Fuji jpegs are pretty amazing. I typically shoot Raw+JPG, and bring both into LR. At least half of the time, I’m happy with the JPEG and may only need a minor tweak. But I have the Raw if needed. That shot of Bill was a perfect example of why having the Raw was handy because you couldn’t recover the highlights from the jpeg. Thanks for the video!
Thanks David! I usually shoot Raw plus Jpg for almost everything I do except the work I do for the paper. I only shoot jpgs for them because it’s faster. I find that classic chrome +2 color gives me a realistic look to the images with not much manipulation in PS. My workflow for the paper is way different than it is for everything else I do.
Great video Kirk. I always shoot Jpeg + Raw at the same time and i like to work my raw files in photoshop. The result with jpeg on the fujifilm is already great...but when you want to put your own touch...raw is the way to go.
Hi Alain. Im usually the same way but the jpgs are more of a backup. But when I'm doing a news assignment its all jpg.
I shoot mostly RAW on my X-T4, especially when doing landscapes or portraits. But I like shooting jpg for family events, birthdays, grandkids, etc. I've never tried in camera raw to jpg conversion, but will definitely try it. Thanks!
Give it a try, fun to be able to knock out a jpg once in awhile straight out of the camera.
Great video. I found a fun process....? Shoot in Raw, dial in Fujifilm effects found in lightroom or capture one, also, perhaps try auto WB and adjust ?? Sync images. Pop into PS scripts and batch convert/copy to Jpegs.
Hi Alan I do something similar but do not output to PS I just out put in LR.
Hi Kirk, using the DR settings really help when shooting high contrast scenes in Jpegs. As well as using the histogram I use the live highlight alert to show me when highlights are being blown so I can adjust the DR setting accordingly. When using the DR settings the effects of it are reflected in both the histogram and the live view highlight warning in the EVF .
Thanks , cheers Ian.
Ian yes you have a good point there and they do make a world of difference. Thanks for bringing that up!
Thanks Kirk. Just a side note .... the highlights shadows settings have an effect upon the histogram. It is also worth looking what happens to the histogram when changing the film simulation. For example velvia compared to pro neg standard . Cheers Ian.
Good idea!
Nice work Kirk.
Many thanks Tony.
Excellent video, thanks. As an old printer, after 40 years of messing with other peoples photos, both in darkroom and digital aldus/adobe, i am totally done with tweeking everything after its shot. I love my fuji jpgs and only shoot fine/raw if its something important. My photos are seldom that important anymore. I have found a workflow that works for me now, its pixelmator pro on the ipad. It does a great job of perking my jpgs up a bit. Your comments are right on though. The presence of photoshop totally changed the world of photography. Its no longer just important to master your camera, you have to be a master of your post software too. I am seriously considering a tour back into film. I know its probably a lot like going back to wooden clubs for golf, but it will be an adventure. I look forward to your videos, keep it up.
Scott that's great that you have found a workflow on your iPad that works for you. I find myself wanting to go back to film as well and will be doing some here and there for this channel.
I've gotten much better at using the histogram when shooting and have been really impressed with the jpegs I'm getting out of my XT - 4.
Ricky the histogram is a great tool. I have it on my screen at all times but more for when I'm shooting Raw than jpg. I have found that underexposing my jpgs works for me.
Kirk, I was watching another RUclips video and they ranked the camera manufactures as follows: Canon, Sony, and Nikon. Where do think Fuji fits in this mix? I keep hearing a lot of photographers are switching to Fuji but they are seldom mentioned when discussing the “top” camera companies. In your opinion, why is that?
Hi Lynn, They go by camera sales numbers. Canon and Sony are the big names in full frame cameras. Sony has a good line of APS-C cameras but the lenses for them are terrible. Canon is coming on strong with great products and super lenses. Nikon is a non starter they will soon be out of business or bought by someone. Fuji has a strong approach with APS-C cameras and superior lenses for aps-c they are not mentioned in the same breath because their camera sales are not in the same ball park as the behemoths Canon and Sony. Neither of those brands do anything close to what Fujifilm cameras can do in terms of jpgs. Fuji also has a terrific line of 100 mp medium format cameras that are possibly the smallest medium format cameras with ibis made.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Thanks!
Does the XT-3 have the conversion capability? Also I heard you don’t have to do as much post processing with Fuji cameras. Is that true?
Hi Lynn, Yes the X-T3 and all Fuji cameras have the ability to convert raw images into jpg's. If you are shooting jpgs you dont have to do much post processing.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Thank you! I always appreciate your videos and your knowledge!
Enjoyed the lesson, but you really need to find better looking subjects!!!! 😂
Im sure you know pretty much everything I mentioned. the subject was at least standing still.
