- Traditional humanoid robots are complex machines whose practical uses are yet limited due to their prohibitive complexity, cost, slow speed, and lack of stability. This video presents an experimental feasibility study on a novel bipedal robot concept and prototype that takes inspiration from humanoids but features fundamental differences that drastically improve its agility and stability while reducing its complexity and cost. This Non-Anthropomorphic Bipedal Robotic System (NABiRoS) modifies the traditional bipedal form by aligning the legs in the sagittal plane and adding compliance to the feet, reducing the total number of actuated degrees of freedom to four. The platform is comparable in height to a human, but weighs much less because of its lightweight architecture and novel leg configuration. The inclusion of the compliant element showed immense improvements in the stability and robustness of walking gaits on the prototype, allowing the robot to remain stable during locomotion without any inertial feedback control. The platform was also able to traverse shallow ramps and steps and portray a certain level of emotion through the dynamic motions it performs. NABiRoS was able to achieve walking speeds of up to 0.75km/h (0.21m/s) using a simple pre-processed ZMP based gait and a positioning accuracy of +/- 0.04m with a preprocessed quasi-static algorithm. Strategies for changing the walking direction and traversing uneven terrain are currently being investigated.

Putting the cardboard box with a smiley face on it was a stroke of genius.
I love the grout trowel feet. People forget how useful flat springs are.
"An elegant way for climbing stairs" ... THAT ELEGANT???
HE IS SO HAPPY
"She", I think? (dat eyelash length!)
It's a she! ..lets not confuse this little robot okay!
She is Domp
Max Loh, are you assuming the robot's gender?
It's a girl.
that really is about as elegant a solution as I've ever seen for bipedal motion
Same
ive been climbing stairs the wrong way my whole life
Love this...
Immitating nature is good, but not if you ignore what the robots could be.
Good work focusing on robot advantages
1:38 I'M MR. NABiRoS, LOOK AT ME!
therealstormy to
This is actually pretty impressive. Good job.
This is genius. Building from first principles is necessary for innovation
YOU CAN MAKE BILLIONS JUST HAVING HIM JUMP AROUND ITS FUNNY
Such a cool take on walking
Was that hobby servo in the legs of the robot? What’s the torque of it so that it can move without problems?
its called thin mints, eat some with orange juice and toothpaste
The reason why those complicated robots do not use your simplified system is mostly because they are supposed to be able to actively balance (yours only passively balances which is a problem on terrain such as sideways inclined terrain) and they can also turn (your robot doesn't seem to be able to do that at the moment).
Additionally the main reason why they try to make the robots so seemingly unnecessarily human-like is so that they can efficiently interact with an environment designed for humans or for other reasons appropriate for human-like traversing.
pretty sure they know all that bro
Great new way for bipedal mobility. Good Job
Finally some one understood that all you have to do is to change the fucking plane of the legs
Elegant method climbing stairs.... LMAO
Well this is basically the theropod walking system, which is extremely well balanced.
Looks like this robot did way too much horse riding the day before the shoot.
>non-anthropomorphic
>has a smiling face
Super Smash Dolls Anthropormophic means a humanoid shape.
Daniel Shiwak WRONG!
Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human traits, emotions, or intentions to non-human entities....... a smiley face is a human physical trait.
This is an amazing concept
do you have more videos of this bipedal robot?? i just want to know how it walks...thanks
Very good. Keep up the good jobs.
Hey It's Plank Cousin! Great job guys!
Ready to hit the club!
Can you tell me what size are those servo motors and where I can get them?
great hard work
This robot makes me unusually happy.
is there any new video with the progress on this technology?
"an elegant method for climbing stairs"... yes, yes very elegant.
How does it turn?
I doesn't, but it can move in straight lines like nobody's business.
It turns itself on. That's the freaky part.
2:40 in the video they were prototyping it
One of the most engenius designs ever and cutest at that lol.
Perfect!!!!!!!
This seems more like a simplified quadrupedal robot, with its front and back legs moving simultaneously. It's certainly a novel machine, but it seems as though this machine would be entirely unable to rotate. The legs are going to have to be able to move laterally at some point, which would probably require some janky hopping & twisting motions, or breaking up the front and/or back legs, making into a tripod or full on quadruped again.
What simulation software did you use?
how does it turn
Awesome
Great work,
Did you used ROS to plan all those robotic moves?
What motors did you used at knee- joints?
thin mints
This I think will be the design for robots that run errands because of its gait and ability to climb obstacles. But I also think this could be a rover alternative. If its light enough, it could bounce on the moon, gallop on mars, and run on earth. Maybe even and off road vehicle wheel alternative.
lol! the box makes it look like plank from ed Edd and eddy!!! the concept is pretty cool though.
"An elegant approach to bipedal locomotion."
The robot: WOBWOBWOBWOBWOBWOB! * Zoidberg noises *
1:35 - Someday this robot will be beating human salves with a whip at the robot run lithium mines.
just cut the cord lmao
Why should they be so dump? Don't let a Human do what a Robot can do 100 times better.
OK Mr Hong. I'm not big on this stuff. it's a curiosity-interest but I plan on watching it. appreciate the response
How do you change the direction
Magnificent 😇😇😇
Used in disaster areas it has the added perk of moral boosting via hilarious crab walk
love it
What motors are used in the knee?
They can put a drone on top where the head goes, so it can also fly.
Odd bodkins... VERY interesting...
What if you give it treads for feet and only make it use it’s full legs for climbing
which servo did you use here?
It needs it's own children's show. Happy the dancing robot.
How do you steer!
Silly human the world is a 2d plane.
You need to steer in a plane though.
You don't. This robot is designed for Mario world.
Any updates?
"An elegant method for climbing stairs"
....
Elegant doesn't necessarily have to mean something looks good. I think in this situation it means more like energy efficient.
Havent any updates about this?
So how does it turn 90 degrees?
A weapon to surpass metal gear
Pas mal l'idée...
1:07 i love this design. It's like something from star wars
"this makes humanoid robots take small steps so we changed it"
*cuts to footage
*is hobbling
Ummmm how does it turn ?
NEEEXXXTTT!!!
Evolving plant form?
The less we anthropomorphize robots the better they'll get. ;-)
Good
For some reason the continuous joint knees were terrifying.
hows the robot go, walking sideways on a 5 degree floor. wont it just tip over?
I assume they'll put a joint in the ankle, plus arms would help. This is just a proof-of-concept.
Any tutorial?
but can it turn?
Could you make video on BEAR: Back-drivable Electromagnetic Actuator
Please if you have Theory information share that
funny and cool
2:13 ... Floor is LAVA 🔥
how to turn ?
When he said elegant i died. But genius idea yes. And it does still look like a human with open legs on it.
And turn?
man you invented the wheel
It can go through high doorframes.
Did the robot narrate this, too?
Interesting video overall, though.
2:33: It looks like it really needs to pee.
I have a problem with how easy it is to knock it over from the side. our constant off balance as this notes is also an ability to counter being knocked off balance, especially from the side. Could the designers in instant telescoping poles to each side of it so it can instantly counter being knocked over. let's face it biological things( common things like cats, dogs, monkeys, horses, etc. ) often try knocking things about. or maybe have it fold up and backpack it unless other wise needing it. what?
David Levesque wait for the video of the follow up robot named "ALPHRED"
Ok he can rotate?
How is this bipedal walking ?
bi = two
ped = foot
walking = walking
Great bit of technology there. Might face a problem in the real world, coz a gust of wind or a little push to the side can topple it. There's no stabilization in that plane. But i'm sure they're working on it.
mmake it an octo pus
0:53 I'm going for a scuttle, woop woop woop woop...
Boston dynamics has completely solved all of these problems.
Yes but you have to weight that against cost.
lol what a idea!soooooooo cooooooool man
But... what if you push it from the side?
Katapultoffel add arms to allow it to get up
Yeah... like the ability to control yaw.
i like
I too am too interested in robotics but I can't afford to buy the material
Due to its lightweight body made of cardboard it is able to move dynamically
if it falls on the side there is no way to get up
Can you please tell me how to make this project .I want to make this project
Yes man how do you stear it? U need 2 extra degree of freedom
It’s kind of like when Woody created Forky.
That acronym reminds me of YoRHa.
This reminds me of Тайна третьей планеты
