What I love about the adaptation of Volume 0 into a movie is that it makes Volume 0 feel like a proper prequel. Because JJK had a much broader scope, going to the Volume 0 manga after the main series can feel a bit off because of things like how you hear that Todo was involved in the events of Volume 0 but he doesn’t actually make an appearance. So the movie adds these things to Volume 0 in order to make it feel like it was written with everything that happens in the main series planned, which is great.
I don't think it was Todo who was mentioned because his school is in Kiyoto. I just rewatched JJK a couple of weeks ago after reading JJK 0. There is a 2nd year student who is powerful who Gojo mentions along side Todo and the main character of JJK 0 who goes on missions by himself. I don't know his name but I'm assuming he's important.
Todou not being there is right tho? I don't think Kyoto and Tokyo collaborate. Have forgotten but it could've been the case that something kept Kyoto busy.
@@dionysianapollomarx in the Anime they say Todo was there in the events of JJK 0. If I‘m not mistaken, they even mention that he took out a special grade. I think Todo specifically mentions using his curse-abilities instead of the standard strength-enhancing ones he uses against 1st-Grade and lower spirits
I dont think you said volume 0 enough... Lemme hear it a few more times homie.
@@emekaamerican863 Megumi mentions that Todo was a part of the Night Parade event

17:20 I completely agree with your take on Rika's characterization, but that's also kind of the point in this story, so I push back slightly. We all know that curses materialize with their lingering burdens and regrets, and Gojo states that love is the most twisted curse of all. That lack of closure in never actualizing a potential relationship with the person you love is extremely FRUSTRATING, and we as the audience have all experienced it at some point, but we are able to move on and meet new people and form new relationships as we age. Unfortunately, Rika died with her infatuation with Yuta still going strong. Hence the "chemistry" between Yuta and Rika is remains very simplistic and childlike, because it can never progress beyond that.
I believe that we may see some of this after the Culling Game in the manga. I'm thinking at some point Akutami is going to revisit this relationship. That's my hope.
@@authorRisenfromash I’m screaming at the fact the chapter had to be delayed.
@@enigmaj1494 We're all screaming, but I'm willing to bet Gege is screaming just as hard too. But he needs the break since his health was in jeopardy, just like last year. I'd rather he take some time for himself every couple of months than for him to literally kill himself trying to get what he wants out there.
@@paperboy1116 Oh trust me, I'm aware and understand. I put *had* to try and communicate it, but I didn't.
Specially the way Yuta saw her die, as a child, after the confession, NO ONE can live without trauma after that and unfortunately the cursed energy made it worse.
I completely agree with the rika point. While it didn’t make it into the actual story, akutami did include some extra info on human rika that i do wish made it into the movie. For example she wasn’t just in the hospital because she was sick, it was because she was found alone in the mountains after getting lost from with her father who was never found
Thanks for the details
i really wish they could’ve included that stuff in the movie bc it’s so interesting and gives rika more depth imo :( like no wonder she turned into a curse her family was so fucked up 😭
It wouldve been cool to show him learn to use her and what little of her abilities as he can simultaneously with him growing to see his cursw situation (and rika as a person AND apparition) as someone he genuinely loved and rekindled with.
All of that was compromised into montages so all of those aspects of their relationship is left up to our imagination sadly.
I haven’t read 0 myself yet, but i now feel that these aspects probably weren’t in much of the manga to make it worth it either 💀
Thank you for adding this-I wish it had come up in story and not just that extra character sketch page! It also hinted that Rika’s grandmother was suspicious Rika had killed her father (and that Rika stole the wedding ring from her grandmother’s jewelry box-she’s rather dark even without being a curse!)
Broly: What's your power level?
Goku: I dunno, pretty big
Broly: mine too
"there is some subtle solid chemistry between Yuta and a certain other sorcerer that could have built up to a strong emotional climax, but of course Akutatmi had to save exploring that for when these characters return in the main series". Well as long as we get to see Inumaki x Yuta I don't mind the wait. It's pretty cool that even in the movie Inumaki's only speech outside of his cursed words is Yuta's name.
So I feel I can add something to this conversation. I'm the only person in my immediate friend group who was interested in seeing this movie and was originally planning to just go by myself, however when I mentioned it in passing while talking with my husband and best friend they both immediatly said they wanted to go with me. My husband has only seen a little of JJK from walking past me watching it on my laptop with my headphones and my best friend hasn't seen a single scene. They mostly wanted to come since we hadn't been to the cinema since before the pandemic, niether of them are terribly into shonen.
We went to one of the previews yesterday (since it was the only day we all had off) and they both had a really great time with it. I asked them afterwards what they thought and how easy they found the story to follow and they said that the characters and plot were very engaging. They enjoyed the in media-res begining, how the supporting cast started out as very strange and standoffish (my best friend actually muttered 'bitch' after Yuuta's first interation with Maki, but by the end of the film she was her favourite character) but we got to know them along with Yuuta. They found the mystery and tragedy of Rika intruiging and thought Geto was an excellent villian.
The only part of the film that lost them was the fanservice at the end when the Kyoto students show up and do their things, they both said that for them it slowed down the momentum of the final act, which is fair I think, they both thought it was cute how excited I was to see them though.
So yeah, it's anecdotal, but if you don't know too much about JJK and are thinking about seeing this film, you'll probably have a fun and fulfilling experience. My best friend is now planning on watching the show (she was super into Nanami for the brief moments we saw him, she is a woman of Class and Taste) and my husband has informed me that he would divorce me for Gojo (which is fair, I would probably do the same).
This comment makes me feel happy
Wanna second this. I'm a big anime fan, my friend is a casual watcher, but we both didn't watch the anime. Went to watch the movie, had a blast! My friend knew jack shit of the world and lore (I knew tidbits from snooping around/RUclips clips), and he said he was never lost or missing pieces of info, managed to follow the story easily.
Nanami enjoyer W 😎
Looking back at the manga I still question why they pick the days they did to do these high scale attacks then I remember the whole concept of cursed energy and how it’s fueled by negative emotions and December 24 is definitely a time of year were negative emotions are at their highest
Xmas is a couples holiday in Japan, even more so than Valentine’s Day, so it’s particularly significant for this story
@@vysharra and then in the Shibuya incident that’s dated on October 31 Japan only just started celebrating Halloween like within the last five years or so
Yep between single people feeling lonely and people dating that get their plans crushed because of the crazy work schedule of an average Japanese adult the 24th is as festive as is full of bitterness in the air.
i will say in the movie they remind you alot about some of the basic stuff like that a couple of times
Agree with everything except for the Rika / Yuta relationship being the weakest part. I thought it was one of the strongest. Their relationship was formed as a childhood bond, when things are very simplistic. Rika never grew up, never matured, and Yuta had an acute case of survivor's guilt (never realising that he had pulled Rika along with him, and was constantly adding to his survivor's guilt by adding to the body count!). So telling her he loved her and letting her go was a moment of pure love, child to child, not a mature love that he might hopefully have in the future. It was beautiful.
Pure coincidence, but Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie just got released in Indonesian theater today and I managed to watch it a few hours ago, thank you for making this video to keep the conversation going for me at least. Sending love all the way from Indonesia and as always, appreciate the videos!

Edit: It's been 2 months since I published this comment, and the film finally reached my country… Just watched it with a good friend today, and HOLY SH!T it was SO GOOD. Yuta has been my favorite character ever since her returned in the main manga, and you can be damn sure that I was happy with how they tackled his story. Cutest kiss in a manga I’ve seen
THIS IS A SPOILER FOR THE END OF THE MOVIE, so read on at your own risk.
I would argue that their romantic relationship as kids doesn't need to be very complex since the incarnation of Rika that we see is only a manifestations of the instant of childish obsession that Yuta feels when he watches her die. In other words, curses are manifestations of great emotions and the emotion that created the cursed Rika is a very simple, childish emotion, and so doesn't need a deep, meaningful backstory.
I don't know, I'm pretty sure that they said the power of Yuta actually trapped Rika spirit as a curse, so she would be the real Rika (at least during the time of the movie). But yes, warped by the feelings/curse of yuta, so not really her full complete self
@@caiodiniz7371 That is pretty much what it was. Yuta's curse wasn't anything about love or anything, but for Rika to not die, essentially trapping her as a curse.
Agree with OP. Rika and Yuta's relationship in the movie is misconstrued as truly romantic.
Rika's moment at the end of the movie had so much more to do with Yuta letting go than it ever had to do with romance.
I know nothing about this series, I (edit: HAD) no interest in consuming any media related to this series. But your scripting is always so fantastic I refuse to NOT watch anything you put out. So thank you for all your hard work to produce such fantastic content! ^^
More and more I'm seeing anime series are integrating movies into thier story lines not as these stand alone, filler laided things, but as critical viewing, that later seasons just expect you to have seen. And I honestly love this. Not to say OVA's haven't been doing this, but this new wave of movies seem different.
And it all makes the movies relevant. It's a positive feedback loop for the anime content whether series or movie.
It is a great trend creatively and isn't solely reliant on marketing the anime brand name, since watchers are already invested in either the movie or the series. Tie-ins are great.
From memory:

DB Super
Demon Slayer
and ofc JJK

I’m definitely looking forward to your videos about Shibuya and the Culling Gaming arcs. Personally I love the Gojo’s past arc the most because it’s so tragic and makes so much sense as to why gojo is the way he is. I’m fully a gojo simp but his characterisation is just so good in his past arc.
It certainly helps with context with the upcoming Shibuya incident cuz the way they introduced him in the manga during that arc it’s assumed you knew who Yuta was so I went back at that time to read the prequel.
Should I? No clue, haven't watched the video yet. Will I? Abso-fucking-lutely. Already bought my cinema tickets in the next big town even though they were ridiculously overpriced and I'll scare poor children by sitting my old ass down next to them, lol. I honestly can't wait to watch it. And then re-watch the anime again. And then wait for s2. And then repeat.
yes watch it, i read the manga for this movie and it was good. :)
;)
Shut up, Annie. You’re blonde
Having just watched the movie yesterday, it was pretty awesome. Visually it's a 15/10, absolutely gorgeous. Every fight somehow only gets better and blows the anime fights out of the water, which I didn't think was possible. Gojo fucking up the curses and foreign cursed user is something I wanna watch on repeat once the movie is available online. But honestly the story and drama feels like the poorest part of the movie. It was still very good, but it especially felt rushed, something that's pretty common with anime movies. I felt like the emotional climaxes didn't feel earned, characters bonded too quickly, and the use of flashblack images to scenes we saw 3 minutes ago felt extremely cliche'd and weak. Like you said the relationship between Rika and Yuta was not there. I also felt that way for Yuta and the other 1st years, but it was better cause we actually see some bonding moments. If more time was given to the characters, the emotional scenes would have hit much harder. Overall still a fantastic movie, easily recommend to anyone curious.
You know, Yuuta reminds me a lot of a more badass Shinji Ikari, even down to the horrifying monster that’s overly protective of him. It’s ironic that in a world where misery fuels your cursed energy that a character like Shinji would be overpowered lol
I just bought the tickets so I can't wait. I love Jujutsu Kaisen so I hope the movie is good. Also it's my first time watching an anime movie in the big screen
**spoilers, kinda**
Regarding Rika and Yuta's relationship: it's implied that Rika wasn't just a normal kid, and something was off about her. Even without that, the reason she stays with Yuta after her death is because he unknowingly cursed her by making her promise to marry him, and he has to live with that
Haven’t even watched the video yet, I’m completely up to date on the manga and this is one of my favorite all time things alongside Star Wars, Jojo, Chainsaw Man, and soo much more. This movie is going to be phenomenal.

To be fair to DBS Broly, it’s definitely canon & will factor into the next DBS movie. Plus there’s Mugen Train for Demon Slayer. But I definitely need to watch JJK 0 when I get the chance.
I'm curious, why do you say DBS Broly is definitely canon? I consider the canon of Dragonball to be split between the three media it's shown in; films, TV show and manga. So unless Broly or stuff that happened in the Broly film is brought up in Super Heroes, I don't know how you can make that statement.
Ok, but does DBS Broly have any impact on the series? Because if it doesn't then who cares if it is canon or not?
@@Xemnasty akira made that movie to make broly canon to the dragon ball canon universe look it up

Dragon ball super broly is canon to the super series, And is shown in the super manga. The only thing about the movie is that it doesn’t feature the anime exclusive super saiyan blue kaioken and Super Saiyan Blue evolution. Where as in the manga, it’s heavily implied that they simply used the Perfected Super Saiyan Blue to battle broly.
The absolute best part is that this movie is coming out in between season 1 and 2, like.. in chapter 63~64. it's exactly the moment I tell my friends to read volume 0
That’s exactly when I was recommended to start reading it too! Great order to move on to the Gojo past arc following it
i agree! watching enough of jjk s1 to be invested and know how the world works and then going into s2 knowing more about big players like yuuta and geto. its the best placement.
I didn't really plan on seeing this as I mostly skip anime movies since they don't do anything for the story (with some obvious exceptions). Honestly, I had no idea what this movie was about. I saw that it had a completely different main character on the poster, and just sort of ignored it after that point. Although, now that I know it does pertain to the actual world and does matter to the plot, that makes it far, far more enticing. Thanks!
If you intend on following the anime and/or manga you will want to see this movie as Yuta, the protagonist in 0, has an influence on events in the main series and eventually has a more direct impact.
This movie is essential if you want to follow JJK in its entirety
The other comments already said it, but yeah, this movie is pretty important to the story as a whole.
Yuta is the guy Todo was upset he wasn’t in the tournament between schools and mentioned by other characters as well.
No worries, everyone! The video had already convinced me that I need to check the movie out. 🙂 I do usually skip the generic shounen movies that he talked about in the video since they don’t usually matter - unless they’re highly recommended anyway - but this looks worthwhile!
As an Anime-only scrub who just walked out of JJK0: absolutely loved it. Completely agree with Geoff the movie truly enhances a lot of the ideas and characterizations from the show (ie Maki is best girl) while setting up bigger plot threads for the future. The movie made me even more excited for next season. I was spoiled with the sealing of certain someone that occurs in the Shibuya arc but I have no details on why or how it happens so I am HYPE to see it adapted and for Yuta to come back, hopefully meet Yuji (they are so gonna be bff’s) and for some Yuta/Maki action 👀
To be fair, they said their plan was to seal him in the early episodes. Oh boy, if you like Maki you are going to enjoy something that happens right after the Shibuya arc... but maybe not so much something that happens during the Shibuya arc...
Duuude. Come on. Why are you spoiling, when you prech to know the pain
the fact that i can think of multiple moments that are from later in the manga that are strengthened by vol 0 is so great.
spoilers:
like for me my first thought was of "rika, we're just playing" because of seeing what rika could do if Yuta wasn't with geto.
Spoiler:
I was rereading the part today and only now I realized that in this moment the author gives a hint that Okkotsu doesn't want to kill Yuji. I didn't realize it earlier bc I didn't see volume 0 yet.
Ohh, that makes so much sense. Need to re-read this part
I just saw the movie in cinema's yesterday and i thought it was so good!! I haven't stopped thinking about it since than. Though i have to admit Rika's story didn't really grip me to much either and i could take it or leave it, but my friend i went with was crying, so apparently it did work very well for her. For me it was very much all the character relationships being forged or being revealed that really gripped me and formed the emotional core of the story. But i had a banging good time, and the rest of the people in the cinema seemed to have had a good time as well.
Your thoughts just make me more excited for the film this coming Saturday. It'll be sure to be a blast.
The only thing i am afraid is that people who watched the movie would want yuta to be mc rather than yuji . Most of my friends said the same, but i feel yuji is the perfect mc for the mains series
Agreed. I understand the popularity for Yuta, but Yuji had already established a connection with so many characters that it would appear absurd to take away his importance in the series just to focus on Yuta.
As someone who likes yuta a lot more than yuji, I wouldn’t like if yuta usurped yuji’s role as mc. Yuta’s character arc was already completed in the prequel. I’m perfectly content with him being utilized as a badass side character, because he’s still handling shit, even without the mc title. There’s no piccolo treatment over here.
The real highlight of the movie for me (that I figure won't get talked about much, at least) were the little touches to expand on Maki's character. Just that short little peek into what her childhood was like, and the awful guilt she was subjected to just for being born, went so far to really sell why she's so driven, so cynical, and so sincere to the point of belligerence. And seeing how much it meant to her for someone, even a total outsider to the sorcerer world like Yuta, to place his faith in her and her abilities and to accept her - all of her - for who she is was really touching. Maki has for so long felt like she should be my favorite character, and like she would be, if we got to spend more time seeing her in action and exploring her character. Just a little more is all it takes, and that little bit more the movie provided really, really reminded me of why I like Maki and the whole cast - the whole *everything* - of Jujutsu Kaisen so much.
The gabumon thing was perfectly timed with my life, true serendipity.
Also this has reaffirmed my desire to catch up with the manga and made it clear that I can go see the movie without catching up \○/
In the manga, it was revealed that Rika actually stole the ring she gave to Yuuta. I think that detail makes her more interesting
Could have seriously used that, in fact the entire movie could have used just a little more time to flesh things out especially with the main two characters of Yuta and Rika. Movie's pacing is arguably too good haha.
Very late comment, but the movie, especially the flashbacks are told from Yuta's perspective. I doubt Rika told him she stole the ring, which is why that little tidbit never included - Yuta didn't know she stole it.
Learning all the lore felt very self-indulgent and watching the movie and seeing things we only hear about in this movie made me smile ear to ear throughout the whole run time. It was my first time watching an anime movie in the theater and I got lost so many times during the fights and I remember specifically during the final fight that my brain forgot how to read subtitles and had to reread the first few words a few times.
Personally it is a great entry point and leads into the show very nicely.
It does have story related implications so anime only's should watch it.
It's just nice to watch and I really wanna watch it again when it comes to streaming.
Something I want to bring up actually has to do with the production of this movie: the English VAs have came out and said they were HORRIBLY underpaid for this movie, CrunchyRoll paying a range from 100-600 USD. That's not by the hour either; they were paid that for the entire film. The English VA for Gojo confirmed this on his Twitter. It's just really sad and unfair 😞

Good for you. Couldn't say the same for some others I know. I just hope everyone stays safe for their own well being and for the others as well.
I see M'sB is a fellow Takodachi, much respect.
This is gonna be the best of Spring!
nice to see another tako owo)9
((but oh my god im so jealous im waiting for that merch to restock how dare you do this to me ))

Saw it this weekend and loved it!
btw nice takodachi shirt 🥺
The Takodachi shirt is spectacular
I was too busy looking at the Killer Queen shirt tbh 😍
Completely unrelated the video but I love your t-shirt. Great choice 👌
Nice Takodachi shirt, very cool
I love your Ina shirt.
I watched it yesterday, and wholly and fully enjoyed it. I knew the story would be good, because there was so much discourse around Yuta in the fantôme. And it delivered!
Hey, I just watched the Saga of Tanya the Evil. Thanks for the recommendation! (previous video if anybody is confused). Season 1 was a blast. Hopefully Season 2 will come out soon.
Con: I wasn't able to form a good connection with the newly introduced characters in the short run time.
Pros: But it was great seeing the characters from season 1. Maki and Inumaki specifically were reason enough for me to enjoy this movie, they got a decent chunk of screen time. I love them both even more now. And finally, of course, the action and fighting in the third act were amazing.
Overall: 7/10. Good time, worth seeing in theaters.
I can’t wait to watch this movie even if I already know what happens. (Nice tako shirt btw)
Geoff you gotta tell us where you got that shirt!
Jeff that curse at the end.... oh my eyes (solid content as usual tho)
been waiting for this video! going to see it wednesday and hope it lives up to the hype. don’t fail me, Mr Basement 🤞
it did.
bro you make your mic sound so good
that bleep sound was 4x louder than anything else in the video, besides that keep up the informative vids i mostly skip the anime movies but ill be checking this one out.
“Hits like a tsundere you just overheard compliment you as you fall through the wall of the hot spring she was in” 😂 straight gold
First off. Of all the cursed endings you could think of, That one, I did not expect and I did not need to see But
Thank you for the awesome video Geoff
I don't think anyone actually needs convincing to watch this But DAMN do I want to watch it more now
Keep up the great work Oh and thanks for the reminder about Maburaho being a thing that happened
I hope you are having a great day, Enjoy the rest of your week, Be safe and Take care out there wherever you are (^=W=^)
I realize this is kinda irrelevant, but I love the takodachi shirts.
I hate I had to scroll this far to see a comment on it.
saw it in the UK as anime movies are really fleeting those monster designs with their colour pallet are so vivid and really makes them disconcerting.
I’m **SO** excited to make this my favorite Christmas movie of all-time
Love the Ina merch he’s wearing
Thanks. My offspring loves JK but I haven't watched it yet, so I appreciate you taking the time to discuss JK0 as an onboarding episode.
"Here to Validate the choices they already made"... Yup. Just liked and subscribed.
bro, how do you make the manga animation videos, do you make them yourself or do you have some person who support you ? i've always like your animation and i want to learn how to make the same animation please, so i would really appreciate your support
