It's interesting how the creators of Bacta, a stronger healing liquid than Kolto, were much more open about how Bacta worked than the Selkath were with Kolto.
Perhaps the religious aspects of the Progenitor created an insular belief system, like "We Selkath were chosen to use the kolto wisely" or some such. If the Star map is Rakata force-attuned tech, then perhaps kolto might be "Force-bearing matter" or a variant of midichlorians?
@@supercellodude That is true, the force does affect individuals in strange ways. Even those who have little to no force sensitivity are affected by it in strange ways.
I think one of the major reasons that Manaan able to go back to some relevance during the Clone Wars was because Thyferra seceded and join the CIS leaving the Republic to explore other options for medical supplies like third party bacta vendors, the bota of Drongar and of course kolto.
There's a theory it used to be more potent but it started becoming less so as the Star map healed itself cause that healing was what was causing the kolto
For such a life saving fluid it was, no one would ever expect bacta to have a horrible effect like this... RIP to the Selkath species of Manaan. May they sleep peacefully with the fishes 🐟
The Bacta Wars was the first star wars I ever bought with my own allowance money when I was a little kid in 96. I had other other books before that but my parents always bought them for me. So I'd love a video on the planet that makes bacta.
In this book, and possibly in the Krytos Trap (bk. 3), a Vratix states that originally, the bacta trade was widespread, not limited entirely to Thyferra.
If I was a businessman I would buy a large amount Kolto, a PCL 27, and hundreds of cloning tanks and mass produce the fluid. I might add spices to improve effectiveness and then sell it to backwater worlds at a price cheaper than bacta. Controlling production and distribution would allow me to make a ridiculous profit. I’m surprised Lando never thought of it.

All of this talk about joining the Republic and the Clones Wars made me wonder about what are the benefits of joining the Republic in the first place. Sure, the Selkath did this to themselves. But when it come to the other worlds, their reasons to leave during the Clones Wars are legitimate due to the oppression and mistreatments by the Republic. Plus, by the time of the Clones Wars, we only heard about the majority of the planets in the Mid and the Outer Rims wanted to leave the Republic again and again. So what are the benefits of joining the Republic anyway?
@@lerneanlion The "Republic" is pretty Apathetic and Incompetent in most time periods let's be fair. It is no surprise how often and how easily systems and planets were willing to go neutral or change sides from it.
It depends on the period you're talking about. In the early millennia of the republic's formation, where like half the known galaxy had yet to even be discovered by the republic, & most definitely when the Siths were still an army, the republic had been much more sincere & involved in their dealings. Joining the republic at that period really did get a better deal at protection, other than the obvious benefit of getting way larger access to the galaxy for trade & stuff. That was back then, of course. We all know what the republic had been like for the past several hundreds of years before Palpatine came into picture.
Great video on one of my favorite designed species but I'm curious why use so much clone wars era imagery (specifically all the clones and droids) in an old republic era topic? Looking forward to a video on the Vratix!
Also let me add some things. Like iron replacing bronze on our world, bacta initially was a weaker, but more available product. Plus, since is a synthetic product, it could be easily refined and improved. There was attempts to replicate kolto in laboratory, but there was never any results. Kolto also started to lose effectiveness. Could still heal, but was weaker than a few decades before. It is assumed was the result of overharvesting, tgat led the world to produce aweaker substance to support the excess of demand. By that time, however, bacta was already a powerful healing agent, and most labs could safely replicate it. By the time of the clone wars, kolto was very effective once more. However, was expensive, since was a natural profuct from a single world. The army was relting on bacta for centuries, and it was easily accessible, so only magisters and naturalists were interested in it. By the Galactic Empire era, Manaan was invaded, enslaved, and converted on a resort for the rich. However, kolto was harvested heavily once more, and sold cheaply to the masses, until the reserves depleted. Without any reason to stay there, the Empire abandoned manaan, leaving the people in poverty. Would take decades for the kolto supplies to recover, but by then Manaan was forgotten and isolated.
I don't know, I think Taris fits that bill. Really hate condescending, stagnant, and uncaring city planets. Plus, the ocean of Manaan sure is pretty to look at, even in a 18+ year old game.

A pity. They would have been more sympathetic had they sided with the Republic in the Clone Wars. Even more so had they either stayed neutral or sided with the Rebels during the Dark Times. Oh, yes, please do the history of bacta.
Always wondered what happened to the Selkath after the Jedi Civil War. I get now why Dooku said that the Selkath used to be a mighty race, and they had since fallen from their former glory and prestige
I considered Bacta to be like stem cells in our world. I still say we need to fund Stem Cell Research. Read about it enough and you'll realize no baby murder required. Can safely extract them from healthy adults as well.
Just think about it, if someone discovered some new form of "wonder medicin" that would utherly replace fx. penicillin, it would pretty much spell the downfall of producers of the "old" product.
Curiously, some sources say that kolto is actually better than bacta at dealing with certain injuries and illnesses, but bacta supplanted it by being more readily available and better for more things
I heard one of the reasons kolto could still be marketed is the fact it was hypoalergic. There are races that require different types of bacta because of allergic reactions to the mix, whereas kolto could be administered to nearly everyone. Kolto had peaks. If was too harvested, the source would produce a weaker version, and would take time to recover. On the other hand, bacta could be synthetized in any laboratory with all the materials, and it would stay consistent as long as the formula was followed. Kolto started as the best, but bacta was more acessible, and soon took the throne and was improved enough to be better in general than kolto.
