  • We ride the stunning Royal Enfield Classic 350 (in Chrome Bronze) across Wales to Snowdonia National Park, all on backroads, to establish whether this is the best backroad motorbike money can buy.
In the most stunning location, The Ol' Man discusses this Modern Classic bike in an interesting review, and makes some very pertinent points.
Beautifully filmed, and with some awesome riding shots, with great audio of the sound of the bike (you can really hear the engine and exhaust), this is not only an interesting motorcycle review, but a visual joy.

    What a great review.
You see a bike that looks like they’ve perfected the aesthetics and wonder if it’s actually any good. The review soon answers that for us. I’m getting one.

I've had one about a year! It's a great bike, but:
      - In real world usage in the US, the power is just not enough for anything but surface street errands. Back roads in the US are not as narrow and slow as in the UK, so my bike is outclassed and honestly not sufficiently grunty for many of them.
      - US supply chain is a nightmare. I waited 3 months after my speedometer died in the spring for a replacement, and the replacement fails IN THE SAME WAY on the day it was replaced. Now I'm waiting for another.

I find myself being the odd one out here in Sweden, in that I like "slow" motorcycles. Everyone here is obsessed with torque and speed and either ride sport bikes or harleys, very few riders here seem to care about cruising around at comfortable speeds and enjoying the scenery like I do. I had someone the other day literally laugh at me and say if I don't want to ride at at least 250km/h "I have no business riding a motorcycle." And it was a woman, too, believe it or not. So much for women being the sensible ones! Seeing this video is refreshing, it seems UK motorcycle culture is a lot more reasonable than Sweden's...

Those kind of people are full of it. I see many people with big capacity bikes just struggling to control them and drop them....and on country roads like you get in the UK and much of Europe they can be a handful, and no fun.
Too much power can be dangerous whilst loads of torque makes for lazy riders who can't ride a lower power bike within its power range using the gears.

Thats exactly what I am thinking! In Austria we haven’t open motorways like in Germany. Our speedlimit is 130 km/h. And on Highway anyway 100km/h. And 2.6l /100km is just a dream in my opinion.
As I was 17-22 I always wanted a superbike. Currently I am 26 and will make my drivers license next year and I am definitely buy the 350! Although I also got in love with the Kawasaki w800 which has 48PS.
Would be better for longer trips, especially on motorways BUT 10k as a beginner is too risky if anything bad happens, 5.6k is more forgiving costly wise I think.
One thing I am consodering is the interceptor… Perfect mix between RE 350 and W800, costs about 7.5k and has 48PS.
Its so hard to decide… as a beginner and in terms of saving money RE 350 is the rational pick.
      What do you think?

I own an RE 500 classic (my second one) and an RE Interceptor (INT 650 here in the States) I have 2 scooters as well and a Janus 450. I took my 650 in today to have my brakes looked at, while there I test rode a 350 classic. I have read/watched every review on this bike. They do not do it justice. I was BLOWN AWAY by how absolutely comfortable it is. The riding position, The seat, The Absolute SMOOTHNESS of the engine. The supple suspension. My God. It is, BY FAR the most comfortable 2 wheeled conveyance I have ever ridden. (the 650 is smooth but the foot position is Terrible!) My only concern was the lack of energy at 60MPH. Lots of freeways here, they are an inevitable part of any ride here in Oregon. Two. Just TWO more horsepower and it would be 100% Perfect. In spite of this, I was ready to trade in my 650 for one.. but they offered only $2,000 in trade in value. My 650 is the Chrome version with extras, it was, when I bought it, $8,000 out the door and it only has 2,200 miles on it. I think I'll have to sell my 650 to a private buyer and then get that 350!

I have a Classic 500 and an Interceptor as well, but I haven't ridden the 350. I must have one of the smoother Classic 500s because the vibration doesn't bother me, sure it's a bit vibey but it doesn't cause me issues. The reason I'm posting though is that there's a Classic 650 in the works, variously predicted to be released sometime in 2024 or maybe early 2025. Now that would be a hell of a bike I reckon, the power of the 650 and the ergonomics of a Classic.

Great video, very thoughtful. I bought a Hunter 350 earlier this year for the very same reasons: to explore the back roads where I live in West Cork, Ireland. I still have my 650 V-Strom (which I intend to keep for longer distances on the main roads), but I never really used it for those tiny and really tight single track roads with grass growing down the middle, often with nowhere to turn if you found yourself facing downhill at a dead end and bullocks grazing in the field ahead. For this kind of exploring, these small 350s are ideal, with nothing to worry about that could possibly sully the pleasure. And these long stroke engines just sound great!

So much so that I almost bought the RE Classic 350 after your last review. The fact that I didn't is down to sentimental reasons and a bit of pig-headedness. If the there had been a kick-start and the gear change had been on the right, I probably would have done it. In the end, I saved a bit of money (🤞) in buying an 1960s AJS lightweight 350. A 350cc single has the right power and torque for 99% of the riding I do. Motorcycles with styling that would be over the top for a kid's plastic ray-gun water pistol just don't appeal to me. RE have got the style just about right. It looks every inch a proper motorbike, IMHO.

You are so right about the mudguards, the Classic 350 is very much an exception in this regard. Last year I bought a Honda NC750X, Honda's practical, do everything motorcycle. Even so, I ordered a mudguard extender before I even received the bike, because the mudguard of the NC is obviously too short like on 99% of modern motorcycles. Finding an extender was no problem at all, several companies make them for this model alone. Why is that? Because everyone knows that short mudguards are useless crap (or they design motorcycles and have never actually owned one). So keep complaining about this foolishness, you'll get a thumbs up from me every time.

I concur with almost all of what you said. I haven’t experienced the throttle on/off issue that you have. Perhaps it’s just that particular bike. I have fitted a Hitchcock’s de-cat pipe, which lets the engine breathe a bit better, without being too loud. I have also fitted the open air filter cover, but unsure whether to leave it on due to the induction roar being annoying on longer rides. I have an Interceptor 650 too, but I find myself reaching for the 350 more often. Plus, the 350 is more popular with viewers of my YT channel.

For the first time ever I am not thinking what bike shall I get next, this bike just does it all and puts a smile on your face every time you ride it.
I have not noticed a problem with the throttle and my bike is stock other than black comfort seats to replace the brown standard seats, bar end mirrors and Daytona heated grips. As far as I can see unless you must travel at over 70 miles an hour all the time this is the perfect bike 😊

I own a classic and I can understand the feeling. You can own a powerful bike but you need to always control that power and most of the time you can’t use it to max unless you are a crazy person therefore classic makes a lot of sense when you want to push it and when you just want to enjoy the ride at a slow pace. Although it can’t compete with those powerful bikes on a motorway but backroads are the place where it shines. You may take a note that RE bikes and specially classic is famous to get you to the highest roads in the world over Himalayas in India. If I can I would like to take a ride at least once in my lifetime on my classic 350.

I saw these at a bike show earlier this year. To my eyes, they are the prettiest of all the retro styled bikes on the market except maybe for the Meguro K3, but that's not sold outside Japan so for most of us it doesn't count. Many of us who have never ridden the Classic 350 think we would prefer if RE offered a 500-650 classic thumper, but perhaps such a bike wouldn't have the charm of the 350.

I ride it to work most days and go for fun rides and I never want to come home....I initially took this and a Interceptor 650 out when I was looking at a new bike and even though the Int 650 is faster, it just didn't have the feel of the Classic. I really love this bike, it's capable, comfortable and fun to ride. I used to ride sports bikes, I had a lot of fun but speed was all I was interested in. And they are still sensible today
    I currently have a Sportster 1200 and a Yamaha tw200

I watch other bike reviewers and they complain about that the finish on the front of the engine is worn away/faded/rusted........no sh!t Sherlock!!!!, the bike has been ridden with with the wheels blasting sand/gravel etc. on the bike...its akin to a having it sandblasted every time it is ridden. Last year I bought a front rubber mud flap to add to my GS1150, the only place I could get one was from India, go figure and RE's are made in India, they learned in India from their climatic conditions, how to have function over style.

I bought the very same bike in Thailand. It's just the right size for getting around the streets & roads where I live, and this is a world of scooters. It's just the right size, providing the right amount of power, maneuverability and size to fit right in with the added challenge of parking on Thai streets. It certainly gets the looks. So much nicer than the stock standard Honda and Suzukis that permeate my environs. As for smoothness, it's brilliant. I can't believe how good it is. I have a little nippy 150 Vespa, and I find the RE 350 way smoother to ride. I was also thinking of holding off for the 650, but the reality of this, it's a bike that suites the backroads and tight streets of Thailand. Sure it would be nice to have the 650, but your review re-affirms the reason I bought the bike. It's a no brainer. In the USA, the opposite would be true because of the roads and distances travelled.
Regarding the throttle issue, I do believe it is a mapping thing. I am thinking of purchasing the FuelX Pro for my bike, and I do believe that might address the issue you are talking about. It would be great if you fitted that and did a review on the device. I'd certainly be interested. I saw that Fuzzy Biker did one, but he also changed the cam and air filter as well, and claimed he picked up another 5 hp. That's considerable, and smoother and more responsive throttle, to boot. Just a thought. Let us know if you do do that. I'll check back in again.

RE have done their home work and made an incredible unit for people, thats vale for money, looks amazing and is affordable for the common person. Thats a big deal, the more average guys and girls who can get into this sport the better, because its a great hobby. A clever person would purchase a bunch and rent them out as part of a ride group, you may have to improve the exhaust note but.
