My immediate thought is setting this up at work to show network status. Green good, yellow congested, red for wan down, maybe blue for on redundant connection... Could be neat!
Take a Look at the wled project. If you want to "hack" some more lights with programable leds. I use it for all of my Ambientlights in the house. I think it can talk to philips hue.
Wonder if you could use Home Assistant to make the cloud tell you the weather dynamically. Blue on rainy days, yellow on sunny, purple for snow, red for heat advisory.
The look of it being brighter at the edge is a really nice effect. Realistically, a cloud would be more opaque toward the middle so it makes sense if it's darker.
RGB makes everything better. I wish hue wasn't so expensive, two of my $40/ea bulbs died after just a couple months and they refused to replace them because you aren't supposed to use them in any light fixture "without adequate ventilation"... which is basically all my light fixtures.
Is this actually a Hue light strip? I agree that Hue is overpriced. That box doesn't look like a Hue product though. If there's something that's compatible with its protocol than that's something I might buy considering how many other Hue bulbs I have.
Definitely look into the WLED software when it comes time to upgrade to individually addressable LED pixels. All sorts of cool effects with no coding needed at all.
✨thaaat’ll dooo✨ what a fab video! Adore the final result! If I were in any way technologically-minded and were not a soon-to-be final year university student, I would totally do this. Even with the room light and camera settings perhaps making the light dimmer, it was clear to see how bright each colour was emanating through and around the cloud. Really lovely! One can never have too many cloud or multicoloured themed items in one’s life, after all ☁️🌈 I wonder whether there is a (compatible) smart device/app which would allow for an automatic colour-changing programme, rather than having to manually go in and change it to each single colour individually.
Philips Hue let's you do that, if I'm not mistaken. You can group your lights together in different setups so they change colours depending on each other. You can then program a light scene (or choose one from the gallery) and it'll subtly change the colours over time - you decide if and how fast it's changing -, or you can sync it to your entertainment equipment (music, films, games) and it'll change accordingly while you listen/watch/play. We're not using that a lot in our setup at home, but you could. I'm pretty sure people have worked out light scenes for a rainbow or a (slow) thunderstorm, which would be pretty neat for this project. 🌈
@@inky_feathers seeing this over a month late, but thank you for the suggestion! Might have to look into that. I appreciate you going into such detail!
Sorry, I'm an idiot. For dumb dumbs like me the LED strip you purchased just works out the box with the Phillips hue app? If so that's amazing and just what I need!
Ooh I should have explained. I’m using it with the Philips Hue Bridge. A small box plugged in and on my WiFi. The light connects to the bridge, and the app also connects to the bridge. I’m not sure if you can use it without a bridge, but if you’ve got an Alexa that’ll work as one I think!
@@MattGrayYES Ah I'm with you, thank you! I'm getting my new place soon and haven't had the fun of a "smart home" before so I'm looking forward to learning all these new tech toys, this will be perfect for lighting up a bookcase I'm planning
I know you can make esp32 controlled ZigBee devices, and I think Hue is a variant on ZigBee - I know it's compatible with IKEA Trådfri which is also a ZigBee variant. I think it's easier to connect a variety of devices to a DIY ZigBee hub using Openhab than it is the proprietary ones but it CAN be done.
Looks cool. And you wouldn't have been able to do it with a Pico W anyway, as it only does Wifi, not Zigbee, so your solution, was not just the simplest and best, it was the only solution. 🙂
OK, but WHY even bother with Philips Hue as the chosen protocol for communicating wirelessly with more affordable smart lighting? I suppose that's the convenient approach if one has already invested in putting Hue lights around the home.
Im shocked that applying a sticker is 'Good Content' but here we are. -- Matt, you are fun to watch... but I mean... this video was you just applying a sticker...
I did something similar with a replica Miffy lamp for $30. I got it on Temu, removed the base with the LED light in and then bought a $12 E27 salt rock lamp on Amazon, added a Philips Hue bulb and got the hue dimmer switch for my son’s room. It works so well. I was actually thinking about doing the same thing with the IKEA cloud
Now I've found this is so easy, I feel like I should put lights on everything!

Yes!
I say you should!

That sounds cool, but how would you implement it for days when the weather is changing a lot?
@@ragnkja it will be a disco on that wall.
@@ragnkja rave time :p
You absolutely can, I do this with a couple of neopixels behind a picture frame!
Definitely! Home Assistant has the weather thingy built in, so it would just be a simple automation to update the color on weather change

Yep, runs on anything, bridges to home-assistant and other various softwares. also controllable via a free mobile app (Even on iOS!). fantastic stuff.
And it can be setup to run rgb with a couple transistors.

I stuck that strip under the edge of my shelves, and it looks lovely.
Big fan of shouting at my lights to turn them on, so thanks for the link to strips that will work with that
Matt Gray doing silly electronics with blahaj in the background is the kind of nonbinary representation the world deserves
very much not a tech guy, but always entertained and interested by your videos!
Is that a Blahaj in the background?
Huemanic is a great app for your phone that has built in presents like thunderstorm and sunrises. It can also interact with music
