Vikings Valhala [series - Amazing!] Set more than 100 years after the events of Vikings, the Netflix series has followed the increased tensions between the Vikings and the native English, as well as the warring factions of the traditional pagan Vikings and those with Christian beliefs. Focusing on the adventures of famous Vikings Leif Eriksson, Freydis Eriksdottir and Harald Sigurdsson, the first season began with the St Brice's Day Massacre in 1002, and the show has the potential to continue on until 1066, considered the end of the Viking age by many historians.
@@Dilly_Dil1y I see. Personally, I most liked the Vikings Valhalla 2nd season, because of the dramatically escalated action, plus its historical knowledge. Also, the battle scenes were grate. Now waiting for the Season 3...
I had previously read that there were two or three Uhtreds (the first, second, etc.), and indeed, the great warrior did come later, as pointed out here. I assume that Uhtred (in 'The Last Kingdom') represents them all, as well as any great general/warrior/strategist who would have been a vital part of any of the various kings' armies, and of whom would have been greatly depended upon, though not necessarily documented in history. Anyway, 'The Last Kingdom' is a fantastic series which just gets better and better with each season!
I really like it and repeated again watching after finishing the series. I studied European History and found the series almost accurate. Thanks want to watch Seven Kings Must Die. A continuation of some sort for the series
The information I have about the family was the same that was given to BC about the Oughtred family by John Hayes Jenkinson from Canada in the 1960's .
Wonderful true historical piece. Love this stuff. Love the Last Kingdom show. It's obviously not even 50% historically accurate but some of the themes of characters even whole families and people being stuck between Saxon and Dane at the time and the stress of uniting England and the Church are true historical themes and the story does justice to that I think.
The books The Saxon Stories that were the inspiration for the show are among my absolute favorites. Cornwell's descriptive writing draws you in and the description of battle makes you feel like you're there.

As a northwest German from the old Saxon homeland Westphalia I felt very much connected with the Angles and Saxon history of England... Sadly the Norman's conquered England...we would have a totally other England when this never happened..
It is beyond sickening that an upstart like the opportunistic Godwin's son, Harold "the last Anglo Saxon king" will come around to remove King Edmund's grandson from the legitimate throne of the House of Wessex. It came good to Godwinson his comeuppance in Senlac hill, for usurpation.... however at the price to lose all England for the Saxons to the French Normans
Great video. Point of fact, the word viking is actually a verb rather than a noun. It refers to the practice of seaborne raiding into 'enemy lands to steal silver, cattle or whatever else they could lay their hands on, killing any who put up any resistance. To go viking was to jump in a ship, head for foreign shores and loot, burn, rape and pillage, then sail home with the spoils. The people doing the viking were referred to as Danes, Norse, Svear and even Rus, although they all ultimately originated from Scandinavia. The Normans, noteable for one of their leaders 'William' who became known as the Conqueror, who invaded Saxon England in 1066, were also from Scandinavia, hence the denomination 'Norman' from 'Norse Men'. Very much enjoyed this video.
@@christophersayrs907 I’m only quoting back Bernard Cornwell when I say this. I don’t profess to having any deep insight into ‘Old Norse’. Not quite sure what you mean by ‘it referred to the actual undertaking and not the undertaking itself’. Could you explain further. If you have a deeper understanding of this then I’m perfectly prepared to accept your point of view. Bernard Cornwell had obviously done a great deal of research when he put this into the forward of the first book in the series ‘The Last Kingdom’. Could you provide your credentials? I’m very interested to know. I was always convinced that Vikings referred to the collective peoples who invaded England (and many other parts of Europe and further afield) during the 9th century and onwards. It was only reading BCs forward that convinced me otherwise.
@@christophersayrs907 and people do actually say ‘I tripped’ in more than one context 😂. Especially if they’ve been dabbling if you get my meaning😜. Just adding a little humour.
@@christophersayrs907 But it is not a people? You seem to be getting very muddled., Whether it is a noun or a verb is not the issue here, the issue is whether it was actually applied to a specific group of people. Evidence would suggest that it was not. We had 'Pirates' but they could have been from anywhere. In fact Vikings and Pirates are very similar, in that they attacked from the sea, raped, pillaged, took slaves and went! No one has every suggested that Pirate was a race? So why is Viking?
@@hogwashmcturnip8930 I disagree that the issue is "whether it was actually applied to a specific group of people," and thank you terribly much for foisting the muddiness upon me, while it appears that you, dear sir, are the one getting very muddled. "Viking" is a noun, and if you'd read above, it did apply to a very specific group: "a group of people related to Vik (perhaps Erik, but this reference is, alas, lost). It ALSO applies to a raid by those related to Vik, and even a ship owned/used by a group of people related to Vik. "Pirates," take anyone as you said, so your analogy is poor, indeed. Did you read above? Wuffing means those related to Wuffa and Viking means those related to Vik. C'mon now. Read.
I can actually trace my ancestry directly back to Lady Alice Stourton de Berkeley, from which point I can further trace my ancestry directly back to Alfred the Great, Cnut the Great, and Uhtred the Bold. I know that makes me just one of millions, but it makes this story all the more interesting to me. I'd be happy to share details of the lineage if you're interested.
This is full of great information, but it is a bit misleading for those who are drawn in by the title, and who are not aware that Cornwell's character is entirely fictitious. This piece should state off the bat that the only Uhtred was the Bold, who lived over a Centurty later, and had no role in the key period of Alfred and Edwards' time frame of unifying Wessex and the other Saxon kingdoms. Nicely done piece on him, though.
It would also be better if it had used pictures of the actual places too, not random ones of foreign places. Also the First king of England was king of Mercia initially, not Wessex. Mercia absorbed Wessex not the other way around.
Please read my other comments I have left in this post . Uhtred the Bold was not the Uhtred of The Last Kingdom and they were both real people within my family tree . The stories are just elaborated from what was known of Uhtred around the time of Alfred The Great by a historical novelist whom is descended from the Uhtred family .
@@Mark64W Actually the author makes it quite clear that the Uhtred in The Last Kingdom is fictional, a mesh of many people who were or might have been and a plot device to show the unification of the kingdoms. Page 333 of the first book, The Last Kingdom
If you love the show don’t start reading the books. There addicting! I can’t watch the show anymore because the books are so detailed my brain spends the entire time knit-picking every little thing.
It was a good show, but it sounds like a whole lot of it was made up nonsense. I don't know why they couldn't tell the story accurately. It sounds very interesting without some idiot writer putting their greasy fingers all over it.
My thoughts exactly. It is interesting, as long as you take on board it is about as historically accurate as LOTR or GoT. I call it the Last Snoredom because it is the same week after week. I like looking for the Magical sword! The one he loses, or has taken from him, yet next scene it is back! Also the way he becomes blonde when he is shagging! Fun, but please Don't sell it as 'Accurate' It's like telly shows of the 60s, with better tech. . You know what will happen before it does. You know any Romantic interest is doomed, his friends will die, his gerbil will die... (OK I made the gerbil up!) It is just 21st century Cheeseville. And he is not that 'honourable' either is he, as he has betrayed pretty much everybody who stood by him. My version of 'The Last Kingdom', Episode One and most of 2., Uthred stays loyal to his adopted family. The End.
These mini docs. Need to be added to all historical fiction movies and T.V. shows. Otherwise people will believe what they see in the film instead of actual history.
Too late! They already do. I have had people quote lines from 'The Tudors' at me as though it was verbatim! Yeah ,like the producers were sat in Henry and Anne's private apartment in 1536 with a tape recorder! You have to wonder where we are going, when people can longer tell fact from fiction. It is Scary. Because it means they will buy into Any Lie. As has already been proved
THE LAST KINGDOM ES PARA MI UNA DE LAS MEJORES SERIES LOS ÚLTIMOS TIEMPOS, LA ACTUACIÓN DE ALEXANDER DREIMON ES MAGNÍFICA, ME ENCANTA Y LA CAMADERIA CON SUS COMPAÑEROS Y LAS BATALLAS SON UNICAS,LO QUE MÁS ME GUSTA ES QUE AL FINAL, SE COBRA TODO LO QUE LE HICIERON LOS REYES,TODA LA VIDA QUÉ LE ROBARON, NO PUDO DISFRUTAR DE SUS HIJOS PERO LE PAGARON TODO EL MAL QUE LE HICIERON.
I think Waltheof' II's daughter married David the Saint, King of Scots. Therefore the later Kings of Scots and Kings of England are descended from him. I think Waltheof II was given the title ''Earl of Huntingdon', by William the Conqueror, with the result that the Kings of Scots had this title. Because of Royal Scottish descent, the Hastings family gained the the title 'Earl of Huntingdon' (1472?) which they still have today.
Facts. It was said that each season was based on 2 books...... since Cornwell wrote 3 more books before the seasons ended..... They are basing the Movie of the final 3 books.
Waaay better than overhyped Vikings. good books, insanely closer to real history and just really really good. vikings deserves its reuputation till it went downhill, its decent, but id rather watch TLK 5 times than vikings.
They're all fiction. As is A Song of Ice and Fire, which The Game of Thrones is based on. That book series is inspired by my Plantagenet, Merovingian and Capetian ancestors. This includes the Red Wedding (I have two) and the Wall, inspired by Hadrian's Wall.
Uthred was a descendant of both the ealdermen of Bamburgh and a powerful thegn of Aethelstan from Mercia of the same name (Uthred being probably his grandson). Uthred is a Mercian name. In Alfred's time, the ealdermen of Bamburgh were crafty rulers who managed to deal with the Scots, the Welsh, and most importantly the Vikings keeping them at bay. They had a limited relationship with Alfred swearing an oath to him of friendship providing relics of Saint Cuthbert. I suspect that Alfred gave them in return silver and relics from southern saints. In 894, Aethelnoth led either an embassy or an army to York and may have met Osberth and Eardwulf of Bamburgh while in Northumbria. Cornwell created a composite character combining elements from the life of his ancestor and those of Aethelnoth, the Ealdorman of Somerset and a later abbot during Edward, Aethelstan, Edmund, and Eared's reigns, who lived past Edmund's time, living into his 90s. Aethelnoth's granddaughter maried Aethelweard the Chronicler after meeting the elderly survivor of Alfred's wars at the estate of Edington (Wiltshire) in 953 during one of King Eared's Witans and hearing Aethelnoth's stories. The meeting had a profound impact on Aethelweard, who arranged in his old age for one of his grandson to be named, Aethelnoth. Aethelnoth's deeds were important and his long life kept the memories of Alfred's wars alive for numerous generations of West Saxons and Mercians in the tenth centuries.

Absolutely loved Vikings and valhala now The last Kingdom 👌loved all the history about all the different kings and the viking leaders, Watch them all you won't be disappointed, we need more of these programs
More last kingdom content coming out !!
Absolutely love this series. Loved Bamburgh castle when I went there years ago and so knew the story but this series so brought it to life. Love Uthred.
Great video. Bud... Cant wait for the the film of the last kingdom. 7. Kings must die. The headline alone it should tell us it will be really good..
7 Kings? Must be about the Battle of Brunanburgh.
I read the books, some more than once. They are fabulous. Bernard Cornwell is probably my favorite author. The Sharpe’s Rifles series is also fabulous, and Sean Bean made a wonderful Richard Sharpe on tv. Thank you for the history here, tho it’s quite the spoiler to hear of Uhtred’s assassination.
Hello Maria, how are you doing today???
I adore Bernard Cornwell's novels, he is a magnificent writer! I have all the novels, the dvds of the Sharpe series and have my local video store guy finding me The Last Kingdom dvd series too. I will have to get him to go after the movie when it comes out.
@@laurag7295 You are a fan! I just finished the Witcher book series, and it’s very good. Beautifully written. The Poldark books are excellent.
@@maramakesjournals2319 thanks !
He's my Favorite Author as well.
You know he was pretty useless when he's called 'the unready'
@Brandon Letzco oh I see!
He wasn't called that in his time, and Unready meant he was not made ready (advised or counselled). His name Æthelred actually means the opposite
This has been the best series I have ever seen. Now have my husband watching it so he’ll understand the movie when released. Can’t wait. Perfect choices for each actor. ❤
I always thought uhtred was fictional character thank u, amazing video Ollie
Thank you for watching !!!
Loved The Last Kingdom. I read all the books. They are excellent
Loved the Last Kingdom and was upset that it's finished as we have so many channels to watch but so few quality shows are out there but I found this excellent RUclips video and it's making up for no more Last Kingdom.
We still have the movie coming, Seven Kings Must Die.😉
@@AliciaFrvr Exvcellent :)
such a shame they didn't keep the storyline the same as the book series , The books are a lot better .
I loved this show. I wish they could have more 😡
I just found that I am a descendant of Uhtred th Bold, so exciting. This series makes it all feel very real. @rhonda, have a nice day.
So am I ! My grandmother was called Helen Oughtred and I'm a distant cousin of Bernard Cornwell . Pleased to meet you .
Ancestor? I think you meant descendant.
I spelled "the" wrong. Thank you, I misspoke.@@rhondajkestin
@lisawest6533 If you're an ancestor means Uhtred is a descendant (born through one of your children). Considering how long ago Uhtred lived, you HAVE to have possibly been born to one of HIS descendants.
Okay I understand. I misspoke. You can be right. Move on girl.@@rhondajkestin
My favorite show ever, along with Titantic. Alexander Dreymon did a fantastic job in the role of Uhtred and it is hard to see him as any other character. I raise my cup to all the actors and how well they played their characters.
I normally never watched these kinds of genre, but I tried the Vikings show and liked that so I tried the last kingdom and fell in love. Now I’m a big fan of these genres :D
Edit: ok guys, recommend me a show like Vikings/last kingdom. Thanks ;)
Rome from hbo. It's considered the first mega TV show that inspired GoT or Spartacus style epics
Vikings Valhala [series - Amazing!]
Set more than 100 years after the events of Vikings, the Netflix series has followed the increased tensions between the Vikings and the native English, as well as the warring factions of the traditional pagan Vikings and those with Christian beliefs.
@@jennydany watched it ;) liked the first season. Second season was meh .
@@Dilly_Dil1y I see. Personally, I most liked the Vikings Valhalla 2nd season, because of the dramatically escalated action, plus its historical knowledge. Also, the battle scenes were grate. Now waiting for the Season 3...
Spoilers! Great video 👌
Thank you F L!
Thanks for the history lesson. I loved the series. "Destiny is all."
Trying to learn actual Viking history after watching tLK Vikings and Vikings: Valhalla is really hard I’ve found
I had previously read that there were two or three Uhtreds (the first, second, etc.), and indeed, the great warrior did come later, as pointed out here.
Excelente serie. La Vi en 3 días. Me encantó la actuación de Alexander. Cómo uhtreed. Genial 👍
I also loved this series and the books too. I wish more of Bernard Cornwell's books were TV series.
I really like it and repeated again watching after finishing the series.
I studied European History and found the series almost accurate. Thanks
want to watch Seven Kings Must Die. A continuation of some sort for the series
Discovers Uhtred the bold is related to him and then proceeds to turn him into an unkillable warrior god
Uhtred is one of my great grandfathers as well :)
That is so cool!
It's amazing that you could trace your ancestry back that far. I'm REALLY impressed 👍.
Yeah how did you trace it back that far? I'd be interested to see how far back I could trace my own
Mine too !
The information I have about the family was the same that was given to BC about the Oughtred family by John Hayes Jenkinson from Canada in the 1960's .
Keep these coming please I just starting this show and I need the history on everyone. ❤️
I just finished the show last week, your in for a treat! I absolutely loved it.
Yes, same here. I just started season 2. I didn't realize how many seasons the show ran for. I got a lot to catch up on...
The Historical Truth is a far better story than any of 'Hollyweird' machinations.
Infelizmente a série deixou a desejar! A história vai além do que fou contada e o final, bem mesmo com o filme, Deus pra dar um final correto
The books The Saxon Stories that were the inspiration for the show are among my absolute favorites. Cornwell's descriptive writing draws you in and the description of battle makes you feel like you're there.
Loved The Last Kingdom programme. Hope the real Uthread was as handsome as the one in the T.V. series!!
he doesn’t have to be..
im still waiting for the season 5. i cant wait to see more Uthred's adventures. the best series on netflix
Love the series. At season 4 now. I was convinced by a friend to give it a chance because I loved vikings
Already finished I assume? I would rank this right after Vikings. Nothing else comes close to both

So the real historic details are fairly different from the Last Kingdom books?
One of my favorite series of all time! I do wonder; how does someone truly know if they're descended from a historical figure? I feel like the only thing I'd trust is a DNA test. Lol
why is everyone saying that uhtred is their grandfather, litteraly found 5 people saying that they have him on either their maternal or paternal side hahahahhah
They had never heard of him before the tv series! And as the character is Fictional, where does that leave them? Personally I am descended from the Cheshire cat! I sit in a tree and watch people make fools of themselves on YT And Grin a lot!
I'll never get over Leofric's death. Baby monk was bad, but Leofric hit differently.. and it was out of NOWHERE.
no doubt. nicked in his neck out of the blue. favorite character of the show.
That one was hard and so was Beocca but Brida was painful to watch.

I think the show version of Uthred is combination of generations of knights that served the crown or something like this!
I read this as well.
I think this is correct
I've watched the Last Kingdom series many times, and enjoy it more with each viewing. This video was a "must-watch", for me. Thanks!
I've been friends with Alex for 16 years...it's so cool seeing him as the face of these types of videos!
I Love Alex. He is a wonderful actor, is fantastic as Uhtred and he seems to be a genuinely nice man.
He deserves all the attention he's no doubt getting now from the industry and fans.
Next time you see or speak with him please tell him Hello from me in Sydney, Australia. Cheers. 🍻

As a northwest German from the old Saxon homeland Westphalia I felt very much connected with the Angles and Saxon history of England... Sadly the Norman's conquered England...we would have a totally other England when this never happened..
I agree.
Literally watched the series so i could get to the movie and man did i fall in love and finish the lot in a couple days.

There have been a few videos based on this guys. Your video had been the best. Destiny is all!
Thank you so much! Destiny is all!
Edmund ironside sounds like a cool character, respected by both sides and an amazing swordsman
He truly was! Check out my video on him!
Did the real life Uhtred never age after he was 16?!?!?!?
Was too much of a beast to age
@@christophersayrs907 I get you. Somebody better tell Bernard lol.
Another excellent video from HP
I totally binge watched this from start to finish and have just watched seven kings must die on netflix will binge watch again from start to finish
Destiny is all!!!!! Uhtred forever!!!!!!
Love the show and this was a refreshing history lesson. Thanks
Very interesting. It's cool to know that great shows about the Vikings are actually based on real people. Thanks for the info... 💯
Fascinating history and excellently presented.
Yet to finish with season 5 of Last Kingdom. The story and the content are off point. Planning on naming my son Uhtred and the daughter as Brida
If you love the show don’t start reading the books. There addicting! I can’t watch the show anymore because the books are so detailed my brain spends the entire time knit-picking every little thing.
Just as Wintercastra becomes Winchester
Loidis becomes Leeds
Cornwhelas becomes Cornwall
So Bebbanberg becomes Bed & Breakfast
Hahaha!
Jesus Christ is savior
I think Waltheof' II's daughter married David the Saint, King of Scots. Therefore the later Kings of Scots and Kings of England are descended from him. I think Waltheof II was given the title ''Earl of Huntingdon', by William the Conqueror, with the result that the Kings of Scots had this title. Because of Royal Scottish descent, the Hastings family gained the the title 'Earl of Huntingdon' (1472?) which they still have today.
Very interesting. I have read all of the books and have thoroughly enjoyed the series. Wish there were more episodes.
I’m from Durham and my ancestors come from Northumbria.. interesting. I enjoyed the series.
The book series "The Saxon Stories" is what they based "The Last Kingdom" on. There are 13 books.
Facts. It was said that each season was based on 2 books...... since Cornwell wrote 3 more books before the seasons ended..... They are basing the Movie of the final 3 books.
Ive never been so captivated by the same thing happening over and over. Amazing series
This "true" story seems even better than the fictional one
Waaay better than overhyped Vikings. good books, insanely closer to real history and just really really good.
vikings deserves its reuputation till it went downhill, its decent, but id rather watch TLK 5 times than vikings.
The actor should be next 007 bond.. would be a great one 👍
The TRUTH is always better. Great story. The romanticized series it pretty good, but I knew the REAL story was more sobering.🙌🏾✌🏾
Nine minutes later and the timelines and plots of Vikings, Vikings: Valhalla and The Last Kingdom have been trashed. Well done!
Thanks Bearnard for this great series... The lost kingdom.
