Depression isn’t about sadness, it’s about numbness and mental paralysis. It’s about looking around you and the list of things you see around you that needs done and your brain shutting down the computer. Your explanations and utter empathy is such an aggressive breath of fresh air, spin-kicked straight to the lungs.

Your first sentence is depression in a nutshell. I've never heard it put that way, but as someone who has spent most of her life in that state, I can say that you hit the nail on the head!

People can change. Maybe 1 in a million. You never know when a wake up call comes or what will sink into another’s brain. Shaming is a thing people do because others do it. Like bullies. Some do mature. Some don’t. Mack can be himself and explain what he wants to; he never knows who he reaches. Telling Mack what to do or not do is “advice” but also can be shaming. I am very tired of people offering unsolicited advice. Just listen. Ask.

Let me give my 2 cents. I am/was a teacher. A student who threatened me daily finally brought a gun to school.
The ptsd from that, and other life traumas finally brought me to my knees.
      It’s 3 years later.
After much therapy and a lot of hard work, I’m just now starting to get back to normal.
I have a beautiful little house and hubby helped me keep it tidy but the seasonal deep cleaning that I have always done along with any needed changes (painting , wall touch ups, decorating, carpet cleaning, baseboards, etc) were not touched.
So, I stand with you: people who have never had any mental health issues and want to sling trash at others can, as you say, SUCK IT!
      ❤️❤️❤️

"You can't transplant your past onto another person's present." Everything you say about depression, ADHD, poverty, etc. is spot on and so compassionate and worded so clearly and succinctly. Your words are as important as the cleaning you do! The stigma and blame are so entrenched, and do NOT match the FACT of what people are dealing with. Thanks for all you do, including educating people about compassion.

exactly what I was thinking. he's spot on.
was watching a financial channel and there was a guy on the channel who was getting a financial audit who was a text book case of more severe ADHD. The amount of comments calling him lazy, unwilling to listen, undisciplined ... you name it he was called it. The auditor mentioned a lot of NT things the ADHD person could try and he just sat there saying "I tried that, didn't work. And I tried that, didn't work as well". Ppl think ADHD people are lazy because of these kinds of comments without realizing that they literally did try all these things and they didn't work for them.
its just disgusting the lack of empathy in this world.

It's 100% true. I've had Major Depressive Disorder for 30 years, and I'm a cheerful person by nature.
Not that the depression never makes me sad, but I'm "upbeat" often enough that when people find out I have it and/or hear about the battles I have just managing day-to-day life, they're floored.
I usually then explain to them that I'm cheerful by nature, always have been, and unless I'm in the throes of a severe depressive episode, my nature remains the same.

Working on this house reminds me of when our son with 4 small kids went thru a terrible divorce. His 100 yr. old 3500 sq ft barn of a house was destroyed. Dad and I spent our grocery $$ going to flea markets, garage sales, last day estate sales to furnish 5 bedrooms, a completely set up kitchen, painted, cleaned ourselves to death and bought groceries and litterly spent every penny we had til the next SS check came in. And the 5 of them spent months living in our basement , 6-8 months. You do what you have to do, don't judge, complain, just mind your own business and PRAY! I suffer from depression and probably a fair chunk of ptsd from childhood trauma and i can absolutely understand the cycle of depression and how it affects every single aspect of your life. my house used to feel like an insurmountable summit until i had my first child and somehow it changed how my brain was wired and now it just doesnt feel like the impossible task as it used to. dont ask me how that works.
having someone come in and tackle those impossible tasks can be a lifechanger, I can understand just how freeing what you do for these people is even if it may feel like their soul is getting torn out as you throw the dangerous pieces of their hoard away, in some part of their brain it must feel like a weight has been lifted.

4:30 - 8:10 best lecture for those who need it. I would put some of those statements on a t-shirt. It reminds me of another problem and I experienced it firsthand. When people help you and then can't just leave you alone. They can't help and go. They expect, demand, and/or feel entitled to either you be in their lives to the extent that makes you uncomfortable or them in your lives to the extent that makes them intruders. I can't accept help from certain people in my family without them reminding me of it or forcing themselves into my adult (and also autistic) life. What you do, you come to people who need help, you help, and then you give them that mental and physical private space they need, and you go to the next home to help. That's gold. I guess it's called unconditional help.

One of the biggest thing that can happen in Depression that I think doesn't get talked about a lot, is dissociation and the loss of time. When I had really severe Major Depression, I could come home, and sit down to take my shoes off, and then literally blink and 4 and a half hours had gone by. And I mean, literally blink, as if I had just skipped forward in time and lost that time entirely. That entire time, I had just been sitting and staring into space. Sometimes I didn't even finish getting my shoes off. It's like my brain literally left my body for huge chunks of time. So yeah... I literally didn't have time to clean in spite of being under-employed at the time, because I was losing hours at a time to Depression.

Depression and poverty can be all-encompassing and affect so many facets of peoples’ lives. The old saying, “Money can’t buy happiness”seems to often times be quoted by people who have no issues with a lack of money! Money can buy clothes and food, functional vehicles, school supplies, gas, pay taxes, maintain their properties…a never-ending list that rich people take for granted. What you are doing and how you are doing it is just phenomenal. Sending healing thoughts for your wife and so grateful Filth is willing to jump in, learn, and do such a great job! This is one of my very favorite channels!!!

I did raise 8 boys and I did have a spotless house, for the most part. On the flip side, I am now in a house with just my husband and my house is a wreck. Depression and anxiety suck and it hits everyone differently. Not only are there some things I can't do since I got hurt, but the actual motivation isn't there. I just don't feel like doing much other than go back to bed. People need to stop judging, or at least try not to judge.

I made the mistake once of asking people online to make suggestions on how to arrange my existing living room furniture to look more living-roomy. I don't recommend doing that. Not only did they not give me any advice at all about how to physically arrange my current furniture, they collectively honed in on the fact that I had oak paneled wainscoting all around the room. I got literally hundreds of messages telling me to get rid of it or paint it white. I nearly cried because we had just bought the house (a double wide), and I'd specifically picked the wallpaper color and wainscoting because I liked the look. I grew up in a 1970s trailer with dark wood paneling, and while I wouldn't want that in my house anymore, I just feel a little nostalgic about it. So yeah, don't go to the Internet for advice. 😂

Something I do to help find a furniture arrangement I like is to use grid paper to map out my space, and also little cut outs of my furniture (coloring them helps, too), and I use that to try layouts before I actually move my furniture. It also helps me better visualize living in the space.

I have been watching you for a while now and I wanted to share something. I am a stay at home mother of 3. My husband works for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery Maine. He works anywhere from 40 to 80 hours a week. I was raised by a mother that had us cleaning from a young age. I kept my homes spotless until 2016 when my brother died. I lost him and a year later have birth to my 3rd daughter who was very sick. A year later gave birth to our son. I lost myself and everything started to get more cluttered and every Christmas made more toys we had in the home. I just spent a month in our local BHU's. I was released too early and ended up back after an hour and a half. I am better now but the house is making me depressed. I am so glad I watched this video when I did. You explain things so nicely and are to the point. We are not lazy and we don't want to live like this. My kids are great kids because that is where I put what energy I had. I wish I had help to clean out home but I am at least able to watch your videos and they give me hope. I can do this one day at a time. Thank you for being here helping the people you do. Much Love ❤

One of my favorite RUclips channels in the U.K. Is “Flawless Cleaning Services”. Ben and his dad Paul do landscaping and pressure washing for free on Fridays. When he removed all of the overgrown ivy, trees, bushes, etc. for an older gentleman named Norman, he discovered that the windows were rotted and the walls were crumbling. He was able to arrange for some other contractors to do their thing on the house and of course highlight their business names on their trucks. ( there was also a “Go fund me” account for the materials). Do you think that you could ever do this if it was a house in your area, maybe spread some of the work load) That was his largest project to my knowledge,he usually does a one or two part “blessing” job. Just an idea.

Thank you for all you and your family do. We know so many people that need that extra help and then some in various situations. Their tax payer dollars go to programs that they do not qualify for that others can get but they must pick up a third job to just make ends meet for those extra repairs like plumbing, tires, used refrigerators ect. Wish there was a channel for those who need a roof or roof patch, a roof will keep your home safe to live in even if the rest goes other than the foundation. Bless you and others that help people. It makes a difference what ever anyone can help with these days. Just fixing these holes in walls and knowing how to put weather striping around the doors and fixing toilet flappers are a huge help let alone improving their lives to paint.

Words cannot describe how much I enjoy watching this channel. Sarcastic wit and dad jokes aside, your channel keeps it real about how generations of poverty, mental illness, and un/misdiagnosed neurodivergence can negatively affect one's home and well being. That's something you don't generally see on "Hoarders". Having spent almost half my life exposed to such things, I can relate to this channel a lot more than I can other cleaning channels/shows.

My eyes are tearing up listening to you talk in such a kind, empathetic and respectful way about the people you've been helping. I grew up in a chaotic household that was always a mess (and in some form of disrepair- which got worse over the years) and even though I was a child, I recognized the difference between what I thought was a normal household and mine. I was already ashamed as a very small child and it led to me feeling worthless- because I always felt like I was being judged and I believed that I deserved to be. My adult life is very different, but that feeling will always kind of be there...If my fence is sagging or a neighbor comes to tell me that a shingle fell off my roof- I'm instantly so ashamed. I keep my house tidy always, but if you show up and I have a piece of mail and cups on my coffee table- I'm instantly embarrassed (Which sounds silly to anyone else) I hate having people over because I have to have every inch of my home immaculate to do so, and if I see anything that's not perfect, I can't relax and will obsess over the drips down the side of my stove or cutlery drawer that had crumbs in it somehow.1 Inside, I'm still that kid with a house with fist sized holes in the walls, a filthy kitchen, and laundry piled to the ceiling in the basement. I never see mess in other peoples homes either. Even though their homes are normal, lived in spaces.
Anyways, I just want to thank you. I think what you do is so amazing & kind and you have the best way of talking about things. You're hilarious- but you're also really smart and well spoken. Wishing you and your family all good things for 2024- especially good health & happiness. ✌

I know what you mean about shaming the paint roller. My father used to do the same sort of thing. Every year, he'd cuss out the Christmas tree when he had to set it up in it's stand. That used to crack me up, but he didn't see the humor. 😊 🎄 Anyway, I hope Mrs. Itty Bitty Fluffalo is feeling much better. 🙂

Your explanation of the depression cycle is so helpful and so empathetic. You did such an amazing job for this family.

The 5 domains of social determinants of health: Economic Stability, Education Access and Quality, Health Care Access and Quality, Neighborhood and Built Environment, and Social and Community Context can be helpful in understanding yourself and others. Mac & family demonstrate an innate understanding of these concepts, high emotional intelligence and empathy. This is what the world needs more of, in how we treat ourselves, our partners and kids, our neighbours and everyone.

Severe depression is like being in the pit of hell and your mind keeps digging deeper. Anyone who throws you a lifeline to help is gladly accepted. For those who have never experienced it, I say count your blessings. No one goes there by choice.

Your first sentence is exactly how I felt two years ago. Now with meds and therapy, I feel I can live (but not like I did before the pit) but still feel like I'm just circling that black pit. I love when you said no one goes there by choice...how accurate that is. Thank you for sharing.

Welcome back! I was just wondering today how Emily was doing since surgery.
Sorry you've been dealing with rude and disrespectful people. There are people who are just incapable of empathy and incapable of imagining another's situation. I grew up in a dirty home where I was never taught to clean, where nobody cleaned. As an adult I had to learn how to clean properly.
This was a very satisfying finale to this house. I love seeing the before and after transformation.

The people who reached out to you for help are in my opinion so powerful. They open their houses for you and Jason and allow you to recording the state their houses are in. That is very brave and is a huge step in taking care for yourself and your house. It has my utmost respect. Judging these so vulnerable people who struggle the most in their daily life is disgusting. I am glad that you block those type of people of your channel. Caring, kindness and empathie goes a long way. Irma from the Netherlands

I think what you are doing in these videos is great and very kind. People like this you are helping are often forgotten about and left alone to muddle through.

Your painting skills are far above average. When you painted that room at your house with color waves on the walls, I was mesmerized ❤
