  • I pull the timing cover off this 24 valve Cummins to perform the killer dowel pin (KDP) fix. I was surprised by what I found. I also changed the water pump and tensioner pulley while I was in there.

    Dynahoe’s where the shit back in the day. My father had a 1975 International Harvester 3400 back-hoe that he bought new. We used to remove and install things for our trucks and equipment. I can’t tell you how many times we used that back-hoe…??? I’m thankful to have a buddy with a track-hoe that helps me out now, dad passed away 20 years ago and my mother sold everything. Its good to have friends to help you out.

    I literally had almost the exact same comment about how easy it was to change that water pump. Yeah the engine was out of the truck but even if it was installed, I could see it being pretty easy. Less hassle than a small block V8 and definitely less hassle than a sideways V6/I4. Recently found your channel and I'm liking your work. You just got a new sub!

  • @GormanRepairs
    @GormanRepairs 3 года назад +1

    If you get it done then you did it right, but just a tip, you can use the tensioner the opposite way to hold the belt tighter which will keep the pullies from slipping better and if you hit the wrench on the fan nut straight down with a hammer nice and hard first it tends to crack the rusty nut loose pretty easily

    He said it was a 99, and according to my research, starting in 98.5 Cummins addressed the kdp issue when they came out with the 24v design.

  • @1320fastback
    @1320fastback Год назад

    On the 12 valves you should remove, clean and loctite the timing case bolts too. They probably have taken out more engines than the KDP ever has. You usually will find them finger tight.

  • @MGRDiesel
    @MGRDiesel 4 года назад +7

    Dowel pin is not common in 24 valves is the 12 valve you have to worry about it. Nice work anyway

    • @WaldosWorld
      @WaldosWorld  4 года назад +2

      After all these years, it looked like it hasn't budged, so yeah, perhaps not an issue with this engine

    • @ryanjensen4097
      @ryanjensen4097 3 года назад

      Cummins went to the stepped gear case (dowel pin and bolt next to it are not at the same level) some time around 02. On those engines, they made the dowel pin hole smaller than the pin at the front so it is not possible for it to come out. I’m not sure why they don’t just make it a blind hole since there is never a reason for the pin to come out that way.

    The killer dowel pin was only an issue on the 12v. Deboss garage talks about it.

  • @michaelbenoit248
    @michaelbenoit248 2 года назад

    I know this is old, but isn’t that a 53 block? 1998.5-2002. Some 24v blocks were made in Mexico, & don’t have the issue of the Brazilian 53 block that cracks at the water jacket.
    Hope you got the truck cheap if it is a 53. Cuz when it comes time for a rebuild most shops probably wouldn’t rebuild a 53 or they’ll tell you it’s not worth it.

  • @kooldoozer
    @kooldoozer 4 года назад

    I did not see you use a torque wrench on the bolt that holds the tab for the dowel pin. You used the torque on everything else, except the most critical fastener.

  • @dregenius

    Is it just me or did the old water pump appear to use a more efficient (and expensive to manufacture) impeller design? The impeller on the new pump looked like it was stamped from some old rusty metal roofing and then spray painted silver at a factory in Inner Mongolia 😂😂😂

    • @WaldosWorld
      @WaldosWorld  4 года назад

      Hmm, I'm not an impeller design expert, but you might be right. I bought a Gates brand water pump expecting it to be of reasonably high quality... 🤔
