The movie is based on Homer's "The Odyssey" set in the depression era. Unbelievable soundtrack. Its really amazing how they change Homer's characters into depression era hillbillies. Its a true classic.
Amazing film. I read The Odyssey in school.
Somebody needs to tell the joke about the guy who sang this song (it wasn't Clooney). I don't remember it good enough.
The filmmakers said it wasn't the Odyssey, claimed ignorance of the classic Greek epic, and said it was merely a coincidence. If you watch the movie you realize this is obviously not true.
@@jaythompson5102 they literally have a cyclops in the movie.
@@scambammer6102 Basically, He (Dan Tyminski) told his wife that when she sees the movie that she would see Clooney singing, but would hear Tyminski's voice, and she replied "Dan, that is my fantasy" LOL great band, Union Station....
O’ Brother Where Art Thou is a must see movie. Still think Clooney was oscar worthy in the role.
meh.
I agree 💯
Probably Clooney's best role, and I dislike him immensely.
John Goodman certainly was.
His best I think
Great song from a great movie. In the movie, George Clooney appears to be singing lead… the actual singer is Dan Tyminski, of Alison Krauss’ band Union Station. He’s also playing guitar. Other Union Station band members also play other instruments, including dobro master Jerry Douglas, and Stuart Duncan on fiddle (he also did all that fine fiddling on the Amy Holland song “Hate Love A Little”). The whole movie soundtrack is great… it won a Grammy award for best album of the year in 2002.
Dan Tyminski is a true talent in playing and singing this song.
Soggy bottom boys were just the name of the band in the movie, this is actually performed by Allison Krause's band
Are you sure I am pretty sure but could be wrong but might have been neither one done it first. I'll see
Yep I was right blue grass great Ralh Stanley done it years ago
Good work. I wasn't referring to them as being the first to sing this though, just referring to the movie but thanks for the info!
@@quintondees4501 lead singer on this version is Dan Tyminski, a guitarist and vocalist in Union Station, who are, as you said, Alison Krauss' band.
@@RLKmedic0315 thanks, I couldn't remember his name or the band's name!!👍👍👍
There's a lot of Depression-era music in the movie. And the Depression was, as they say, depressing. I'm 72, and my Mom and Dad were tuned in to the music from back then, so I heard it some, too. Not always the happiest, but really well done. And done with not much but vocals and back-up vocals with maybe a guitar and fiddle accompanying. Simple. Un-refined. It's a mood, but just imagine what those people were going through in the '30's and '40's. Right up to World War II. Not that the War was good, but it basically ended The Depression. There were jobs again. Thanks for reacting to this one!
Omg yes!!! This song is so great.
And the freaking movie is even better!! Coen Brothers rule. (Dark comedy) And I can't help but see George Clooney singing this while this has been playing. 😄❤ Kudos to whoever is responsible for y'all hearing this. 👏
Clooney didn't sing it.. It was one of te band members in Alison Krause Band
@@scotthartman8993 that's why she said see him. As in when he's acting it out.
You two should definitely add "O,' Brother, Where Art Thou" to your movie list! It's bonafide! 😀 There is a LOT of great music in it. Oh, it is a comedy. No crying in this one, and Asia you won't need your blanket. 😉 Really funny stuff! It's one of my favorite movies. A keeper!
The whole sound track to the movie Oh Brother where art thou is phenomenal the movie is great too
From the movie "O Brother Where Art Thou", done in the radio station studio. "Ya git ten dollars fer singin' into the can."
And our acomp…acompan…acompa…our gitar player Aloiscious.
@@danjohnson2986 Good add on.
This band is actually Union Station. They perform with Alison Krauss.
I saw this live when I saw the singer, Dan Tyminski, when he was playing his part in Alison Krauss's band Union Station. If you haven't heard her, you must. She has the voice of an angel and has been a pro singer and violinist since she was 14.
Might be time to watch o brother where art thou on your movie channel!!🤠
"Ain't this place a geographical oddity. Two damn weeks from everywhere!!"
@@jayjordan7104 Gold.
@@jayjordan7104 best quote ever!!
I almost did a spit take on that line in theaters. I’m a dapper Dan man!
I do believe that Dr, Ralph Stanley wrote and sang this in 1957.
Song from a terrific movie. I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed the movie and this song.
This song has a traditional history of over 100 years. Written by a KY half blind fiddler named Dick Burnett as the Farewell song, it’s had a lot of variations as a great folk song should. Ralph Stanley, who sang the song O Death mesmerizingly in the O Brother film, recorded the most well known version before this, and Dan Thminski sings it in the Stanley style. It’s so unusually paced! Not at all what we’re used to.
This song reminds me of my oldest son RIP one of the first movies he went to see on his first date O Brother Where Art Thou. He loved it so much made him laugh, that he had to take me on a mom and son date to see it. 😆 it was so memorable for me everytime I hear it.
Tim Blake Nelson , singing “ In The jailhouse now” from the same movie is superb 🇬🇧🎸😉
He was the only actor or director who actually read "The Odessey". He read it at Brown University.
Amazing song and an even better movie, such a creative movie the way they re-create homers the odyssey. And the acting by Clooney and John Turturro and I can’t remember who played the third main actor but they were all fantastic together. With a great cameo by John Goodman.
Tim Blake Nelson
@@robertoser297 That’s right it was escaping me at the time. He was awesome. “We thought you was a toad”
This song has been around sense 1913. This is a huge bluegrass song, but has been done by folk singer Bob Dylan in the 1960's.
O Brother Where Art Thou is a fantastic dark comedy by the Coen Brothers. Trippy af and hilarious. Based on Homer's The Iliad.
The Odessey
A great movie. Worth watching as it has a lot of historical background and many top notch musicians.
My wife and I saw this cool AF movie at the theater. I couldn't believe how much great music there was in it. My mouth kept dropping as each new song played. I was thinking "Another one?!?!". Bought the soundtrack the next day.
It won the Album of the Year Grammy.
Dan Tyminski of Union Station is who is actually singing but the movie made it seem like George Clooney was singing.
I know you'll love the movie. It's funny and deep and strange. The performances are great and the Coen Brothers' films are fantastic.
Asia and BJ, the recording Artists for this soundtrack is Allison Krauss’ Bluegrass Band, Union Station.
The way they get the name Soggy Bottom Boys made me laugh. 😂
Shout out to Dr Ralph Stanley one of the greatest bluegrass gospel musicians
that ever lived , he wrote it. RIP Ralph 🙏♥️
Pure Blue Grass often conflated with the Blues. The former, hard scrabble Whites mostly from Appalachia and the latter hard scrabble Blacks mostly from the Mississippi Delta. The very young Elvis hooked up with producer Sam Phillips of Sun Records and combined them with a back beat up tempo Gospel vibe to invent Rockabilly the first iteration of Rock and Roll.
Thank You! I'm dumbfounded that yours is the first of literally many score of comments here to mention that this music is Blues music. Chewing the fat with my elders over the years we've discussed at length the thought H. Williams & R. Johnson may have, just maybe, have written a majority of the era's classic songs and vocals together! :-D
This song was the biggest in the early 2000s. The soundtrack was awesome. Check it out.
BLUEGRASS music!! 56 years old and very eclectic in my music! My dad was frome Eastern KY, home of Bluegrass music!! I love this band and song❤ Thanks for reacting tobit!!😊
Would be a amazing movie for y'all to react to on your movie channel. O brother where at thou. You'll love it
Absolutely, great movie.
That would be one fantastic watch.
Throwing my vote in for this! Hilarious, quoteable movie with a fantastic cast and an amazing soundtrack!
This was one track of Bob Dylan's debut album. It was a traditional folk song from the 1920s. Bob's version should be a follow up
For some reason, the movie was hard for us to get into the first time through, but is now placed firmly in our top ten all time favorite movies. Highly recommended.
This is an awesome song, i am really a metalhead at heart but i have always this song.
Wife here..My Husband's Favorite song and movie!!.., WOW.., (He's Bonifide)!!!..You guys have truly Amazing memories!!!..The movie is based on "The Odyssey" Greek Epic Poetry...Turned Comedy..Ya'll would Love ir
Super fun movie and singing. Historical feel with the Hollywood factor added of course. Well worth the time to watch!
Definitely a must see movie.
Thank you for doing the original version! Everyone else has ONLY done the cover. This one deserves to be heard as well - and is kind of getting lost in the mix.
The original version is by the Stanley brothers
Yeah, 👍🏻 but that's how it is here in the Appalachian mountains! I didn't grow up here, but my dad and his family is from here in Eastern Tennessee, and my mom is and her side is from Eastern Kentucky, but some have moved away to different places! My adopted parents listened to blue Grass in Florida a lot where I grew up, along with the Hank Williams, Willy Nelson and so on, he was from Birmingham, she was from Gainesville! Anyway I left Boston a week ago to come here to the Farragut Tennessee area and love it! 🪶
Yes this is Dan Tyminski of Alison Kraus’ band Union Station. There’s a live video of Union Station performing this on YT. Alison also had songs on the ‘O Brother Where Art Thou’ soundtrack. The Soggy Bottom Boys were the fictitious group in the movie.
The group who was singing was the band of Allison Krause, I her band is called Graham Central station, very good it was a Blue Grass song by Ralph Stanley, old Blue Grass artest
One of my favorite songs. N jail yard blues basically, soul. The exact name can't think of that you're trying to think of but never watched the full movie, seen clips, n I've seen lots of movies, lots. But to me that song alone transcends the entire film, my brother felt same way n showed me the song back when was young
From "O Brother Where Art Thou". Clooney.
They can come play on my front porch anytime. ❤️
The 44th Grammy awards (2002) had a fantastic tribute to the music from O Brother Where Art Thou that featured Ralph Stanley, Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss, and The Soggy Bottom Boys. You should check it out : ruclips.net/video/EW3Ub8wWqGc/видео.html.
Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? ...is a hilarious movie. I hope you react to it on your movie reaction channel. We have this soundtrack on CD for the music as well.
Interestingly, though the Coens claim it is based on The Odyssey, they also admit that neither of them has read The Odyssey or watched any other adaptations. Their movie does contain many elements in common with the story (and the general plot of a man and his comrades on a long journey home). But it has its own story and characters and is brilliantly written, directed, shot, and edited.
Also, by the time of the movie's release radio stations across the country had become so consolidated under a few massive communications companies that radio formats had become quite rigidly constrained. As a result there were no major stations in most markets that could fit music from this soundtrack into their playlists. Though the album sold well and won several 2002 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, as well as several Country Music Association awards and International Bluegrass Music awards, it received very little airplay outside of college radio stations and other independent outlets. This soundtrack practically defines the moment when radio airplay became irrelevant to the success or failure of a song or an album.
Love it. Classic folk song.
AHHHH... should have watched the video... It really adds something to it.
The soundtrack for this movie is amazing. Great movie too.
Absolute banger of a song and movie. It's a must watch.
Great guitar playing. The soundtrack is great - used to have it on CD. All old time music.
Y'all definitely need to check out the movie. Soundtrack won so many well earned awards.
Watch the movie...you will love it. ALL the music in the movie is brilliant..
This song was 1st published in a song book by Mr. Burnette, the near blind fiddler, in 1913.
You should see Sawyer Fredrick's "The Voice" audition. He covered this song. He was 15 that day. He turned 16 during the season and then went on to win that season too. He's an amazing young man.
You should check it out!
Great tune great film
Soggy Bottom Boys was the name the characters in the movie gave themselves - the actors weren't actually singing in the movie, either. This version is much older, possibly Ralph Stanley, early 20's? The music style is a mix of country, folk and bluegrass, sometimes called "Appalachia" bluegrass. Emmylou Harris & Alison Krauss are contemporary artists who are known in the genre - you would love Krauss's cover of "Down To the River to Pray"!
OMG you need to SEE the performance to appreciate this!!
the video clip from the movie.. it adds so much to this song.. and there are two times in the movie.. both are available.. one the record and the other the Governor banquet.. a must watch.. OR.. Add it to your movie watching.. its a great show.. I find something new everytime I watch it..
Yes you do have to see that movie! It's sooo good!!
BJ you mentioned earlier that you love the movie, me too, great movie
I can tell that Blue Grass really strikes a cord with yall! Yall should try a Blue Grass festival and get the real feel.
It's definitely a little of all of those. Like people already noted, it's based on Homer's The Oddessy, freely adapted with a lot if artistic liberties. I wasn't sure it was something I'd like, but it's surprisingly entertaining! Perfect cast, great screenplays, great music & a tale of part adventure, part comedy & part satire.
It's a Cohen Brothers movie!
I challenge anyone to name a bad Cohen Brothers movie.
The perfect song for our time in our republic, Welcome to America, you can find it at (Our Stage, Raising Cane) I am The singer of all.
This song has been covered by a ton of artists in very different styles. Check out Peter, Paul and Mary's version for a totally different feel.
And bluegrass is exactly what you're listening to.
Yup. The Stanley Brothers
Dan Tyminsky tells a great story about doing the voiceover for this movie. When he told his wife she'd hear his voice coming out of George Clooney's body, she exclaimed, "That's my fantasy!"
That song was written by a man from Monticello KY in Wayne County where I live
Great movie!!Yall need to see the movie.Bluegrass music is some of the Bluest music yall will ever hear
Yep. Most def need to check out that flick.
The movie “oh brother where art thou” is a must see! A bit on the eccentric comedy much like a Monty Python movie. The song is just as good as the movie, I actually like the other version with full bluegrass instruments a bit better then this acoustic guitar version. You should definitely check that out!
Confucius say never sit down in a swamp, one will get a " Soggy Bottom"
The movie is indeed a period piece comedy. Don't be afraid of it, you will laugh!
The movie has historical aspects and humor mixed
I agree, Asia - you have to see that movie. I'm pretty sure you'd love it.
I'll be looking forward to it -
It is deep movie, but has so much comedy in it! I love this movie! No crying, it is hilarious! Must watch
Movie is hilarious! Music was awesome. Very well cast and played!
You guys need to check out the young bluegrass phenom Billy Strings. Do "Dust in a Baggie" live.
^^This... ^^right up here?^^ Gospel Truth! "Dust in a Baggie" is better than ¾ of whatever else we jam to or hear.
That's the song they sing, in the movie,, " Brother where art thou"
O' Brother is a wonderful film. I hope you guys get to watch it.
"Dumber than a bag of hammers" 😂😂 Great movie 🍿
The movie is both brilliant and funny. George Clooney is so awesome in it, as well as the rest of the cast.
I could be wrong but I would classify this as Early American Folk Music, like late 1800's/early 1900's before everyone could just walk to a store and buy their music on a record. If you wanted to hear it, you had to go see the performance! It's mind boggling to think about how every culture around the planet has their own treasure trove of early folk music!
Omg!! It's so funny especially George Clooney 😂 it's so good
The band is Union Station
Great reaction Asian and Bj I personally think that is the best version I thoroughly enjoy the bluegrass style in that song as you said Bj ...
Please react to

Take your pic you can't go wrong
Check out Home Free’s cover “Man of Constant Sorrow” which is ACapella … strictly vocal.
Just checked and they did this 6 months ago!
Yes, yes. See the movie and listen to more bluegrass. Since you like this song, try Allison Krause with Union Station. Terrific.
Old bluegrass music is very dark. Even though the tempo is sometimes faster or upbeat. Enjoy your channel guys. Thumbs up as always. 👍
Thanks for listening
Welcome to the wonderful world of Blue Grass music!
It never gets old! 💯😎
The movie is comedy political satire and tragedy at the same time definitely worth a watch.
First time I heard this song was a cover by Home free as well listening to this brings home to me how good Home free are . Taking nothing away from these guys great number
Hayseed Dixie is probably the band you're thinking of. They cover all kinds of popular songs from AC/DC to Ice Cube. Entertaining stuff.
Frog leap studios has a rocked up version of this song thats amazing.
Yes, watch the movie, 'oh Brother where art thou.'
I think if you saw the film, "Oh, brother where art thou" you would enjoy this song more. Watch the whole movie. It's kind of a trip. And there are some older blue grass versions of this song which are really nice.
Look up BLACKBERRY SMOKE LIVE-CONSTANT SORROW,,,LANSING MI. they do this song like classic rock...love it
