Nirvana - Old Age [Kurt Solo Acoustic Demo]
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 20 окт 2024
- 'Old Age' Recorded sometime in 1992. A demo of a song Kurt would later 'give' to Courtney, due to his dissatisfaction with it. The song in the beginning seems to be an improvisation, followed by a short covered section of 'Low Rider'. Most of these have been converted from lossless audio .FLAC files.
The best demo Kurt ever did, imo
Agree
This or Do Re MI
I agree!
With the first part of Do Re Mi (Medley) and with "What More Can I Say?", absolutely YES
P.s. I Love your channel
True
it's all in the music man
It's all in the meat
+Kurt Cobain I'd like to hear what they have to say
Grunge Gopher milk it
mrninninnin I lived without listening to music willingly for a while, not sure why. I actually grew depressed at a time and eventually music got me on the first step outta depression. Music is super powerful. (I wasn't depressed enough to commit suicide, but still I was deeply depressed)
you're right. its hard to see how people were suprised when he killed himself.
This is how you write a song. You gather a few chords or a riff, then you mumble over it for FUCKING HOURS. Best way to formulate a melody. Then translate / rhyme your madness into coherence. Record EVERYTHING you do. X
that is the way our bands do :)
Couldn’t agree more. The key is to try and finish a song within a day or two of starting it. Took me a long time to learn that. Instead of 30 half songs you’ll have 15 finished ones.
god bless you
THIS
agree sm
He had probably more guitar skills than what he wanted to show to the world, and even though his songs are technically simple, his sense of melody is almost from outer space.
Miquel yeah. Anyone who thinks he was shit on guitar should check out the jam demo. He wasn’t Hendrix but that’s okay. Indeed his chord progressions were incredible.
Miquel he actually played simpler so that he could sing and play at the same time.
I think he was a great guitarist...the world is full of people who can play like Jimmy Page, Van Halen/whomever else...not to say those guys aren’t great, they are, but there’s more than one way to play guitar. Kurt was (I think) more into playing what was right for his songs instead of overly technical blues-based soloing...there’s enough of that out there anyway.
I’d also say he was great based on the influence he had. Thousands of kids were inspired to play bc of Cobain (me included). It was really cool to be able to play a passable version of his songs while you were just a beginner. 25 years, give or take, later & I still love playing his music.
Kurt said it himself in an interview...I’m gonna paraphrase bc I can’t remember verbatim, but it was something like “I can’t play like Segovia, but then again, he couldn’t play like me either.”
Most of the criticism I hear or read online is from jackasses who think it makes them look cool, or god knows what, to talk shit about Nirvana. I think it has a lot to do with their popularity...there’s always gonna be ppl who shit on everything popular to make themselves look hip. If Nirvana had recorded the exact same songs/albums as an indie band they’d consider him a genius. Ppl are fuckin’ weird.
I don't think so... I think that he did the greatest thing he could do with the knowledge he had bout guitar. Kurt maybe just had more creative ideas than guitar skill and he made great stuff in those 5 years.
Imagine if the next Nirvana album was full of songs like this...
would be perfekt
I was thinking the exact same thing! That improvisation that leads into it as well :O
DWIGHTTTTT I MISS YOU
it was going to be
nah it was gonna be hard rock and roll
Kurt was the coolest teenager that ever lived
Apart from you. You were fkin awesome.
Except for ME of course
His voice could be strong and angry but then fragile and weak. He was from outer space.

In other words, Kurt was just a little bitch. Ok XD

+TheSmashingTesticles fuck ya self
yeah, and sometimes, he does the crack in his voice and that makes me want to cry...:'(
Not Kurt.
1:10 - 2:17 is a totally different song. It’s unreal how amazing and hauntingly beautiful it is...
best part. And it doesnt appear on the electric version
exactly
What's it called
In fact what Cobain played at the beginning was an improvisation so he didn't play it again
I think it's definitely "credit in the straight world" of hole.
he gave her this,or she steal this.
Strange how a song with mostly incoherent lyrics can still hit pretty hard.
it's cause he got famous and then died in a tragic-seeming way....believing someone is special really changes how people interpret music when they hear it...Ive got some incredible music recorded but no one cares cause when they hear it it is music by the no-one goof who they know as me, even when I can tell theyre digging it I can also sense that something cuts them off from really appreciating it because they havent gotten the go-ahead cue from media and there is no mystery about me.
joe jones or your music is just trash lol 🤷🏻♂️😂😂 nah jokes haha

One of the best pieces of music I have ever heard. Kurt you fucking genius.
This song is awesome
+Roxanna RZ I second that
I love kurt and nirvana, but you have to be kidding me. This simple melody, and plain lyrics is not genius, it's a lazy but great sounding song. Genius is Beethoven writing and playing full sonatas while partially deaf.

Well put.
This man had more technical ability in singing than he ever let on. He *wanted* to look like he screamed unceremoniously, but performances like this tell us that he knew exactly what he was doing.

he really exparaments with his voice in this song, guitar too, it's like he was planning on expanding his variety. a lot of people say Kurt's music is simply and nothing special, but they are numbnuts, they can't think deep enough to see the true genius Kurt was, he really didn't show it much, but he was a very gifted and an amazing man. I Love the hell out of you Kurt RIP buddy, we all miss you! He is an idol of mine and I look at him as superior to human, he was such a great person and so modest. Just and amazing human and a such an unfathomably great loss not just to the music community but the world as a father, a person, an artist, a musician, a story teller and just so much more. I love you Kurt, Never forgotten and rest easy man.
Totally agree
I thought the same. Kurt's music can sound "normal" and "nothing's epic", but it gives me a strange feeling that I've never had before. I think Kurt was a very instinctive musican, he wrote what he truly thinks and feels at that time, you can see that most of his lyrics didn't make sense, (I think he didn't try to edit his lyrics at all), so what's he wrote is the truest feelings!
👍
You can say what you want, but I'm probably always gonna think nirvana was simple. Awesome, but simple. When people write songs, they should just do whatever they think. There's no other process I know of. He seemed to usually have stuck with power chords mostly, but the "melody" (I'm not good with terms, but I think that's the word?) was often great. That's what got them famous, the melody and tone. His voice was kinda unique, which also helped. I don't know what Kurt was like, but I do know what his music was like. He found the rhythm/melody/whatever and did it in the notes he wanted, and used that to go with what's on his mind. Just like every other musician. Some musicians go fast, and have epic solos. like Metallica, or Slayer. And others can stick with power chords, and maybe mix it up with extra notes and maybe a solo. Like Nirvana, or Green Day.
You got a point there!
I just so badly wish we could’ve heard the next album by him done acousticlly

Kurt was a songwriter out of the ordinary... Most pop songs, punk rock songs, etc are written using the same old chord progressions, like 1-4-5 for example, but look at Kurt's chord progressions and melodies, it is just on another level !
Take Lithium... That chord progression is really weird, but it works perfectly, and he was able to write some beautiful melodies on top of it all... He was a real genius !!!
Kurt live in out hearts. He is the hero of the music and never die
Yes
@@aneurysmgrungeband7449 but also no and definitely maybe.
Favorite version of the song. Whether he had the lyrics written at this point I don’t know, but I like to think of this as a window into his creative process, in the midst of sculpting the melody, before the lyrics have been fully formed. Like an artist’s sketchbook.

I actually like all these acoustic demos than I like their completely finished songs. Maybe because i have over listened to all their albums. I believe that these crude and unfinished songs should be called acoustic grunge. Damn, I really wish he could of finished his last album they were making. It would of been so grunge. :/
+Lukas Morkunas
They weren't making a new album. They were in the middle of their In Utero tour. The only new song they had was You Know Youre Right. One song does not make a new album.
+Arest One I think he was about to do his own solo project.
+Connor B and other great musicians of the nineties and so on.

+Connor B right on. They were just playing punk rock and trying to be intense and energetic. The grunge thing was definetely a stupid label to name all of that punk rock music from Seatlle.
I love his voice so much, it has so much emotion and everything
Did Nirvana made my depression worse. Or did my depression made me listen to nirvana. Either way I love you Kurt!!
Nirvana more then likely made it worse added more things to the mind to slowly worry about.
It didn't get worse, it is just giving you directions to the end of the tunnel.
that's interesting, my perspective was different, I was suicidal and I wouldn't say depressed so much as hopeless
Nirvana is like an older brother, I felt like my pain was felt by others, and thus, that I was not really alone
Whenever I would see people rep nirvana logos, I kind of had hope that the world was full of people like me
I no longer cling to that naive view, but I've also outgrown the sort of narcissism of depression
Jonny Garcia kurt put an odd color to our depression
funny question, maybe I would say Sunny Jim that the colour was a nice one, and I agree with Que. I just think that the sounds of his voice are beautiful but I don't know if he made me more sad. For me its just real art and life is sad but its like the music is sad but still is really great, but its more than sad its a whole mix of emotions.
I just discovered Nirvana on quarantine. I really regret so much to not knowing them before. I had a very strong connection with them, with their songs and lyrics, with all of the Kurt's screamings
It makes me sad that such a talented man had to leave us so soon, he changed the music and the world, and he was just beginning. How Kurt would imagine that 20 years later we will still love him and listening to his songs.
We miss you Kurt, come as you are

That falsetto at 0:32 is heartbreaking. To imagine him recording songs like that in the studio...
The Yodel song has this same riff, I see how kurt made his music now. He plays random stuff and puts it all together. Pure art.
You being sarcastic?
+jack craig the ending on the yodel song sounds like the his riff kinda
+KOSCade Art is achieved through discarding poor content and recycling the good. You don't pick up a guitar and create a finished product on attempt #1. He didn't release yodel song, if he was alive today you wouldn't have heard it or known it existed. Ridding the rubbish and collecting and assembling the gems is the artistic process, and leads the art to its peak - which, in Cobain's opinion, were the albums he chose to release. He wasn't even happy with the final recording of "old age".
Literally, I am only an amature songwriter.. It is so relieving to know that this is how others do it. I'll write a chorus and will leave it for like a month, then have verse and add them together etc Once had a riff circling in my head for two weeks before adding lyrics.
+Daniel that's what I was getting at in my comment. He takes stuff he's made up, and uses what he's played to make something bigger. Basically recycling parts.

P.S. I had originally wrote this down years ago (Damn, time is slick). Paper and pencil is still neat, except for when you lose that single transcript. Although, deciphering these lyrics again helps get reacquainted, as a positive. This Cobain song (performance/composition/musica), for me, is easily one of his "deeper" and more thought-provoking and haunting. As a fan of Nirvana, it's hard to not think of this song as we all grow older with age.
Tbh it looked like a copy paste but whatever.
I posted this from desktop, formatting to hopefully make it easier to read and/or sing along while playing an instrument. It's just a big wall of text when I look at it from mobile unfortunately. Sorry. I'm guessing that's why it looks like a copy & paste?

Beautiful... Just beautiful
I think these demo ideas are just fantastic! I love the first little bit he did before tuning. But the song he was working on before old age starts I think would be an epic idea for him to combine that with old age just as is on this demo. Like he does that verse and transitions into old age like he did. I dont know if that was what he was actually doing but if he was that was pure genius
This is the best song he wrote, makes me cry everytime I listen to it
my favorite piece of recording in all of acoustic history. the song after tuning is so beautiful angels descend on pedals of flowers and the winded vocals float words, to which i refrain.
This is one of the best things I’ve ever heard in my life
This is THE best thing I've ever head in my life
i wish this was on spotify
This is the most valuable recording of Kurt in my opinion. It gives us a glimpse into his brilliant creative process like nothing else. Not to mention the absolutely incredibly haunting beauty of this piece. Masterwork and masterclass all in one. Rest easy Kurt- hope to see you very soon.
this have an unic vibe of agony, melancholy, desappointment and sadness. definitely the best demo
I always thought from 1:15 to 2:10 sounded awesome. I wish Kurt had made a full version of this.
His sense of melody was so beyond anyone else I've ever heard. And then you combine that with a voice that is somehow strong, honest, and vulnerable all at the same time. I don't understand most of the lyrics, but it feels like what's being conveyed here is a brutal yet beautiful truth. It brings me to tears.
This is like getting a look inside Kurt's creative mind. So real.
This is my favorite song you wrote, it was mostly unfinished but I can hear the emotion pouring out of this track.. thought it proper ro come on here and say Happy Birthday buddy! We all miss you so much!
I put this on repeat when I first heard it. That's 11 years ago.
I recently was recommended this song on youtube and probably listened to it 3 times back to back. This simply blew me away. It is so different than his album recordings. I loved every second of it. I have been looking for other hidden gems such as this and I found “sappy”. Sappy is also a great song
I am 15 years old but i love iz
What I love about this demo is you hear him flesh out a pretty much finished song in about 2 minutes. Just starts mumbling and sketching and booom there is an arrangement with a clear melodic structure.
This is beautiful. I'm pretty surprised it wasn't used.
Probably cause it's ass
I wish i could just sit in a room with him and watch his writing process
one of my favorite tracks
any rhythm guitarist knows what it's like
to strum away at your guitar, chasing melody, making songs, channeling music
Incredible style and vibe
i just wanna cry
Synesthesist a beautiful girl like u shouldnt cry.
Leo 159 dude wtf
I detect a whiteknight.
Find a shoulder
i always do,but try and comfort myself by telling me that hes now god, lol.
1:28 This moment gave me chills
And it also sucked at the same time. Absolutely incredible.
i sat sad listening to this and then at the end when started to sing that low rider song i just smiled and my heart stopped hurting for a couple of seconds
2:18. That transition gives me chills everytime
So soothing and so distressing at the same time
Honestly one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, I can't stop listening to it.
This guy could basically create memorizing melodies at will... Such a gift he was given.
Kurt was still writting "Old Age" for 4th Album of Nirvana
Best version of "Old Age". Unique, genius and working it out.
Kurt: 1:33
Somewhere inside of me: [twitches and starts crying]
I love how he sings low rider at the end
Listening this song during cold, rainy night while drinking some hot tea was the best feeling ever
😌😎
Yeah, sure, well... morphine could work too, just saying :-)
found it now, in 2023, and it's incredible
Congrats
It’s because of Kurt that I am who I am today. A generally more creative, les ignorant person. His style of writing and the way his songs sound never fail to help me and please me. His songs mean so much to me and just the general vibe helps my mood every single time. Kurt, you can’t see this but thank you so damn much and you will be a part of me for the rest of my life no matter what.
this is so beautifull.. We all mis you kurt :c.
I listen to this version more than the finished version
that guy was a genius! Yesterday, today, and tomorrow, he put spirits on his music to make people aware about what 's around. Because of Nirvana I started to questionne myself about the school, then i did it all the time everywhere. Just an magik Anarkist!
the best, sadness, kurt, we miss you hey hey
