    1:20 This is why I love hearing stories about Lagertha and other shield maidens in Norse folklore, whether they were real or not. Nordic women are badass, and the fact that it was considered 'normal' throughout Viking history to fight alongside the men is fascinating. No, female warriors were still not very common back then, but every housewife was expected to take up arms to defend her home and family if need be.

      But you got to remember they were not her pets she put them there as an obstacle. Probably thinking if he can slay a bear and a hound he can have her. I'm sure if she was close to these animals she wouldn't want to be with him or put them out there to possibly die at the hands of him. It was a test of strength and skill because she would not be with a lesser man being the shield maiden that she was.

    In fact, the grandest single Viking grave ever found belonged not to a man, but to two women-one about 75 years of age, the other around 50-who were buried in a funerary longship on the Oseberg farm near Tønsberg, Norway. Their burial was one of history's most exciting Viking-era discoveries. Could one of these women be the Shieldmaiden Lagertha.

      I find it interesting that the original Saxons, Jutes, and Angles were originally from areas that were in and around Denmark. So in essence the original saxons who went to Britain in the late 400s and 500s were actually proto Scandinavians. So later in the Viking age the Saxons vs Vikings were actually somewhat removed cousins fighting each other. Vikings initially had the upper hand because the proto Scandinavian Saxons, Jutes, and Angles became less warlike because the land of Britain was fertile and life was better there and they became more sedentary and civilized and there was plenty enough to go around that they didn’t have to raid each other. It is quite interesting when you look at Norway and Denmark today. They are arguably one of the most humane, happy, and civilized people on earth today. They have the best run governments, the highest quality of life, and the least inequality as well as the best standard of living anywhere on earth. They also have the least corrupt governments. And to think back in the 800s they were the most savage and uncivilized people in Europe. Proof that harsh living conditions make a harsh people which I guess explains the Russians today.

    To interpret the term " sheildmaden" amongst the Celts is " targer". The targer women would protect the villages when the young warriors were away. Women were also in Celtic legend the trainers of the young warriors in guerilla warfare in the most hazardous conditions in the mountains on the Isle of Skye Scotland, as legend tells in the story of the great Warrior Cuhullin in Irish folklore

      Yes, great history indeed. However, I'm pretty sure Valhalla was only open to men who died in battle. No one else could get in - not women, not kids, not men who died by causes other than war. It's one of the reasons Christianity took hold so quickly. Christian afterlife was open to everyone. And poor people had a better chance of getting into heaven than the wealthy warriors who stole loot. Just sharing...!

    • @stanleyarmstrong2898
      @stanleyarmstrong2898 Год назад +1

      Somm Wine, women who died in childbirth were in Valhalla. The Sheldmaidens may have been given status as Valkyries, the guides into Valhalla to the fallen men in battles. They were there as a graceful component of the court of Odin the All Father. They gave mead to the fallen. As for carls and peasants, they were honored as warriors, also. Others, who died off of the battlefield, and were pure, were at a golden hall called Gimli. Those evil others were in Niflheim, the realm of the dark goddess Hel.

    • @druidriley3163
      @druidriley3163 Год назад +1

      @@sommwine *Christian afterlife was open to everyone* Norse afterlife was as well. Valhalla though, was a training camp. Odin was gathering brave warriors to help him fight in Ragnarok. That's what Valhalla was for. I believe Freya also had her own afterlife Folksvangr, a lovely field or meadow where other folks not chosen for Valhalla went but who died noble deaths. Freyja receives the slain heroes of the battlefield quite respectfully as Óðinn does. Her house is called Sessrumnir. Everyone else went to Hel's kingdom.

    There isn't one video of yours that hasn't totally fascinated me. This one included.
    It's funny because I've never had any interest at all in Scandinavia, though I've been there twice, until Netflix came out with these shows and out of boredom I thought I'd try just one episode of one show. Haha! I was hooked, so learning about the historical characters is great!
    On a TOTALLY separate note, I have to tell you about the experience I've just had with the Gutenberg link you've provided. Granted, I'm in Italy so one never knows whether that's the problem in itself. On Google, Duck Duck Go, and Samsung Beta, not only did the link not work, either clicked or written out very carefully by me, but on one attempt I actually got a weird notice from the Guardia di Finanza (Federal financial cops, like the IRS in the United States) that had the correctly written internet address and then said that the site had been taken offline for technological fraud and something else that I can't remember. Since I believe that that's total baloney, but I can't get access even by writing the address myself, I wanted to let you know about this. I became determined to gain access because it wasn't granted, so that's the reason why I kept trying so many times. If you do see my comment, is there any way you could leave me the link again, as a reply, so I can try again? Or do you know of another site that might have this information or type of information?
    I'm very sorry for the long comment and would've obviously preferred to leave a comment on the great video alone, but since I had that experience on three separate browsers (on my phone), I figured I should let you know what happened. It's probably just the typical Italian mess!!
    Thanks again for the wonderful video!! I love each one you post!! 🙂

      The book is called THE DANISH HISTORY, BOOKS I-IX by Saxo Grammaticus so maybe type that in to google and try to find another link?

      The "historians" that doubt she existed are the same ones that use the same source where Ragnar appears to argue it's proof of HIS existence, then argue HER existence is just myth though she is in the same source 🤦🏼‍♀️. Their entire denial is based on "how can women have been warriors, that's just unlikely, probably just added in the stories as 'men's fantasy". So all the men are real, and all the women in the SAME chronicle are myth. That is how stupid their argument is. They deny their existence based on their prejudice, not any evidence, cause all the evidence points to their existence (shield maidens and warrior women appear in all the sagas and religious stories, and archeological findings of women warrior graves, including the biggest 'king boat burial' ever found was of a woman). 🤷🏻‍♀️

    her being a woman the sources would never say much about her since they concentrated on the men. If you visit St Paul Cathedral in London for instance you can see that Elisabeth I tomb is in a small corner of the church almost out of sight while the kings tombs are central and in evidence and she was one of the greatest monarchs England has ever had and that was many centuries after the so called viking age.

    She's a myth. A very cool myth but most definitely not a real person. Most of ragnar is myth mixed with a couple of different rangnars from both history and myth. I think its very important that videos like this explain this and not lead people to believe they are true historical characters.
    Maybe 20% of the Vikings tv series is historical truth st most. The other 80% is pure fantasy.
    All really cool fun but not real. Even from reading the comments here, people believe these people to be real life people from history.

    • @sloth_e
      @sloth_e Год назад +4

      @Christine Hunt odd. I've replied to this but it's disappeared.
      Saxo Grammaticus's records of old oral stories and myth is the only real source. She's a mention in his mythos of Ragnar lothbrok.
      Sagas etc, whilst they contain "some" historical information are mostly fantasy filled with magic and dragons and impossible feats and so on. There's many scholarly writing's and interpretations on what is contained in these stories and it's best that people read on these than rely on RUclips videos as much as the comment sections. 👍

    The Gesta Danorum or as its also called Historia Danica isnt really a source that can be trusted word by word. Saxo Grammaticus writes about times and people more than ages ago and mixed it with myths and belives of the time. Lagertha is as real as Odysseus, amazons valkyries or unicorns.

    Lagertha was only ever a mythological saga! There’s no proof she was real! This is her only story out of all the sagas lol and she never knew Ragnar their sagas are 100’s of years apart! And Ragnar has 6 different sagas all with with different wives and children so none of those are considered true either! Because theirs 100’s of Ragnars throughout the years!
    Edit: it’s been proven many times shield maiden where not common! Viking didn’t like women in battle for many reasons… women would only go along to help the injured or for morale!

    This can be found among many northern peoples such as Picts, Celts, Germanic. The role of women was diametrically opposed to that of women from Oriental cultures.
    Our women didn't know the concept of emancipation, they just were.💪 ... and nowadays these cultures are called backward. Find the error.🙄 We should take a closer look at out old cultures. They lived in harmony with nature.

    I need to read this source. The "Amazons" were Scythian women who were allowed to be warriors and could shoot a bow backward on horseback. The way the narrator calls them "barbarians" could be a clue that either Lagertha was of a Scythian lineage or else strongly resembled a Scythian.

      Allowed to be warriors? More like chose to be, and no one dared question it. Ancient societies were much more matriarchal that an our current culture, unfortunately we lost that over time

    There must have been countless warrior women their names lost to time as DNA evidence from the early Viking period attests. There were many cultures in which women warriors were prevalent. It was thought Greek tales of the Amazons were legends however recently several graves of Scythian women warriors have been uncovered. Indeed, in 1988 a 2,600 year old Scythian burial with battle axe, bow and arrows was found in Tuva and assumed to be that of a man but recently DNA evidence revealed she was a 13 year old girl, which chimes with Greek accounts Scythian girls began training in hunting and warfare at that age. In the 1960s two graves were unearthed in a Roman cemetery in Cumbria, England, and assumed to be of men until recent DNA tests showed both were female, as the Romans didn’t employ women soldiers it’s thought they were from an auxiliary attachment raised among the barbarians. In 1542 the conquistador Francisco de Orelana mounted a military exploration of a river in Brazil. His force fought many battles with women warriors causing him to write it was a river of Amazons, and the name stuck. It’s recorded that Native American women warriors fought at the Battle of the Little Big Horn destroying general Custer’s 7th cavalry , we have the name of one, pretty nose, an acclaimed warrior, elsewhere in the battle women fought and destroyed a section of Custer’s army, it’s been suggested they were motivated by revenge for the Wounded Knee massacre of Native American women and children. Even the Mongols had revered women warriors who could defeat men in wrestling contests. Women warriors in history are actually commonplace depending on the society, it only seems unusual today looking back with modern ideas
