The main reason you'll often have more sound effects and animations in Genesis games is because Super NES games used samples for the music, so it ended up using a lot of space, whereas the Genesis could just adjust values on the FM synth which used almost no space

I think the SNES version has loading times because it compressed the game assets heavily, and because the SNES has a slower CPU, it takes longer to decompress everything. Seems like the most logical reasoning to me anyway, since I'm actually not 100% sure.
The thing that would cause load times on a cart game would usually be compressing the assets heavily into a smaller than normal ROM space. My guess is Mr. Nutz and DKC uses much bigger ROM space because of the huge assets, but for some reason they went with smaller ROM space than normal for this game? It's just a guess of course. That's not to say the Genesis doesn't have games without loading. Aero Blaster on Genesis has load times exactly because of this reason (They squeezed bigger than normal assets onto 4 Megabits of space, whereas the PC Engine version has smaller assets on 4 Megabits and no loading). The Genesis and SNES version of Micky Mania are both 16 Megabits, so it seems likely. Edit: I checked to make sure, and Mr. Nutz is 8 Megabits, but the game has very simplistic assets compared to DKC and Micky Mania, so that game would not need to load. DKC on the other hand is 32 Megabits. Yeah, that sounds about right for that game.
Doggycharly PLZ They both do have load times, but the SFC version is just much faster. That's a good point though, I wonder why that is. Both games are 24 Megabits. The Genesis version is indeed MUCH better! It runs in higher resolution, it's smoother, it has more animation frames, it has more levels aaand no loading times, unlike SNES version. What's funny about SNES fanboys is when you explain them that the Genesis has a better resolution (320x224 pixels vs 256x224 for SNES) and that, due to its square shape resolution, SNES resolution makes for cropped screen and stretched graphics once on TV (to fit the expected 4:3 ratio) they damage control with bullshit such as "and so? SNES has bigger sprites in the end!" lol, so lol... In a similar way some of them also say that slowdowns which occur in many SNES games are here on purpose while actually most of these games have slowdowns due to SNES weak CPU...
Never heard of run saber, and had to look it up. That makes sense, my first guess was Shinobi vs Hagane. Then i thought Hagane is a very expensive rare game to get a hold of.
Retro fun fact! 5:48 Alot of ppl don't realize that even though Snes specs state it can achieve a 512x448 resolution, in practice virtually every game ran @ the cropped 256x224 resolution that you stated Dan, where most Gen games ran @ a fuller 320x224 res. Snes only displayed 512x during a few title/menu screens or something I'm pretty sure.
If you have any doubts about the SNES version being worse, check out Retropolis Zone's Quickies Don't Cut It review of that game. It's really good and he takes a look at ALL versions. Also, I played the SNES version on my friend's SNES and later played the MD/Genesis version on the Mega Drive... emulator... I don't own a Mega Drive (or SNES) but I prefer the Mega Drive version for sure.
Why...just why did we Americans all use Gems, with only a few good sounding exceptions (Comix Zone) to my knowledge, most US Gen games sounded like farts and cracks, just why?! Gems sucked. The Gen Sound chip is awesome just ask our friends down in Japan. (SOR, Shinobi, Thunder Force anyone?)
Another great episode guys. IMO one of the best so far (and it's not just because Sega won. Mario Paint vs Wacky Worlds/Art Alive is another favorite) Also I see people recommend Knights of the Round vs Golden Axe. Just want to point out there's 3 Golden Axes on Genesis, Golden Axe 2 releasing the same year as Knights of the Round. Don't know which one you should compare, though. Spoilers: Next episode prediction Calling it now; Run Saber's gonna win.
This is a awesome episode :) can't wait for the next episode to come out. Mickey mania is one of all time favorites on Sega Genesis, due it's tribute to past Mickey Mouse episodes/specials and music in the game
I've only played the Genesis version but I remember it being a really good game, after watching this had I played the SNES version after it would have felt disappointing. This was an awesome and clever way to do a comparison, you guys definitely earned a sub from me! I would love to see you guys do a comparison on Justice League Task Force.
Just recently discovered your channel, it's awesome. So far, both of you guys seem to be the best at doing Justice to both consoles and you guys definitely shut fanboys mouth's and put them on their place on Both Sides! I am anxious to see what you guys will bring out next and hopefully you may do many more so that future 16-bit fans can have a more decent and reliable perspective on games for both Consoles. I would also hope to see one of these on the Batman Return games for both consoles in the future. I know one is a beat em up and the other a platform side scroller, but I love both games, although one more than the other, and I believe the comments on the one I like tend to be of dissatisfaction, which shouldn't be the case. or an episode on F- Zero would be really cool, I may know of a good suiting rival for it in the presence of The Outrun series: Outrun 2019. thank you guys, keep up the awesome work!😃
Jon burton of Traveler's tale coded this game for the genesis but the snes version was coded by Chris Stanforth who worked for TT at the time. So while both games were made at TT its sort of was lead developed on the genesis.
Once again awesome episode guys!!! I got to say i was a bit surprised of the outcome even though i like SEGA more than SNES. I thought that SNES would have had the better version. It's nice to know that it doesn't. :-)

Ryuma King Both are 3rd person racing games, both are emblematic in their respective consoles and both share the arcade feeling in their gameplay. If I could find a difference it would be the fact that in Outrun you are racing against the clock and in Top Gear you are not. But if Console War is a show about comparing versions of a Game (Sega vs Nintendo), then there is nothing much to say. Top Gear 2 is the winner since Genesis and Super Nintendo have their respective versions of this great game.
You know these VS episodes got me thinking about Framerate, because I was watching raiden SNES vs genesis comparison. And it seems to run at 60 on genesis and 30 on snes. But it seems you need a device like digital foundry to count the frames.
Basically, this game was very specifically coded for the Mega-Drive. You can actually find the founder of Travellers Tales on RUclips now (GameHut) where he uploads all kind of videos talking about the technical tricks used to get the very most of the Sega Mega-Drive, including how the Moose Chase scene in Mickey Mania was made. Its fascinating stuff! Just today, he's uploaded how the rotating tower was done.
Man, the SNES version got butchered! I'm gonna hafta check out the Genesis one. It looks like a really cool game. Great episode, guys! That sock at the end had me rolling!
Clean sweep for Sega! Certainly an excellent example of late life cycle 16 bit game and what could be achieved. I believe the load times were due to the heavy compression needed to fit the game and all those detailed graphics into the cart size used and because of the slower CPU in the SNES, it took longer to unpack it all.
I'm surprised neither of you mentioned that Mickey seems to move a fair bit slower on Genesis. I have both and I agree that Genesis is the better game, but Mickey definitely moves faster on Snes .
I laughed at the Sonic jokes, because I know this was only made it for fun. BUT... If some nintendo fanboys use that "nostalgia" argument for the sonic games, oh boy... I mean, New Super Mario Bros? NES Remix? Super Mario Maker? I REALLY hope noone uses that argument haha
I think video game companies should start taking things that were popular back then and bring them back or "reinvent the wheel" because nowadays one of the reasons I think console gen 8 sucks is because of a lack of innovation.
This is a very cool episode! I never played the SNES version, but I think Mickey Mania on the Genesis is a ton of fun! Plus, that music... 👌 Great work, fellas! I need to go back and watch a few of your other episodes! xx

Great Video. Rare to see a Sega game beat a nintendo game in all departments in one of your videos. But the Mickey mania on Genesis is just the better of the 2. The CD versions are great too. An excellent game anyway
Yeah that's what happens you port games made for the genesis to the snes. Loading times, cropped screen and missing levels and music. Good video guys. (snes should've won sound because it sounds so good tho)
Yeah I thought so at first also, but since the genesis couldn't technically sound as good because of it's chip, it really wouldn't be fair. The point is more effort went into the Genesis version.
***** I wouldn't exactly say he's being a fanboy... I'm a hardcore Nintendo fan myself. Plus I grew up with the snes version of the game, and I still think the genesis version is superior. Lol
***** I don't know about that. It seems like Sega had the better multi platform games more often than not. Probably because the snes versions were lazy ports. Nintendo just had some really stellar exclusives, and having second and third party companies like Rare and Square really helped.
***** Yeah, Mortal Kombat 2 and 3 were better on snes, and Earthworm Jim was better on Genesis for the most part. Cool Spot, RoboCop, The Terminator, and X-Men I can't really give my opinion on because I've only played Cool Spot, and I played it on Super Nintendo. I thought it was really good on Snes though. Aladdin is one that I know most people say is better on Genesis, but personally I disagree. I think both games are totally different from one another and both do what they do well. They are both great games in their own right and I don't think one is really better than the other. Actually a lot of the best games for each system were only on that system, which is a damn fine reason own them both. Like I said, I grew up with Super Nintendo so I prefer it over the Genesis, but I try not to be bias. I just love the 16-bit era period. :)

Good to know!
Damn, a game this late being so much better on Sega? What the hell happened? Great vid as always guys.
Also I need to get me that box
Thanks! And that box is pretty sweet!
This one and Earthworm Jim are my favorite episodes ;) cheers guys
Cool!
OMG! I DIED on the "carbonite" sock at the end.... LOLOLOLOLOL!!! Great vid guys!
Thanks dude!
Actually, I think the SEGA music sounds a bit better...!
true. i always listened sega music more i don't really like snes music in mickey mania
sega genesis sounds like reall game music. Snes sounds like mp3 file compressed to 64kbps
+ben owen matt furniss is legend
Why...just why did we Americans all use Gems, with only a few good sounding exceptions (Comix Zone) to my knowledge, most US Gen games sounded like farts and cracks, just why?! Gems sucked.
The Gen Sound chip is awesome just ask our friends down in Japan.
(SOR, Shinobi, Thunder Force anyone?)
+Retro Soul contra hard corps, phantasy star, shining force 2.
Dude, the moose transition at 3:26 is amazing
Yeah, gotta go with Sega on this one. I much prefer Mickey's Magical Quest on the SNES.
ruclips.net/video/kRCSoPVbe8I/видео.html
@@autobotstarscream765 No doubt.
another amazing episode. this was so worth the wait. i cant wait till next time!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I loved it when you called yourselves out on nostalgia!
Another great episode guys. IMO one of the best so far (and it's not just because Sega won. Mario Paint vs Wacky Worlds/Art Alive is another favorite)
Also I see people recommend Knights of the Round vs Golden Axe. Just want to point out there's 3 Golden Axes on Genesis, Golden Axe 2 releasing the same year as Knights of the Round. Don't know which one you should compare, though.
Spoilers: Next episode prediction
Calling it now; Run Saber's gonna win.
Oh my god. Poor SEGA dude, discovering all this stuff about his family for the first time...
The ending was freaking funny!!! Love it guys,
Sock and Vaseline...classic!!!
By far, the Sega Genesis version won!
I know one is a beat em up and the other a platform side scroller, but I love both games, although one more than the other, and I believe the comments on the one I like tend to be of dissatisfaction, which shouldn't be the case. or an episode on F- Zero would be really cool, I may know of a good suiting rival for it in the presence of The Outrun series: Outrun 2019. thank you guys, keep up the awesome work!😃
I just like that at least one of you knows how important the shower is after a violating event.
Jon burton of Traveler's tale coded this game for the genesis but the snes version was coded by Chris Stanforth who worked for TT at the time. So while both games were made at TT its sort of was lead developed on the genesis.
perfect episode, mega drive have more enemys voices overs too, congratulations guys.
Good job
I liked the soundtrack for SNES and for game reviews I've got a couple another Disney game which is Pinocchio and Cool Spot is the other.
Once again awesome episode guys!!! I got to say i was a bit surprised of the outcome even though i like SEGA more than SNES. I thought that SNES would have had the better version. It's nice to know that it doesn't. :-)
Yeah it was nice to see a genesis sweep
it sure was ☺
Exactly
Just found your channel, great vid! I used to love this game as a kid, and this retrospective is fun and clever! You gained a subscriber.
Nice! Welcome to the channel!
really digging the show guys!
Thank you!
fuck u 8bit Eric haha lol just alwayz wanted to say that to u.....u guyz r pretty kinda gay but ur content is pretty kinda good 😂.....love the vidz...love ur cameos in The Game Chasers™ Eric
+Steven Webb oohhh snapp
If I were going to review the two between Sega and SNES I’d definitely do the Sega CD version. That’s the best one visually and for sound.
hahaha! nice and dirty ending.
Now Top Gear vs Outrun!
Or Top Gear vs Top Gear, or Top Gear vs Lotus or Lamborghini Challenge vs Lotus.
No thank you :) just Top Gear vs Outrun
Top Gear and OutRun aren't really similar, unless we are talking about 3000 and 2019.
Top Gear 2 is the winner since Genesis and Super Nintendo have their respective versions of this great game.
there is Top Gear on the genesis too
You know these VS episodes got me thinking about Framerate, because I was watching raiden SNES vs genesis comparison. And it seems to run at 60 on genesis and 30 on snes. But it seems you need a device like digital foundry to count the frames.
Loved the fourth wall break 😂
Another awesome video, still waiting for NHL 94..keep the videos coming!
Awesome vid indeed.
I prefer MD version too.
Me too
Great video as always!
Sega wins again! lol Thats why I never even owned a Snes and went from NES to Sega!
Def play the Sega version.
Hello Sega CD better than super Nintendo and Sega genesis 😝😲😡🙍♂️👄💋💅💘❤💓💔💕💖💗💝💞💜💛💙❣❣💟💌👠👒👡👢👑💄💍💎🎒👞😚😅
Great episode. You guys did a fantastic job. I look forward to the next one.
Snes cpu is faster than genesis if programmed right. This was a genesis game barely ported to Snes.
Awesome video, Guys! And, lots of great laughs!
I really love this videos
I'm surprised neither of you mentioned that Mickey seems to move a fair bit slower on Genesis.
I have both and I agree that Genesis is the better game, but Mickey definitely moves faster on Snes .
Very funny and clever! Good work guys.
Thanks!
I agree
I always tought snes version was better when i played it in my snes in the early 90's. Turns out i should have gotten it for my mega drive.
Wait.. so, Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Super Mario 3D World are bad Mario's games? Well, I think that someone it's in fall of nostalgia...
Super Mario Maker was designed by Miyamoto after playing LittleBIGPlanet and wishing he'd done it first.
***** he deleted the comment?
You guys do realize that pretty much every company uses nostalgia.
I think video game companies should start taking things that were popular back then and bring them back or "reinvent the wheel" because nowadays one of the reasons I think console gen 8 sucks is because of a lack of innovation.
I just remembered another game you guys can do. Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure for SNES and Genesis.
Great episode! I love both versions of this game lol.
But that loading time on SNES...ouch.
+Console Wars yeah the loading time was lame lol. batman forever on the snes also has a loading time where as the sega version does not
Good to know.
+Console Wars possible candidate for a new episode maybe? ;)
+Console Wars sonic mania has everyone hyped
Great as always guys!
Keep it up!
This is a very cool episode! I never played the SNES version, but I think Mickey Mania on the Genesis is a ton of fun! Plus, that music... 👌
Great work, fellas! I need to go back and watch a few of your other episodes!
xx
Glad you enjoyed it!
The Super Nintendo version was pretty good.
No not😝😲😡😠
The genesis music is way better to listen too it doesn't tune out like the snes does
A skeleton killing himself? It's already dead though.
Recently been doing binge watching on your episodes again .... wow you guys 30k I remember when I subbed you guys had like 16 ... keep up the great work
16 or 16K? In any case, thanks for sticking with us!
Console Wars ...16k....auto correct deleted the K
Great Video. Rare to see a Sega game beat a nintendo game in all departments in one of your videos. But the Mickey mania on Genesis is just the better of the 2. The CD versions are great too. An excellent game anyway
Thanks for the video guys the humor was spot on for this one.
Glad you enjoyed it!
*****
I wouldn't exactly say he's being a fanboy... I'm a hardcore Nintendo fan myself. Plus I grew up with the snes version of the game, and I still think the genesis version is superior. Lol
*****
I actually prefer the genesis over the super nintendo.
*****
I don't know about that. It seems like Sega had the better multi platform games more often than not. Probably because the snes versions were lazy ports. Nintendo just had some really stellar exclusives, and having second and third party companies like Rare and Square really helped.
*****
Yeah, Mortal Kombat 2 and 3 were better on snes, and Earthworm Jim was better on Genesis for the most part. :)
11:23 Actually, the super Nintendo version does have that music track. It just isn't used in the game. Even the game over and level card music.
