well, the main reason actually to better combat mobile suit with thicker armor and sustain more rapid fire without overheating. the usage of new energy mag just because its has more energy than just usual slim mag.

Oh, the Jegan. One of the Federation's best and long lasting grunt suits. Too bad this was its fate, by being obsolete in front of the Crossbone Vanguard. The Federation should've had it retired earlier, so the Jegan wouldn't have had such a humiliating legacy.

They'll usually have the older stuff serve in low priority and rear echelon positions. The Frontier Colonies were not a priority posting and consequently had lots of older equipment like Jegans. They aren't giving an M4 carbine to a supply depot guar in the middle of nowhere USA, they're giving him an M16A2. I'd also say the Jegans legacy isn't really humiliating. I'd argue that serving for 3 decades in a timeline where other mobile suits have become obsolete barely within a year of their initial production because of arms races is pretty impressive.

In universe explanation is that the trend of MS development was to go smaller for increased mobility and ease of logistics. Real life explanation is that the Japanese economy was in a slump, and the executives had mandated to the production team to cut down costs on the toy side of things. So they made the in-universe MS smaller so that IRL they could make the models smaller and cheaper while maintaining the existing scaling and justifying less toy for the same price tag.

It’s easily writer bias. They could’ve shown the destruction caused by the Crossbone Vanguard’s invasion but for some reason they just don’t. It’s ok to do it to the Federation because they’re portrayed as the “good guys” and they want the “good guys” to look bad so that the writers look smart and complex. It’s a very tired UC trope and one of the reasons I can’t really stand to watch Gundam anymore. Everyone knows how evil the Federation is, so there isn’t any point in always portraying their pilots as incompetent. The writers just want to boil down the war themes to “Hey the antagonists are actually the good guys because the protagonist did something bad.”

I feel like this is a pretty predictable byproduct of a country that views itself as the victim of WW2 even though they were an aggressive imperialist power that committed some of the most heinous war crimes of the 20th century.
Another factor is these colonies were out of the way posting. EFFs were supposed to replace all their Jegan but they were still here in great number means very low priority in equipment and personnel. When we actually saw Main Fed fleets fought in Victory, we saw their pilots in older machines gave a way better fight
