The NVIDIA RTX 4060 Ti GPU is a waste of sand -- it's unbelievable how NVIDIA can't even defeat its own prior namesake GPUs in a meaningful way at the same price. No wonder the company has been pushing DLSS3 so hard -- the lower the resolution they can convince you to run at, the better for this video card. With rumors of an AMD RX 7600 around the corner, and with Intel Arc A750 & A770 GPUs getting stronger with each update, NVIDIA is facing an uphill battle. This review & benchmark compares the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB to the RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 4070, the GTX 1060, Arc GPUs, AMD RX 6700 XT, and AMD RX 6800 XT. We look at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K gaming and the best GPUs for each, plus ray tracing benchmarks, power consumption, and thermals. The 4060 Ti 16GB might not be enough to save it.

If you’ve been watching financial news, Nvidia is doing great right now as a stock because of AI, and their high end data center cards like the A100 are in extreme demand. My hunch is they’re starting to view PC gamers as less of their core segment and just something they “maintain” for some extra funding while they invest more in their data center cards and that side of their business. Look at how they’re pushing DLSS. AI is clearly their thing.

    • @MikeHammer1
      @MikeHammer1 11 месяцев назад

@@joelewing4216 There is truth to what you wrote. First, I was aware that Nvidia dropped the number of bits on the memory bus from 256 to 128, but not that they also cut the PCI-E lanes used in half. With only 8GB of VRam some games will run slower on a PCI-E 3.0 system. This has been proven by some RUclipsrs who tested the card on both systems. Most games run on a PCI-E 3.0 system ran with less than a 2% FPS reduction. There were some worst cases that were down almost 10%, but would not likely affect playability as the reduction did not seem to cause any visual stuttering or excessively low frame rates. Nevertheless, shame on Nvidia for making the 4060 Ti actually be such a poor performer. When I recently decided to upgrade from my ancient (10 year old) 1GB ATI graphics card I looked at both the 3060 Ti and 4060 Ti and decided on the 3060 Ti as it was $130 less and would run anything at 1080 and 1440P without issue. Both cards will run 4K, but at reduced quality. As my core i7 4771 intel based system has PCI-E 3.0, I am glad I made that decision. FYI, I bought an Asus TUF 3060 Ti for $320, new. The TUF 4060 Ti model was running $450 at the time. I am happy with my decision. I wanted to buy a new graphics card back in 2020, but I refused to be scalped by prices over MSRP.

  • @Telleelle
    @Telleelle 8 месяцев назад +1

why 8GB and 16GB.. From Nvidia:
Gamers often wonder why a graphics card has a certain amount of VRAM.
Current-generation GDDR6X and GDDR6 memory is supplied in densities of 8Gb (1GB of data) and 16Gb (2GB of data) per chip. Each memory chip can use either two separate 16-bit channels to connect to a single 32-bit memory controller, or two 8-bit channels, so two memory chips can connect to a single 32-bit memory controller. This allows a 128-bit GPU to support either 4 memory chips or 8 memory chips.
Higher capacity chips cost more to make, so a balance is required to optimize prices.
On our new 128-bit memory bus GeForce RTX 4060 Ti GPUs, the 8GB model uses four 16Gb GDDR6 memory chips, and the 16GB model uses eight 16Gb chips. Mixing densities isn’t possible, preventing the creation of a 12GB model, for example. That’s also why the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti has an option with more memory (16GB) than the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti and 4070, which have 192-bit memory interfaces and therefore 12GB of VRAM.
Our 60-class GPUs have been carefully crafted to deliver the optimum combination of performance, price, and power efficiency, which is why we chose a 128-bit memory interface.
In short, higher capacity GPUs of the same bus width always have double the memory.

I'll buy one. I have a HP s5-1214 Slimline mini-ATX tower from 2018. It only has DirectX 11, a SATA II HDD, USB 2.0 and 802.11n with integrated graphics that can do DVI-d or HDMI at 1080p. It has a Sandy Bridge quad-core processor with 20-lanes of PCI 2.0.
This card, along with a few other updates, makes it functional again.
      - I max'd the DDR3 ram to 16GB for $50.
      - Max'd the CPU to i7-2600K for $35.
      - Added a mini-PCIe card to get two SATA III ports for $15 (limited to 4 Gbps due to PCIe 2.0x1 being 0.5 GB/s).
      - Swapped the 750GB SATA II HDD for a 1TB SATA III SSD for $60 (plus $10 for a 3.5" to a dual 2.5" bay adaptor).
      - Added an Intel BE200 Wi-Fi 7 with Bluetooth 5.3 ($35) using a M.2 slot combo card that also has a NVMe M.2 Type M slot (over the same PCIe x1 lane) for future use (also limited to 4 Gbps due to PCI 2.0x1 only being 0.5 GB/s) for $29.
      - Added a powered USB 3.0 card with 2 Type A and one Type c ports (using with SATA power connector), and a USB 3.0 header for the front panel for $19.
      - Replaced the HP 240W Flex ATX power supply for a 500W one with modular cables for $55.
      - Added a PCIe x16 riser that provides two M.2 Type M NVMe slots with x4 each, and has a physical PCIe x16 top slot with x8 lanes for $23.
      - I've been unable to find a 12-1 pin TPM 2.0 module for the LPC connector on HP/foxconn motherboards from that era, but I'm hoping it will appear in the UEFI after I change the SSD to GPT format and convert the bios from Legacy to UEFI. If not, there are ways around the TPM 2.0 requirement for Windows 11. ;)
This gives me a casual gaming, Windows 11 compliant, DirectX 12 enabled, Wi-Fi- 7, Bluetooth 5.3, 16GB, NVMe SSD (PCI 2.0x4) system with 500W power and dual Display Ports for 4K video or 1080p gaming... and any connector I need for casual use... for $261... plus the card.
A toss-away computer, became a screaming web surfer for cheap... and this card allows Windows 11 installation along with 4K displays.
The fact that it only uses 160W makes it ideal for mini-ATX builds like mine, and the extra 8 lanes it frees up gives me dual NVMe x4 SSDs each at 2GB/s (vs even the SATA III SSD running at 500Mb/s over the PCIx1 lane). Those lanes are like gold in a PCIe 2.0 motherboard. Not only do you need lanes for data/SSD, but the processors back then only had a few lanes available (my Sandy Bridge processor can handle 20 lanes... 16 in that GPU slot, and 1 lane in each PCI x1 slot and the mini-PCIe slot).
While it's possible to split and use PCIe x16 slots in x8x8 or x8x4x4 set ups, you simply CAN'T combine four x1 lanes back up to a single x4 if you wanted to run NVMe at full speed. Without a x8 lane PCI GPU you'd either have to pick a x16 GPU or keep the integrated graphics and use that slot for say four x4 lanes of NVME.
A real DirectX 12 GPU, with decent performance, dual monitors, and low power consumption is amazing IMO.
If I was to forgo a NVMe x4 SSD and just stick with the SATA III SSD running through the mini-PCIe x1 lane (capped at 0.5Gbps) I "could" use a PCIe x16 GPU... but that also means a lot more cash for the RTX 4070, or an older gen GPU and more cash on a larger PSU, if you can find one in Flex ATX (600W is the largest I can find for this slim-tower design, and they've been out of stock for months, so a 500W will have to do).

What makes this all the more shocking is that the 4060ti has 2,310mhz and 2,535mhz boost clocks. The 3060ti FE is 1,665mhz base clock but averages around 1,900mhz.
Now not to say that "it's not fair cos new card go BRRrrr", as that is the very nature of architecture. To get faster. But this shows that even with the clocks dialed up, the 4060ti can barely escape the 3060ti in raw performace. And here's why:
    Nvidia is selling a 4050 as a 4060ti.
4060ti is AD106, it's around 24% of the full GPU die (4350 CUDA cores)
3060ti is GA104, it's 45% of the full GPU die (4864 CUDA cores)
3050 is GA106, it's (you guessed it) 24% of the full GPU die (2560 CUDA cores)
So in summary, Nvidia is selling you a card with LESS CUDA cores than a 3060ti, and it should be a 4050. Likely Nvidia felt jaded by the consumer backlash over the 4070 fiasco, so they just gave the consumers a even worse cut down card in retalliation, in the market sector where people don't want to buy the high end.

I've just bought it and I'm happy with it since I only play at 1080p and in games that I wanted to play I have 80-120 fps at max settings. It obviously wouldn't justify an upgrade from 3060 since the difference is minimal but if you're upgrading from a 1050 with 2gb of VRAM the difference is huge. And at least in my country the price difference between 3060 and 4060 was minimal, maybe 40-50$ so when I've seen that it has 15-20% more fps I decided that it's a no brainer for 10% of the price. But I agree that 8gb vram is really not much and it's clearly not a next generation from 3060 outside of features like DLSS and stuff. But I think that for me it was the right choice.
Also 3060 required 550w or even stronger power supply and 4060 required 500W which I have so it was the only option. It's technologically embarrassing but right for me, a bit of an improvement for a modest increase in price.

It's basically a 60 card charged at 80 prices and called a "70 series" despite the fact GTX 780 was $600, 980 was a $550 card, GTX 1070 was $380, 5700XT was still $400 and it was literally Turing that they began jacking prices which they changed to $500 and $700 the 70 and 80 cards. Then they had the fuckin audacity to call it "great value" because they began being astronomical with 2080ti prices so they honest to God in 2020 tried to advertise the $500 3070 as "fantastic value" even though not long before it would've been a $400 card, and we see now how badly made that GPU was with some of us even before release grumbling about how big an impact the VRAM was going to have. I had no earthly idea they would STILL refuse to put 16gb on their cards and keep trying to use 8gb. It's dead on arrival. 8gb is not even good enough to enable raytracing at 1080p ultra. It WILL lag, stutter, and crash at that bad VRAM, like the 3070 did on TLOU with ultra settings or Hogwarts using up all that VRAM and there isn't any real way to "optimize" for it without ruining texture quality. You can't upscale around it either, you wind up with bad looking muddy textures.
So it was already a problem before alleged 4060ti yes, and yeah pricing was already a problem since years ago. They been making consistently worse product and charging ever more prices and it's clear their whole plan all along was to slowly turn water temperature up and hope the frog doesn't hop out the pot too soon. They were going to keep doing this forever until enough gamers finally abandoned the brand entirely. Some type of people will push up on you and they literally will not stop until you throw a punch and set boudnaries. That is why we have police and military in the first place, because some guys like that get to power and the only way to deal with them is hit them in the face and tell them to stop or the beatings continue. Such case is nvidia right now. They realized they could keep increasing price and their customer would still buy it no matter what, so they wondered if they could just rename lesser cards as higher end and keep selling worse hardware for higher prices too and hope nobody noticed or complains. The also tried doing this with the alleged 4080 12gb but outcry was already so bad before launch they basically just renamed it 4070ti.

I dont think this really comes out of nowhere. The 2060 vs 1060 was already almost no progress, if you considered how the former also got a price hike, 2060s were priced like 1070 IIRC. The 3000s GPUs were clearly better, but continued the high prices and had low VRAM compared to AMD offerings. Mind AMD had 12gigs in 6700 and 16 gigs in 6800. Meanwhole 3080 was 10 gigs.
Funny thing is, Nvidia for some reason put 12 gigs in the 3060, which was actually pretty generous for that level of GPU. Tho that card still had lower performance and higher price than AMDs 6600 XT.
Now this 4060 TI is an absolute joke, almost a regression with price increase, but lets not forget this BS started to happen after the 1000 series.

It performs the same as the previous-gen card despite reduced memory bandwidth but adds DLSS 3 which greatly increases performance at no cost... I can't really say I fully understand the complaints. None of Steve's charts include DLSS3 for some reason. Disappointment comes from the gap between expectation and reality. Did anyone expect this card to be cheap in light of recent events? Does anyone think AMD will do better? Only Intel is playing the value game right now, and it makes sense because from very recent first-hand experience, their drivers are a pile of ass. I have a 3080 I'm not looking to replace until 5000 or 6000, but I'd LOVE this in a laptop.

I got a 1440p screen and I sorta needed a better a video card yesterday and I wanted some NVIDIA functionalities this round.
After seeing the first leaked tests, I got a 3060ti in the discount bin SO FAST that I can't even tell. After seeing this, I'm super glad that I did it. It might be able to survive with some tweaks until I build a new PC in a couple years. The best thing 4060ti did was slashing the price of 3060ti, an ok entry-level card for 1440p.

i think 4060ti, hits most boxes, especially if your looking for an affordable upgrade, im still rocking an amd 6600 8gb 1900mhz pulse, its okay, but ive had it for too long and now its dying on me, 4060TI 16gb fixes the memory spill, while also remaining affordable, but if your buying the 4060TI and expecting it to blow you away and beat the competition then your not looking for 4060ti.
i would call a 4060TI a budget buddy, not a monster card, its unique in its own right to provide "new" pc users with a cheap card to just get into desktop building.
for its price at under £400 compared to like a 3070-3080 at nearly 600-700, its half the price and only underperforms them by 17-25%
and it can run most modern games at reasonable but not breath taking graphics, so thank you nvidia
plus with the cost of living going way up, affordable GPU's are gonna probably be purchased more for first time PC builders, just saying no one at £10.52/hour minimum wage who has to pay nearly £2000 a month to live could realistic afford a £1000 gpu unless they work nearly 50 hours week in overtime XD

if i were in the market for a new gpu, say mine died or something, this is probably the one i'd get to be completely honest with you. it might not be good for someone who wants an actual upgrade, but i can see it being totally fine for somebody who doesn't already have a gpu that can contend with this one, if not just desirable at this price point.
