    Thank you so much!!! I've been trying to learn vibrato for a long while. In every lesson on youtube, they used to say to breathe from your diaphragm, control your breath, free your voice and what not. I never could do that. It's only after seeing this video that I realized if I just practice vibrato in slow motion and build up speed gradually, the diaphragm will automatically start working the way it should and the freedom in voice will come automatically.

    Thank you for this! Almost every other video I've watched has been something along the lines of "if you're watching this, you want to learn vibrato, and that sucks for you because it's not something you can learn! Either you can do it, or you can't!" Thanks for giving me hope!

    Vibrato is just something that naturally happens when breath is supported and the throat is loose and unclenched.... Trust me, trying to force a certain sound is the opposite of what you want

    • @TotalSinging
      @TotalSinging 10 лет назад +13

      Not always. While it is true that vibrato happens naturally with a relaxed vocal mechanism, that tends to only happen after the pitch is sung for a period of time. Sing a "straight" note freely and without tension and it will start to oscillate; but if you want to control it, you must have an idea how to create it artificially.

    • @AishawithanEye
      @AishawithanEye 4 года назад +1

      @@TotalSinging Thanks for clearing that up. I keep seeing that I need to be "free" and "relax" but I just keep holding straight notes with no idea on how to make them waver, no matter how much I try to "relax." It's like the worst thing you can tell someone when they're anxious and the most ineffective thing to tell yourself--like an oxymoron--since the idea is to not do anything and "relax" is a verb.

    Thanks ! You are one of the few teachers who actually explains it correctly. Even the great Seth Riggs inexplicably blows it by either not dealing with the subject or incorrectly calling it a "whole-tone trill." Crazy ! Maybe in an extreme opera style . . .

    Vibrato is a NATURAL phenomenon which occurs when the voice is trained with the real open throat tecnique ( belcanto - italian method). It is caused by the free vibration of the chords, and it appears in relatively short time ( a few days to a few weeks). What you are teaching is an induced vibrato ( not too aesthetic, but accepted in the pop arena) which is caused by the throat muscles and the tongue.Good thing you did not show the vibrato done with the jaw or the shaking of the head, as some do...:)

    excellent video. vibrato comes in many different ways but through practicing vibrato it has helped me be more agile on quick changes between notes. just a comment to those saying vibrato "just happens" for those that want to learn this video and NY vocal coaching channel are the best resource I've seen on vibrato. don't listen to other folks or even instructors that say you "can't develop vibrato" singing is like a sport. you need to practice and train

    You're so brilliant. Your method of teaching is incredibly approachable. Thank you for making this available. I've tried to start singing or at least training to sing a couple of times and always abandoned it. But, it'sa burning desire and lately I've been very depressed which made me realize that I have to try again no matter how small an effort and I haven't many possibilities right now, so this is a real gift to find.

    Interesting!)
    Sophie says that vibrato is a bounce between the actual (main note) and the lower semi-tone...
    But if we slow down the speed of any professional singer's recording, we'll clearly hear wavering between main note and a higher semi-tone.
    Even here on RUclips, now we have an option in settings to slow down the speed and it is obvious that it's a higher semi-tone.

    Thank you for such a good video. I've been looking for a constructive "how to" video on vibrato on I finally found one. Most videos just "DO IT" or they simply just discuss vibrato, but I feel yours was very user friendly to beginners. Thank you so much. I'm going to practice now.

    Where does the vibrato occur, though? Is it created in the throat, in the diaphragm, or somewhere in between? Sometimes vibrato comes out unintentionally when I sing. When I actually try to do it I can't get it to come out. I've been paying attention to the mechanics of my body when vibrato does come out. I noticed that when my diaphragm is running out of air is usually when the vibrato comes out, but I don't really know how to recreate this. As Sophie explains, it's a mechanical function in the throat that she's intentionally causing...actually "singing" into vibrato. Can there really be two ways to create vibrato?

    • @AishawithanEye
      @AishawithanEye 4 года назад

      I second this question. I can follow along with this exercise using different parts of my singing instrument--different areas in my throat, my diaphragm, or my jaw--none of them sound effortless and "beautiful" the way I hear experienced singers do it--so which is the "right" one? When I try to trigger my vibrato, it's very fast, like a hummingbird, and only when I sing like a broadway performer will a more familiar-sounding, but shorter, vibrato appear. I've been practicing vibrato exercises for months and this is where I'm at. I think I need more information/instruction?

    • @jasonkeith9317
      @jasonkeith9317 Год назад

      I'd say there r actually more than two there r many ways to do vibrato. As well as many types and many definitions. Tricky subject very tricky.

    Sophie,
    Which should a student do more frequently, "na-na" or "we-we"?
    By the way, what you were describing in this video is actually Tremolo as opposed to Vibrato. Vibrato waivers pitch to a very minor degree but definitely not a full half step. I prefer singers who sing with straighter tones to ones who sing with a noticeably wide Vibrato (1/4 tone is a wide Vibrato) or Tremolo (1/4th to 1/2 tone) Any fluctuation of more than 1/2 tone is neither Vibrato or Tremolo, it's ridiculous!

    • @1108vocalstudio
      @1108vocalstudio  6 лет назад

      Your absolutely right! I just like to make the videos easy to understand so that beginners don't feel overloaded with information. To answer your question, it depends on what the singer needs. If they need a more edgy sound then "Na-na" will give them that. If they need to sing lighter and with more agility, then I would do "we-we".
