fantastic review!....i attached this beast to my flak jacket while in Iraq in 2003....it survived 42 straight days of combat, sandstorms, and not to mention the sheer size of this monster intimidated wannabe terrorists back into their mud huts..i still have it over 7 years later and its still has the orginal edge...so yeah, deployment knife? Absolutely!
Brought this blade along on a 3 day backpacking trip up the North Fork of the American River. It hacked through 3/4" branches with one pass easily! Mine however did not come very sharp, but the steel sharpens with ease.
Jason Voorhees eat your heart out. Wicked looking survival knife. If I was in a survival situation this is the type of blade I want on my side. Great review!
That FQB is a good point. Not to mention a deterrence factor of a knife this big. It could also help avoid or stop an upcoming fight in sort of a "is that a knife? Thats a knife" fashion.
Thank you for your videos, really helped me decide on a very good knife. I got the SP5 and it rocks, i have taken it on all sorts of camp outs and its performance is incredible.
i'm impressed with this knife, thanx 2 this review...somewhere around 40-50 bucks and u get a 10 inch bladed knife!!! wow,now that rocks...and not only that but 1 that is actually reliable knowing that it is made by Ontario...i'm completely sold 4 this knife until i review the rest of the knives u did reviews on...keep it rockin nutn
Aw right!! I've got this knife, love it. Got it at a gun show; sold a Glock field knife and a Cold Steel machete and bought this bad beauty. Pleased to see it's got the Nut'n seal of approval.
What an awesome knife!!! The only difference between a custom knife is the fit and finish. The functionality remains the same. I can't say enough great things about my SP5... Once again Nutn, helped me pick out a great piece of gear!!! Thanks so much for getting this good info out there!!! BTW I was backpacking with an eagle scout. He couldn't get a fire going in the damp conditions... I showed him the Nutnfancy way, and sure enough.... success! Thanks for all you do bro!
hello veri, got the knives in on friday march 18th. super fast shipping from the ontario knife store. just a very long wait for backordered items. am happy with the knives and the prices. thanks again to you and nutn' for all your hard work!
I have had my SP5 since the early 90's. It's been with me around the world and back (US Army). It has a few scars from those "trips", I guess I have some of those as well. Keeps an edge very well. When the finish got too thin and reflective(10 or so years) I re-coated it. Money went spent, is an understatement. You most definitely don't have to have the newest/most expensive/highest rated items out there. Good training and common sense trumps all that, in real world situations.
pcolvario, he must have showed the part on the blade that said "Ontario USA" several times. Ontario is a military knife supplier that also sells knives to civilians. All their Spec Plus stuff like this is made in the USA (as stamped on the blade!).
hello veri, i called ontario knife store this am and got very good customer service. unfortunately 2 of the knives i ordered are on backorder and the entire order is delayed till mid march. not a big deal. i just wanted to know what was going on and now i do. i guess someone on the web side dropped the ball in responding to my emails. thank you for your response as well. a big thanks to NUTN' and you for all the hard work you do. i really enjoy his vids and life POU.
Now I have one more knife to add to my wish list. The Ontario SP10 and Marine Raider both have caught my eye and are in the running against each other. Now the SP5 has joined the race. I think out of the three the SP5 might fit more overall roles and duties between Survival and combat knife. I might be wrong!?!
nutnfancy, thanks for making great videos. I picked up my SP 5 at a gun show used for $20 bucks, The idiot used a camp axe to peen wood by hitting the top of the blade. I gave it a couple of swipes with my files and put the square edge back on the top. Being able to sharpen in the field is everything to me. You can toss this at Racoons in the middle of the night at the campground and this knife is pretty hard to bust up. This knife is perfect in swampy wet coastal areas and for beach combing. This knife is so light its perfect for long hikes. I carry mine on the side of my MED alice pack.
I have this knife. Had ot for about 15 years or so. I've done a lot, a LOT, with it. I call it my "snake chopper". But recently I broke it. I was simply lopping small branches off of a limb. I took about a quarter size chunk right out of the middle of the blade. VERY disappointed! I ground it down and made a very Mad Max looking beast thing out of it and now I'm on the lookout for a new better bush knife. I discovered the steel is so-so quality 53-59 HRC...nothin' to scream about. So ...there ya go...take it for what you will.
Hey man saw your review on the SP5....I have have Mine for 10 years and have used it for 2 Moose hunts in Vermont it rocks and I payed 65.00 for it....Used it like most people would a hatchet...
@hoodrat61 Have you tried calling them to press the issue? Its only been two weeks since your initial order, but you might be able to get a tracking number or some info about what's going on. -- Veri
Please respond. Which is better for the money? The Large Heavy Bowie by Ka-Bar, or, the SP 5? I like the both of them and they are around the same price. I just need user advice. Thanks.
Hi. I watched a video where the Kabar large heavy bovies handle got loose. Do you guys think it would be better to get full tang knife for battoning? I was thinking about the Schrade SCHF9. It looks awesome and has a full tang blade and it looks tough as hell. Or do you guys recommend something over the Schrade at the same price range? Thank you for your answers!
@Southern661 - you're talking much more about a sword fight here I think - in which case, yeah size definitely counts - but in knife fighting the purpose is to physically get hold of whoever you're actually fighting and stab or slice open their throat (wide blades are good). You may think this would be difficult to do when someone has a machete type blade but their are several martial arts focussed on disarming people carrying large blades. Difficult to disarm someone of a small(ish) knife.
45$ for that knife is very cheap man! I´d like to see it in the boonies doing some chopping and batoning! Too bad I got some other priority knives in my list now! Great review Nutn! As always!
According to your Info this is an overseas made knife, which I think is incorrect. It is made in the USA? I think people might be mis-led by that comment.
Have used this same knife for years. The blade is easy to sharpen and it just keeps on going. Not real fond of the handle but what the hell for the price U cannot go wrong..
is anyone else having problems with ontario-knife-store? i ordered and paid for 3 knives on 2-4-11 and have not got them yet. i emailed 2 times asking about the order but was not answered by them. i guess i'll give it a little more time then try to get my money back if they dont sent my order.
hey dude, cool videos. I'm a trained knife fighter - and by that I don't mean I'm some sort of ninja, I just mean I've been trained to do it a fair bit - basically long blades don't really help - can totally see where you coming from - but length wouldn't much come into it for something the size you'd call a survival knife. Swords - yeah reach is important - knives - no - so long as it's long enough to get into someone body deep enough to do some real fast acting damage - you'll be stabbing them
Hmm it looks as though that knife has a fully sharpened swedge... not so sure this will lend itself to being a very good knife for batoning. =/ I would have liked to see Nutn make some reference to this to see what his thoughts on it having a real sharpened swedge would have been.

"Lets go on a journey"
Its 2014 and we've definitely gone on a journey. Thanks for the ride!
Thank you for your videos, really helped me decide on a very good knife. I got the SP5 and it rocks, i have taken it on all sorts of camp outs and its performance is incredible.

glad I added you nutnfancy..... you got good taste in weapons

awsome knife man
Please respond.

Thanks.
I can't decide between the Sp5 and the Kabar Heavy Bowie... choices..
So which one should i get the SP5 or the SP10?
I got both of the knives sp5 and sp10 they are both totally worth the Moneyy
hey nutnfancy, what do you like better the ontario sp10 or the kabar large heavy bowie?
I would really like to see if Mercworx knives are any good

This looks like a great inexpensive knife. Why does the Ontario Rat-7 cost twice as much?
Which do you prefer,the SP-5 or SP45?
According to your Info this is an overseas made knife, which I think is incorrect. It is made in the USA? I think people might be mis-led by that comment.
@pcolvario i thought it was made in Canada?
CQB = Close Quarter Bombat?
:)
Yeah I am a 10-inch blade fan.
@GCreble10 6 to one half a dozen to the other, but i really love the Heavy bowies handle.
Have used this same knife for years. The blade is easy to sharpen and it just keeps on going. Not real fond of the handle but what the hell for the price U cannot go wrong..
That things like a machete! Oh ya, I know you have your own things to do but it would be great if you could compare the sp5 to the sp10
@nutnfancy veri, why do you answer your brother's comments?
That's a good knife for the price.
5/5
i thought it was 1095. small difference though.
is anyone else having problems with ontario-knife-store? i ordered and paid for 3 knives on 2-4-11 and have not got them yet. i emailed 2 times asking about the order but was not answered by them. i guess i'll give it a little more time then try to get my money back if they dont sent my order.
im assuming you meant cqc

I prefer a small knife for gutting and skinning deer and a small axe for wood chopping.
Why do you always say I or what does that mean
Hmm it looks as though that knife has a fully sharpened swedge... not so sure this will lend itself to being a very good knife for batoning. =/ I would have liked to see Nutn make some reference to this to see what his thoughts on it having a real sharpened swedge would have been.
@varun009 I think it's because he doesn't have the time
not if the other dude got a gun lol
@hogielove my gun will scare them more ; ) thats why I carry one instead of a ontario sp5
too darn heavy for a 3.5inch blade though!
@Jurkowski1987
sp10
