    Top of Appalachia is about 6500 ft. Below around 4500 there's a reservoir that collects water from multiple streams. From there, one stream goes to Asheville to the left and the rest flows down to the town and reservoir around 1000 feet. The water overflowed from 4500 ft reservoir cause it was already full from previous rains. That huge tall wall of mud and water at hurricane wind speeds came crashing 3000 feet straight down into towns. Devastating loss, and I'm frankly amazed that anyone survived.

    Well I can tell you how it happened, they had gotten a lot of rain for 2 or 3 days before Helene got there, they were already having aerial flooding, I don’t think anyone thought Helene was going to drop over 20 inches of rain in one day, the remnants of Helene is still bringing scattered rain to NC. And the reason it took so long?!?!! There’s no roads open, they either washed away or damaged so bad that it’s dangerous to drive on them, then there’s the fact that airplanes can’t land because there’s no landing strip, they’ve open a interstate finally and helicopter’s are flying in food and water constantly

While there is a small amount of truth to it, hurricanes can and will still hit us. Like i said previously, we've had 2 devastate Western NC in 35 years. Hugo hit 35 years and 5 days, IIRC, before Helene did, and both were "H" hurricanes.

  • @Celtic_Amy
    @Celtic_Amy Месяц назад +9

    It rained enough to flood before Helene. Then the hurricane dumped another 15 inches. The one town assumed the river would hit 19feet, but it hit 27 Feet. These towns are at the base of mountains. Flooding and landslides. For Asheville if you were on one side of town you could get out. Other parts of town people are cut off because the roads washed away. If they get power and cell service back up, we will know more. A work friend here in Ohio lost power all weekend so he didn't see the news of Asheville. Then his sister called him on Sunday and he had no idea what had happened until she called. So its on the news, but those who are in other areas damaged by Helene don't know.

This is peer-reviewed science. Fossil fuel companies were not only informed that climate change was real and measurable in 1954-they were the ones who funded the research to prove it. And then they buried the findings - of course, because money trumps everything, at the expense of people's lives and homes.

If you want to make it political the GOP threaten to shut down the country days before landfall. And even with the continuing resolution that passed there is no disaster funding included in it. FEMA is set up there however… the roads are wiped out and/or covered in debris. Now I haven’t seen a level of destruction as this storm brought but I did see what Sandy did to mountainous areas and it takes time to clear up debris and make it so rescue crews can get in there.

    Another contributor is that most gulf hurricanes do not track from the FL bend straight up to NC. Usually they landfall at the panhandle or west and cut a little west before dumping that rain on LA, MS, AL. All of which are both flatter and better accustomed to to that quantity of downpour in hurricane season. NC mountains are amazing for those who haven’t visited. But being up there in Highlands during a particularly wet season? I 100% saw how this could happen. It’s also a generally low income area unless you are living up on the peaks in the tourist towns. Or at the Biltmore I suppose :)
