  • We're back with another round of the My Arcade micro player Space Invaders saga. Leave it to GenXGrownUp to leave no stone unturned. One of our viewers pointed out an issue with this Space Invaders machine from My Arcade and we had to investigate. Is it possible that just like the My Arcade micro player Galaga machine, the My Arcade micro player Pac Man, and others that this too is a FAKE ROM?!? Well we're gonna find out as we put the My Arcade micro player Space Invaders machine to the 23 test to see if this belongs in the My Arcade Namco Museum.

    Okay, doing a little research there was changes made to later rom revisions of Space Invaders. And looking at this, it’s clearly a later rom revision because it has a 5 digit score, which is something only later Space Invaders cabinets had, the earlier revisions only had a 4 digit score....so I’m convinced the reason there was no 300 points of the UFO is because of the fact it’s a later rom revision!

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  4 года назад +6

      That would certainly make sense.

    • @SuperJumsNelson
      @SuperJumsNelson 4 года назад +3

      Problem with that. I got several versions of Space Invaders up on MAME with the 5 digit scores, and was able to pull off the trick in all them.
      I did also notice a few things different from the My Arcade machine compared to the arcade rom.
      1. During the "Game Over" screen, the lives are shown at the bottom, which they don't show here.
      2. The "*TAITO CORPORATION*" text isn't shown in a few places where it does show in the arcade rom, such as the score advance table. Although, it does show in places like the inset coin screen.
      3. This is the smallest difference, but the "Game Over" screen lasts much longer in the My Arcade machine compared to the original where the player gets hit much faster.
      4. The biggest thing that makes me more convinced this is a custom rom, is when inserting a credit in the arcade rom, the screen does a wipe animation with the text appearing. But in the My Arcade version, the text when inserting credit appears instantly with no animation.
      So overall, either this is a version of the game that's much more obscure, there's some emulation problems, or it's a custom rom. I did also look at the Arcade1Up machine, and those seem to match up with the arcade rom on MAME.

      GenXGrownUp Further playing it, it seems like the 300 score is actually still there, as I scored it by hitting a UFO just today. As near as I can gather is that the 23 hit rule was changed, but you can still somehow score 300 points on the UFO’s. It might be interesting if someone looked more into the code of this rom, because honestly that makes the scoring of the ufo’s even more mysterious!

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  4 года назад +2

      To top it off, the top-most invaders (the ones with the pointy heads) are only scoring 20 points rather than the advertised 30 shown on the attract screen! A scoring error? This can't possibly all be coincidence from a random revision, can it?

    • @Ultraslainmonkey

  • @fiercepunch

    I just picked one of these up and found, on mine, the 30th shot is a 300 UFO and every 15th shot after that is also 300. Death row/wall of death tactic also works and the UFO appears about every 20 seconds which is about the same as my Taito SI. As for it being a bug or cheat, the UFO scoring tactic and scoring table are detailed in Taito America's own How To Play Space Invaders: Secrets from an Expert from 1980. With the UFO scoring table it would seem like a pseudo randomization mechanism as most people are not aware of the table.

      odd, almost all extant versions and ports replicate the 23 "first gate" because it is SO well known. I can not even find a dip on later cabinets like anniversary to change this. Easy enough to patch a ROM to make it harder, smells like the manufacturer of this used a bootleg rom image, which where often deliberate "hardness hacks" to yield more money for a machine, but is this is seemingly licensed, why do that ?

  • @George-bh9wd

    My guess is it's probably some sort of error if it is an arcade rom. However, let it be known My Arcade _has_ made custom versions of games before. For example: Their Pac-Man Pocket Player features a custom version of Pac-Man made by My Arcade (Which is the same version used on their up coming 40th anniversary machine).
    They definitely know how to make custom roms, so if they did it here, especially since Space Invaders isn't a hard game to recreate, it wouldn't surprise me. At the same time however, they do have products that use arcade roms, so it could go either way.
    Overall, arcade rom or not, it's still a very good version of the game, and if it does turns out to be a custom rom, then props to them because it sure fooled me.

    for what it's worth, I played a Space Invaders at an arcade and tried this and I did get 300 points for hitting it on my 23rd shot. Doesn't mean the mini is fake. It only means that the particular rom on the machine I played on did have the 23rd shot = 300 points rom. regardless, the mini is as close as anyone can get to the real thing. It's great!

    Hello Again ! Since my last message I did some investigations, I found a so called "original TAITO space invaders" version in a remake for the Super Nintendo. The software has all the right details : it has 23 gives 300, 4 digit score, bottom that is progressively destroyed by bombs. So I thought .. This one might be the original one ! But, NO WAY. Even this one has had some modification from the original most obvious is the colored background which is a real decor in the original game, the bunker green color, but there is one detail nobody discussed so far, ie the original software must be up side down, because of the reflection in the mirror. Therefore I might be that the original ROM quickly disappeared and was replaced by versions without reflections during all these years. Now you have a manufacturer that wants to get close to the original, therefore you need the "up side down" version, which may be is not easy to find ? I do not know if it is easy or not to remake the up side down version or you have to start again from scratch ?

    This unit looks really good, but the fact that you can't consistently score 300 points for the UFO ruins the game for me. I loved counting the shots on the arcade game, and that was the key to getting really high scores.

    I wonder if that 300 score glitch was intentional. Taito has a long tradition of hidden bonuses, items, and tricks in the arcade (have you ever seen the tricks to make items appear in Bubble Bobble?).
    I would not be surprised if this is some revision of the arcade ROM. My Arcade's other recent project is the Namco Museum mini arcade machine and looks like it's using arcade ROMs for the arcade games on there (with nice audio samples). Either that or they are well done recreations.
