Oh, that is so special. Please say hi to him from me and my fam from tiny nation, PNG. We love his character (which he acted well) and the series in general. 🥰
It is beyond sickening that an upstart like the opportunistic Godwin's son, Harold "the last Anglo Saxon king" will come around to remove King Edmund's grandson from the legitimate throne of the House of Wessex. It came good to Godwinson his comeuppance in Senlac hill, for usurpation.... however at the price to lose all England for the Saxons to the French Normans
I read the books, some more than once. They are fabulous. Bernard Cornwell is probably my favorite author. The Sharpe’s Rifles series is also fabulous, and Sean Bean made a wonderful Richard Sharpe on tv. Thank you for the history here, tho it’s quite the spoiler to hear of Uhtred’s assassination.

Wonderful true historical piece. Love this stuff. Love the Last Kingdom show. It's obviously not even 50% historically accurate but some of the themes of characters even whole families and people being stuck between Saxon and Dane at the time and the stress of uniting England and the Church are true historical themes and the story does justice to that I think.
awesome Vid Ollie loved the tv series and even I looked into the real Uhtred of Bebbanburg an interesting man by all accounts I like your profiles on these legendary Saxon and Viking Heroes looking forward to the next one as always plus the tv series is kickass

The information I have about the family was the same that was given to BC about the Oughtred family by John Hayes Jenkinson from Canada in the 1960's .
The Last Kingdom is an anomaly in TV history. I've never been so invested in the characters of anything else. It is really something special. "Destiny is all"
@lisawest6533 If you're an ancestor means Uhtred is a descendant (born through one of your children). Considering how long ago Uhtred lived, you HAVE to have possibly been born to one of HIS descendants.
Bernard Cornwell is one of my favorite authors and I have read the Uhtred series of novels. Knowing that he is a descendant o the great man makes me want to read them all again from that perspective.
Cornwell's Uhtred is Fictional, as is most of the saga. As Cornwell was adopted, they must have done some real detective work to find his link to the Historical Uhtred.
Great video. Point of fact, the word viking is actually a verb rather than a noun. It refers to the practice of seaborne raiding into 'enemy lands to steal silver, cattle or whatever else they could lay their hands on, killing any who put up any resistance. To go viking was to jump in a ship, head for foreign shores and loot, burn, rape and pillage, then sail home with the spoils. The people doing the viking were referred to as Danes, Norse, Svear and even Rus, although they all ultimately originated from Scandinavia. The Normans, noteable for one of their leaders 'William' who became known as the Conqueror, who invaded Saxon England in 1066, were also from Scandinavia, hence the denomination 'Norman' from 'Norse Men'. Very much enjoyed this video.
@@christophersayrs907 I’m only quoting back Bernard Cornwell when I say this. I don’t profess to having any deep insight into ‘Old Norse’. Not quite sure what you mean by ‘it referred to the actual undertaking and not the undertaking itself’. Could you explain further. If you have a deeper understanding of this then I’m perfectly prepared to accept your point of view. Bernard Cornwell had obviously done a great deal of research when he put this into the forward of the first book in the series ‘The Last Kingdom’. Could you provide your credentials? I’m very interested to know. I was always convinced that Vikings referred to the collective peoples who invaded England (and many other parts of Europe and further afield) during the 9th century and onwards. It was only reading BCs forward that convinced me otherwise.
@@christophersayrs907 and people do actually say ‘I tripped’ in more than one context 😂. Especially if they’ve been dabbling if you get my meaning😜. Just adding a little humour.
@@christophersayrs907 But it is not a people? You seem to be getting very muddled., Whether it is a noun or a verb is not the issue here, the issue is whether it was actually applied to a specific group of people. Evidence would suggest that it was not. We had 'Pirates' but they could have been from anywhere. In fact Vikings and Pirates are very similar, in that they attacked from the sea, raped, pillaged, took slaves and went! No one has every suggested that Pirate was a race? So why is Viking?
@@hogwashmcturnip8930 I disagree that the issue is "whether it was actually applied to a specific group of people," and thank you terribly much for foisting the muddiness upon me, while it appears that you, dear sir, are the one getting very muddled. "Viking" is a noun, and if you'd read above, it did apply to a very specific group: "a group of people related to Vik (perhaps Erik, but this reference is, alas, lost). It ALSO applies to a raid by those related to Vik, and even a ship owned/used by a group of people related to Vik. "Pirates," take anyone as you said, so your analogy is poor, indeed. Did you read above? Wuffing means those related to Wuffa and Viking means those related to Vik. C'mon now. Read.
I normally never watched these kinds of genre, but I tried the Vikings show and liked that so I tried the last kingdom and fell in love. Now I’m a big fan of these genres :D Edit: ok guys, recommend me a show like Vikings/last kingdom. Thanks ;)
Vikings Valhala [series - Amazing!] Set more than 100 years after the events of Vikings, the Netflix series has followed the increased tensions between the Vikings and the native English, as well as the warring factions of the traditional pagan Vikings and those with Christian beliefs. Focusing on the adventures of famous Vikings Leif Eriksson, Freydis Eriksdottir and Harald Sigurdsson, the first season began with the St Brice's Day Massacre in 1002, and the show has the potential to continue on until 1066, considered the end of the Viking age by many historians.
@@Dilly_Dil1y I see. Personally, I most liked the Vikings Valhalla 2nd season, because of the dramatically escalated action, plus its historical knowledge. Also, the battle scenes were grate. Now waiting for the Season 3...
They're all fiction. As is A Song of Ice and Fire, which The Game of Thrones is based on. That book series is inspired by my Plantagenet, Merovingian and Capetian ancestors. This includes the Red Wedding (I have two) and the Wall, inspired by Hadrian's Wall.
I had previously read that there were two or three Uhtreds (the first, second, etc.), and indeed, the great warrior did come later, as pointed out here. I assume that Uhtred (in 'The Last Kingdom') represents them all, as well as any great general/warrior/strategist who would have been a vital part of any of the various kings' armies, and of whom would have been greatly depended upon, though not necessarily documented in history. Anyway, 'The Last Kingdom' is a fantastic series which just gets better and better with each season!
Thank you. Uhtred is also one of my ancestors. I've been learning a lot of world history through my ancestors. They were a pretty interesting bunch of people. Lolololol
Uthred was a descendant of both the ealdermen of Bamburgh and a powerful thegn of Aethelstan from Mercia of the same name (Uthred being probably his grandson). Uthred is a Mercian name. In Alfred's time, the ealdermen of Bamburgh were crafty rulers who managed to deal with the Scots, the Welsh, and most importantly the Vikings keeping them at bay. They had a limited relationship with Alfred swearing an oath to him of friendship providing relics of Saint Cuthbert. I suspect that Alfred gave them in return silver and relics from southern saints. In 894, Aethelnoth led either an embassy or an army to York and may have met Osberth and Eardwulf of Bamburgh while in Northumbria. Cornwell created a composite character combining elements from the life of his ancestor and those of Aethelnoth, the Ealdorman of Somerset and a later abbot during Edward, Aethelstan, Edmund, and Eared's reigns, who lived past Edmund's time, living into his 90s. Aethelnoth's granddaughter maried Aethelweard the Chronicler after meeting the elderly survivor of Alfred's wars at the estate of Edington (Wiltshire) in 953 during one of King Eared's Witans and hearing Aethelnoth's stories. The meeting had a profound impact on Aethelweard, who arranged in his old age for one of his grandson to be named, Aethelnoth. Aethelnoth's deeds were important and his long life kept the memories of Alfred's wars alive for numerous generations of West Saxons and Mercians in the tenth centuries.
He has written books that made him a lot of Money! As long as you appreciate it is utter BS that is OK. It's a bit like Phillipa Gregory and Hilary Mantel. Make it up as you go along, and because your readers generally have No Clue about the period they will assume it is All True!
Please believe when I say, any one who claims a particular ancestor, is unless they have, Charters to land and DNA evidence are just guessing at their ancestry. Just because you may have a name that is close to or come from a certain area guarantees nothing. The recording of Birth, Deaths and Marriages , unless on personal papers is very hit and miss until the middle of the 17th Century, unless you have Irish Ancestry.

Wow, I always wondered how the exile came about with Æthelred the “Unready”. Lo and behold, Uhtred played a part in that. Incredibly interesting.
Great video. Bud... Cant wait for the the film of the last kingdom. 7. Kings must die. The headline alone it should tell us it will be really good..
7 Kings? Must be about the Battle of Brunanburgh.
The Last Kingdom was one of the best shows I have watched since Game of Thrones! So many moments brought tears to my eyes. Rooting for Uthred every the of the way! #DestinyIsAll 👏
And mostly historically true too, at least with regards to all of the events, times, places, and most of the characters.
Keep these coming please I just starting this show and I need the history on everyone. ❤️
I just finished the show last week, your in for a treat! I absolutely loved it.
Yes, same here. I just started season 2. I didn't realize how many seasons the show ran for. I got a lot to catch up on...
ABSOLUTELY adored The Last Kingdom and the star is gorgeous ❤️
I also loved this series and the books too. I wish more of Bernard Cornwell's books were TV series.
Love the series. At season 4 now. I was convinced by a friend to give it a chance because I loved vikings
Already finished I assume? I would rank this right after Vikings. Nothing else comes close to both
I've been friends with Alex for 16 years...it's so cool seeing him as the face of these types of videos!
I Love Alex. He is a wonderful actor, is fantastic as Uhtred and he seems to be a genuinely nice man.
He deserves all the attention he's no doubt getting now from the industry and fans.
Next time you see or speak with him please tell him Hello from me in Sydney, Australia. Cheers. 🍻

@Little Greek Coffee House, Alex is perfect as Utred! I cannot see anyone else cast as Utred! He is an amazing actor and I can't wait to see the movie Seven Kings Must Die!
Wait really? Do you think we could talk to him? He is my favorite character and actor, it would be a dream to talk with him.
Oh, that is so special. Please say hi to him from me and my fam from tiny nation, PNG. We love his character (which he acted well) and the series in general. 🥰
Amazing movie iv ever seen this is totally realistic at my age37... I love this series❤
Edmund ironside sounds like a cool character, respected by both sides and an amazing swordsman
He truly was! Check out my video on him!
Hello Maria, how are you doing today???
I adore Bernard Cornwell's novels, he is a magnificent writer! I have all the novels, the dvds of the Sharpe series and have my local video store guy finding me The Last Kingdom dvd series too. I will have to get him to go after the movie when it comes out.
@@laurag7295 You are a fan! I just finished the Witcher book series, and it’s very good. Beautifully written. The Poldark books are excellent.

Another excellent video from HP
Best series out there. I saw 7 kings must die forst and then the series. Now i see the whole story..everyone's reign and death took on a whole new meaning after all was done.
the series was amazing! I have other vidoes on all the characters from the last kingdom! Alfred, Aethelflaed, Edward, Aethelstan, Haesten you name it! Be sure to check them out!
im still waiting for the season 5. i cant wait to see more Uthred's adventures. the best series on netflix

Loved The Last Kingdom programme. Hope the real Uthread was as handsome as the one in the T.V. series!!
he doesn’t have to be..
I always thought uhtred was fictional character thank u, amazing video Ollie
Thank you for watching !!!
Fascinating history and excellently presented.
Really glad this came up in my feed. I enjoyed it and learned something!
Very interesting. I have read all of the books and have thoroughly enjoyed the series. Wish there were more episodes.
One of the best shows and movies ever
Wonderful true historical piece. Love this stuff. Love the Last Kingdom show. It's obviously not even 50% historically accurate but some of the themes of characters even whole families and people being stuck between Saxon and Dane at the time and the stress of uniting England and the Church are true historical themes and the story does justice to that I think.
Infelizmente a série deixou a desejar! A história vai além do que fou contada e o final, bem mesmo com o filme, Deus pra dar um final correto
awesome Vid Ollie loved the tv series and even I looked into the real Uhtred of Bebbanburg an interesting man by all accounts I like your profiles on these legendary Saxon and Viking Heroes looking forward to the next one as always plus the tv series is kickass
Thank you for watching jamie!!!
I really like it and repeated again watching after finishing the series.
I studied European History and found the series almost accurate. Thanks
want to watch Seven Kings Must Die. A continuation of some sort for the series
I was going to watch the series, but I wasn’t sure what it was I would be watching and who they were in history, so thank you for this. Some of the things you mentioned I recognized from the recent Vikings series, which I really enjoyed. Subbed! Cheers!

Uhtred is one of my great grandfathers as well :)
That is so cool!
It's amazing that you could trace your ancestry back that far. I'm REALLY impressed 👍.
Yeah how did you trace it back that far? I'd be interested to see how far back I could trace my own
Mine too !
The information I have about the family was the same that was given to BC about the Oughtred family by John Hayes Jenkinson from Canada in the 1960's .
The Last Kingdom is an anomaly in TV history. I've never been so invested in the characters of anything else. It is really something special. "Destiny is all"

I just found that I am a descendant of Uhtred th Bold, so exciting. This series makes it all feel very real. @rhonda, have a nice day.
So am I ! My grandmother was called Helen Oughtred and I'm a distant cousin of Bernard Cornwell . Pleased to meet you .
Ancestor? I think you meant descendant.
I spelled "the" wrong. Thank you, I misspoke.@@rhondajkestin
@lisawest6533 If you're an ancestor means Uhtred is a descendant (born through one of your children). Considering how long ago Uhtred lived, you HAVE to have possibly been born to one of HIS descendants.
Okay I understand. I misspoke. You can be right. Move on girl.@@rhondajkestin
Very interesting. It's cool to know that great shows about the Vikings are actually based on real people. Thanks for the info... 💯
I got into all of this because I found him in my family history as well
Great video.
@@christophersayrs907 I get you. Somebody better tell Bernard lol.
C'mon now. Read.
Uchtred "the Bold", Earl of Northumbria is my 31st great grandfather... Thank you for the informative video!
There have been a few videos based on this guys. Your video had been the best. Destiny is all!

I normally never watched these kinds of genre, but I tried the Vikings show and liked that so I tried the last kingdom and fell in love. Now I’m a big fan of these genres :D
Edit: ok guys, recommend me a show like Vikings/last kingdom. Thanks ;)
Rome from hbo. It's considered the first mega TV show that inspired GoT or Spartacus style epics
Vikings Valhala [series - Amazing!]
Set more than 100 years after the events of Vikings, the Netflix series has followed the increased tensions between the Vikings and the native English, as well as the warring factions of the traditional pagan Vikings and those with Christian beliefs.
@@jennydany watched it ;) liked the first season. Second season was meh .
@@Dilly_Dil1y I see. Personally, I most liked the Vikings Valhalla 2nd season, because of the dramatically escalated action, plus its historical knowledge. Also, the battle scenes were grate. Now waiting for the Season 3...
Nossa a melhor série que ja assistir, ja estou com saudades do Untrad
Nine minutes later and the timelines and plots of Vikings, Vikings: Valhalla and The Last Kingdom have been trashed. Well done!
I've watched a few of your videos so far, and have thoroughly enjoyed your work!

Hello Kathy 👋👋, how are you doing today???
I loved this show. I wish they could have more 😡
The last kingdom is my favorite show. So good.
Thanks for this video I enjoyed it. I believe LAST KINGDOM the series and the books sparked my interest in history and was brilliantly done.
Thank you. Uhtred is also one of my ancestors. I've been learning a lot of world history through my ancestors. They were a pretty interesting bunch of people. Lolololol
We’re all descended from Genghis Khan…
Bernard Cornwell has wrote some excellent books.
Great narration Ollie. Thank you so much. 🍎💃👌
He has written books that made him a lot of Money! As long as you appreciate it is utter BS that is OK. It's a bit like Phillipa Gregory and Hilary Mantel. Make it up as you go along, and because your readers generally have No Clue about the period they will assume it is All True!
So darn interesting I just love this history love the show “ The Last Kingdom “ it’s brilliant.
Trying to learn actual Viking history after watching tLK Vikings and Vikings: Valhalla is really hard I’ve found
That's really cool that the author of last kingdom was uthred lineage.
Wow! Imagine knowing your ancestry that far back in the past! Love the books and the TV show!
I see so many of your cousins here commenting. meet up guys. maybe in those Saxon/Viking attires. wd be good to know your cousins. and would be fun !!!
@@johnfisher697 I have seen people claiming to be the X grandchild of people who died childless. Even mythical characters! King Arthur? Total Fantasists, but it seems the Americans in particular have a need to claim 'Something'
I find it very odd, because I was always led to believe the first emigrants were the poor, the dispossessed , criminals and religious nutters! Now we find out they were All Royalty! Fancy that!
Let's face it no one had heard of Uhtred before the show! And it is horribly inaccurate, but now he is suddenly everybody 's Grandad! Hilarious!
@@hogwashmcturnip8930Good Morning Sir, yes it's amazing what ancestors people claim to have, also quite amazing are people putting "Destiny is all" not quite sure why but there you go.
I don't know if its in this video but someone claimed him as an ancestor and I gave him lots of reasons as to why that is a very hard claim to prove but of course he assured me he could, In the end I gave up trying,
I would hazard a guess and say the claimant's are American, and therein lies the problem for the most part.🤣
Cheers
@@johnfisher697 Greetings to you too! It is quite astonishing what people will allow themselves to believe. Then these same people Vote! Nuff said,

They never do. I have to sit through at least 2 episodes of the Last Snoredom at my friends house every Wednesday. For some reason they think I am interested. Sorry but I like my history accurate? The Magic sword is fun! He loses it or has it taken from him so many times, yet it is back for the next battle! And Cornwell has always been a BS*tter. It's what he makes his living from. It is OK as Fantasy, but No Way is it History. For a start Uhtred lived 100 years After Alfred! It's a fun show, as long as you accept that it is Bollocks!
