About a year ago Blizzard promised that they will remove all race-class restrictions and just like many of the recent patches 10.1.5 is continuing on this promise. We are getting warlocks for all the currently available races which is excellent news.
However some of the more problematic anti warlock races are getting warlocks which is really conflicting with the lore. We got Mag'har orcs which is essentially orcs before fel, we are getting draenei the biggest enemies of fel now wielding fel and previously we've known them as the man'ari. However most interestingly we are getting lightforged draenei warlocks which really is about as natural as shadow priests wielding the light. So how are we going to explain all these new race/class combos in the lore?wo

      No it doesn't.
WoW made a big song and dance about the Light having one path. Allowing Lightforged to use Fel contradicts that. The same could also be said of Void Elves, but they're already warlocks, so it's not protesting something that isn't in the game yet. This contradicts the "clash between the cosmic forces" narrative being pushed from Legion - Shadowlands if they can draw on each others' power.
Not to mention that would mean Illidan got riled up over nothing when Xe'ra tried to Lightforge him because he'd not only still be doing the same thing (his goal lined up with her prophecy), he'd have still been able to hold on to Fel magic.
The Mag'har are also a stretch, because Mag'har means "uncorrupted" so technically, by becoming Warlocks they cease to be Mag'har. The other conflicts are more cultural.

It does make sense. These are people that were stuck in space ships for thousands of years seeing their comrades getting wiped out by Fel magic. The problem with Spriest is the spec in general, it is just a justification for undead, and now even velfs to be priests, and u need something for others. As each race have different approach to the classes, which the gameplay class design does not reflect. Draenei and LFD Spriests (and monks) are their soulpriests, who cares for souls of their dead. I think the new warlock races, and really all races eventually getting all classes, makes sense when you think about the influence that the player characters and their associated NPCs (in the case of the warlocks, the Council of the Black Harvest) would have on the cultures of those races. Imagine being a draenei, and you saw this human warlock do all the world saving that the player characters do between The Burning Crusade and Dragonflight (14 years in game lore). You'd probably think by that point "huh, warlocks aren't all bad", and some might want to be warlocks themselves. Obviously this logic is more applicable to races that have been exposed to the Heroes of Azeroth(TM) longer, but the moment they join the Alliance or the Horde they are exposed to a more open culture, so long-term exposure may not be necessary for a newly joined race to think "maybe this path is actually okay and my parents were wrong"

As a warlock lore expert…(back when I used to play so I’m rusty) all of these new additions to warlocks are lore capable, the best I can describe this situation is it’s possible not probable.
Night elf’s warlocks could easily be described as individuals who went to find the illidari and became to understand the fel and demons without the physical ability of demon hunters. Illidari aligned warlocks are not new.
Draenei and Lightforged Draenei are different, the warlocks among them are likely as your new lore stated new initiates to the craft, legion spies turned loyal after its defeat or do not forget the possible manari seeking his people for a version of redemption. Velen including the Lightforged has to leave a significant part of their people behind for risk of being caught, these were likely potential willing followers stranded on Argus like the faction we find there. You can be forcibly converted to demon hood and corruption but with the legions defeat, how many forced converts now stand to rejoin their people, possibly using the powers they have come to know for ten thousand plus years? Would Velen forsake his people who came to him cursed with demon hood because he forsook them last time?

    A few things:
Warlocks are not 'accepted' by most races. With the exception of the Forsaken and Blood Elves during the time of BC, essentially all warlocks were individuals operating in the shadows of society. There is no reason every race shouldn't be able to play as warlock, except maybe the point made about Mag'har Orcs, which brings me to my next point:
Are warlocks inherently tied to fel? Aside from those who completed the green fire challenge, I don't think their magic is necessarily fel-based. Much is void-based, and they certainly enslave fel-based demons, but as far as I'm aware, they're not constantly wielding fel magic like demon hunters are. Red fire can be arcane, elemental, or possibly fel. Shadow is void. The hallmark for warlocks is "dark magic", not "fel magic". They can use a variety of dark magics.
As such, Mah'har orcs could be fine as warlocks. To me, the only race that is questionable is LF Draenei. Even that is based on the assumption that light and void are incompatible just because they're opposites, which is disproven by discipline priests.

  • @echolocationn
    @echolocationn Год назад

    Here's how I see it:
Kul Tiran: Vrykul/Human hybrids who both use fel, so why not.
Pandaren: Pandaren seek knowledge and balance, so they would be able to control the corrupting urges of the fel on their minds and use it for good.
Zandalari: A bit rare, but they've used a lot of dark magics in the past, and have been around Horde Warlocks for two expansions now, so why not.
Mag'Har: I agree this is a bit of a stretch, however they have used dark magics as well in their past (void priests from the Shadowmoon Orcs). They've also been around for two expansions with other Orc Warlocks. Also, it was the Orcs drinking of Mannoroth's blood that turned their skin green, not the usage of fel magic. Also, not all Warlocks use fel magic, as affliction Warlocks use dark powers. So, it's a bit of a stretch, but I can see it work... plus, their 10% pet hp racial would be great for Warlocks.
Tauren/HMT: Grimtotems and Bloodtotems. Enough said.
Night Elf: OK. I actually don't have much of a problem with this, and here's why: Night Elves have been around Alliance Warlocks for decades at this point. They've seen corrupting influences of fel on people, but they've also seen people control it. Not only that, but they lost their home and potentially know that their deity, Elune literally sacr>ficed their people for essence to empower the Winter Queen's tree to keep Mr. Nipply in the Maw, but instead went to actually empower Mr. Nipply because Elune didn't actually do any investigating at all. All of that would make anyone dark, jaded, and ready to forsake their deity. So, partaking of Warlocks isn't that big of a stretch at all.
OK... now to the two that I believe are completely lore breaking: Draenei & LFD Warlocks. No other race has as much of a history with fighting against the Burning Legion than these two. For the Draenei, the Legion destroyed not only one, but two of their homes. The LFD has been literally locked in a 1000 year war with the Legion on Argus. They've also seen how corrupting the usage of fel is on the Draenei. There is literally no way that Blizz can paint this change that doesn't completely destroys the lore.

    @ahealthkit2745 Год назад +1

I think the supposed lore issue with Mag'har orc warlocks is something of a small lore detail that is being blown massively out of proportion. The entire 'fel magic turns orcs green' thing is sort of a myth, because the only origin we have for that is Gul'dan tempting the clan leaders with Mannoroth's blood. Which... is not the same as a warlock casting a few fel-fire spells (which, they can't even cast until they complete the green fire questline)
I think Gul'dan turned green because of his choice to drink Mannoroth's blood, which corrupted him, turned him green and gave him blood lust. The same as for the other OG horde leaders, who also drank the demon's blood. The orcs on Azeroth now are only green because of their ancestry and connection to those horde leaders. Because they are descendents of those who originally drank Mannoroth's blood, they are still 'corrupt' to this day.
Admittedly, you could use the same rationale to complain about Felorcs not being in the horde. In theory, a green skinned orc could use enough felmagic casually as a warlock to eventually go full fel-orc mode, with spikes and red skin.

Most of these races make sense, but the Maghar Orcs and Lightforged draenei are really going to have to get creative in order to be believable.
I agree that the Maghar orcs are going to be really hard to explain because of the whole "uncorrupted" thing but the Lightforged Draenei? Eh... That's going to be interesting to explain.
My explanation would be maybe someone got bitter with how the Light seems to be falling short on keeping that person's loved ones alive so then that LF Draenei is like, "Hey, that Illidan guy may be on to something..." So then they decide to start dabbling in the fel and trying to see if that will get the job done.
IDK, it's going to lead to some interesting explanations that may or may not make sense, but we should also keep in mind that warlocks, in lore, aren't just flowing out the ears. They've almost always been a small group of individuals with radical ideas that many in main stream society don't acknowledge or accept.
I mean, think about it: I seem to remember in Wow Classic that the only city that seemed to not hide their warlock trainers from prying eyes was the Undercity. Stormwind had a tavern with a secret room in it and I don't really remember where it was for Ironforge, but I don't remember it being super public. There were none in Darnassus, if I recall. Orgrimmar's trainers were in a place called "The Cleft of Shadow" (nuff said). And I don't remember if Thunderbluff had any warlock trainers, but if they did have any they would be in a dark cave that the Forsaken set up shop in. The Undercity seemed to be the only Classic city to be just open and out there with their warlocks because you could just be walking along and look over and be like, "Oh hey, there's a demonic summoning circle and a bunch of warlocks." And then you go about your day.
The point I'm trying to make is that aside from maybe the Forsaken, nobody seems to just parade their warlocks around, which tells me that being a warlock is not necessarily something that society is totally cool with but it's more of a personal choice of a few select individuals that went against the grain, so I can see that being the LF Draenei's way of being a warlock.
Still not sure about the Maghar Orcs though, because can you really still call them "Maghar" if they're using fel magic?

I think the simplest explanation for Mag'har Warlocks is just that they don't outright use fel magic. Overall, different magics can perform the same functions. To say that a Mag'har warlock enslaves demons and curses things with void magic wouldn't be a stretch. In fact, it might even be how all other player warlocks work- those spells use shadow graphics, not fel. Maybe their fire spells are elemental based instead of fel based. Who's to say?
The only issue there will be is when Mag'har warlocks complete the green fire challenge. That quest literally has you corrupting yourself with fel and then proceding to wield felfire spells. For any standard Mag'har warlock with red fire, I don't see an issue.

From both game and lore perspective, yes please! Everything for everyone. You are forgetting that an individual (in this case, my character) does not have to be límited by his origins, where he comes from, his race and what not, even in thid kind of restrictive fantasy world, if someone wants to be something, they will find a way. Example, one light forged warlock is a guy that got fed up by the whole light worshipping thing (and he's kind of bad using it) so he finds the whole warlock discipline and falls in love with it, the power is intoxicating and he's good at it. He doesn't care what anyone thinks or says about him, he's complete now, alliance, draenei, doesn matter who, everyone now is just an avenue for more power. Something like that, and yes you can have another character that uses fel for good, etc. I can also easily imagine an origin story for an undead paladin, you could even have some quest line involving Calia where you find you were in fact a paladin in life, and you help some people even when they hate you, proving that there is still good in you and you are worth of the light and blah blah. Same thing for nature and druids, its only a matter of will at this point.

No amount of interest or dedication to some non-standard practice would allow for something like a void elf or undead paladin. The magics these races are infused with are just incompatible with Light. And for warlocks, A Mag'har orc would turn green over time simply practicing fel magic. Fel radiation turns orcs green, that's just a fact of their biology. You can't be a warlock and stay a brown orc for long. Mag'har also means "uncorrupted," specifically in relation to fel magic. It's literally the reason they're a separate group of orcs to begin with. The idea that one would ever become a warlock and would still be allowed to call themselves Mag'har in any way whatsoever is utterly moronic.

It feels like each of the Pantheons will be composed of a "God" who is a combination of that Pantheons force, and one other Force. Think Winter Queen being both Death & Life, for example, plus one Pure one. This would imply we are going to see a Pantheon linked to the Light, one of who's member's will be in part Fel. Which implies their may actually be a form of Fel Light. Thjis is just specualtion though, looking at the werid direction that the lore appears to be going iun, and I'm not really a fan of the Shadowlands lore.
I kinda wish they would stop muddling things up so much as everything being this souless grey goo, isn't really appealing, but they certainly aren't going to revurse these decisions. With Highborne being exiled, who's to say that some went a different path than heading Silvermoon. Many would try to find their new source of power, which the strongest is fel and void, as they experienced. Same with Dire Maul/Eldre'thalas, I would expect many of them to become hungry for void power after consuming Immol'thar for so long. With Illidari/Demon hunters being basically 'warlocks in warrior form', which I never really understood how and why a mage 'lost their powers' when fel is basically corrupted arcane. They still use arcane based powers, runes on their bodies, mana crystals... But yet warlocks are still capable?
To me, in RP... DH are very much capable of being '"warlocks", if they were mages beforehand.
But the Lightforged... Nuh, that doesn't make a lot of sense... BUT there is red/charcoal skin coming for Draenei in the next patch, so...
