My First Swap | 2JZ FD RX7 | Over a Decade Old!

- 2022 NOTE - If you came over from SLG welcome to my personal channel! I uploaded a few videos from 06-08 and this was one of them! Over time, maybe I'll make a few more public!
This swap was done in my moms back yard with VERY basic tools, no truck (obviously) and somehow, it turned out great!
Car was built by me over 6 months. Tuned by Brad Brooks (Brookstuned.com) Car was having boost issues aswell as blowing out spark due to lack of a DLI at the time of the dyno but the issues have since been resolved! Thanks to everyone who helped with the build! Brad Brooks, Sean + Everyone at Tech2 Motorsports, IAG Performance, Mark, Dan, Amanda for ruining clothes to help me + putting up with my addiction and everyone else!

Sick video man. I work in a shop that specializes in jz engines, so I’m definitely familiar with building a 2j in the modern era. But I’m a pretty young guy and it’s so cool to see the same thing being done years and years ago. (Obviously i know it’s been happening for decades.) it’s always been so interesting to me how people used to build cars in the past and what compromises had to be made compared to today when you can pretty much solve any issue by throwing money at it.

Ive had experience with both rotaries and basically all the Toyota engines and I like the 2jz alot. Th rotaries are nice don't get me wrong but they do have seal problems often if they aren't properly cared for and the apex seals piss me off. I have the tools to build a 2jz in my yard but I don't want to pay to have a 13b ported or machined for 3mm apex seals. That's how i justify why I like the 2j more. Plus I've owned 2 supras.

That's true i suppose, but when you build a good rotary engine like the 20b and it runs really great, it's an amazing engine, but it needs alot of maintance unlike other engines, you need to change apex seals and so forth.
and a strip of 20 gauge metal. you need a good welder because you dont want the welds to break off and the diff will be garbage.

Love the car and the work u put in it but when you dumped the clutch for the burn out, the whole engine wobbled so perhaps stiffer engine and gearbox mounts?

nice build, did u buy the kit from 2jzswap? i have a 99' fortune rx7 and just went through my 2nd rotary engine, considering 1jz but don't know what to do about my bonnet , did u have any problems with the swap?
DAMN me and my friend were talking about a build just like this and u sir have given me hope how much did this hole build cost
What Gearbox Did you use the r154 5 speed or a 6 speed 1 ? if the 5 speed was it and oem fit with the 2jz? and if 6 speed how did you put it into the rx7 thanks

great build i'd really like to see the specs comparing a 2jz rx7 and a ls1 rx7 (both engines bone stock to factory standards)

@LeeC i understand y u did it, i just went through my 1st rotary in my 94 fd, if i had the money i would do this swap, but for now another throw another 13b in for 70k mile while i save up so, next i can make this happen lol

2Jz is a supra engine? correct? If so that's a better move than dropping in the Ls1 IMO

i'm a true 'rotor' head. i think this looks and sounds nice anyways. ++ for the build quality and and the fact you didn't use an ls1. as for nigbeats.... errrr i think i'm pretty safe to say that he doesn't represent the rotor community at all. besides. this guy will be laughing when he's put those cams in there. that turbo sounds like it could be squeezed a little harder for sure!

It's a 2JZ not a 13b JZ's make torque too
Does this swap affect the handling of the car?
The rx7 has almost 50/50 wright proportion. With the rotary engine. With a heavy 2jz in the front end yes the handling and balance that the car once had is now gone. And will drive like a nose heavy car.

@LeeC I drive a WS6, I've had an 03 cobra, a 92' Z28, just traded in my 05' STi for my Trans Am about 9 months ago, and I plan on trading my WS6 in and getting a FD. I have had more cars, but these are all the fast ones. I have had over 10 cars since I was 16. I don't mean to come off sounding like a douche but as many of the you tube trolls can see, I tend to do just that.

@NIGBEATS 13b is unreliable and just can't take the beating a 2jz can. I can understand his decision, and in my opinion, he was 100% right in swapping.
@JZ-GTE is too heavy for the RX-7.
It's killing the handling with 100% more heavy iron at the front-axle
I agree that this is a cool ride... But a rx7 without the rotary engine is not a rx7

not hard at all.. its just really annoying because it skips alot when just driving at low speeds around town.. but if i feel like drifting off the track, then i can.. its not a big deal at all and doesn't really affect normal driving.. but if your trying to do autocross and do fast griping turns, it understeers.. but hey, kick the clutch and drift.
i would recommend it over an LSD just because its FREE.. it doesn't kill your tires THAT much because your not actually drifting everywhere you go

@dstaines1992 If its a toyota platform then yes, it would be an honor. I have thought about buying an old toyota pick-up and swapping a 2JZ into it, then turning it into a dirt devil (ie. baja suspension setup). But what is the point of putting a toyota motor in to a mazda? It makes about as much sense as me putting the Iron Lung from the 03-04 cobras into my WS6. Its blasphemous, and a crime against nature. Why not just get a supra and lighten it up?

My point is; Mazda==13b rotary, Toyota=2JZ, Mazda=\=2JZ. If you want a light car with a 2JZ, get a supra and lighten it up, or buy an lighter toyota/lexus model and drop it in. I own a WS6 but I can't stand when I see a RX7 of any generation with an LS1 in it. I am not a hater of tuning or modding, on the contrary, I am a lover of cars and don't like when somebody does something stupid, like putting an engine of a different make into a car that can do the same with a correct motor platform...

Shame madza would be disappointed to know their rx7 owners are putting different engine in them. Think how they spent so much time tuning that car to perform the way that it does. Mainly because of the super light weight rotary engine.

@robo3060 real men drive rotors???ARE YOU FUCKING JOKING ME?As for peters 20b i wonder how much money he has put in that car to get it to 700hp and how many time he has had to rebuild it?And im sure he don't drive it much on the streets because of the port job,it wont idle and has no low end power....i have a Lexus SC300 with a 2JZGE with bolt on turbo,exhaust and injectors @14psi that's running 474hp to the wheels and i still get 22mpg....And i have a FD that im doing a 2jz swap on right now...

all these comments from hardcore rotards make me laugh, you lot probably dont even own a fuckin rotary. Its easy to critisize when you dont live with one- there a fuckin nightmare. Their good when they are new and standard, when they get old and people start squeezing stupid amounts of power from them their fucking useless. Good peice of enginering but it belongs in a museum.
