Third Time Is the First Time! Antique Megamall, Vintage Magnificence

- As we drive around the country, one big name in antique mall-dom keeps appearing, that of the Brass Armadillo chain of giant vintage malls located on the edges of six major American cities! Today, we add their Omaha location to our travels for the first time, and look forward to comparing it to their similarly huge Kansas City and Denver area malls.
The comparisons are good here! Omaha, Nebraska's Brass Armadillo gives better service and better deals on more interesting vintage on this visit, where Sommerso fruit paperweights, a flower power era girl head vase and a hot red pin from the same era all are welcome small additions to my already overstuffed show-bound van!
There's so much to see in this ultra-large mall, where most dealers are still keeping it real with vintage and antiques, and some that are beyond typical! Specialists in Hagen-Renaker figures, Fisher-Price play sets, Fenton art lines and Jadeite occupy entire showcases, and a really cool 'General store' offers old-school candy brands in a space decorated with tons of antique and vintage tins, kitchen implements, general store displays and a lot of fun and interesting gadgets to boot!
We talk about how to make money using one Franciscan dinnerware pattern as parts for another, appreciate the importance of portable thread cabinets and explain those very curious devices in the box...

My mother had a pram in a clear plastic box on the roof overhang to show when she was a licensed babysitter and daycare.
Oh that's clever!
Love that!!👍
What a CUTE idea!!!
My dad said use a soap bar to loosen drawers. He was a cabinet maker in Europe and here. We found a nice stanley no 1 plane in our celler. Sold for a thousand dollars
Frank L Baum wrote the OZ books. He was just a kid that wanted to run away and join the circus, but his parents turned him into an accountant. His first job was in a sundries store. He was the first person to use display as a way to sell items. He used pots and pans to make the Tin Man in the front window. Dishes became Chinatown. Baum even wrote a book about the uses of display in the retail store.
Baum got married and had kids. They would come to the office, he had become the accountant for the department store by then, where he would tell them stories. The Land of OZ was based on the color wheel, yellow Munchkins, blue Meanies and red, hell I'm old and can't remember.
Emerald City office furniture company made the furniture in his office. The logo was a frond of Emerald Palm. OZ was the files O through Z.
Eventually, he was encouraged to write the books. Hollywood did use some liberties in the making. Dorothy's shoes were silver, but because most of the movie was shot in b and w and only the dreams were in color, the shoes became Ruby Glass.
That is fascinating! I had heard he wanted a showman's life but was hamstrung...but that expressed itself in a pretty cool and different way! I didn't know that he set up window displays that made him think of the characters. The primary colors seemed like a good idea with kids, easy to keep track of who's who. Emerald City!-What an interesting notion. I wonder where they were based. Hollywood took a fair number of liberties, specifically that it was "only a dream" in the movie where the books went on for 40 more titles...I imagine nowadays that would mean 40 sequels, and Liza Minelli would be playing Ozma by now.

The reds were Winkies. Cognitive moments are getting fewer and far between now.
@@danielclaeys7598 So sorry, but sounds like you have been blessed with a lot to remember. Thank you for the lesson.
Baum's mother in law Matilda Joslyn
Gage, a well known suffragist, encouraged him to write the books. Gage is not as well known as the suffragists Anthony and Stanton because they didn't agree with all her views so they kind of cut her out of the narrative of the history of the movement in their writings.
Good evening everyone 🦩🌴🌞
Dear George,

Great Video George!❤
Thanks! 😀
Love that you show different things and their prices. Thanks.
Thanks! I don't always show price, sometimes it's more about the story but I try to do some of both
Imagine my surprise while watching old The Dead Files episodes and all of a sudden I hear an unmistakable voice and its you! Talking to Steve and giving your expertise about history...pretty cool George!!!!
Mmmmm Twin Bing candy bars are so yummy! I would have bought one too! Haven't had one in years.
Hello from Beach Park Ilinois
Wow wild george that mall was excellent❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
We definitely had those saucer sleds. I also had to look up why not to eat cotton seeds. Lol. Ectrastan. Hahahaha.
I love a well organized antique mall that plays golden oldies on a nice sound system!
I have never see those colored glass cats! I love them especially the blue one!
Love pink kitchenware! Great photo of u in thumbnail. U look so happy! Best wishes in all u do.
😊 it was so wonderful to meet you finally in Centralia this past weekend! Eva and Denise. Thanks!
I have shopped here many times!
My brother lived in Omaha about a decade ago. His favorite source for incredible vintage buys was called New Life Thrift. I dont remember the location but i do remember that it was an incredible place for mid-century modern furniture.....he foundca set of four Eames fibreglass shell armchairs and a Paul McCobb for Irwin room divider there. Might be worth a trip!
Ooh that sounds like my next stop in Omaha!
Great video! Now, I miss my Fisher-Price farmhouse from my childhood.
Aww...well, you might get another chance!
I love Westmoreland glass. I have quite a bit of it but that red was AWESOME.
Red is a good color for them!
Oh, I so agree on turning things. No money in keeping things for years!! I have a German Symphonion, similar to that music box, from the estate I'm helping with. Hoping to sell it locally, I just can't ship it, heavy. Thanks for another great video.
I love your video's George, thank you ❤
My grandad was a school custodian, and when I went to "help" him check the school property in Saturdays, we always split a Coke from that very Coke machine. It was in the teacher's lounge--forbidden territory!
Karen .. That’s a beautiful memory! 🙏🏻
You brought back memories I used to shop there all the time my late husband
👋 😊
I LOVE TWIN BINGS!!
Great George video to Share with a friend ! Pass it on 😊
15:29 ooh! I can’t tell-do you remember how much that Casper game was? So cool!
$24?
Turn and burn is where it's at! I hoard eilat jewelry and tend to hold onto precious metals if they were bought well under melt. (taxation-resistant savings account until you cash it out.) Besides, if you hold onto an antique, it might go out of style next week and be worth half of what you paid. (or twice what you paid sometimes, but them's the breaks.)
George: What you called a “double book stand” was, I believe, for reading large open volumes or ledgers. At the Wisconsin Historical Society I saw them used for reading large bound newspaper volumes.
I like the red deco bowl it was beautiful ❤
I would like to see more McCoy cookie jars
Omg George, had I known you were in Omaha I would have come to greet you! You are amazing, love your videos and expertise!!
I wish I could shop with you every day! I loved seeing all of these pieces!❤
Fun video George! I would love to visit a Brass Armadillo! Thanks for sharing
“Ect.astan” hahaha. Good video, as always.
This is your viewer AND subscriber in Texas who continues to attempt to upgrade my membership but can’t seem to make it work! Yes, it’s me, Judith Derington-McConnell! The one who ferrets out all your old uploads and watches when there’s no current videos available to watch. This music is a bit overwhelming but I’m sticking with it. Here you are! Yea!! I’m sure I’ll have a comment on an item or two from this Megamall before this video is over. Good to see you back on RUclips, I develop a bit of anxiety if you go too long between appearances. Judy ❤🎉❤
Hi there! I am so glad to have you with us. We're here every M/W at 8 pm almost like clockwork (I missed one chat a few weeks ago)...I'm trying hard to catch up on membership stuff. Let me know what the issue you're having is and I will see if I can suggest anything
I’m not a novice when it comes to computers. I read to follow the directions on your home page that should lead to upgrading me from level one to two. BUT IF I WAS SUCCESSFUL, WE WOULDN’T BE HAVING THIS CONVERSATION!
Really enjoy these tours of these antique shops!
Been looking for the uranium glass truck tire ashtray forever! LOVE the funeral car topper! The plique a jour is just gorgeous! And I sure would love that double bookstand for my library. It would go so great with my late 1800s NYC schoolmaster's lecture podium, my barristers and my two book presses. Jacks with shelves in a garage? In NY they are high style in loft living spaces with glass tops! And with prices to match! No to the farm family cannisters. Scary! But I sure would love the cypress knees lamp! Lots of stuff I love here!
I really like the uranium glass truck ashtrays (and World's Fair ashtrays)...and I'd love to have a funeral car topper in an automobilia colleciton! It would indeed go with those items you mention, I have a funny story about a book press I'll have to tell you sometime.
About two weeks after I met my husband, he was sitting at a red light in his van and got slammed from behind. In the back of the van was a book press - a gift for me - which went through the windshield. He went to the hospital - he was okay - and the van was towed. The book press vanished. About a year ago I found one just like it. The second one I have is a bit newer. Would love to hear your bookpress story. I am a fan of Glen Cook - his paperbacks even in bad condition go for a lot. I have them all and my book press came in very handy to bring them back to life a bit. Look for his old paperbacks - the Garrett series ones. They are scarce and highly collectable. @@TheAntiqueNomad
Wow that is quite a story, very interesting@@persiphonehellecat
I really enjoyed this video. You have such a fantastic amount of knowledge.😊😊
Thanks!
Thank you so much, Jan! I'm glad to be able to bring you things from all over the country to see
How fun. Every single time I watch your videos I find some more lovely things I don't think I can live without! This time it was the Fostoria Azure Pitcher, and the Hawkes bowl. The pitcher goes for an arm and a leg! Thank you George :)
George, I live in Omaha, Nebraska and I was watching this video and at time stamp 27:13 I bought the white cabinet next to the green door. I took a pic of it on my TV, Brass Armadillo found it in the store and I went and picked it up! Had to tell you. ❤ it. ❤ your vids!
10:24 Muskota Weller line. A favorite! I saw a cloisonné bowl at a shop in Centralia that was like plique a jour but without the clear glass. Some colored enamel creating a pattern and then the rest was empty wire. I meant to ask you about it…
Thank you, Muskota! Good i.d.
@@TheAntiqueNomad very beautiful stuff in that line. Someday…
Fantastic place🥰
What a nice collection of unusual and interesting pieces. An excellent shopping experience. Thanks George ❤
You were showing a blue bird of happiness, I have one signed by Leo Ward from 1993 and just by accident I found it glows green under black light. I knew the amberina cardinals did as well as the golden canary's glow orange but never knew blue glass as well. I also have a LE Smith blue ashtray that glows green. I'm sure you knew this but I've never heard anyone mention it before.
Our flying saucers (name we used)🛸 were made out of metal great fun and very fast. 🙂
When i was nine i was sledding and was struck from behind by a husky boy on a saucer.....shattered my right ankle into 23 pieces and broke my lower leg into a splintered mess.....I live with the pain of it everyday. Im glad to know that they were later banned for being a dangerous, unsafe toy.
i would kill for the fenton,we dont have much of it where i live ,or they want an arm and a leg ,i just brought a lamp it is so lovely and the guy gave it to me for a bit less ,he is such a lovely man and did not try to rip me off,i also got some tupper ware from him to,my son drove me out to him and he got some tupper ware,he loves the colur orange green ect ,i have passed something on to him wow,he is 33 and luived with his grandad untill feb, when pop left this world he was 101 and still lived at home so now my son lives there by himself.i love watching u .
I noticed you had Twin Bing in your cart. Growing up in Nebraska , Bing was one of my favorite candies (Cherry Mash is similar, only too sweet!), but not available everywhere. Whenever my brother comes back from Arizona, he takes home Bing and Runzas (they make and freeze them for travelers).
Thank you George. You take us to such interesting places.
Great video George! Thanks for sharing!
❤😊
❤
Hope you enjoyed Nebraska!
The Nuns! The Have Gun will Travel lunchbox. Just a wonderful wonderland 🙌🏻I got my son the Firestone ashtray for his birthday.
I like all those! The Firestone ashtray is cool
Congrats on 50k!!
The one in the Des Moines Iowa area is great
I really hope we can one day make more products in the United States
Hey George! Didn't know if I'd make it or not. We've had severe storms, and we've lost electricity twice already. That Mosser Jadeite might not be old, but it is very good glass. I have two of their Northwood molds water sets, and I display them right alongside the Northwood, Imperial, Dugan, etc.. I appreciate Mosser for keeping the old makers' patterns "alive", and they take care their pieces can't be confused with the originals. I really liked those thread cases. Old sewing items, for some reason, really interest me. That green Victorian cordial set is my kind of thing. Fits right in with my interest in beverage sets of all sorts. That Fenton "Heavy Iris" tankard set was pretty, but I'd much prefer an original Dugan set. That's one of three sets I don't have that I'd really like to have. That would be a really nice place to browse and shop! Thanks for the take-along!
I couldn't keep a signal to chat, just made it through myself! I agree Mosser is good, just kind of heavy for my tastes in more modern production. They do very well with larger pieces in my opinion, and the beverage sets make much more sense in the heavy glass than do the butter dishes and things that look more contemporary. I have utmost respect for them not doing exact reproductions of anything! I would prefer the original Dugan to the Fenton set too, but I liked that Victorian set enough to (almost) pull the trigger. I'm glad you got to come along! Stay safe in the T-storms
Oh yes, I adore old sewing items too!❤. I actually purchased a counter top piece which is full of treadle machine needles in wooden cases, the bobbins for different make treadle machines. They are encase in metal with the sizes and it spins. This is attached to tiger oak square base. Had been painted, but have never gotten around to refinishing the wood part. Has sewing needles too. I have a tiny chain link purse my mom got while in the antique business. Happens to be part of a chatalain a seamtress would have worn on a chain that included other sewing items!❤. Glad to find someone with my obsession!😂😂😂
@@TheAntiqueNomad We aren't supposed to have storms today, but they are supposed to start again tomorrow...through the rest of the week. Losing electricity makes it difficult to keep mom's oxygen going 😖 Yes, Mosser glass is quite heavy. The pitchers I have are super-heavy. I have a "Cherry and Cable" and a "Cherry and Lattice" set, and they are both very substantial, in the amount of glass used to make them. They iridise the bottoms of their Carnival Glass, and the old makers didn't do that, so they do take care that their pieces can't be confused with the originals. The iridescence they use reminds me of those large marbles you find in craft and aquarium shops, but it is brilliantly colourful. That Victorian cordial set, and just the fact it was all still together, was a nice find. I'm not sure I could've resisted that one. That mall had some really interesting items.
@@joycleckley2881 Old sewing items have always fascinated me. With me being an artist, I consider sewing an artform, and so much of it has been taken over by mechanical means. That has taken the art and character out of what people worked and put into the art of sewing. My maternal grandmother and mom did a lot of needle work, and they used to make most of their clothes. I used to have several old sewing items, but when I moved here to take care of mom, after dad died, both of us had to drastically thin out our collections, so I had to sell them. I had a 5,000 sq. ft. house, and this house is half that size, so combining mom's and my collections required some major thinning. There are some things I wish neither of us would've had to sell, but I don't regret moving here to take care of mom, at all, so the "things" definitely took a far back seat to that.
I hope you are safe from all the storms George. ❤️
If you come through NJ, let me know. I have a ton of vintage and antiques that I am looking to unload. Moving in the next few years and need to start downsizing.
Sorry I missed the chat again. I was in the ER tonight…. My sister is I’ll.😢
