly progressive for the time.
    The fact that there's a character that doesn't identify as male or female but gets to pick which to be after a birthday, the boys and the girls try to influence them to pick the gender of their group so they can have an extra person to hang out with, and the twist is we never find out they say everyone can if one of them ask them out on a date and everyone immediately switches gears with the boys wanting to ask "her" out and the girls wanting to ask "him" out. It's just interesting they managed to do this with respect from a show that started in 2001.

    This is a really good video, and you touch on something many people don't understand about themselves or think about because it's so ingrained in our culture: do gender stereotypes make us (decide) our gender because it's so ingrained into us, or do we decide what our gender is and fit ourselves to the stereotypes/only expose ourselves/get exposed to the stereotypes. Your episodes on gender are very well done and interesting.

    • @MysticMyths
      @MysticMyths 2 года назад +1

      I worded that ^ a bit poorly, what I also mean is cis people at times become afraid to discuss gender and how they identify outside of the stereotypes because for many that's so ingrained that's how they know which they are, but they don't examine why they know, like the chicken and the egg: which came first? Feeling like a boy/girl then came the liking of blue and trucks/pink and dolls, or the like of it then being told that's a boy/girl thing and therefore we are?

    I already left a longer comment about this episode on Jordan's video but to sum it up here...
    I find it weird how this episode is seemingly, and I believe accidentally Pro-Trans while simultaneously being anti-gay with the last line of the episode implying that who Zoit develops a crush on would be telling of what gender Zoit choose to be... totally ignoring that he could be a boy and still have a crush on another boy or she could be a girl and still have a crush on another girl.
    I totally forgot about the kids arguing over which ONE of them Zoit would have a crush on which also means this episode is setting up unrealistic expectations that Zoit only can have one crush when in fact a person have multiple crushes through out their adolescence before finding the person they're going to spend the rest of their life with. And if Zoit turns out to be Bi the same confusion about "Are you a boy or a girl" could occur all over again.

      why are u comparing today's standards to a tv show from 20 years ago? rly? this episode had nothing to do with being trans because that wasn't accepted then. it was about accepting people being nuanced with how masculine or feminine they are. the moral is that not all guys are strictly manly and not all girls are strictly girly. its ok to like things that are moreso associated with the opposite sex. but this is a fictional show about aliens so they can make it someone having neither sex 'real'. but u have to apply it to reality. but of course everyone is applying today's standards to then. no one is saying you are nonbinary cuz u arent. grow up. its ok to like things that opposite sex typically associates with. duh!

    (Long rant ahead, summary: I grew up outside the gender norm and people took it upon themselves to catergize and sexualize me as a young lady. It was weird and alientating and turns out I'm just asexual and neurodivergent, not a mistake or "not like other girls"... Gender roles are made up and the points don't matter when the children feel like they're wrong or bad for not fitting in.)
    I'm a queer woman of color who uses she/they pronouns to make it easier on people. I've been asked, accused, and harassed about my gender identity since I was 5. Do you know how much pressure is put on girls to act like girls? And when they don't act like girls OR boys, how weird and almost hostile they're treated?
    Seriously, I thought I was trans for like a year and half when I was 13 because everyone kept telling me I was weird and wrong as a girl. Getting told I had "good birthing hips" at 12 years old was probably a big reason I became more masculine presenting in high school, because I was 12 and that's fucking gross. I didn't feel like I was wrong or bad, I just didn't like makeup or dress up or the colors pink or purple (mostly because they wash me out, I look yellow or green with those colors, I stick to neutrals and deep reds) and I didn't like playing "girly games". Which I did, I played dress up games and sims online. BUT I also didn't like sports or bugs or "boy games". I liked puzzles, reading, and listening to music. Girly music? I liked alt rock, nu metal, and punk music. I also like pop music. Was I non-binary or trans?
    Growing up, my very existence was "challenging" gender roles. I got in trouble at school for wearing pants to my high school graduation ceremony. I got laughed at in college when I told a group of girls on my floor that I didn't like makeup and they told me "yeah, it's probably a lot of effort for you" which... wtf, rude. I got asked multiple times, through my 5 years of undergrad, if I was a trans man or trans woman by multiple different "allies" on campus. Being called ma'am and "young man" throughout college also didn't help. I was the first person to be excited by the addition of pronouns onto badges. Because watching people struggle with my pronouns was exhausting.
    Anyway: gendering likes and dislikes is weird and backwards. Because many societies have conflicting gender roles, which makes sense because they're fake. I don't have to like dresses or heels or makeup to be a woman, nor do those dislikes make me a boy. I'm a woman, I just look different than your weird idealized version of a lady. I'm not a "tomboy" or a "soft butch" or whatever weird terms we have for people, just a woman with a personality not dependent on my reproductive potential.

      @@austindrinksfanta I always like to bring up my personal gender experience, as a cis woman "accused" of being trans. It's one of those things I bring up because a lot of people misunderstand gender and sex and how those ideals and roles are pushed on kids. Since I have the privilege as a cis woman, I'll use it to show other cis people that their opinions on the "trans agenda" is backwards.

    Even to this day I am bamboozled by Lego Friends. I follow Lego a lot and still have no idea why it's so popular.
    I differences between Friends and any other theme are a bit more than what you mentioned but still not that extreme. There are the mini dolls (as you said), but Friends sets also have lot more flowers, hearts, and butterflies in their imagery are predominantly colored with a lot more pinks, purples, and lighter shades of blues and greens. They follow the same pastel color scheme that is ubiquitous in other popular female marketed themes like Barbie, My Little Pony, and Littlest Pet Shop.
    I also think thematically that Lego Friends is different from it's competition because while most other themes focus on conflict (EX: Fighting a bad guy, catching a criminal, rescuing someone) Lego friends is way more slice of life. A Friends police station isn't on the prowl for the latest criminal with some thieves locked up in jail like a Lego City police station would be, a Friends policy station is just a calm, ordinary police station.
    But structurally, you are right the sets aren't really different from say a typical Lego city set. But the fact that they sell so well tells me that a lot of girls must really like the mini dolls, the colors, or the lack of conflict in the sets. It has to be one or multiple of these qualities that make them choose Lego Friends over Lego City or Ninjago or anything else. And it's these same factors that are dissuading boys from buying Lego friends sets.
    And maybe it's because I'm not a girl, but I never saw the appeal of Lego Friends. Girls should be able to play with Lego as much they want but I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would pick a Lego Friends set over a Lego City, Star Wars, Ninjago set, etc. It just doesn't seem as cool or interesting as all those other options but money talks and I guess Lego knew what they were doing when they made their smash hit.
    Whether it's something intrinsic or just societal norms, a lot of little girls seem to like dolls, pastel colors, hearts, flowers, rainbows, and a lack of conflict. And a lot of little boys like action, adventure, darker colors, and conflict in their toys. And if that's what each respective gender _generally_ likes, then I can't really get mad at Lego for capitalizing on it.

    I agree with your analysis of music today, it’s by no means in depth but you kind of tapped onto something I have always wondered about which is why most of the producers of popular songs today are men. When I used soundation, an amateur music production studio, I noticed that the overwhelming majority of their users were men and that was especially true when you looked at only the people making their own clips rather than just using loops or samples. I also noticed that several of the people there believed it was because women just aren’t good at producing music or mixing it like men are, and I have no idea where that idea came from except that in psychology, there’s a concept where essentially if for example most music producers are men then people are generally going to assume it’s because they’re more qualified or enjoy the craft of producing music more but really I think it’s because of exactly what you talked about. I think girls just aren’t encouraged to make their own music or express themselves in that way as much as they are encouraged to enjoy singing and maybe songwriting since I think there are at least an equal number of women and male songwriters. Idk life is weird

A lot of the time whenever a line launches a "for girls" version its just the start of marketing the regular version as "for boys only", when girls already played with it before. I feel like these kinds of things are just shallow cash grabs to make more products and thus more money, rather than a genuine attempt at diversity of any sort.

      When i heard of lego friends i didnt think of it as a "for girls" lego i thought of it of more as a kids playset of legos like a lego doll house more than an actual lego build because when i was a kid in the early 2000s i remember having pink lego windows and doors and stuff that was "girly" and also typical lego but lego friends came out when i was an adult

    I remember stealing my younger brother's Nerf guns when we were little - when I saw Nerf Rebelle on TV, I was smitten. But that was just because the colour purple has my heart on a string.
    My parents never got any because we already had more than enough chaos with toy guns in the house as it was.

    So a quick comment relating to the discussion on Girl Nerf and Girl Legos. In the case of Nerf the only difference is the color choice and design, but the aspect and enjoyment of the toy stays the same, that being shooting people. If your interested in nerf no matter what gender you are your probably going to prefer the "boy" designs as it has a bit more of that aggressive and powerful style compared to that of the "female" designs which has a more sleek and smooth look.
    With Legos the difference is the setting and story that the toys set up. Lets just take your images as example at 7:32 and 7:33.
    The first image looks like what I would assume either a vacation setting where you hike up a mountain, enjoy the view, travel down the zip line, and relax in a cottage. Maybe you save those lammas? But either way it has a very relaxing setting.
    The second set on the other hand has monkey men with spears and staffs, traps on the mountain, cruddly built ragts, giving off much more of an air of action, adventure, and combat.
    As the years go on I think we are beginning to have a society were we are marketing more to Masculine people and Feminin people rather then boys or girls to become more inviting to the Tomboys and the...... crap, I actually don't know what the term is for a feminine guy.... Tomgirl? Either way I don't see society changing enough where masculine toys or entertainment isn't dominated by boys and vice versa. Though we all have a pinch of one or the other, I kind of like how the show points it out with each guy enjoying one of the activities the girls do, for me it would probably be the Jazzersizing lol.

It’s character exploration is subtle and surprisingly nuanced for a Canadian project aimed at kids to young adults. I could rave about this show for hours honestly!
    Edit: thank you so much for the heart, I would’ve thought with how briefly you mentioned the show in this video that I’d get lost in the chaos. Lovely work as always. Can’t wait to see what projects you have in store

    Gender neutral bathrooms existed in 2002 tho? They're called family restrooms or unisex or single occupant restrooms they have the sign with the man next to the woman next to the person in the wheelchair (the third gender, disabled). It wasn't a transgender acceptance thing it was for parents with kids of a different gender than them.

    for such an f-ed up character they do well at adding all the layers and backstory to explain his actions whilst also not justifying/absolving all of them.

I suppose it depends who you talk to...? realistically though, yeah, there's no such thing as boy music, or girl music it's just stupid dark age stuff.

    I’ll be honest... never heard of this show. I think that’s just because I’m younger than you tho. Yeah I was alive in 2002 but I might’ve been too young.
    Anyway i agree that it’s weird that people place their gender identity on their interests back in those days. I think putting things in space or a different world nowadays gives more leeway to writers to make characters gay or non binary or any other identity. So it was def a missed opportunity in my book! Imo I think the episode is okay. Like in terms of what kids should know, they should just know that non-binary people exist. Kinda like how shows would teach kids about Jewish people existing (like Robbie Shapiro. He’s Jewish but his whole identity isn’t Jewish) they should just know that people of other various identities exist and how to be respectful (like maybe a non-binary person who wants to be an aspiring dancer. Their arc will be on their aspirations and maybe one or two episodes on non-binary problems like gender neutral bathrooms).

    • @thejuicyjedijester4901
      @thejuicyjedijester4901 2 года назад

      Non binary isn't real though. It's just a male or female feeling insecure or inadequate about themselves at times and pretending to be the other sex just to make themselves feel better.
      Only in fiction can non binary exist.

    Honestly this episode was amazing for its time, and even still resonates nowadays. It has a lot of really sexist moments and awful treatment of Zoit, which are all really hard for a nonbinary person to watch, honestly. But every one of these moments is shown to be wrong, they only show the characters being so awful to really drive home the message that what they're doing IS awful, and Zoit isn't the one who's in the wrong here. I especially liked that they not only showed that Zoit didn't fit their stereotypes, but that even the boys and girls pushing these stereotypes didn't fit perfectly into them themselves and would probably be happier if they just let themselves enjoy their fave hobbies without worrying about this stuff. And honestly the ending where Zoit's like "screw you I have a biological sex now but I'm still nonbinary" was one hell of a power move! (even if it was bizarre to have the show being so progressive towards the idea of gender nonconformity while still being all "everyone is always straight tho")
    So yeah, I used to get really upset watching this episode as a lil closeted kid who'd experienced similar bullying, but it still opened my eyes to the possibilities of being myself and I'm forever grateful to it!
    Still sucks that Zoit never got to be a returning character tho, they were awesome and I wish I could be so take-no-shits about bigotry!

    I think male and female music can be distinquished between its relationship to power and sex. Women music has more details about the actual sex and from that we are supposed to infer that they are powerful. Man music has less details about sex but focuses more in the power this man must have to have all this sex. Like a male song my say "your girl is in my bed" and thats the end of the sexual content. Female songs would be like "Your man is clapping my cheeks". These are very similar but one is focused on the power dynamics of someone being somewhere under your orders, while the other is about sex happening but its like their intention or desire isn't even there.

    Lego tried to sell gender neutrally but it just didn't work
    Lego friends works because its shifts the focus from building ( Spatial awareness) to making up stories ( Emotional intelligence) and men/ womens minds work differently thats why trans people exist, lets say your afab but you have slightly more testosterone then the general female population
    That starts to effect you youll form friend circles differently ( typically females Make friends by sharing secrets while males make friends through competition) and for some effects the way they see there own body
    With that said Brands don't split their products from male to female for the fun of it they do it because it works
    the reason that nerf guns didn't work isn't because girls play with nerf (there is a very small demographic) the problem is girls don't want to play with guns no matter how many stickers you put on them that was the difference between nerf and lego the same way they tried to feminize a beer brand but it didn't go anywhere because women don't want to drink beer
    ( Everything I said is *on average* which is the only thing that matters when talking about a generalized concept)

  • @segevstormlord3713
    @segevstormlord3713 2 года назад

    5:35 or so - if you can choose your gender, and you know your preference, why would you choose "gay?" Assume, for a moment, you're talking about your whole species having this option. If it's about "how you feel" and not "what you like," that...first off, doesn't make a lot of sense, because how do you "feel" male or female without it corresponding to your biology or your preferences? But let's go with that. If your whole species can pick its sex, why would you deliberately pick a sex that is the one you're sexually attracted to? It seems counterproductive.
    But I have to hand it to this episode for doing what sci-fi does best: explore these kinds of questions by taking advantage of the ability to introduce alien (pun intended) qualities that make them stand out as something unavoidable.
