  • Much more than just an axe review, you might find this video incorporates the heart and soul TNP Wilderness experience. This frames a fascinating discussion of these Swedish Axes and Hatchets. I have found none better.
Just as good as the Gransfors Brux are the Hults Bruk Swedish axes, highly recommend: shrsl.com/2g9ic

I have the GBSFA strapped to the side of my BOB and the reason is country specific, where I live handguns are banned, I was force to hand over my firearms when the law changed. So beyond a tool I regard it as a weapon for survival.
As an FYI for our American cousins i handed over £5000 worth of pistols and received £572.24 as my lawful compensation, NO choice as it was illegal to keep them, hand em over pissoff and here is a tenth of there value. Yes still bitter about it. Totally off topic but get off your arses and go protect your rights before you get shafted literally.
Thank you for all the time effort and money you put into these videos. Take care and God Bless.

So I've been a TNPer since probably 2009 and have built my systems around Nutn's recommendations. With many adventures under my belt I have found almost without exception that his systems are on point. However, I had an experience this last Oct/Nov in the North Cascade National Park which proved an axe/hatchet was the only tool for the job. My father who has been a woodsman for over 40yrs and only carries a hatchet with him schooled me in extremely wet and rainy conditions in the PNW. I had with me a medium size blade (SP46) and the sawvivor which is what I almost always carry because of the capability the 2 provide together. Well we needed to set camp and get a fire built as it was getting dark and the rain was pouring. I set out to find a standing snag of some kind, because when it's standing it's usually dryer, and had intended to use the saw to cut it down, cut it up, and then baton it into burnable pieces... Just like I have done multiple times before. BUT, there was no standing wood and all the down stuff had been rained on for days and was worthless to build a fire with. Since darkness was upon us hiking around until we found something that would suffice wasn't an option. That when my father stepped in and said, "let me teach you something." He then proceeded to take his hatchet and strip the bark from the dry underside of a Douglas Fir. Little did I know that in wet environments Doug Fir is the predominant species and that the bark expands and can be burnt like actual wood. His hatchet made quick work of the bark (my system wouldn't do what was required because of the smaller blade) and within minutes we had a fire going. Mind blown. Moral of my long winded story is that your tools need to be appropriate for your environment, and that in a very wet almost rain forest type of ecosystem, having a hatchet saved us that night. If it hadn't been for my fathers cheap Estwing that he's carried for the last 40+ yrs, it would have been a very cold and wet night. I tip my hat to you pops, thanks for the education. And for all you other TNPers, know your environment and what tools work best there, or you may just find yourself bringing a knife to a gun fight. P.S. I went and bought myself the exact Estwing that my father has carried forever the next day when we got out of the backcountry. Not going to get caught with my pants down again.

After what feels like ages, I feel like nutn is rediscovering the channels first grand adventure, the base camp multiple day outdoor adventure. I remember coming upon this channel and before I watched the gun reviews or krvs or motorbike runs or politics, the channel for me was all about how to make yourself part of the ecosystem and get intimate with the mountain.
Really happy with the last few vids nutn.

To split as a real Swede with a small ax, you first swing the ax so it get stuck on the top of the lumber. Then you lift the ax with the lumber attached and smash it down on the ground. Lumber splitting Viking style.

I just want to thank you for this vid. I've always grown up with a love of the outdoors. I was a scoutmaster for several years, solo backpacker, and grew into woodsmanship. Purchased a Gransfors Bruks small forest ax a few years ago. It is always in my hunting pack - the pack that is with me on most of my hunting and outdoor ventures. It is a great ax. Sharp and easy to maintain. Does the work of larger axes and work that knives cannot. Always have a good knife (maybe a few) and a good ax when venturing into the woods.
Nutnfancy is fun to watch......if not just a weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee bit longwinded. Never say with two words when a half hour video can be posted.
May Nutfancy be here for our enjoyment for a long time! Nutnfancy's dog makes me want to replace my beloved Golden Retriever that died a couple years ago. Dogs are even better than axes.

One little tip about cross cuts, the width of the cut should start out at about 3 times the width of the log. Big long chips result (kindling) and cuts/chops closer to 45 degrees will be much deeper and require less energy.
Still, even with improved technique, a saw will always be a better tool for cross cuts.

  • @HorizonsleatherBlogspot2012
    @HorizonsleatherBlogspot2012 9 лет назад +2

Old time woodsman would pack their axe heads and craft their handles once they arrived at location. It's one option to consider. Also, if rust is an issue, you could soak the axe in vinegar (or use other methods) to create a forced patina which will help protect the steel. It's always important to practice safe chopping and splitting techniques, too. The axe is a wonderful tool if used properly and far exceeds the workload of any knife. With an axe, you can work smarter, not harder. For larger cross cuts, a folding buck saw (you can even make your own) is a valuable asset, saving you energy and time. To clean your tools you could use sand and water, then oil, or if you have salt handy you could rub it down and rinse it off before oiling. This also works great with cast iron cookware. Best of luck!

I've been very happy with mine, You can't go wrong with any of them. I got the large hunters Wetterlings and I love this Axe. Solid great quality. I have used it on a few camping trips to split firewood and once made a spatula for pancakes. Used the butt often to knock pine knots out of old dead pine trees for starting fires. I have even used it as the bow in my bow drill system to start a fire. Great tool just not going to be able to chop down 30 inch trees with it. 5-6 inches all day and small camp chores works great. I have also made tripods and hangers for cooking over the camp fire.

I'm not a fan of those big knives at all. I just don't see the point of struggling and batoning with a knife when there's a much better tool for the job. Give me a Spyderco Tenacious or a Benchmade Griptillian for regular knife duties and I'll take a fricking hatchet or hunter's axe (as you show in the video). It just makes sense.

I love seeing Allie out there with you. It always brings a smile to my face. My girl Birdie loves going on hikes and in a couple weeks I'm taking her out on a two night back packing trek ;-) She will get to use her Christmas present doggie back pack and carry her own food and treats. I worry a little that she might get cold and I wondered if you ever outfit Allie with booties or extra layers. Great vid as always. You continue to be an inspiration. Thank you!!!

Great to see that your giving love to the Swedish axe. I'm partial to Wetterlings myself, mostly due to their philosophy and value. Heck, I even went to one of their annual axe days and toured the forge and bought a couple of axes on site. One of the axes always rides in the jeep on moose and deer hunts and the other always comes on camping trips. I swear by the quality and workmanship. And yes, they have a 20yr guarantee as well. Greetings from snowy Sweden btw!

I went to Gransfors to get mine. Seeing the smiths work is like watching a ballet. They have to stay in the rhythm of the forge. Every time the forge comes down they move the piece to a different position. It's just awesome.

It’s nice to see you doing the wilderness camping, love being out of the people world also. I see you doing the hiking out there, good for you. My knees have given up on me, so I do the ATV touring. Doing it that way I don’t worry very much about the weight. I load up and my throttle thumb never gets tired.

I love my axe for any outing, I used a wetterlings large hunters axe in the Colorado backcountry for over a month and found it to be a great asset in winter camping. Now I have a Gransfors and the quality blows wetterlings out of the water. To maintain the edge I use a flex strop and a DC4 stone, I keep it like a razor and it likes to stay that way. Along with my Fallkniven A1 and my Northwest woodsmans buck saw I can build civilization or just a great campfire......happy trails.

Agreed, the Gransfords are great. I own two, a small I use for kindling and a bigger one that's good all around. Very special tools. Well worth the money. They keep a really edge for a while too! Would make an incredible gift for any guy that's into the outdoors.

The Small Forest Axe is the axe my father likes to pack whenever he goes into the forest on foot or with the snowmobile/ATV. It's been with him for a long long time and it works great!

    Superb Video Nut'n.
I have the Gransfors Bruk small forest axe for all-around use and the Hans Karlsson New Sloyd (H-166) for woodworking.
You can choke up behind the edge on the Sloyd which improves control for carving, it is amazing at about 24.5 oz.

Good review, and I understand you have some experience with these tools, but for your own safety you may consider taking a knee when chopping with shorter axes. Incase you miss the target, you don't want to end up with a axe in the shin

Really awesome intro and outro nutn. Gransfors bruks makes some of the best current production axes on the market and imho are top value for the price point. You buy one and if you care for it you've got a heritage tool thatll last life times. Need mo' back packing btw!!

  • @afleetcommand

Good video, I enjoyed the intro as well..... because it's not just about stuff. It's about relationships in this case with the mountain dog. Great topic btw. I pretty much agree. Would add one other brand to the mix as those you brought to the table aren't as accessible to the type of folks who actually USE those tools... like me for example. I can't go down to a store around here and find those. SO add Husqvarna, the chainsaw folks. They also sell higher quality hatchets and axes. Forged and look remarkably like one of those brands you have there. I use their dedicated splitting maul a lot and I can go to several stores in the area and actually buy them. Oh yea, I carry a Husqvarna brand hatchet when I'm in the woods logging as well for things like driving wedges in, cutting a pinched saw out etc. And carrying a 372 all day is a PITA so weight is an issue so what ever comes along has to have a purpose and needs to as light as possible. If one of those brands was around here, I would certainly consider them! But what I do have is probably made by one of those to anyway and is in the local stores.. :) Something to consider. Also..... can't see carrying a large knife for logging ops... wouldn't work well with wedges. Different worlds. Similar requirements.

I know others have mentioned the channel but +wranglerstar has some great vids on more axes and even use and maintaining them as well as sharpening them, great channel on old world tools and the homesteading things. A great complement to this review.
Also, the Huskvarna axes are very affordable and use swedish steel.for those on a budget.
