What I've noticed with A24 productions is that they are an easy passage from mainstream to a more deep and psychological way of telling stories that helps people who are not accustomed to artistic movies or are afraid of more sophisticated art styles.
Miramax which you included in the video was literally an example of another studio that had the same type of draw. Oddly Disney who bought them is another example of a studio people used to go see movies from based on the studio's brand.
"Imagine 10 years ago watching for a studio, that'd be crazy." So I guess the 2000's with Paramount Vantage, Fox Searchlight, and Focus Features didn't happen? They rocked the scene in the 2000s much the same way A24 is perceived now. Newline Cinema and Orion before that of the 80's. Dimensions and Touchstone of the 90's.
The point being made about A24 isn't just that they've had a bunch of hit movies but that there is very deliberate purpose in keeping to overarching stylistic choices. I'd relate that to music labels, how we'd associate Sub Pop or 4AD with specific kinds of artist. I can't say I've ever felt that way about Focus, Touchstone or New Line. It's not about having a run of good movies, but of something tying them all together that you come to expect with some certainty.
No, people perceive A24 as some sort of a "auteur" force simply because of the marketing blitz they've put on, often times they simply acquire and distribute them once they are full made and finished. They premiere at a festival and A24 scoops in and buys it and slaps their logo on it. But even if they did produce them do you really think a studio like A24 would force true auteurs into putting in a "A24" signature stamp? No, they would just walk out. What the studio does is to give the filmmakers as much freedom as possible to make their true visions come true.
This right here, I was thinking the same thing, I think A24 is drawn more to that style of filmaking vs the other way around which is stll fantastic and refreshing. It like we put our trust in A24 to have back a quality movie
@@travisxpickle as I recall they were one of the first studios to jump to meeting the demands of the writers during the writers strike last year. not terribly surprising.
Exactly. They should be appreciated for basically the same reason New Hollywood producers were, but people are on their nuts so hard they barely give credit to the actual filmmakers.
@@travisxpickleThis. I would add on that their curated films are what people seek / desire these days with their touch on psychological and human elements, leading to their success!
Can you please add the CC option to show film titles as they appear on screen? I remember similar channels implementing it during the EveryFrameAPainting days and it's nice to have that option.
Agreed Neon releases some great films as well. Really there’s quite a few smaller outfits that specialize in good films. Meanwhile you have bigger stars complaining that there isn’t a market in Hollywood for a 3 million to 30 million dollar film from the big distributors. I would argue that there is a market, but they don’t want to pay a big name actor for that film. These days I stay away from almost products from the big companies as it’s almost always a waste of my money if I’m going to the theater. (I’ll just stream those movies from home) but I will make an effort for a “neon”, a24, blumhouse, or a few other companies as well. But it’s also not too hard to spot decent films, you’ll hear about them through the smaller festivals ect.
Very well made video. I have watched & loved many A24 movies, but didn't realize THAT was the common factor. Neither did i know about this phenomenon. Good to know.
I remember there being a time in the early 90s when I would get excited for certain studios. Orion, United Artists, Miramax, Bruckheimer Films, Dreamworks, Icon, MGM, and 20th Century Fox. Sometimes thats what got me to stay on HBO because the other option was to flip to the tv guide channel or find the physical tv guide booklet. Sometimes those wouldnt be helpful. Then the opening credits would get me keep me hooked or not.
I just see lots of Wong Kar Wai/Christopher Doyle style of lighting and mood. Even in “Moonlight” and “Everywhere” I spotted many frames and shots (especially the step printing sequence) that looked directly inspired by “In the Mood for Love”, “Fallen Angels”, and “Happy Together”.
Hi everyone ! I'm looking for the title of this movie ending with these two stones front of a canyon (picture at @4:26). Is it Everything Everywhere All at Once, I cannot remember ! Thank youuuu
I’m late to the party, I’ve been a fan this whole time and didn’t know it was a singular distribution company responsible for my favorite films of recent
Its cause its definitely AI. Almost certain its written by AI too. No one pronounces a24 as “eh, 24” except for computers that struggle to recreate human inflections
I think also that A24 films tend to stay with me long after the film. They are so striking and unanimously creative, it feels super detail oriented and created with passion instead of money in mind
Because they are made by different filmmakers with various creative approaches and the name of distribution company doesn't matter. It's quite hilarious and at the same time very depressing, how many people are thinking that A24 is the creator of all the movies they distribute.
I watched The Zone of Interest yesterday and it fits the vibe you're describing perfectly. It was so disturbing, that the light was so beautiful and simultaniously hinted at these horrors.
Is it really THAT expensive and hard to use real human narrators instead of these AI ones? These really aren't good enough yet. My ears are bleeding after 2 minutes of listening to this robotic crap.
Just discovered your channel! For years I've wanted to recreate the 90's look in music videos.....I wish I know what that look was called! Examples would be Milk Inc, "walk on Water" Len "steal my sunshine" and Aqua "Barbie Girl"
the whole video screams ai. the script definitely has way too many similarities to Vox' video on A24, the narration is done by a bot and the sound design is just horrible (what in the actual heck is this music playing in the background)
@@PurpleYoshiEgg dude each sentence has just wrong tone. I don’t know what else to say since it’s so blatantly obvious. I personally wouldn’t say it’s the pronunciation of A24 but literally the tone for the ending or beginning of each sentence. It’s also very suspicious how the voice never changes AT ALL. No inflection nothing. Nothing about this videos narration seems real
Not to be rude, but the listicle part of the video made negative amounts of sense. None of those numbered reasons are likely to produce any kind of similarity, in fact they are far more likely to produce differences.
The first movie I saw from A24 was Hot Summer Nights. It's such a beautiful film. I watched it 2/3 times and would still do so. The music, the atmosphere of the movie is like an evening of summer where we have a break from everything and just stroll the streets or ride it towards something unplanned.
I remember being excited to watch anything by HBO and Miramax back when they were putting out quality content. These days Netflix originals, especially their documentaries are an instant go-to.
I think it's key that they're a studio that (so far) have let filmmakers create a coherent artistic vision. Nothing feels designed by committee. And audiences respond to that, if given a chance to. Something similar happened with the Andor TV series. Disney had little confidence in it because it didn't feature any characters shoehorned in from the original Star Wars films, so they let Tony Gilroy just run with his artistic vision. The result is something that could easily, oddly, have fit right into the A24 catalogue. Hope we see a lot more of this. (Back in the day the Miramax logo usually signified a great film was about to begin. And today New Line Cinema can be pretty creative and daring.
Beau is Afraid looks nothing like Priscilla which looks nothing like Spring Breakers which looks nothing like The Lighthouse which looks nothing like Everything Everywhere All At Once which looks nothing like Moonlight which looks nothing like You Hurt My Feelings which looks nothing like The Zone of Interest which looks nothing like Dicks: The Musical. There's no such thing as an "A24" look because they're a distribution studio that happens to produce some of the films they release. Stop trying to push for an "A24" look, that diminishes the vastly different creatives that behind these films.
Fun fact. Many people arrange their dvd/bluray collections in alphabetical order. I arrange them by producer/distributor company, so yeah, I am one of those that in the past would recommend the movie as: it stars... And was made by.... So it gotta be good.
This is a great post - and despite focusing on a single studio and their recipe for success, it's a great primer - almost a Tips for Successful Movie-making 101, that anyone could utilize to their advantage! I already know I can bet on a satisfying experience when I watch a horror/thriller from Blumhouse ... now I know I'll be satisfied with Everything, Everywhere, All at Once if I see the A24 stamp - must be why I've loved all their productions!
My thoughts exactly. Even the storytelling is very selfsame. Not a creative, open studio at all. The fact they have many genres of films (terror, suspense, comedy, action) does not imply variety of filmmaking and artistic project at all. True differences run deeper than genre distinction.
Moonlight was not produced by A24 - the movie was produced by Pastel (Adele Romanski) - later on Plan B (Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner) got onboard - some more money were put in and the movie went back into post-production for some final touches - some of the financing was handled by A24 but not produced by them.
@@willy4819 Putting the money is called financier, not producer. Have you seen an A24 producer or rep to accept the academy award for "best film" for Moonlight? No, because the "best film" award is handed to the producer of the film. Big difference between a Producer and Executive Producer (a credit often given to financiers or representatives of the distribution company). There are Associate Producers, Line Producers, Co-Producers or Executive Producers, to name a few and none of them make you the producer of the film.
@@JerryVanSouth IMDB says many things. As an example: IMDB lists that the budget for Moonlight was 4 mil which is not true. It was actually 1.4. The acquisition price was 4 million. That is not a production budget. And that was stated by Jenkins in multiple interviews and Q&A prior to the Academy Awards. And if you would work in film and understand what IMDB is and what is it used for, maybe you would not have such a hard time navigating the informations presented / listed there. IMDB is not and was never the most reliable place to gather info about a project for film professionals. It's a good stop but not accurate at all. Cheers

Toni Collete's dialogue in the movie Hereditary (2018) by the film studio A24 was one of the best acting I've ever seen in my life. I was just mind blown she didn't even get an Oscar nod for that scene. Since then, I've been a fan of A24 movies. Then they produced "Everything, Everywhere, All At Once" and swept the Oscars. Just amazing what they could do on such small budget just simply by giving talented people the opportunity to be creative.
It’s not A24, it’s the directors and the cinematographers. It’s so annoying how big of a pedestal A24 has been put on. They put out great movies, but they aren’t behind the fucking camera..
I agree with you, but I think the appeal of A24 is that they have a reputation for being a studio that ALLOWS its artists to do what they want, and therefore allows these movies to be made.
You're missing the point... A24 is ACTUALLY LETTING THEIR CREATORS CREATE!!! They don't get in the way of the filmmakers the way other studios do, and that's why the company is blowing up the way it is... So yes they do deserve A LOT of credit for the way they handle the movies they distribute and produce.

Great video man ❤! This channel deserves a lot more subscribers & I think that future isn't far away 💪🏻! Keep pushing out solid content like this 🎉!
Thank you 🙏🙏
"Imagine 10 years ago watching for a studio, that'd be crazy." So I guess the 2000's with Paramount Vantage, Fox Searchlight, and Focus Features didn't happen? They rocked the scene in the 2000s much the same way A24 is perceived now. Newline Cinema and Orion before that of the 80's. Dimensions and Touchstone of the 90's.
Yeah, the person who made this video has no idea what they're talking about.
Carlco lol
The point being made about A24 isn't just that they've had a bunch of hit movies but that there is very deliberate purpose in keeping to overarching stylistic choices. I'd relate that to music labels, how we'd associate Sub Pop or 4AD with specific kinds of artist. I can't say I've ever felt that way about Focus, Touchstone or New Line. It's not about having a run of good movies, but of something tying them all together that you come to expect with some certainty.
its true.
Pixar.
More than anything, A24 are world class curators who respect the art of cinema and the filmmakers behind it. They get behind the best, simple as that.
I would add on that their curated films are what people seek / desire these days with their touch on psychological and human elements, leading to their success!
great video, thanks for the work !
Can you please add the CC option to show film titles as they appear on screen? I remember similar channels implementing it during the EveryFrameAPainting days and it's nice to have that option.
Paramount reference is absolutely bang on! "A24 is a stamp of approval" is BANG ON!
I love lot of movies come out from Neon as well. For 90’s, it was Miramax followed by Paramount indie film division, Fox Searchlight, Artisan Films.
This was hypnotically interesting. Thank you for making this breakdown of A24. Wow.
Very well made video.
I have watched & loved many A24 movies, but didn't realize THAT was the common factor. Neither did i know about this phenomenon. Good to know.
Well made? Lol. The voiceover is clearly AI, lazy as FUCK
I saw what you did in the thumbnail.. very primal
Sidney Sweeney is so incredibly hot, it's wonderful.
Do you know who the actress is and which A24 film it is?
@@Balem619 Sydney sweeney
Did I just watch a commercial?
Yes you did.
Lol
Well yes, but not for A24, but for their A24 LUTS lol
I remember there being a time in the early 90s when I would get excited for certain studios. Orion, United Artists, Miramax, Bruckheimer Films, Dreamworks, Icon, MGM, and 20th Century Fox. Sometimes thats what got me to stay on HBO because the other option was to flip to the tv guide channel or find the physical tv guide booklet. Sometimes those wouldnt be helpful. Then the opening credits would get me keep me hooked or not.
This is such a good LUT advertisement.
6:25 - Big Data - Dangerous (Oliver Remix)....The groove is real in that song. Great choice
Thanks man, I was looking for this beat for a couple minutes untill see your comment
00:10 I used to do this around early 2000s with New Line Cinema and Dreamworks, and ran away from anything by Focus Features (they came around 😅).
Yes it is
"Independent Fimmaking" caught my eye :) Great video and underscores why most of A24's films have become my favorite films over the last 10-12 years
4:10 💯
I’m late to the party, I’ve been a fan this whole time and didn’t know it was a singular distribution company responsible for my favorite films of recent
fantastic video really!!!
but i have a question: then where is the line that separates the director from a24?
Well done video. I had no idea who A24 even was before seeing this.
Is the speaker voice AI? The way it pronounces studio names and puts the stress weirdly
ive always liked a24 creative direction, really enjoyed the green knight
Idk but the story line and depth analysis to them in the films is beyond amazing!
Your voice is so soothing. It feels like I’m watching an episode of How it’s Made.
Its cause its definitely AI. Almost certain its written by AI too.
No one pronounces a24 as “eh, 24” except for computers that struggle to recreate human inflections
It’s an AI voice. It pronounces certain words and phrases very unnaturally. In particular, “A24”!
@@skogl8 is this an AI comment
@@LukasSchroederFilms probably!
is this an ai generated voice lol
Took me a minute to realize that lol
Midsomer and hereditary are certainly two of my favourite weird movies
I think also that A24 films tend to stay with me long after the film. They are so striking and unanimously creative, it feels super detail oriented and created with passion instead of money in mind
The thumbnail is So detailed and make my thing more steady thank you A24
Because they are made by different filmmakers with various creative approaches and the name of distribution company doesn't matter. It's quite hilarious and at the same time very depressing, how many people are thinking that A24 is the creator of all the movies they distribute.
That's also how it is with other studios/distributors.
Excellent video idea = easy watch! 👍 Also, good work on thumbnail. 🤝
Glad you like it!
Do you know who the actress is and which A24 film it is?
I watched The Zone of Interest yesterday and it fits the vibe you're describing perfectly. It was so disturbing, that the light was so beautiful and simultaniously hinted at these horrors.
Yet it's no A24
I did the same with Focus Feature movies. As a production company they had a style as well especially in the 2000's
Is it really THAT expensive and hard to use real human narrators instead of these AI ones? These really aren't good enough yet. My ears are bleeding after 2 minutes of listening to this robotic crap.
A24 is the only studio doing something different. That's why I enjoy many A24 movies.
sadly we all know that wont last for long everything loses its grip ill give A24 maximum 10 mroe years then they lose what makes theam A24
Not a studio btw
How to be ignorant in two sentences.
Not true.
By far not the only one
Interesting. May I ask what is the synth track playing in the background? It's great.
Just discovered your channel! For years I've wanted to recreate the 90's look in music videos.....I wish I know what that look was called! Examples would be Milk Inc, "walk on Water" Len "steal my sunshine" and Aqua "Barbie Girl"
I can't watch this video. I'm too distracted by the text to speech robot saying "A. TWENTY FOUR." weirdly every single time.
Trudat! ....and "Star WARS"....wtf 🙄
the whole video screams ai. the script definitely has way too many similarities to Vox' video on A24, the narration is done by a bot and the sound design is just horrible (what in the actual heck is this music playing in the background)
@@yeahfelix i don't think it's ai though. the way they pronounce "a24" is exactly like how my friend does it when he's infodumping on movies.
@@yeahfelix maybe you need better headphones because it isn't ai. i know people who literally speak like the video.
Not to be rude, but the listicle part of the video made negative amounts of sense. None of those numbered reasons are likely to produce any kind of similarity, in fact they are far more likely to produce differences.
I have seen a bunch of these and i can say - all are very immersive!
May I ask what your list would be if you were me, someone who doesn't record Infront of a camera but does audiobooks for audible and Urban writers?
A24 would hate this weird, AI VO'd video...
The comments indicate that people typed without watching the video properly.
honestly same.
what's the name of the soundtrack played at 0:52 - 0:54 ?
The first movie I saw from A24 was Hot Summer Nights. It's such a beautiful film. I watched it 2/3 times and would still do so. The music, the atmosphere of the movie is like an evening of summer where we have a break from everything and just stroll the streets or ride it towards something unplanned.
I remember being excited to watch anything by HBO and Miramax back when they were putting out quality content. These days Netflix originals, especially their documentaries are an instant go-to.
A24's whole aesthetic really is just "Gaspar Noe film with slightly more plot and slightly less sexual violence"
🤣
It’s not about a specific look it’s about a feel. The feeling of a movie showing you the plot not force feeding it to you.

If you'd watched the video, you'd know it kind of explained this...
Cope harder
Fun fact. Many people arrange their dvd/bluray collections in alphabetical order. I arrange them by producer/distributor company, so yeah, I am one of those that in the past would recommend the movie as: it stars... And was made by.... So it gotta be good.
I do that too because they look more neat in that order
What is the song and group of the 1st song in this video?
This is a great post - and despite focusing on a single studio and their recipe for success, it's a great primer - almost a Tips for Successful Movie-making 101, that anyone could utilize to their advantage! I already know I can bet on a satisfying experience when I watch a horror/thriller from Blumhouse ... now I know I'll be satisfied with Everything, Everywhere, All at Once if I see the A24 stamp - must be why I've loved all their productions!
This was time well spent. Wonderful Narration.
0:52 what song is this Shazam can’t pick it up ❤️
your videos are like a year 10 informative writing assignment, but as a job.
Blumhouse is my go-to studio.
i like a24 because their response to the strikes honestly
#1 Artistic Vision is a contradiction. Distinct artistic visions would lead to movies that differ in their looks, not ones that share an aesthetic.
My thoughts exactly. Even the storytelling is very selfsame. Not a creative, open studio at all. The fact they have many genres of films (terror, suspense, comedy, action) does not imply variety of filmmaking and artistic project at all. True differences run deeper than genre distinction.
very well explained
Everything Everywhere All At Once is one of my favorite movies and I became a Stan of it when I was brought to tear at the theater.
Well, IMDB says otherwise but I think you know better than them for sure …
Well putting in money into something makes you a producer
Cheers
@@user-rm2wj9gj3l they still have the word “producer” in the credit I’m not saying he’s the actual producer as you say they accept the award or something but they get the credit because they put in money.
You forgot to mention it was the only studio not mentioned in the writer/actor strike. Let me correct myself, it was mention as an example of fair pay throughout the production and providing creative freedom to writers and directors. Maybe one day corporate greed will get to them and rot the entire thing
No it's just an independent studio
I've only recently heard of A24 from Hideo Kojima. Apparently, they will be the ones making the Death Stranding movie.
Very insightful about the art of storytelling via film.
The studio doesn’t dictate the look of the film. That is up to the director/ cinematographer.
then how does studio ghibli produce consistent bangers and you know exactly their aesthetic look?
@@PurpleYoshiEgg a24 films don’t have a look lol studio ghibli uses the same artist for their films lol it’s not the studio who creates the look it’s the team behind it…..I go to film school.

CAROLCO was a sign of a good movie. Carolco produced The first two Rambo movies, first two Terminator movies, Totall Recall, Basic Instinct, Universal Soldier, Stargate, Red Heat, Jacob's Ladder, Cliffhanger, Showgirls. I don't think that A24 will have such iconic movies and that caliber stars.

"If it has neon, it's a24" lol
A24 is not single person, it's consist of people
I agree with you, but I think the appeal of A24 is that they have a reputation for being a studio that ALLOWS its artists to do what they want, and therefore allows these movies to be made.
if i see the a24 stamp, i know its an independent film.
You're missing the point... A24 is ACTUALLY LETTING THEIR CREATORS CREATE!!! They don't get in the way of the filmmakers the way other studios do, and that's why the company is blowing up the way it is... So yes they do deserve A LOT of credit for the way they handle the movies they distribute and produce.
studios can have consistency, though. like studio ghibli for its beautiful art, and disney for its soulless cashgrab remakes.
