Car Week with James Engelsman - The Carmudgeon Show with Cammisa and Derek from ISSIMI Ep. 66

- Опубликовано: 28 авг 2022
- This week, special guest James Engelsman of Throttle House joins the show to unpack the many happenings of this year’s Monterey Car Week, the center of all things automotive once a year. It’s James’ first car week experience, one which included multiple manufacture reveals, seas of interesting cars from pre-war to Pagani, and the occasional high five between Christian Von Koenigsegg and Gordon Murray.
In a discussion beginning with pre-war cars, Jason, Derek, and James discuss various driving experiences that overpromise and under-deliver (and vice-versa). The centerpiece of frustration revolves mostly around the original Acura NSX, a car Jason says promised looks over actual delivered performance.
Jason and James also cover their lightspeed hot lap around Laguna Seca in an 1100 horsepower Lucid Air Sapphire, piloted by none other than Top Gear’s original tame racing driver, Ben Collins (aka The Stig).
All this and more, brought to you by the Hagerty Podcast Network.

James is perhaps the best kind of guest to have for a Carmudgen episode. Witty verbois car enthusiast with a wide span of perspectives for such a modest time in the game. His humor as well differs enough from Hyphen and Jason yet works well with em. A bunch of hullabaloo to say entertaining episode guys
Thanks!
Yes 👌🏼
That's a _really_ good and considered observation. 👏🙂
i know Thomas probably couldn't make it but i think the dynamic of James & Thomas paired with Derek & Jason would make for an even better show than this great episode! hope to see it someday
YES!! it finally happened. Throttle house is killin the car RUclips game. Glad to see James on the pod.
Gotta love the "power of editing" and the digital clock changing time all over the place. Love you guys! Keep up the good work!
Was laughing watching the random switch between 9 and 10am tines 😂
Recording the intro after the show confused me for a minute. I guess thats why studios dont normally have clocks.
Heh, only for the intro. The rest is played in real time!
@@JasonCammisa i discovered you and your older reviews when in the big Melbourne lockdown in 2020 in Australia. The carmudgeon show and your videos really helped through some though times. Your new hagerty series are great.. so frustrating that guys like you DTS the Carfection crew can't get the audience that a bunch of vloggers talking about values, coloured wraps and un-analytical "reviews" pull... but here's hoping that the good word spreads.
@@michaelking6596 Hey, and thank you! Glad we helped you through it. I'm not frustrated at all; I'm glad to have an audience of people who appreciate what we do; whether that's 500 people or 5 million.
Carmudgeon and Throttle House. The best of the car internet at the same time. Love it. Although I can see why Thomas isn’t there. Only so many episodes can be about only BMWs.
Jason needs to do an ENTIRE episode talking like Jeremy Clarkson. Will they get sued if they do the Intro with the TG music? Can you do it anyways?
Ah, we'll just do the original Allman Brothers song.... and then get sued by them!
I make heavy metal cover version for you
Also one of the carmudgeon jingle
J - It’s just be Dickey betts suing you, and nobody respects him, so go for it!!!
"AND I'M JAMES!!"
Who else comes here everyday to see if the new podcast has been released?
I love hearing you guys and laugh every monday buuuut keep waiting for the Ferdinand Piëch episode! 🤣🤣🤣
Haha stiiiiilll working on it!
Totally agree on becoming de-sensitized to all the incredible cars at MCW. I had a 720S and SF90 drive past and I didn't really think twice. But then a Land Rover Discovery II drove past and I was like "Nice!". It really shows just how many insanely expensive cars are driving around there.
Expensive and cool draw different eyes, especially when everything is expensive
6 seconds into the video, and i already spat out my coffee. 0:06 AND I'M JAMES!!!
You are important to me and other poor man enthusiasts who love cars and learn more from you than any other podcast. Thank you for your content!
Thank you!
20:42 oh my god YES! I can't comprehend why nobody talks about the RUF SCR, it's such a cool car and I can't wait to hear what Derek has to say about it.
Definitely need more carmudgeon and throttle house collaborations, this was quite a fun episode.
MCU take notes!! This is the biggest crossover ever!
Having James was great cuz it made Jason and Derek explain their perspectives and experiences more than they usually would alone. One of the best episodes in a long time
Always the best show!
It's amazing listening to people with such different opinions still talk respectfully!
Amazing to hear grown ass men able to listen and compose cognitive thoughts that are intelligent and take turns to create a conversation. Jason and hyphen are excellent and todays show was even more so ... respectful and interesting and listening to well versed people is such a joy.
The leftie socialist arrogant and disrespectful drivel that populates 95 percent of tv and youtube gets very sad and old. People with a 61 IQ talk the loudest in every tv show.
So thankful to let my brain listen to adults for a change. Well done.
Fascinating discussion, such a pleasure to hear 3 fellas genuinely passionate about something giving their perspectives
Great show, guys, thanks
OMG what a lovely crossover episode!
a minute in and James looks like he's gonna three wheel hard. that's what I wonder about guests on the Carmudgeon show lol
remains to be seen but man these throttlehaus guys are everywhere....I like to see it!
Edit: Worlds are colliding by 20 minutes in lol
Eh, well James isn’t a Carmudgen yet, he likes good cars for being good. Honestly though, he’s probably a better voice for us who need our cars to be practical even if they’re enthusiast cars.
@@nathanchildress5596 To add to my previous comment (and other people have said it in the comments aswell)
With the inclusion of James in this episode, it reminded me a lot of what I found so special (and still do) when I first discovered the show. Don't think he needs to become more of a Carmudgeon when he's pretty philosophically aligned to some degree (GT86, Miata>F-Type) but he certainly....
Maybe call it an occupational hazard like Jason "called him out" (poking fun at that, I'm not being serious with that wording lol) for being a journalist with the NSX that he maybe doesn't have the two sides to him that Cammisa seems to have; the enthusiast hat and the journalist hat, but it definitely grounded the podcast back to earth in an interesting way.
I'd say he's closer to being a Carmudgeon more than he is not which is surprising considering how mainstream ThrottleHaus is and made him a great first guest.
@@Petrospect That's fair enough. From what I understand it was Thomas who wanted to make car content, and is a pretty good driver, but wasn't well versed in making films. James reached out and was able to guide the channel to the level it's at now. So he's definitely more of a casual enthusiast, but so long as his perspective is true I think there's room for that.
Great show as always
By your definition, a Pontiac Fiero is a great car. The constant fear that it could catch on fire at any moment definitely delivers an experience.
Oh nice I love James Englishman
OK I was against having guests, but I admit I was wrong AF. Great Show. Good job Journalist James.
Well THIS is an unexpected but delightful surprise!
Yee, this is Lit🔥! Just woke up to this!
Omg I’m so excited
More of these 🙏
Great stories and yes the 288GTO has always been my favorite Ferrari since I was 15 and had a grasp on cars. Before it was the F40 & F50 and I still like them but mot as much.
Very, very good...!
Thanks for the invite guys, ill jump jump in my plane ahahahahah 👌
Also saw that Ferrari Venice, that thing blew my mind.
We need James back and get Thomas is in too!
On annoying sportscar, I really think you guys should have brought Evora 400/Evora GT at Supra/Z icons video.... I've driven all three car (well 370z not new z) and felt like Evora 400/GT is the car that combines both aspect of Z and Supra A91 but adds more feel, more suspension compliance and better limit dynamics while having similar power... maybe lotus Corp and media is saving that for Emira comparison...?
Gordon Murray also said Evora is best handling/comfort compromise of modern era... just fiy... 😂
I don't think that would have been a good idea. The difference in driving quality from something like a supra which is essentially a shortened rwd 3 series to something like an evora would be impossible to bridge. The Evora 400 (which I drove) had far more steering feel than even a 992 gt3. The difference in steering alone would have put it on a different planet. Not to mention the magic ride/handling balance that impressed Gordon Murray and which made my 991 Carrera look like a clumsy toddler stumbling down the road. I have never been more shocked at driving a car than the Evora 400. And I came into driving the Evora expecting a lot. the later evoras (the ones you want) also cost nearly double the new z and supra. The Evora even sounds sooo much better than the z or supra and has no turbo lag being supercharged. I would say the driving experience is easlly worth double the price of the new supra or z.
@@memememine1 yeah but every 911 with electric power steering has meh feel though. I was so disappointed by my friends 991.2 GT3RS and my friend sold his 991.1 Gt3 told me that it's not that great. (GT4 that I drove for a week also wasn't that great but did communicate with me though). I do agree with most of your point. But I think since Z is pushing for Retro feel and A91 is pushing for performance, evora (which has both) would be great benchmark vehicle
@@racesuey Which is why old Porsches are where it’s at! Both either the Hydraulic and/or Unassisted racks are so wonderfully executed by Porsche. The Front engined, Rear driven Transaxles and the oldest of old school 911s and classic mid engined Porsches just do it for me. Eventually will look into getting there. Such communication and feel that no modern car can ever touch.
@@rahulmandala4930 I don't know. I have two friends with old porsche (one with G body and another one with 993) and their opinion is honestly hit and miss. 993 felt too GT to feel pure imho.
@@racesuey Which is why I mentioned cars like the 912 911s, 914s, 964 Carrera 2.7/RS, Transaxle cars like the 924/944, etc. Those cars are all raw, delightfully analog and incredibly light. "Hit and miss" could mean a couple of things: Either they simply love the cars or don't. It could also mean that maybe they have a love/hate relation with their cars where they love and don't like certain things about them. Yeah, there's no denying the 993 chassis got slightly heavier at low 3,000 lbs., but there are people that are stripping quite the weight out of them like the standard seats are heavy, AC unit, Cat bypass/Sport Cat, and other unnecessary weights that don't benefit the car. FWIW, The Evora and Elise are two different classes of cars. The Elise will absolutely crucify the Evora in terms of raw feel.
It is SBORA!!! cheers from Italy!
My favorite color is Gainsborough blue
Clock in background gives away the magic of editing.
Jason parroting John Davis (at the end) "we're glad to have you with us" was great.
this was great! I'd love to see an episode with James from Donut, as well.
Yeah I’d love to see James in another context. He’s a true car guy, I know that, but we don’t get to see him much off script telling his backstory
I have some concerns that I'll be too tempted to get a Lotus emira in the touring spec rather than the sport spec, on account of road surface quality.
Thank you for convincing me to not compromise driving experience on a car that will be part of my 2 car solution.
Three goats. All thats missing is thomas,
Love to see it!
Liking odd car things... i bought two different olds toronados because I could set my coffee cups flat on the floor on my way to work. I loved that. And my porsche 944 was super wide and the driver seat could move back a huge huge amount.. so comfy
Fncking Fantastic this one !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guest of the Century!
I see what you did there! ruclips.net/video/g75sEqy-RRM/видео.html
*Clapping solution!* Derek has difficulty clapping, _because his seat is too low._
His elbows are lower than the top of the table, so he has to move further back from the table to swing his little arms. 🙂
HOW did Jason make that sound at 51:35 . Unreal.
Heh, it's one of my biggest failings - I didn't learn how to make that sound until AFTER high school.
Great Clarkson impression!
Thanks... TONIGHT!
Would have been nice to hear more from James.
James just got big leagued hard
Wow a guest!
Its an hour long but it felt like 30mins.
Enjoyed it tho.
James was a great addition, love throttle house content. However I hope you guys know you don’t need guests to keep things interesting.
Guys the frames are built exactly same fashion for most 60's-70's Ferrari's . 308 GTB same as GTS . None have a structure above the platform frame that it is , what upper structure exists is simply for attaching the body .
Oh shit James!!!
Always love the show but if you are watching on RUclips the magic of editing didn't fix the clock on the wall behind Jason where you are apparently time travelling (inro is at 10:45, the main show is at 9:44 🙂)
They always film the intro last because they never know what they are actually going to talk about when they record. That is part of the magic of the show. It is not scripted to death.
@@evolv-electric agreed, so the moral of the story is keep doing what you are doing (but just don't do it with a clock in the background :-)
I worked 43 years in broadcast tv , news and politics and I dont notice small continuity issues.. I just know things are recorded and edited and the final edit time line is all that is important.
Heh it's just the intro.... which we recorded as soon as we were done with the show. Blame our bosses - they're making us do a real intro! (And I don't actually have a problem with this!)
Wait, the 308 GT4 is only getting 14 MPG? I've got a Big block trans am that I've managed to get 17 MPG out of. I really need to work on it.
James is the best feature since Gunna
I have always wanted to go to car week. I have no idea what I would do though. What do I do? Can I use my Noble in some way? A show or something? Or should I load bikes in the pickup truck and just ride around looking at cars?
Oh just show up in the Noble and enjoy the scenery!
Hey, it was James!
Crikey!!!! James from Throttle HOUse! Lets do this! OMG that clap!
the reason I want a new yellow Nissan Z is because my gran had a 1972 yellow 240z, that is my reference point
Having been to Monterey Car Week for the whole week: you get wholly desensitized by day 3 or 4. It's like how many multi million dollar cars can you see until you're like 'whatever'...?
Jason’s perspective on making super cars too good is on point. A good car is compromised. Make a super car.
James is a God, Jason and Derek are ok too
when can we et a video on saphire doing the supposed 0-60 under 2 seconds and describing how the steering feedback etc is
maybe some fake sound vs no sound comparison? feels better if you over that its fake? after all, its a funny fun car, fake or less effceint dosnt matter that much...
Great to see AndIAmJames here
A spicy pickle went really well with this episode.
Am I having a stroke or is this the best day ever!!!!!!!!
Derek was a very naughty boy at the start of this episode
Love you guys but the FP episode please. Been waiting for 2 plus years.
I got tuberculosis because the next episode is not released yet
I would like an episode on tires
Waiting for Jason to hate on my Mondial QV. Heavier than his GT4, down on power due to emissions. On the other hand it delivers an experience above what most expect. It is a car you look forward to driving, take the long route, but then need to relax after you get out. Guess by Derek's criteria the Mondial is douche proof.
You know guys, when you have a clock on the wall it reveals all your editing 😉
Heh it's only for the intro!
Funniest man in automotive RUclips is Mr. Regular, and I won’t hear any arguments. That said, James is awesome and a great guest.
Different type of humor, which you may find funnier
This is the kinda shit I live for
As soon as I saw the title I was immediately dissappointed, but if anything, this video further showcases both of your extensive knowledge and passion whilst babysitting James
Seriously? Babysitting? I think James is great, even if he’s not a hardcore driver. He’s not pretentious, he brings a normal car guy perspective which is important. Having him on here is a sign of respect for what Throttle House is doing.
@@nathanchildress5596 Barely spoke anything relevant, if at all; clearly lacks the experience the Carmudgeon crew has, thus completely disparaging any opinion of validity.
@@waldemarieofrow653 I thought he was being polite and deferring to the hosts. Meanwhile Jason & Derek, while great, can be pretty self righteous at times and dominated the conversation; perhaps because they've experienced so many cars. I personally found it refreshing to have the perspective of an every-man, new to Pebble Beach, who doesn't have a vintage Italian super car in their garage or the luxury of being able to dismiss cars which people love.
@@nathanchildress5596 Now that you mention it, I agree. Getting a new perspective is actually more relevant to viewers who will never experience Pebble Beach or any of cars. His love for the original NSX contrasted by the hosts jaded perception of it being a clear example.
Regular people want an EV that doesn't have a 20% haircut vs a gas car. Sure, there are some people who can afford it, but the closer EVs get to "normal people prices" the less the economics work. That's where chasing Tesla is so annoying. Someone needs to deliver a legitimate $30k EV that delivers as much or more than a $30k gas car without compromises.
I need to find a car that makes me need to drive a Prius for 3 days 🤣
I love you guys and this podcast and I learn something new almost every time but this had a rather patronizing tone towards James. It had a very, "yeah but you don't know any better" vibe to it when he dared to express interest in relatively modern cars. You're allowed to like new and old cars and appreciate them for their merits guys. Nobody is gonna take away your car enthusiast card haha
Blimey!
You love wagons but only seem to mention German cars - what about latest Volvo V60 & V90 - no good ?
I don't think Jason understands the difference between negative and fractional. If a car promises 2 and delivers 10 it had a douche factor of .5 (or 1/2 in freedom units). This is still a positive number.
The whole point of the NSX AND the BMW 8 Series E31 was to have a comfortable everyday exotic car that was easy to live with. Camissa - for once - is absolutely wrong. Supercars are a waste of time, maintenance and money. They all have low mileage because they aren't enjoyable to drive and servicing intervals are ridiculous money, IF you can find someone familiar enough to work on them.
Is AndImJames's last name really Engelsman? That's a little on the nose...
I don't get it
I want to change my name to James so I can say and I'm James.
My girlfriend and all her family are from Salinas and she agrees stay away from Salinas lol
I have an NSX :(
Dividing two positive numbers isn’t negative Jason. You let me down
5:21 and the magic of time travel ... Also, add my vote to those wanting Mark and Jack of savagegeese to join for an episode or more.
I love how you guys basically invited James just to insult his underdeveloped taste for an hour
The NSX is not your normal driving car wtf. Lol this is incorrect. Its an experience for sure and you are reminded of it every second.
I love all three of you but I feel like you were mean to James at bit. :/
Jason tries too hard sometimes. Calm down and let the guest talk…
Negative douche factors. Lotus Carlton - Looks 2 - Experience 10 : Ford Cosworth Sapphire Looks 2 - Experience 10

😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
Can I nominate a car for consideration for douche-proofness? Sorry, but it's *not* an intense experience type of vehicle....
If I was to buy a recent, modern-ish car, it would quite possibly be a superceded model Skoda Octavia RS wagon _with manual 'box_ ...
Not the sedan - which was actually a clever hatchback.
Not the quicker, latest, current model, which is possibly even more fast...
Not the fastest of the current models, either.
No, it's not the AWD version (that some markets got, but not Straya. ☹️)
Just the previous series, RS 6-speed manual wagon.
It's based closely on the Golf GTi so it has more than enough features and convenience.
It's the manual shifted + GTi engine + wagon that I want to experience in a daily
A guest... how bizzare.. never watched throttle house anything.. not sure that today would change that.
Guests, no matter who, are a bit superfluous on this show…
