I started dealing with hormonal acne after going off of birth control at 25. I never had acne in my teens, so I did all kinds of research. I tried salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, adapalene, topical antibiotics, etc. and the acne persisted. A few months ago I saw one of Dr. Dray's videos about azelaic acid. My real life dermatologist never mentioned this as a recommended treatment, but I was desperate for clear skin, so I purchased The Ordinary's OTC azelaic acid cream and it has literally changed my life. I went from having new breakouts every single day to not having a single blemish for 3 months straight. If you are struggling with what you believe is hormonal acne, you MUST try this stuff. It's super affordable as well.
Good to know you can use it with copper peptides. Speaking of which, I would love a deep dive on copper peptides - studies, claims, ingredients you shouldn't use it with etc.
Master esty Penn Smith Skincare is a good resource for copper peptides. She's got several videos on them including product recommendations. Not all derms/skincare folks think they are all that special though but at least consider them a form of humectant.
I had used my fineacea prescription azelic acid with the copper peptides from NiOD. Somehow if I put azelic acid right after the copper peptide, it peels off. Not sure why. I ended up using them in different routines.
Azelaic Acid changed the game!!! I'm only using the Ordinary's 10% suspension for now and it showed improvement for acne SO QUICKLY. I've had oily skin causing blackheads and closed comedones and some acne for 15 years. Benzoyl peroxide doesn't work for me. I can't use a retinol at this time due to pregnancy and breastfeeding. Salicylic, glycolic, and lactic acids haven't been doing enough. Azelaic Acid had results after day TWO!!
@@ayushishah5931 maybe a tiny bit, but I use chemical exfoliants regularly. Definitely no large pimples or cysts. More like waking up with 1 tiny white head a couple times a week that disappears in a day.
I use naturium azelaic acid every morning and its been a game changer! On top of the acid I layer ordinary squalane oil, pacifica barrier cream, then cerave tinted spf 30. The azelaic acid helps with the peeling of tret (I use .05% at night) and seems to be helping my rosacea too. I find it to be gentle but effective for sloughing off dead skin without compromising your skin. If any other rosacea sufferers are struggling to find a moisturizer that doesnt burn like hell and cause a flare the pacifica barrier cream might be worth trying, its the only one I've found for me.. Not sure if im layering everything right but the "adapting phase" struggle is real w tret 😄. Thank you Azalaic Acid and thank you Dr. Dray for all the great information as always!! ❤
I started using agency and was put on .005% tret, 5% azelaic acid, 5% tranexamic acid, and 4% niacinamide. When I tell you that my skin has never been so good, I mean it!
2 years of using TO azelaic acid didn’t help my rosacea - but it might have been a damaged skin barrier as the culprit. Following Dr. Dray’s advice of a simple skincare routine helped tremendously! I switched to Paula’s Choice azelaic acid, which was a little less irritating but then was put on low dose tretinoin so I don’t often use my Paula’s Choice product and the rosacea is pretty minimal now.❣️👍🎉
So I had to go to the drugstore yesterday to buy a lighter shade of foundation. I typically have a summer shade and a Winter shade, I have never varied from these shades and I'm in my 40s But now I've been using my Winter shade regularly and I need to go even lighter. I thank Doctor Dray for preaching the sunscreen gospel! It is completely her doing that my skin has actually got lighter in tone because I'm no longer getting as much exposure to sun!
@H T it's just proof that I'm actually getting less sun exposure and therefore less sun damage, even though I thought I was diligent about sun protection before Dr. Dray

Be sure to check with your derm and insurance before buying prescription azeleic acid. It was going to cost almost $300 through my insurance. When I discussed that with my derm she referred me to a local compounding pharmacy where I pay $36 out of pocket. My insurance plan pharmacy would only provide two brand name options and no generics. Since this something I expect to use for an extended time I would have opted for an OTC before spending that much.
Wow, I had to go to a regular pharmacy for a huge dose of one pill prescription I had to cut up (and is still too high a dose but safe), because the compound pharmacy was $50 (vs free at regular pharmacy).
Thanks, Dr. Dray! I use vitamin C and my prescription 15% Azelaic Acid every morning and have been for over 2 years now with great results. When I first started, I had to use it after moisturizer until I could tolerate it but now I can use it right after the vitamin C. Thanks for the great tips!
@@eggyboi419 After washing my face, I do vitamin C, azelaic acid (I use a pea size a bit bigger than what I use for tretinoin), then moisturize and SPF.
Happy Monday! I have used azelaic acid as well. It was helpful when my rosacea was active. Currently my tretinoin seems to keep my skin looking clearer. I am looking forward to your detailed video on light and Tretinoin that you mentioned over the weekend. I often get feedback from friends that they want to wait to try it in the winter months. So I am curious about your comments.
@@eviebrajo Hi Evie, I used a prescription when my rosacea was serious but later I tried Flawless Brightly Serum. I liked Flawless but my rosacea was mild at that time.
I use the brand Apostrophe and I have a Tretnion and azelaic acid combination prescription product. I have seen an improvement in my skin. I think azelaic acid is very helpful.
I started using a lot of scammy skincare products from The Ordinary and other brands that did not seem to improve my acne and hyperpigmentation. After watching a lot of Dr. Dray's videos, I decided to visit a dermatologist. I'm currently on tretinoin 0,025% at night + azelaic acid 20% twice a day. My dermatologist said after I reach 30 days in a row with the tretinoin every night we're going to titrate to 0,05% and then 0,1%. Purging isn't as bad as I thought and my skin is tolerating the tretinoin quite well. I'm spending less money on cosmetics and being supervised by a professional, I feel a lot more hopeful now. It's awesome to have this type of information to discuss with my doctor. Thank you so much! ❤
@@lucybelle5459 no, I name them scammy because some of the ingredients do not have relevant scientific data to back them UP (both in strength and formulation aka 10% niacinamide - can be too irritating, defeating the purpose of the active itself, aka pure vitamin c in powder form (unstable formulation, patchy aplication, without research to back the absorption up). I could go on with The Ordinary and several other cosmetic brands and products. Maybe if you kept up with Dr. Drays videos, you wouldn't go out of your way to have such a fragile reply.
I tried The Ordinary one several years ago along with several of their products at the same time. Bad decision. I broke out so bad and stopped using everything. Never knew if it was just one product or the combination. I should have introduced the products one at a time. Honestly, my skin has done so much better by keeping things super simple. Cerave cleanser, Aveeno Calm and Restore oat gel cream in the AM.and Differen and Vanicream at night. All thanks to you! Happy Monday, Dr Dray! I hope you have a tranquil evening. 💚
Could you make a video on pregnancy safe skincare? I’ve used tretinoin for years and I know that once I’m pregnant I will have to stop using it, so I was hoping you could do a video on products that can be a good alternative to those ingredients/products that we can’t use while pregnant. Thank you😊
Thisss! I want to strt it but there is no need once i get pregnant. i know as soon i get off of it face will break out bad and will be back at square one.
I've been using the Facetheory azeleic acid serum for a while and really like it. It's got calming ingredients like colloidal oatmeal and aloe. It works great at night with my retinal serum because it sorta pills, so I prefer to use it at night 😊
I have Rosacea with oily skin. I use 15% Azaleic acid and I use Vanicream Facial moisturizer and the pair work great. Make sure your skin is completely dry before you apply Azaleic Acid. This will minimize any stinging.
I am still having my first hard-core Rosacea flare. It got so bad with the redness and burning, I was finding it hard to talk. A little over a week ago I found Vanicream gentle face cleanser and it’s given me some hope (no burning sensation). Moisturizers have been very tricky, but Vanicream face moisturizer for sensitive skin has, so far, been without reaction. I had tried the Aveeno calm and restore balm the night before, and woke up to a devastatingly maroon face. Was so depressed, I laid in bed most of the day. I’m wearing a sun hat in the house, as I’m trying to give my skin a couple of weeks to heal before attempting to try another (mineral) sunscreen. I was able to get into my derm earlier this week, and he gave me prescriptions for Soolantra and Azaleic Acid 15% gel. I picked them up, but am too scared to use them. The two Vanicream products I mentioned are the only products (so far) that have not made it worse. Soon, I hope to feel confident enough to try the prescriptions. He also “prescribed” a Niacinimide based moisturizer for $48, but the night I noticed it has fragrance in it. Hasn’t helped me to feel confident in using the other two products he prescribed. I found the Vanicream moisturizer the next day. Another little ray of hope. Gotta have hope.
Dr. Dray can you please do a video on nickel allergy safe products. Over 15 million Americans have at least a contact allergy to nickel. Often those people also are allergic to cobalt. I myself have SNAS (systemic nickel allergy syndrome) I even have to be on a low nickel and low cobalt diet. It is hellish! For some reason, the Ecco-Verde site no longer sells sunscreens to USA customers I have to order all my cosmetic and personal care products from Ecco-Verde which is a European site. Thankfully in Italy they have certification for nickel and cobalt levels in products. Otherwise it’s IMPOSSIBLE to know how much is in there if you don’t test. It can be INSIDE any plant or mineral based products. So you won’t see the words “nickel” or “cobalt “ on the ingredients lists. Testing is not that expensive, especially when these companies make MULLIONS of the products. I suspect they do know how much is in there, they just don’t want to disclose it! They are missing a huge market! If the tested products were available in USA , many would buy them! PS nickel and cobalt can be inadvertently added to products during the manufacture process
I use the Aveeno moisturizer you showed, and by far it's the best I've tried so far for irritation. It's a bit pricey for the amount you get, but a little does go a long way.
Love love Love Azelaic Acid, it's such a wonderful ingredient that everyone can derive benefits from it plus it's compatible with everything ❤😊. I use the cosmetic version of course 20 % Azelaic acid by Vencil and it helped with my face redness 10 euros (11 dollars) but the prescription one here skinoren gel (cream is present here anymore 😅) 15 % strength is again 11 dollars with no prescription but if you have prescription it is less than 11 dollars (but this might differ according the health system of each country). I use it after i cleanse and then i moisturize. Thanks for reminding as the beneficial properties of azelaic acid.
Great video! I have been using Azelaic acid from "The Ordinary" for the past couple of years because it makes my skin smooth, but I have rosacea and never knew it was helping me with that too. (It does help a little bit but I still have a lot of it on my nose that I can't seem to do anything about).
Hey have you tried Vbeam laser? It is actually affordable if you are doing smaller areas on your face rather than your entire face. I just had my 1st out of 3-4 treatments and notice an improvement already. Vbeam is the gold standard for rosacea, broken facial capillaries and facial redness I have tried other treatments such as bbl laser which is pretty much useless for rosacea which I didn’t know at the time. If you decide on laser please go for Vbeam only. I don’t want you wasting your money like I did.
Been on and off Azelaic Acid from the Ordinary. Worked well the 1st week or so, then the “purging” began, but never seemed to stop so I quit after 4-8 weeks. Then started it again recently, same result. Only got worse. Bumps everywhere… I have sensitive Rosacea fungal acne skin. Disappointing as I can’t use Retinol. The 2nd time I tried it with Good Molecules Beta Arbutin Vitamin C Serum. Not a good idea. I already knew I shouldn’t as my skin hates any type of vitamin C and it’s derivatives. Tried all the hyped and popular ones. Same result, bumps, hives and even “cysts”. Gave up. Going back to minimal because my skin hates skincare, and Avene discontinued the only moisturizer I could use (Avene Tolerance Extreme Light), tho it also broke me out, but not as bad as 99% of all skincare out there. Tried everything after watching countless of derms, doctors and beauty gurus on RUclips rave about American, European, Korean and Japanese skincare products since 2019. Nothing works. My doctor prescribed Zoolantra, didn’t work either. Made it worse. All I can do is to avoid the sun, I’m vitamin D deficient and was diagnosed with diabetes type 2 back in January, and watch what I eat as I have a bunch of food intolerances and allergies…
Try going grain free, not just gluten free, but all grains. It’s hard at first because you definitely want to munch on something, but gets easier if you commit. After 4 weeks I felt better and my skin was the clearest it has been in ages. I lost 5 pounds too, so I was pretty happy about that. Now on 6 months and I’ll never go back to my old eating habits. Skin is clear, I feel really good and lost 25 lbs. I’ve not been able to do that in 10 years.
I wonder if we could split up products between us and save on cost 😅. I'm in the same boat. I could have made this post, except I haven't tried the azelaic acid yet. I'm not diagnosed with roseaca, I have seborrheic Dermatitis acne. I am allergic to everything it seems. I have Poiklioderma Cavet (sp). I have keratosis pilaris along with. I have autoimmune dermatitis from the sun , and the medication to treat my autoimmune causes sun sensitive photo dermatitis. I will have success with something, and then it quits. It's expensive to test products and such a bummer when a winner starts failing. I have noticed I have to rotate my products frequently about every 6 weeks to keep results. I have yet to tolerate a product long enough to empty its contents unless it was sample size. Since I have to rotate between several products, they'll expire before I use them up.
@@honestreviews2321 this happens to be too. I used a 3% sulfur product last week for the first time for my eczema. I felt amazing, wasn’t suffering and didn’t feel itchy. I use azaleic acid in the morning. For some reason I cant find finacea anywhere (I live in Latin America) but I did find another brand in Colombia called Rozaleic. My Doctor said if I couldnt find it I cannuse Soolantra instead. In the evening I use Adeferin (I guess the latino version of Differin). I an using Ebanel brightening serum which has a little of all the acids included, it has been helpful, but too soon to say that it will get rid of these spots. I had started out using azelaic acid suspension 10 percent, and resveratol 3 percent + ferulic acid 3 percent, and hyaluronic acid 17 percent and retinol 1.5 percent complex only using the retinol 1.5 percent complex at night, and saw how good salicylic acid works for clearing blackheads thought that might be good to add in to my routine. Turns out I ended up with dry flaky skin and redness and some puffy spots too, I am now pretty much cleared up but I did experiment to determine what caused the reaction and I believe it was the salicylic acid with the resveratol ferulic acid, because I had no problems before I used the salicylic acid, and I tried using the other ones with out the resveratol ferulic acid and had no problems, just wondering what your opinion is on this very much appreciated.
Throwing azelaic acid and retinol and salicylic acid at your skin is a LOT. So it's no surprise your skin freaked out. Many derms and estheticians recommend using only retinol for a period of maybe 6 months and then take another look at your skin to see if you even need another product.

Also Soolantra with Ivermetin worked really good for me and a cream with Metronidazol . Ask you dermatologist better. With this combination I got completely cured from rosacea.
This video came right on time. I have watched your other videos on Rosacea and decided to do something about my skin condition. I purchased Prosacea and would like to try Azelaic acid too but have been having a hard time finding a product with suitable ingredients. Naturium has Vitamin C and Sodium Benzoate that can turn carcinogenic when mixed together, other options on Amazon have Propylene Glycol high on the list which is not good for rosacea. So far I am leaning towards Paula's choice product despite it having salicylic acid which can also irritate rosacea, but I prefer that to Propylene Glycol. So far I had no problem with SA. The Ordinary AA suspension recommended here looks good too.

This is incredibly helpful- 20 minutes more than I would have had at my dermatologist’s office. Thank you!
My Tretinoin formula has 0.1% , 15% Azelaic Acid & 4% Niacinimide . 7 months in Tret is helping my Scars. ❤️🇬🇧
Where did u get your formula from?
What tret do you use?
@@Kat-5697 that’s not a low percentage at all. Standard concentrations are 0.025%, 0.05%, and 0.1%. (0.1% usually being the highest available)
Where is it from?
I wanna know where that’s from too :)
Same!
Why is that good?
@H T it's just proof that I'm actually getting less sun exposure and therefore less sun damage, even though I thought I was diligent about sun protection before Dr. Dray
Same and also with my pigmentation is not noticeable
@@ht8038 because UVA rays (which contribute to tanning) also contribute significantly to photoaging and an increased risk of skin cancer. If she's not tanning as much as she used to, it indicates less UVA exposure.
I’ve used so many of these OTC products with zero improvement, so I asked my Dermatologist for 15% Azelaic acid gel….wonderful product ❤
I’m using peach and Lily azelaic acid serum which is 10% and it stings a tiny bit but I see results! Any stubborn spot reduces with continued use :)
I Iove that you don't dumb things down. I don't like being treated as if i can't understand things. You keep it on a true medical level. Thank the old gods & the new.😊👍
Be sure to check with your derm and insurance before buying prescription azeleic acid.
I got 15 % az for $ 57.00 through goodRX, good to shop around
Compounding is the way to go for these derm prescriptions.
I buy my inn Mexico for only 10 dollars
Thanks, Dr. Dray! I use vitamin C and my prescription 15% Azelaic Acid every morning and have been for over 2 years now with great results. When I first started, I had to use it after moisturizer until I could tolerate it but now I can use it right after the vitamin C. Thanks for the great tips!
Ive never been able to tolerate it with my tretinoin at night, but thats fine :)
How do you layer your Azelaic acid with other products?
@@eggyboi419 After washing my face, I do vitamin C, azelaic acid (I use a pea size a bit bigger than what I use for tretinoin), then moisturize and SPF.
How long do you wait after the vitamin C?
@@jennalud4748 not that long just a few seconds. But you might like to wait for yours to absorb first
Happy Monday!

Theresa , what azelaic acid did you use ? Thanks
@@eviebrajo Hi Evie, I used a prescription when my rosacea was serious but later I tried Flawless Brightly Serum. I liked Flawless but my rosacea was mild at that time.
@@TheresaBerg-b3z Thanks very much 😃
I use the brand Apostrophe and I have a Tretnion and azelaic acid combination prescription product.
Thank you😊
I need this too
Avoid tret, salicylic acid tranexamic. vitamin c,glycolic acid, lactic acid, azelaic acid, niacinamide, peptides are pregnancy safe
Naturium azelaic acid is great. No pilling and my sensitive skin responds well. I’ve been using it for almost 2 years.
Paula's Choice azelaic acid has been a big help with my rosacea. Really thankful for all the skin education I receive here!
Of all the ones it’s the best. Been using it since it was released
For some reason, the Ecco-Verde site no longer sells sunscreens to USA customers
I have to order all my cosmetic and personal care products from Ecco-Verde which is a European site.
Could you make a video on a good skincare routine for melasma?

For several years I have been using Rx azelaic acid twice a day to treat Rosacea. My skin looks perfect now. It’s the only product that works.
This vid was so power-packed with info! Thanks for your time and talent Dr. Dray!
Happy Monday, Dr. Dray ❤

Happy Monday
Use Altreno prescription, I’m loving it for my rosacea and acne.
I saw recently that Peach Slices came out with an azelaic acid! I would like to try it! What are your thoughts on it Dr. Dray?
I’m enjoying Touch products!
Prosacea has good reviews on drugstore cites. Good for acne and rosacea
I felt like I discovered a cure (no joke). Used it again this week, it was only ok. No where near what I experienced the first time. Why does this Happen.
I wish I could try products with you!
Thank you for always giving great information!🥰

Nothing beats the Paula’s Choice one. I’ve tried all the other OTC ones and literally threw them out.
An adorable choice is Cos De BAHA brand. I like it better than the ordinary and it lasts me a long time. It is a serum as opposed to a cream.

I would love to know more about spironolactone for acne?? I’ve seen it usually combined with tretinoin. Currently, I use adapalene gel at night. I have PCOS so I’m assuming my acne is mostly hormonal and definitely get some unwanted facial hair. Would spironolactone help?
What goes first, azeleic acid gel or tretinoin cream? I see a lot of different answers.
I have been using 10% Azaleic Acid for mild rosacea for 4 months and it has not made any difference.
The rx strength is for rosacea. Maybe you need to go up in the strength to see the difference?
10% is too low for rosacea. You need a higher percent. I used Skinoren in Europe, which you can take Based on Dr prescription .

I have terrible rosacea flares. I use Prosacea when I have those ugly papules with redness. This product REALLY helps. When my rosacea is not as bad, I use Azelaic acid from Paula's Choice. I really like it. It works well and doesn't irritate.
@@eggyboi419 Oh great, thank you for sharing your experience! Will be purchasing Paula’s Choice next! Do you know if it’s still okay to use retinols with rosacea? When I googled it I saw it’s not recommended but I have been using CeraVe retinol and it didn’t irritate my skin. However right now my skin is extremely sensitive after it became allergic to a mud mask with essential oil in it. Everything causes itchiness even Aveeno Calm and Restore moisturizing cream that I just received.

@@Delifine I understand. I bought the Aveeno moisturizing cream that everyone was raving about, but it didn't moisturize my skin at all and irritated it a bit. Regarding your question on retinol, I don't have experience using them. To fight wrinkles, I use Avene lipid replenishing lotion with bakuchiol. It doesn't irritate. Bakuchiol is supposed to have retinol - like properties without being an actual retinol.
What else do you use for your skin that has been working or was a total failure?
I’m one of those people who have great results with Azeliac acid but it dries my skin and def stings at first. :/ tough to figure out just how often to apply without irritating my skin.
Can you make a video on why some people still get breakouts even though they’re using products like salicylic acid face wash, gel, even azelaic acid? I use it as required and it’s been 4-5 months and still get consistent breakouts every week. Eg, I use cerave cleanser every morning, then at night use salicylic acid face wash, then use SA gel, then the following night I use SA wash then azelaic acid + repeat. I use the cerave face cream too.
Topicals alone are not enough for many cases of acne. Check out my video on acne over 40, I explain more there
acne comes from under the skin, the body process cause breakout. thats why antibiotics, accutane medication is needed
I would use the SA cleanser in the am. And the normal cleanser in the pm. That way you’re spreading out the time your skin is contacting with SA
Probably due to compromised skin barrier, at least in my case. What helps me is using a peptides serum

The Ordinary Azelaic Acid is a "suspension", so more of a cream. I use this in the AM with the Timeless Vitamin C, which is very watery, so I always apply it early in my routine. I apply the azelaic acid right before moisturizer, after my other serums because it is the thickest in terms of consistency. Should I be worried about absorption here?
Hello everyone and Happy Monday Doc! I this past few days I started using Tret 0.05 and I just wanna ask if it safe for me to use Cerave Acne control cleanser and gel or the SA cleanser and cream for morning routine? Thanks just confused
Use the acne cleanser in the am

I've been using naturium's azelaic acid for a while and i love it! But i recently got pyunkang yul's nutrition cream and that combo burned my skin (i was using sukin calming night cream before that) so i wonder why my skin didn't like the new combo?
Loved this video. ❤️ thank you so much. X
I tried azelaic acid from the Ordinary and it stings and makes my face itchy. Wondering if its due to the formulation?
