  • @de132
    @de132 6 месяцев назад +30

The actual problem with the Coyotes is the amount of clowns who have owned this team. I'm okay with the NHL trying this market again in a few years, but they need a stable plan with an arena situation resolved.
Somehow this organization lost money on their lease in Glendale even if they were at 100% capacity.
Then they couldn't figure out who should own the team. Then the league owned the team. Then there was no arena property available. Then two more ownership changes.
My feelings on this is: This should've been resolved years ago one way or another. I would've preferred this team to stay in Arizona (specifically Scottsdale or North Phoenix), but it was WAY too late for that in 2024. This is a situation that should've been resolved in 2014 when it was Glendale, new property, or Seattle.
October 7, 2014 should've been the cutoff date.

Even players from Arizona on other teams, like Matthew Knies, have come out and said he's heartbroken to see the NHL leaving Arizona.

I work in architecture and I laugh out loud every time I hear these timelines being tossed around as if they're predestined. I've had tiny interior reno projects stretch on for double their intended schedule because of slow responses from the city, indecisive clients, material supply issues, etc. Compunding that to the scale of building a miniature city from scratch where you're going to have major utility disputes, potential ground remediation issues during excavation, who knows what else crop up? Good luck with your timeline.
This is why the Coyotes are leaving. You can't guarantee squat for a timeline when you don't even own any land to build anything on. Even if they win the auction, 5 years can easily turn into 7, 8, 9 years and nobody wants games being played out of Mullet for that long.

The team didn't pay bills on the arena. Elliott Friedman is now saying on his podcast that the Coyotes also had unpaid hotel bills. The ownership is negligent, they don't pay bills and they made embarrassed the league by having them play in a college stadium for two years. The ownership also treated the fans like complete garbage. Jay is correct to point out that the arena situation in Arizona was totally avoidable. If the owner had paid his bills, they would not have been kicked out their arena. Whether he did all this on purpose or by accident is besides to point. Meruelo is bad owner, no other way to see it, and the fact the NHL still wants to do business with him proves once again that they have zero standards for ownership integrity.

Jay does not always do hinself a lot of favors in these kinds of studio exchanges, but here he spoke with his facts very much to the fore and in a way that made clear both his empathy for the Coyotes' players, staffs and fans on the one hand AND his antipathy for and exasperation with the team's current owner, Mr. Merruolo, on the other. • @sampicano

Winnipeg waited 15 years for a new team (1996-2011)
I get that Phoenix is one of the top ten largest cities in America (10th - 4,845,832 population).
I also realize that Houston (5th - 7,149,642 population), and Atlanta (6th - 6,104,803 population) are larger than Phoenix and also don't have NHL teams - those are the cities in the South Phoenix is competing with to get an expansion team.
I personally feel a 2027 or 2028 date is impossible as of today.
    Phoenix has no arena.
    - The starting bid for land starts at $68.5 million (therefore, the closing bid will be MUCH higher)
The renderings proposed were for an area, practice facility, hotels, restaurants, a casino etc.
    - the price tag for the arena is approximately $500 million
    - the price tag for the entire district was approximately $3 billion
The parcel of land for auction - North of Loop 101 on border of Scottsdale Road has:
    - no existing infrastructure
    - no water rights
    - no sewage system built
    - no road access
Therefore the total cost to build will ACTUALLY be higher than $3 billion - you still need to build sewage systems, roads, and acquire water rights...those were not included in the $3 billion proposal.
Between 2013 and 2022 the Arizona Coyotes have lost more money than any other team in the NHL - $115.2 million in losses.
The Arizona Coyotes are a net loss team since 1997 - meaning the team overall LOST money over the past 28 years - they didn't generate money.
As of April 2024 Alex Muerelo's net worth was estimated at $2 billion.
    - land $68.5 million
    - arena $500 million
    - district $3 billion
    - PLUS YOU NEED ROADS, SEWAGE, WATER RIGHTS....so not $3 billion - actually quite more than $3 billion.....
    - plus you need to BUY a expansion team (probably $1 billion minimum)
The last NHL team to sell was the Ottawa Senators for $950 million - the Arizona Coyotes are allegedly being sold for $1.2 billion.
    So....$4,068,500,000
Four Billion, Sixty Eight Million, Five Hundred Thousand - would realistically not be enough money to build this district.
How is a team that lost $115.2 million dollars ever going to recoup those losses???
The team was overall at a net loss for 28 years - so realistically how many years would it take to recoup $3 billion?
One of the lower valued teams - Columbus generates about $30 million a year in profit.
    $30 million x 100 years = $3 Billion
    $30 million x 135 = $4,050,000,000
Still not enough to pay for the district and expansion team....
So Muerelo is NOT the answer.

It's embarrassing to see how many people don't understand how the NHL works. Blaming Gary Bettman is wrong, as it's highly likely that nothing he do s was his decision, and the more you get angry at him the better he is doing his job.
His job as commissioner is to be the mouth piece for the owners and to make them money and present their ideas. That way if he says something the masses don't like, it's not the owners taking the heat. But people talking like he has any real power and isn't just a puppet of the owners are naïve to the point of delusional.
The real focus of your anger should be at the owners as this was entirely orchestrated by them, every time Bettman said we are staying in Arizona, he was saying what the owners wanted. Every time he refused to put a team in Canada, he was saying what the owners wanted.
You get so angry demanding him to leave, your anger at him is exactly the reason he stays. The moment people call out the owners and, correctly, pin this on them, his position will be in trouble.

This is not a WIN WIN WIN . Other reports are already revealing that within the NHL there is little belief that Meruelo will be able to cobble together an arena within the timelines of this agreement. That means Arizona fans are likely not going to see NHL hockey again for at least 6 or 7 years, if ever. But Jay is missing the point as well, this team shouldn't have been moved. It should have had good owners that support the team that would have turned into a decent market like Nashville, Carolina or Dallas etc. Moving teams is the nuclear option, its not the 90s anymore.

If they had not burned bridges they could have tried to work out a short term deal with Glendale. Is it a good location? No, but it can hold the numbers that the NHLPA could not complain. The bridge was burned so bad that you notice it is never mentioned.

Glendale wanted the team to sign a 12yr lease to stay, and would've welcomed them with open arms if they had. Coyotes couldn't stay there because they never made money in Glendale, except for the first few years (ohh, shiny!).

@@pliskenmovie they were getting whiteouts during the 3 years the team was owned by the league. It is a terrible location but if the team is winning people make the drive. The problem was no owner since the NHL has put a winning team on the ice. Armstrong has the best chance. Utah is going to benefit from our loss.

wasn't the contract at Gila river, not renewed before there was an issue with payment? I still say the biggest problem here are the Arizona Politicians not the owner, not the NHL, and defiantly not the fans or team. if you live in Arizona, specifically Pheonix pay attention to who you vote for.

City of Glendale wanted them to sign a 20 year lease. The City of Glendale also put it out in the news that they were owed a million from the team, which was paid the next day I believe. City Councilman delivered a letter to the team to pack up and leave. I haven't been to WestGate since they moved to ASU. Still not sure why the residents of Tempe voted to keep a toxic dump rather than have a development with a NHL team. Utah is getting some very good young talent to build upon, we all hope they do very well.

Craig you are right on the mark. Why do people want to be upset when someone honestly makes money after they have spent lots of money to get something done. I also have praise for Gary Bettman, he gave every opportunity to the city, the owner, the State to keep a money machine of revenue for the city, and now intelligently is saying it's time to move on there is a better way. The public officials there should have talked to Winnipeg, to get an understanding of the hole that is left when you lose a Professional Team/League of world acclaim.

NHL/Bettman ripped the Jets from a hockey mad market like Winnipeg over an old arena. Put it in a place where for over 24 years they would have nothing but problems either having their own arena or competent ownership or both. Bettman and the NHL ownership pick the owners and have owned this team before. It is very much their fault that the state of the Yotes is where it is right now. This is would be the 2nd time the NHL has owned this franchise Craig, 2nd time! Sure only to quickly resell it still in their hands as it always has been in some form or another. I rest my case, you are apologizing for a joke league Craig who clearly has their pants down right now appeasing to a bad owner the they chose.

The best part of this story is we finally won't have to hear about all the problems in Arizona anymore, at least for the foreseeable future. Taxpayers shouldn't be on the hook to help bail out rich owners without either getting their money back or getting part ownership of the team, with a caveat that the owner has an option to purchase the taxpayers' portion of the team back at full market value. Down with corporate welfare. If the franchise won't stay afloat without that taxpayer subsidy, then it shouldn't be put there, regardless of the size of the market. Just because there are 10 million soccer fans in a city doesn't mean they'll support a hockey franchise there. The fanbase has to be interested enough to support the team, not just for the first 6 months of its existence but for a long timeframe (10+ years) with the numbers to back that up; otherwise, forget it. And speaking of forget it, is anyone else in disbelief that the NHL is considering putting a team in Atlanta for the 3rd time?

Believe it or not, Craig has actually swayed me a bit here... New, excited ownership and fan base gets an established team, (plus for Salt Lake) The players move to a market which will worship them, (plus for them) current ownership of the 'Yotes gets basically a $1B loan for 5 years until the NHL gets it back in expansion fees, (plus for the league).... the only loss I see is that the hard-core AZ hockey fans will have to wait 5 years until they get a new team... But they'll have a shiny new arena, and based on the new expansion draft rules, they can rape the rest of the teams for quality players and have a ready-made playoff team in the first year without having to actually build anytihing. (I'm looking at you, Vegas. 🤬)

    • @Yimvision
      @Yimvision 6 месяцев назад

I'm sure you had Vegas picked to win the division after the expansion draft even they were 200-1 to win the cup and every publication had them picked dead last. To say Vegas didn't build anything when they went from expansion draft to Stanley cup champs in 6 years is insane. Seattle had the same rules and already has missed the playoffs more than the Knights.
