    You & Pal2tech have made shooting on my XT-5 much more understandable. Thank you

    To be honest didn’t even know I had a digital TC on our X-H2…..had the 1.4 TC on our 100-400 lens this afternoon and it’s after 3 years of owning still a great combination.

    Hi Kirk, Bill from Newburyport here. Great video as I was wondering how the digital tc compared to the 1.4tc. I'm still clicking away with my X-T3. I then bought the 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 (gorgeous capable lens) and then the 1.4tc. Incredible reach but the 100-400mm is a beast (at least for me) I added a 75-300mm f4-5.6 (also a great lens) mostly for travel reasons. So if you're reading this out there, here's what happened. I started using the 75-300mm with and without the 1.4tc. The total weight of the 75-300 (1.3 lb) and the 1.4tc (4.6ounces) is under 2 lbs. The 100-400mm is 3.03 lb and almost 3.5 lbs with the 1.4tc. If my math is correct the total reach is 210-630mm on the 75-300+1.4tc and if you are on a tight budget the two of them cost less than the 100-400mm even when it is $400 off. Less weight and a little less $$.

      Bill - absolutely! I carry the 70-300 in my bag all the time. If I need the extra reach I’ll click in the 1.4 TC on the X-T5 without worry. The only problem is if shooting in raw LR does not show the crop. So this trick is only good in jpg. But the TC 1.4 is great to have and on the 70-300 is waaay lighter than the 100-400.

    Appreciate the video Kirk. I always learn something new. I've used my TC 1.4 on occasion but usually I have enough reach with my XF 100-400. But I can see this being particularly handy when traveling lighter with the XF 70-300 . To be honest, I didn't even know the XT5 had a built in digital teleconverter so that's always an option if I'm even more pressed for space.

    Hi Kirk, I look at it this way. The IQ setting in my XT5 allows me to choose the file size, L, M or S and this is what changes when I press for Digital Zoom, I have the front button assigned for this function. In this way I can walk around with my 23mm and add 40% at the touch of a button. Yes, it takes me from a large file to a medium but it’s great for composition and, IMHO, that makes it a whole lot of fun because you don’t have to switch lenses. I love it!!

      I have set up one of my custom settings just for sports. I assigned the top button above the menu button to scroll through the digital tele converter. For the other custom settings I have them shut off.

    Great video! I think the XF 2x TC WR Teleconverter is great when you want to photograph something and stay as far away as possible from the subject, whatever the reason. We're not talking about art photos here, perhaps more about documentary photos. The image quality does not need to be perfect in such use cases.

    I was quite a fan of the Olympus m4/3 1.4x with 300mm prime for birding years ago. These days I don't often bother with TCs because I use Gigapixel AI for scaling up, which prints indistinguishable from using a TC. I have 3 levels of optical crop - I use Canon EF glass on the R7 with the Canon speed booster most of the time for the extra stop of light, then the regular adapter for standard APS-C 1.6x, then the TC 1.4 for birding. Having a 27-119mm F2.8 constant zoom with in-body corrections is fun, so is 113-454mm F3.2-3.5 😁

      Mark - The Fuji system is tough for sports with the 50-140 so I have a button set up to give me instant access to the TC for inside sports

    Having rewatched the part where you use both I see it can be done. Whilst I love my 100-400 lens it is quite heavy. If the 50-140 plus TC plus DRC weighs less but gives you 417 mm of reach then it might be worthwhile swapping as I’m happy at 400mm and haven’t used it with the TC that much 😊

    Great idea! I have used my TC1.4 with my 100-400 but haven’t tried the in menu option YET! Watch this space…. I also want to see what happens when both are used, if that is even possible (perhaps one will be greyed out?). Thankyou for the inspiration Kirk 🍷🍷🍷

    It would be really interesting to see this 1.4 TC combined with the 150-600mm or 80mm macro on a 40mp body. I have both lenses and the 2x TC i have is such a drastic quality loss in both contrast and detail it's worse than cropping both on the 150-600 and 80mm macro.

    • @KirkWilliamsonphotography
      @KirkWilliamsonphotography  7 месяцев назад +1

      I do t have either of those lenses. I will never use a 2.0 TC because they are usually terrible as you say and the two stop loss in light is a no go for me!

    Nice video Kirk. Are you excited for the Fuji x100vi? Seems like a great camera to carry around for trips / street photography

      @KirkWilliamsonphotography  9 месяцев назад +1

      If I had a choice of only one Fuji camera (because I had a full kit of some other brand) the X100Vl would be it. But since I have all the Fuji gear I need I can replicate that setup pretty easily. X-T5 23 f2. It looks like a great camera to have for just what you say - travel / street photography.

    Great video. I have a 50-140 that I use with my X-T3 to shoot my son’s high school soccer games. It’s not long enough and I’m trying to decide between getting the 1.4 teleconverter vs the 70-300. What are your thoughts? I’ve used the 100-400 which is great for the far end of the field but too long for near side. Thank you and love your channel.

      Hi Michael, I use the 100-400 for soccer! Hands down better than the 50-140 and the 1.4 TC. The 70-300 does not do well focusing while zooming but can be a good choice if you are careful focusing.

      @@KirkWilliamsonphotography Thank you! I’d heard that a firmware update earlier this year resolved the focusing issues on the 70-300. I don’t know if that’s true or not. I will continue using the 100-400 for this season. What AF-C custom setting do you find works best for soccer? I go between custom 2 and 5. I’m still figuring it out though. I enjoy your channel and content.

  • @jeffellis662

    What you neglected to say the digital TC only affects JPG’s and for RAW images Fuji doesn’t even pass Lightroom the crop info. Unlike if you are shooting 4x5 RAW+JPG the images come in with the crop applied and you can change to larger if you feel like it.
