    Getting one of those security bits really helps this process. I'm glad I got one.

      I feel like these have pretty much become a required tool to be in the hobby these days. Thanks so much for watching!

    When you used the eraser to rub off the sharpie I had one of those “I though I was the only one” moments. Great minds think alike.

    • @KindaCool
      @KindaCool  2 года назад +3

      Right? Something as simple as a pencil eraser can really make this whole process work!

      @@KindaCool I did find out the hard way that if you press too hard it will smooth out the texture of a SNES cart. Oh well, live and learn.

      @@therealbitwars That’s a good point, if you go a little too aggressive with the eraser it can remove a little more of the pebbled texture! I hit this one very lightly as the alcohol had already done most of the heavy lifting…

    This was fun! The three cleaning products I use are rubbing alcohol, goo gone, and n-heptane. Between those three, I can pretty much remove anything, although you have to be careful with that n-heptane.

    • @KindaCool
      @KindaCool  2 года назад +1

      I've used a bit of goo gone in the past, but never n-heptane. I may have to add that to the arsenal, thanks!

      Agreed. I'm always curious as to what people are doing to clean their carts. That's assuming they even DO clean their carts, I know putting in all of this work isn't for everyone!

      @@KindaCool I do mine very similar to yours. More in detail for the pricier carts. I usually just clean the pins. I usually leave the marker or cosmetic stuff unless it's horrible. Moreso, cause its like the story of the cartridge in a way, but in another way because I have too many cartridges. Haha. But this is a great in depth way to clean them up. I am very much on par with everything in this video. Good stuff!

    Nicely done on the camera work! I like the cut q-tip trick. I've heard some people use rain-x for permanent marker, but never tried it. I pretty much just use IPA and brasso (but only when IPA doesn't do the trick). Always have to follow up that little bit of brasso with several passes of IPA afterwards. Very noice~

    • @KindaCool
      @KindaCool  2 года назад +1

      Yep, I've heard that about Brasso - it works really well, but you have to clean up after it. I guess I'm willing to stick with the elbow grease route if it gives me piece of mind that nothing bad is going onto the console pins. I know there would always be a little part of me wondering "Did I clean it all off?!" :D

      @@KindaCool I’ve never had an issue after using it. I use about half the size of a pea for both sides, then a couple passes of alcohol. Usually not needed, but good to have just in case.

    This is very helpful! Ill definitely refer to this next time I clean a cart. Well, that's pretty soon. I bought some Colecovision carts that were in rough shape.but the labels also need cleaning. Any advice on what to use on the labels? Trying to avoid alcohol to prevent the fading you mentioned.

    • @KindaCool
      @KindaCool  2 года назад +1

      Start with the most gentle thing and work your way up. Dry towel first, while agitating the debris with your finger, if that doesn't do anything, then add a very light dash of water to the towel. Watch very carefully as you go and adjust accordingly if it starts to go south. If water is not doing the job and you are willing to risk it, dilute some alcohol with water and give that a shot, but don't let it sit on the label for very long. I don't have much experience with Colecovision, but if they are anything like Atari, you may have your work cut out for you! ;)
