    The Genesis version isn't as colorful as the SNES version (and, by extension, the movie), but it's a good deal more atmospheric. The "Revenge of the Toys" section really benefits from the more muted colors--it feels like Woody's world has just gotten very dark.

      It helps that you get more screen on Genesis. You can see things coming a touch sooner to help react in time. I'm curious to try snes now to see if it's really that much different. I bet it's still fun. Looks like Genesis but a bit slower and a few less things.
      Maybe I'll beat Genesis and then go to Snes for the ultimate challenge. Lol

    4:02 to 4:10 sorry guys, but you have slipped on a banana peel here. You are comparing the "night" stages. The genesis version is darker because is supposed to be night at these 2 occasions (the level where the toys rebel against Woody for push Buzz over the window, its night time in the movie. And the level where you enter Pizza Planet. Its dark inside, just like the movie). Dont blame Sega for not using more bright colors if Nintendo is not doing the atmosphere right

      The SNES version wasn't rushed, it just suffers from various SNES issues such as limited resolution (256x224 pixels vs 320x224 for Genesis) or the fact that data on Genesis take less space (music in particular) meaning that, for same ROM sizes, Genesis games can have more stuff (more levels, more music, etc.).
      See also Earthworm Jim or Mickey Mania for similar cases.

    • @baigandinel7956
      @baigandinel7956 8 лет назад +4

      +Parallax Craze You have no idea about the development of the game so you're arguing off of some things you wrote down on the back of a napkin. I'm not surprised if Genesis' simplistic jingles take up less space.

    • @parallaxcraze958
      @parallaxcraze958 8 лет назад +22

      +Baigandine L
      Most if not all games that were initially developed for the Genesis and then ported to SNES ended being inferior: Earthworm Jim, Mickey Mania, Cool Spot or here Toy Story. I'm arguing based on what I know about the technical differences between the two hardwares which these comparison videos demonstrate: importance of better CPU, importance of higher resolution, etc.
      And nothing "simplistic" about FM sound, just not the same *kind* of sound and if you don't like it that's fine because tastes are a thing. If SNES music takes more space it's solely due to the fact that it's all samples-based but the sample quality is often average since SNES doesn't have lot of RAM (samples consume lot of that) and the fact that samples take more space also means that, for equal ROMs sizes, the sound data will occupy more storage which can lead to lacking content as it happens here with Toy Story whose SNES version lacks some music and voices.

    • @baigandinel7956
      @baigandinel7956 8 лет назад

      Parallax Craze There are numerous examples of superior SNES versions, whether overall, or having better animations than the Sega counterpart. You are wearing rose-tinted goggles. Anyone who says the SNES is "lacking" audio-wise is clearly biased. All Genesis music sounds the same, and most of it sounds like garbage. There is nothing "muffled." It sounds perfectly competent. The AWFUL music coming in "clearer" is not superior. If it were so superior they would have modeled it after the Genesis. Because at the end of the day what you're hearing is awful. There are countless Super Nintendo ports that are better. How do you explain that? I'm sure you explain it some "other way". Because you are using circular logic.

In several of your comparisons you have given the win to Sega due to an extra sing or two but admit the SNES version sounds better (which it does). Yeah, I'd have to agree that the genesis game is better as a whole. More pics and more responsive controls for starters. The Snes definitely has better use of color, but some choices, like the orange background in the pizza planet level are baffling to me. Not to mention that the nintendo version plays a bit slower and feels choppier at times. The voice overs in the SNES feel like a godsend compared to the genesis version, however.
    And I think its weird that the daytoyna level got flack for controls, considering that RC handles better there than the overhead driving segments.

    I think your videos are pretty good. The only thing is that the acting is a little hokey. Some moments are just a little cheesy and awkward. The video pace is kind of all over the place, and it's not very consistent. The jokes fell a little bit forced and somewhat cringe worthy at times too. Sometimes they last too long and slow down the pacing of the videos. The breakdowns you guys do of the games are great, and the fact that you both have conflicting personalities can make for interesting segments and conflicts. weird. makes you wonder why didn't they use it. maybe a rights thing. Some of those choices are weird since snes games can play music at all times.

    It's funny how 'You've got a Friend in Me' IS in the SNES game's code, but for whatever reason it wasn't implemented where it needed to be. There do exist PAR or Game Genie codes to play the track though.

    Dear "Console Wars":
    Excellent video! One notable error, though: The theme song for Toy Story is "You've Got A Friend In Me", but was misidentified at 9:13 in the video as "Friend Like Me" (from Disney's Aladdin). I'm surprised that I barely noticed it now, and not the first time I saw your video (near Thanksgiving 2017). Other than that, not a bad production. Keep up the good work!
    Sincerely,

    Did you know that Japan was only able to get one of the two versions? That was the SNES/Super Famciom release, which Capcom brought over for distribution. Too bad, they missed out on the superior Sega Megadrive/Genesis release. GameFAQs is my source for the evidence.

    Maybe Disney had something against Nintendo or something since they always ended up making their games better on Sega’s 16-bit iconic platform. My guess is it was easier to animate with the blast processing but maybe it was saltiness over the notorious Nintendo licensing costs. Who knows!?

      Anthony McClintock Model 2.

    • @brpadington
      @brpadington 9 лет назад +4

      Console Wars
      That explains at least some of the distortion you have in some of the clips. The best models to get are the high definition graphics labeled model 1. They have clear sound and obscene bass. Also they are like 20 bucks.

    • @Christuserloeser
      @Christuserloeser 9 лет назад +1

      Console Wars I agree with Anthony McClintock. An early model 1 (with "High Definition Graphics" written on its bezel) has the very best sound quality. Sounds A LOT richer and cleaner.
      Make sure you use the headphone out for stereo, the AV out only outputs mono.

    • @brpadington
      @brpadington 9 лет назад +1

      ***** It is also worth mentioning that the JVC Xeye has very good sound as well.

    • @Christuserloeser
      @Christuserloeser 9 лет назад +1

      I tested it against a model 1 and the model 1 still sounds (slightly) better and it's more accurate. The X'eye uses a newer Sega variant of the original sound chip which fixed issues with the original Yamaha 2612 - but since some games used the issues as exploits they don't sound as they should (i.e. Hellfire and Afterburner 2).
      It's a great all-in-one solution but it won't replace my model 1.

    The extra level actually does help... sort of. For each battery cell you pick up, you get 2 stars. And the stars in both games help give you extra lives AND sometimes a continue. I always managed to get an extra life heading into the final level because of the extra level in the Genesis game.
    Anyways, another great episode as usual. :)
    One more thing, since you guys have been given requests to do Super Mario World vs. Sonic the Hedgehog AND a suggestion to do an episode where you two switch roles (meaning Greg becomes Sega and Dan becomes Nintendo)... if you guys decide to compare those games, let THAT be the episode where you switch roles

    Honestly the SNES colours look way better, but the sprites look slightly better in the Mega Drive. And the cutscenes! While the SNES pictures look better, the lack of sound and the Mega Drive’s extra pictures is still superior. The SNES also has better sound, voice, and music, as is expected of the SNES, but the Mega Drive still does an admirable job. But how on earth does the SNES version not have the most important song in the movie!? And why is it missing so many tracks!? And that bonus level looks great! Why does the SNES miss that. And yeah, SEGA deserves the control award.
    Honestly the SNES could’ve easily handled a game like this way better than SEGA if it were done properly. Except for maybe the DOOM level, where the SNES would’ve still had to have a smaller screen due to it being bad at 3D. I think the devs just spent longer on the Mega Drive, despite its inferior hardware.

    Between Snes and genesis, sega is better
    The scene of where woody knock buzz out the window.
    The level with rex escaping: 0:11
    Sega graphics looks abit dark yet with a view outside of another house with the sky color
    nintendo graphics looks too bright and warm but makes sense that takes place in the evening but no view of the house and the sky
    The level of pizza planet 4:06
    nintendo graphics looks colorful and bright unlike the movie where its dark
    sega graphics looks dark which matches the movie environment
    Sound in the levels
    andy room in the first level with the soldiers: 7:48
    nintendo sounds better but acts slow and robotic Ok move . . move . . move
    sega sounds alright but acts more real and fast like a real soldier but music pauses Ok MOVEMOVEMOVE
    woody's nightmare 7:54
    nintendo: music starts while buzz speaks
    sega: buzz speaks then the music starts but imagine being in the game where its dark and silent then hearing buzz voice and slowly appearing in front of you then the music starts that you know your fighting for your life.
    Buzz and woody blasting off 7:58
    nintendo sounds better then sega
    controls between the two as woody:
    in nintendo you need to time your attack to hit and interact
    in sega the attack covers enough to attack and interact which is less difficult.

    If there is one thing I gotta dispute on this episode, its the "Better Sound" judgement. An two extra songs don't negate the poorer overall quality. Especially since sound effects, which include digitized speech, and music are part of the same category.
