- Today Melissa and I visit Martin Woodworking and take a close look at their "I Dry" Kiln. This Kiln can dry up to 2,000 Board Feet of Lumber and is loaded with tech and features. Kilns are used to dry green lumber so that it can be used for woodworking

I work part-time at a woodyard , they have four kilns there for drying, They use an outdoor wood furnace to heat them. They offer dried lumber , and dried cordwood.

I think a wood lathe for Melissa would be a good fit. You have no shortage of turning blanks. Cherry is one of my favorites to turn. New adventures on the horizon 👍

This is a great video !! Melissa you would love a lathe. So many simple things you can turn, its easy and fun !
I just have a small benchtop lathe right now, my uncle borrowed my large one...I mostly just made pens quit making them this past Christmas, way too expensive to make that stuff just to give it away, so I made the last 12 pen/pencil sets for a friend's family and that was the end, boxed up everything I had left and threw it all in the trash, now the lathe just sits on the workbench, next to the metal lathe that I only used a couple times LOL. Sounds cool, till you are buying the materials and components for that stuff, it gets very expensive, very fast when people don't want to pay the prices that the stuff even sells for, let alone pay for the labor involved. It was kind of fun for a while, but after making a few hundred, it gets very boring, and very tedious LOL
I heard the term "engineered". That seems quite accurate. As an engineer I love seeing folks build things from scratch to do a job but you can tell when design comes first and building comes second. This thing was built in the minds of engineers and on their computer screens for months or years before it ever existed in the real world. Amazing piece of equipment. This thing should last a long time.
I thought it was interesting that it works under a vacuum. This allows the water molecules to vaporize at a lower temperature, therefore less energy is used to dry the wood. PV= nRT

That's the smallest one that company sells at $56,000....they have a much larger one at $500,000+.

Mike & Melissa - I would add my thanks to Chris & his wife for their service to our country. Great video - very clear on how the thing works. I'm going to make one suggestion. Early in the video when you two were in the jeep traveling, I had a hard time understanding Melissa, unless I adjusted the audio between the two of you. It's mainly because Melissa was on the other side of the jeep from the camera, and I'm guessing you were using a mike on the camera. Because Melissa has a softer voice she's also going to be harder to pick up. Don't know if you can run two wireless connections to the camera, but that might solve the problem. Hello, I've had an eye dry 2.0 for a two-and-a-half years. In Wisconsin. Some thoughts to consider. The Live Edge slabs in 8ft boards the amount of wood that you can hold as considerably lesson two thousand board feet. Your biggest problem will be that people will want you to do custom drying. The biggest bang for the buck is drying your own Lumber. After about six months You'll wish you had another one. I think it makes more sense to have two smaller ones than one bigger one. Unless somebody's cutting the boards to perfectly fit you can't use the space correctly. Most custom drying jobs are 5 to 10 ft long and they just don't fit really well. I can only get in 1200 board foot Live Edge on average loads
One of those would fit under the patio roof of the new building very nicely, since the pool got put on hold indefinitely.

At a minimum a month, most times much longer...if you do it right, it takes a long time, key is to do it as slow as possible to keep from sucking too much moisture out too quickly and causing the wood to crack.
I've had an eye dry 2.0 running nonstop for almost two and a half years. I noticed somebody thinks it takes a month to dry wood with this machine. Talk to somebody who owns one. I've never left a load in 4 a month. If you put good Lumber in it you get good Lumber out. If you're buying cheap Lumber that should be a tie log don't be surprised if it cracks. Loves black walnut

Melissa would love a small Delta bench top lath! I loved mine. Spent many evenings turning out wooden salad bowls for the kids. My grandfather made Hard Maple rolling pins for his kids. My Dad would bring him 3" square blanks he turned on his home made lath!

Check out the solar set up that Scott from Bus Grease Monkey's been using down at his Bus compound in Tennessee with the Battleborn batteries and inverters. Whatever building you put the kiln in or if you make a kiln on a concrete slab like Nathan does down at his place in Tennessee you can offeset the cost of electric. Cloudy days, winter days... don't matter with these newer solar panels [blow snow off or broom or use some other system to keep snow off of them].

Yes having the ability to load and unload wood with a forklift onto tracks is key. As long as you have an exiting door directly to the outside.
Hey Mike and Melissa I just put a moisture meter on my latest purchase of Red Oak that I bought 9 months ago here in Pennsylvania from my multi-decade sawyer, and it measured 9% and 10% moisture on my Wagner moisture meter; so it's ready. I bought 400 board feet. It was stickered for 3 months from the sawyer when I bought it. I added another 9 months to it. You know red oak takes extra time to dry.
You guys are a great team. I love that Melissa is so motivated to step into her own as a team in the woodworking. I'm getting ready to develop my woodworking channel on You Tube. I'm looking forward to doing a shop tour. I spent decades equipping, and fine tuning my shop. I'll be thinking of you guys when I make that intro video. I'm finishing up a few projects, and then cleaning up the shop, and will be dedicating my life to this purpose. Time to shine. You guys are such an inspiration to me. I feel the glow. You love what you do, and I love it too. Thank you for your channel. An inspiration to so many.

Mike you should build yourself a solar kiln. I built one for myself a few years ago and it works great. It will get up to 150 deg just from the sun. I have a fan that circulates the air, it runs off the sun too. There is lots of information on the internet about how to make one and it is free to run. I have taken lumber out of it that measures 0% on a moisture meter. The best part is that you can make all the lumber to make it, all you have to buy is the clear roof material. As long as you have a spot that gets lots of sunshine it will work great.
Mike. I've been into wood working for over 45 years. Have our local sawmill setup a kiln. There is alot to drying lumber. First to air dry it to 17% moisture. Then into the kiln. The average time in a dehumidifier kiln is for every 1/4" thick material a week.
So 4/4 would take on average four weeks. Want more info contact me.
So, Melissa would like to get into woodworking? Get her a wood lathe, some turning tools and she will love it!

As Far ease of use that’s impressive. The electric bill is high obviously, and I’ll bet that unit is $$$. Get a refer trailer, and old outside wood boiler and old copper aluminum finned radiators. You can burn your sawmill waste, and anything you drag out of that woods of yours. Only bill would be power to run the inducer blower and circ pump, which would t be worth totaling up.

That's a really nice kiln. But it sure costs a lot to run it. I'm glad to hear you have checked out solar kilns.
For the cost to buy this one and the cost to run it you would have to do custom drying in order to afford it.
I would definitely consider building my own solar kiln. Once you are past the initial cost to build it. It doesn't cost anything to run it if you use solar panels for the power for the fans. They also remove the moisture a lot slower and I think you will get a better product from it.
I'm thinking about building a few of them and doing some custom drying for people.

My jaw dropped when Chris said he checked the status from Japan. The iDry Kiln is really impressive for sure. $126 a WEEK? Over $500 EXTRA on their power bill? WTH! So he has to be charging his customers pretty good to cover all his costs. I dont know Mike, you'd have to clear a big area down there and build another pole barn to hold the kiln and probably the next batch or 2 going in. And you'd probably have to get power company to set up a small substation down there also! To move all the stock around, in and out, you will probably need a bigger tractor or lift. Oh man! Maybe an iDry 1/2 that size? This is crazy, Melissa, you really want a kiln? Well, you really dream big! Count me in, I'll remain a loyal subscriber which ever way you go. This channel just keeps getting better! I can easily see another pole barn down at the renewable resources and processing area for the Woodmizer, kiln, implement and wood storage. You go guys, I'm loving every minute ot it!👍🚜❤
A former girl friend used to work (office) at a company that made railroad ties. Tractor trailer trucks would drop off the hardwood logs which were run thru a mill with a carbide saw that had a diameter of about five feet. Very impressive.
The raw ties would be loaded, and stickered, on small flatbed rail cars. The loaded cars would be pushed into the cylindical kiln, just like the I-Kiln, except monstrous. They would pull the vacuum for 24 hours, then vent the vacuum and fill the whole chamber with molten creosote, and add pressure. Not sure of the time, but it was a while. The creosote would fill all the voids in the fibers that were vacated by the water. The pressure would be dropped, creosote pumped out, and these massive, black hot blocks of wood will be rolled out to cool. One tie would be sacrificed and cut in half to make sure the creosote penetrated completely thru the center.
A very messy job.
You could tell from the tone of Mike's voice that an I-Kiln will be in the Morgan's future. I foresee another "drying" building being built near the "wood shed", with a long trench needed to bring the 220vac to the new machine. Before or after the wedding? 😁

Nice walk through. Impressive slab someone cut and even more impressive the kiln will take something that large. What a tree that must have been and what a journey and effort that wood has gone through to get to this point. Imagine handling a tree that size and all the processes and loading and offloading it has gone through to make its way as a slab into that kiln. and it isn't done yet. still needs to be taken out, hauled away, unloaded again and someone make it into its final product.
Melissa, I'm sure Mike can find space in the Hobby barn for one of those. Great Christmas gift. Hint Hint Mike.

Another informative video Mike, a kiln would a welcome addition to your milling process. One of my first tractor trailer driving jobs was loading trailers at Elliot Hardwood's dry Kilns in North Creek, ny and tarping the loads for transport to the Brooklyn, ny piers for shipment to Japan. In the late 60s there was a big push to built bowling allies by AMF. Hard Maple was at a premium back then.
A great little set-up
If you get a kiln, you need to get a planner, and joiner. Sure you both could make some great furniture. At the price of lumber to day, dried Oak is crazy. A lathe is fun to work with. Used one at a Boys Club in Dayton Ohio when I was 12-16 years old.
Another toy to consider for the renewable resources center. The mill needs a brother down there. In fact I was wondering if you would ever consider some sort of weather awning for the mill, adding a kiln would a good reason to add one. Chris, thank you for your service!
