What amazing progress you have achieved in just a couple of years
Your vids are probably the best watch on RUclips for this kind of stuff!
Wow, thank you so much! 🤩
Wow it’s hard to believe you only had 100 subscribers at this point. I just found this channel last night amd can’t stop watching. Your videos are edited so well.
I am only finding now and I'm addicted. 1 million here we cone
I'm late to the game but he's nearly at 300,000 in Oct. 2023. I agree that his production skills are great. I have to set a ten episode per night limit or I will watch until the sun comes up. A very talented young man.
For the future you could throw down some ply would or sheet metal that’s strong enough to hold the wait or something so the casters don’t dig into the dirt
Plywood first next time. Also, remove hood. Use end loader to pull engine. Love puppy!
Build yourself new dirt driveway friendly casters for the engine crane. Also as a suggestion always remove the hood when removing a engine, it's less apt to be nit only in the way but, give you more lifting room. I must say I like your videos.
"Approaching 100 subscribers" comment made me laugh, I'm watching this now and there is 41.1k subscribers. Waldo I hope you get a million+ subscribers, I'm not sure how I got onto your channel but I love your work and your vids, keep up the great work!
He’s got 79K now in just a month
I don't know if anyone else has suggested this .. but you should make some metal skids for the wheel area of the engine hoist so it will slide easy on gravel and you could make them removable for inside the garage
I was going to suggest: just take the two wheels off at the heavy end
Here's a suggestion for cataloging and organizing parts: Sharpie and heavy duty Ziploc bags. Place bolts / small parts for each component in bag and label. It takes extra time on disassembly, but it makes reassembly much, much faster. I used this method for the first time in 1993 when I replaced a frame on a wrecked 1992 Chevy truck. I have been using this method since then. My most recent was converting a 1998 Dodge 12 valve Cummins from 2WD to 4WD - another frame swap.
I replaced my old Bluebird engine hoist with the same Harbor Freight hoist because the Bluebird could not lift the 5.9L Cummins and NV4500. Replace the swivel casters at the load end of the hoist with 4" fixed casters. The fixed casters are stronger and they actually make the hoist easier to maneuver. My old Bluebird hoist was built like that.
Wow, thanks for the tips! I'm sure you have a ton of small parts with a frame swap! Good call on the castors. Also the hardware supplied by Harbor Freight is generally garbage...the bolts break so easily.
Waldo, you have great content, keep it up broder 🤟🏿 can't wait till your channel blows up to be huge. It's got all that the pieces to the puzzle to be great!!
Wow, thank you so much! 🤩
So awesome to hear you mention approaching 100 subscribers, and now you’re at 241k! Keep it up man, love your videos!!
i came for the awesome truck, stayed for the great videos. Keep at it!
Thank you so much!!
Don't know if you already know but you can get prefabbed engine brackets specifically for your Cummins swap. That was the route I ended up going even though I could have easily made my own. I just wanted the comfort of knowing that my engine would be lined up perfectly straight with the rest of the driveline
Yeah, I've seen some pre-fabbed brackets, but I was shocked by the price. My concern (other than price) is that I don't know if they'll line up exactly where I want the engine front-to-back. I have plenty of steel plate on hand, so it'll be easy enough to just make my own and I know I'll get the engine exactly where I want it.
Love the dog!!
Another fantastic video ,many thanks , good to see Dino put to use again , interesting to see how it plumbs in with the various hoses , its the small things like Speedo drive hope fully drive shaft will be similar length , can't wait for next episode !
Thanks Steve! The speedo might actually be the hardest part of the swap because the GMC has its speed sensor in the transmission, but the Dodge donor truck has the speed sensor in the rear axle, so I'm going to have to figure something out!
Have the same hoist and the same thing happened to me when I did my Cummins swap. I ended up buying a pair of 700lb capacity rigid steel caster wheels and welded them to the bottom on the front of the hoist frame. My swap was a 1987 Chevy V20 4x4 6.2L for a 1996 12 valve P-pump with compound turbos and swapped out my old TH-400 automatic and installed a Dodge NV4500 which mated perfectly to my NP208 transfer case. Rear drive shaft fit perfect and had to have my front lengthened 3.25 inches
Thanks for the tip on the caster wheels! Sounds like you had a pretty cool project!
Hardly fair to blame HF for a cheap engine lift when you are abusing it that much! Had you bought a balance beam and lifted out properly you would have reduced the stress on it to a more normal level. Even then picking a diesel is on the ragged edge. Common sense when using tools is fairly important. Used improperly you can break the most expensive ones.
You have a good point, for sure. I was definitely pushing the limits of the tool. Luckily I've since replaced the castors with quality components, so I don't see that issue happening again
You could help in preventing the hoist from sinking bye using 3\4 plywood. I use 4 sheets to help
You should’ve put that engine hoist on some plywood. Would’ve made it much easier for you. Live the video, keep it up! 👌👌
Time duration to remove engine. 10 mins. Time duration to remove all the preceding components. 10 hours. Lol.
Hahaha yes, fastest engine removal ever!
Don't bash Harbor Freight! That hoist is meant for a smooth, SOLID surface.
Can't wait to see it done. I'm loving your videos and I plan on doing the same thing with my 3500hd so please be very specific and informative on everything when installing the Cummins as you go because it's important information to me. Thanks!
Thanks! I'll try to go into detail, but feel free to ask questions in the comments if I miss anything!
Another 21 gun salute to Waldo!
When I pulled mine in my dirt driveway I used a 1" plywood to slide on.
Great work man 👌 I’ve been contemplating this swap for my 3500hd as well I’ll be watching closely 💪💪
Thanks, I hope it helps! I think most of the swap will be fairly simple, though there are a handful of tricky bits like the speedo and the transmission-mounted parking brake.
Waldo's World what’s your plan for a clutch pedal?
I bought a clutch pedal and brake pedal out of a manual GMT400 truck at a junkyard in PA (these trucks are getting hard to find with manual transmissions nowadays). It should be plug and play. I plan to adapt it to the Dodge master cylinder.
Waldo's World most excellent yes here in Seattle they are few and far between
Oh man, how your channel as grown since then. 42.8k current subs. You're doing great
Looking forward to more videos!! And I could use some parts off of the 6.5 ;D :)
Thanks! I've already replaced the injection pump and injectors on the 6.5. I'll probably use it in another project.
Waldo, I absolutely love your channel. I do worry though with the amount of contaminants that are released onto the ground during your repairs. I believe those will eventually get into the ground water. Just my thought. I'm now binge watching all of your videos.
U are going to get 100k subs in no time
When i first saw this channel i thought this was a big channel l🤣🤣
Thanks! I can't wait to see where it goes!
I usually just buy a piece of plywood to throw under the hoist and it rolls kind of ok.
Yeah, in retrospect, that probably would've been a good idea 😂
Or take the hood off of the truck and use the loader from the start.
Nice featuring The Dino for the engine pull win.
Yes! That's one of the reasons I prioritized getting Dino fixed first
Hi Waldo, until you have a nice flat surface to work with, why don’t you build a heavy duty engine hoist with small nematic tyres. I’m sure that you could find some small enough for then to ride under your trucks. Or even one that you could change wheels/tyres of your hoist for different vehicles.
Fab channel with great content by the way. 💙🏴
PS or may be a shallow level pit, allowing larger wheel and tyres to ride under your trucks 👍🏻
Use channel iron under your hoist wheels. You can also put chains on the channel iron so you use them as skids when you are dragging it a distance.
Ok Waldo I'm following along, boy that's a lot of labor, but you're young and eager, that helps.....Javi G.
That’s a really cool little truck.
Thank you! 👍
I just realized your name is waldo with a white and red truck while "where's Waldo" has a red and white shirt.👀 I'm on to you Waldo.🤣
Next time you pull engine in dirt or gravel, try putting down steel plates or even plywood. Just a tip. Engine hoist might move better.
Next project: "So I'm adding inflatable tires, independent suspension, and a drive motor to my cheap harbor freight engine hoist. Follow me as I turn this pavement princess of a tool into the world's greatest off-road engine hoist."
keep up the good work keep having fun i'm am watching your videos
HOW ABOUT A BLUE FLATBED OF YOUR COLOR CHOICE TO COMPLEMENT THE SILVER AND WOOD BED SIDES? THAT WOULD LOOK GREAT 😎
Yeah, I was definitely thinking about blue. I'm not sure exactly what shade though. Also there's the challenge of where to get an industrial quality urethane coating. I know POR 15 makes one in "safety blue" that's readily available, but most manufacturers (PPG for example) don't seem to market and sell to non-commercial customers like me 🤷♂️
@@WaldosWorld Great minds think alike 😉. Not sure if it's your style but I know there are tint-able bed lines you can lay down with a regular paint gun, other than that and the safety blue figuring is involved 🤔.
awesome video can't wait for more!!
Thanks!!
@@WaldosWorld your welcome
I am very surprised to see a straight axle under that thing. Maybe it was common back then.
The solid I-beam axle was probably a cheap way to achieve the 5,000 lb axle weight rating if I had to guess 🤷♂️
This truck was designed by GM to compete with the FORD 14,OOO
G.V.W. SUPER DUTY truck's.
I think they did an outstanding job!
You're one lucky dude to actually run across someone scrapping this truck and picking it up the way you did. Lots of Contractor ppl searching for these truck's to avoid getting pinched by the D.O.T. Cops for being overweight, and now your doing this truck one better with this engine swap! " I'd put a dump bed on it myself " or even a flatbed with a hoist under it w/ removable sides. Make it more versatile for yourself.
really cool you doing some thing on the engine so you dont have to later
It seems that the dog got a little distracted in the beginning.
7:00 This is what happens when you misuse tools and abuse the tool beyond all expectations...
To be fair that Harbor freight engine hoise wasn't meant to be used on the dirt none of the last good job.
get some solid filled 8 or 10 wheels and fabricate brackets to work on gravel on front of lift.
In harbor freights defense Waldo they are not designed to be used on dirt, obviously.
❤"as I film this I'm approaching 100 subscribers".... it's a year old and has 24K views...I bet ya didn't expect that...congrats!
cool project
I can use some help putting my motor in my truck,so is taking the transmission out with the engine the Best route or disconnecting it from the transmission.
Don't blame Harbour Freight. You knew what you' were buying. Also it wasn't designed to be used on dirt.
Really good content.
Thanks!
Meanwhile, there's a $40,000 backhoe perfectly capable of moving that truck in the background.
1:43......betcha almost flung that bumper over your head when u took the weight removing it, I almost did to my 98 gmc when replacing it. 😳🙄🙆♂️🤦♂️
Hahaha I've removed it before, but yeah, it is light!
Hi Waldo I have a 6.5 myself and I would like to know if that turbo is for sell
Did you already have a Cummins set up ready to go for that knock?
I picked up a 1999 Dodge Ram for a donor truck.
Hey Waldo great videos. I noticed in one of your videos that you had an HD door laying up against your house. I'm looking to convert my regular door handles on my 3500 to the HD version. I bought the handles already. I need a couple of junk doors for the linkages. Did not know if those were good or junk. I'm local in NH as well. Keep up the good work.
Hey, thanks! Unfortunately, I don't have any extra doors. The door you saw was temporarily removed for body work. I didn't realize that the HDs had different door handles...I learned something new today! 👍
honestly I think it would have been easier to pull the hood and use the tractor to pull the motor than the engine hoist.
A sheet of plywood between the tires of the truck before you start is the best method...not that I know anything about working outside in the dirt..........
1 or 2 sheets of plywood would've worked also, keep from ripping the caster off the hairy freak (harbor freight) cherry picker. 🙊🙈😬🤦♂️
Yeah, that's very true! On the other hand, those were cheap POS casters, so good riddance! I've since replaced them with higher quality fixed casters.
Work hard not smart
Just seeing that backhoe in the back ground makes me wonder
I would buy a square body from the 80s and put that 6.5 Diesel in it.
That would be a great pairing! 👌
Hi is the 5.9 better than GM 6.5.
Yeah, the 5.9 is a much better engine 👌
Could your C3500HD motor fit in my Chevy Silverado 1500 non HD 2002
I think the 6.5 would probably fit in a 1500
@@WaldosWorld do you have an idea where you going to install your motor?
not sure why you didn't use the backhoe to pull the motor in the first place.
How long did it take for you to get the motor out.
Got the motor out,so do I have to remove the front in of the truck to put it back..
How far north in New Hampshire are you? You speak like there's a Canadian influence to your way of saying out; kinda like oot.
Carriers are meant to be used on a hard surface like concrete. And the engine hoist instructions would say this. Tough to blame harbour freight for the very foreseeable results of using it, AND DRAGGING IT HORIZONTALLY, on dirt.
If you didn't have concrete, a strip of steel plate over plywood under the castors would do the job to spread the load and prevent digging into the dirt.
User abuse, not design or quality defect this time.
Castors not carriers.
Why didn't you use backhoe to remove engine.
I am surprised that the guy doesn't just use a few pipes under his engine hoist.
Throw some wagon wheels on that engine hoist and send it /j
I have an 2002 c3500hd that I wanna do the swap in to
Nice! Feel free to comment with any questions about the swap, I might be able to help.
I don't think the "cheap Harbor Freight" hoist is the issue...
Im thinking about doing a 8.1 swap in my c3500hd do you know of anyone else achieved this swap and a 4wd conversion. Like to have mine be 4x4 8.1 dump truck tow rig
put down some metal or plywood next time helps them roll better lol
You have a backhoe. I wouldn't have wrestled with the engine hoist
How come you're not wearing the red & white hat/shirt so it's easier to find you?
Using a angle grinder with the sparks flying away from you is incorrect because when it catches it is going want to fly towards you
put a piece of sheet metal or plywood under your engine hoist instead of letting the wheels rest on the dirt
itll slide better on the dirt with no wheels anyway
I would have put a P400 Navistar 6.5 in it.
Half of me is wondering why you didn't pull the hood and use the tractor overhead.
Waldo another thing you showed us the shed and the lift, why not throw that stab down already and install the lift WTF, seem you're going about this all backwards, so you prefer to struggle doing all these engine swaps and then install the lift, gee I don't know buddy, something is off.....Javi G.
Did you figure out the knock in the 6.5 yet?
Not yet. I'll probably start disassembling it for a rebuild at some point after this Cummins swap
No, that's what happens when you use tools in an unintended manner. Very similar to trying to drive a car underwater. It just will not function in that manner.
Why do you not poor a simple work slab?
I no this an old video but I would of used that tractor to pull that truck back
Yeah, in retrospect, that would've been a good idea 😂
Just me but I would have taken the hood off and used that backhoe to remove the motor.
Like it
why don't just put down some plywood
Take the hood off and use tractor
stop with the music Please.... content only thanks
Don't EVER type 'Cummins Swap' on Google. Ever.
