To just dump a single teabag into a mug of hot water I find a little insulting for £3.00. They should at least present it a little better by having a separate small tray with a teapot for 2 and milk jug, sugar, etc to justify the price. First impressions count. Good review again Gary

This and the branch in Edinburgh used to be absolutely fantastic, the Covid pandemic and the push for outdoor dining made the place a fortune. Since then both places have let it go to there head and the prices have went through the roof and the quality has sunk. There is much better options now. They also add a service charge and get stroppy when you ask for it to be removed.
Black pudding and haggis can lift a breakfast stratospherically. I’m not a fan of maple bacon - I’d rather add a touch of HP to smoked bacon than have my bacon maple flavoured. But, if I have to eat streaky bacon (not much alternative here in the USA) I liked it cooked exactly as you like it - I do get frustrated here as it is usually burnt and people pick it up with fingers in order to eat it. Scotland has such good quality meat products it was disappointing to see poor sausages - whatever shape! It never dawned on me that the beans being in a ramekin is such a good idea - great advice. Great review as always.
That's a shame Gary, worth a try though. In my opinion there's no secret to a great English/Scottish/Irish breakast, just use the best ingredients you can get and cook them with a little love and care. You dont need any fancy culinary skills, let the quality produce do all the heavy lifting 👍🏼
Gary, you saved that breakfast because it didn't look great when it turned up, but instead of trashing it you looked for tthe positives and in the end you gave it a reasonable review, that is class, thank you, and have a good weekend.
Thank you Colin for your lovely comment, you always have to see the positives. They didn't do it on purpose, a bit better presentation with new sausages and we're onto something!
To pair catering sausages with quality black pudding and haggis is a false economy. As you said, the sausage makes the breakfast. It all looked a bit overcooked, to me. Three quid for a mug of tea is ripping it, somewhat, and the lack of a plate knocks off another point. I'll go along with your 5 / 10.
It was a good video, but I think he did this place a little dirty. For 14 GBP he got quite a lot of food, much of it made in house. He didn't apply the same price to quality ratio he has at other places!🤷
I always like to guess what score you're going to give the meals, and these days I'm almost always spot on. Your honest comments on the food is what makes your videos' so special for us all. Keep on giving it a go, Gary. 👍👍
Can't really complain about a Scottish breakfast from a Canadian place which also offers an Argentinan breakfast and a Mexican one. Wrong choice for a full Scottish.
@@duncanneave3959 I live in London and find plenty of 'English breakfasts' which are made by foreigners, in fact I used to visit Maggie's Cafe in Lewisham, where this Irish lady used to do banging English breakfasts. Where would you suggest to go for a full Scottish brekafast then Duncan?
I’m a bit confused. As an Edinburgh resident, I’ve never ever thought I’d Down The Hatch as a place to get any form of cooked breakfast, it’s known here for its American and Canadian style food. Edinburgh is full of incredible places that specialise in full cooked breakfast; this is not one in my opinion!
@@GaryEats you gotta remember, Gary, you are comparing it to all the places you have been. For some people who wrote the reviews this may be the best, or the only, place they go to. There is a local fish & chip shop in my area. It is very average with everything frozen and it has that real frozen and foul oil taste. People get caught up with the "Beatles" music playing and the UK theme (I am in Australia) and they think it is wonderful authentic fish and chips and the reviews are outstanding. There is absolutely nothing British about the place and it is just frozen rubbish thrown in to a fryer. However, it gets great reviews and people make day trips to visit it.
You stayed positive even when the breakfast had many negatives. That epitomises what a gentleman you are. Great review and a fair rating. Keep up the good work.
For the same reason why you drink Brazilian coffee when you live in UK!Why not??!!! Yee-haw! Gary's a badass who lives on a knifes edge and decides to live his life to the max!
@@johngslot8367 thats not a good analogy. You dont get Scottish coffee, Yorkshire Coffeee, Canadian coffee. Most coffee is from Colombia & Brazil. Im scottish & i wouldnt go to a Canadian theme cafe for Scottish food.
It's great having you in Scotland reviewing our restaurants but if you want a good ( and representative! ) Scottish breakfast then go to somewhere Scottish....not a Canadian company that deals in 'International' breakfasts ' of which the Scottish breakfast is just a variety for them. That's like going to MacDonalds for a Biryani. Also, you can ask in any eatery for your beans to be served in a ramekin so that is no big deal. :)
We Canadians do love our Moose. By the title of the video I'm assuming the food was just average. No matter, looking forward to watching the review. Hope everyone is enjoying the day.
Your such a kind and generous man Gary, even though you gave it a 5 you still left a tip, Well done. Looked quite ordinary, I don’t like the egg touching the beans or tomato, just a preference. However I am a bit fussy about tea. For me squeezing the tea bag is a big no no. It make the tea taste bitter. Just leave it or dunk it a bit if you like it strong, no squeezing. Good review, thanks Gary and son 🥰
I know it's down to personal taste but I detest beans with breakfast. They infect everything with that sickly sweet tomato sauce. If you're still up here, try Kilimanjaro in Edinburgh for their 'Killi breakfast', Gary. It's fab.
Susan here That’s the last place I’d go for breakfast It looks like an industrial estate The best thing about your brekky was that view of the bridges…wow As always, thank you Gary
Lots of grease at the bottom of that skillet it didn't look like an appetising breakfast. Mug of tea with a bag thrown in £3 You found something positive from a negative start good for you. You need sugar you're sweet enough Gary. Great review as always just love your take on food. Thank you🎉🎉
@GaryEats that usually happens when you try to break off a slice from the block straight from the freezer 😐 the amount of times it's happened to me I now wrap each slice separately before freezing
Hi Gary, I’m from Canada. I am not being disrespectful, but… I don’t eat that for breakfast. It didn’t look to good. The blood sausage sounded very interesting, but the taste of beans in every bite would be off putting to me. It looks like such a beautiful place to visit. I’ve heard wonderful things about the people there. Try, eggs Benedict with pea meal, smoked ham or blood sausage and spinach on an English muffin. Homemade hollandaise, is sooo good. Cheer. 🍻
It was supposed to be a review of a Scottish breakfast served in Scotland, not a Canadian breakfast. That's probably why you, as a Canadian, doesn't eat that for breakfast.
Hi Gary, I admire your approach to reviewing, even when not a good experience. I left a review recently on a well-known website that I bitterly regret. I was honest, but I was unkind. That is your strength, kindness, and you're a better person than me for it
Ah Richard. Thank you. The vast majority of people do not like giving bad reviews. I really dislike it. I've been in the pub industry for 35 years and bad reviews used to be a real frustration but we're all only human and sometimes frustration can get the better of us, especially when you're hoping for an excellent meal or drink. Have a lovely weekend and do not worry about it. It happens.
Im so glad you have spent time up in Scotland. Plenty of quality food and everything in between. Hope you have enjoyed 👍👍👍👍 I am heading back from Qatar in January and will try some of these places too. Keep up the great posts 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I truly had a wonderful time in Scotland some amazing restaurants and wonderful people Duncan, I do have a couple of more videos to come, one of which is my favourite on the channel so far
Hi Gary. I thought the presentation of that meal left a lot to be desired. Expectations went down as soon as we saw that as it didn't look good. Yes, I personally think that mushrooms should always be included in a breakfast. I've not tried haggis but, from your reaction it tastes better than it looks. Excellent review as always.
I can understand your disappointment, I think a Scottish Breakfast should be, 2 slices Back Bacon, I Lorne Sausage, 1 Black Pudding, I Egg, I Potato Scone, simple, no Haggis, no Beans, no Hash Brown.
@@GaryEats Fried Haggis, no thank you. Served with Tatties and Neeps, perfection. Of course you can get a bad Haggis which is awful but a good Haggis is great. Hope you are enjoying your visit to Scotland.
I really query people who don't like mushrooms. The only plausible explanation is that the ones they've had are not cooked properly, which is a shame. The red flag for me is when I hear "I like the taste but not the texture" That's a cooking thing. The rookie mistake with mushrooms is not knowing they have a huge amount of water in them and washing them in water just makes it worse because they're also very hydroscopic. Not knowing this can mean they come out slimy, which even I don't like.
Sounds like Down The Hatch belongs Down in the Dumps, Real Canadian Resto's are much better owner probably has no roots in Canada he/she should know better.
From what you said, 5 is too low. You liked the hash brown and tattie scone, you really like the bacon, and you really really liked the black pudding and haggis. The sausages were a disappointment, but putting it all together and adding it all up, it for sure comes to more than 5. Per your description, it's a 7.
Agreed after reading the title of the video and then the score you would think most of it was pretty bad/average but really he liked most things on the plate and in some cases really liked some things so the overall rating did confuse me at bit.
The presentation was terrible, both sausages were bad, the tattie scone/hash browns were was ok but they were standard catering. Tea not included brings the whole thing to £16 for a pretty average breakfast. I would say a 6 at the very most, no way a 7. Too generous Steven lol (I usually get told that myself)
I’d definitely serve the beans separately in a dish, maybe along with the roasted tomato, those things are gonna be messy and ruin the rest of the flavors in the skillet. They could work on the presentation and definitely raise the quality of the sausage and hash brown. Maybe even do something with the toast too, add some jam or something.
Oh dear, that Scottish breakfast looked as if they have just opened up a supermarket breakfast pack and dumped it into a skillet. I love black pudding and haggis but TBH, even cheap ones taste good. As I said, it all looked to be out of a breakfast packet. The bridges, Forth Rail Bridge, Forth road bridge, and finally, The Queensferry Crossing. You were paying for the view Gary!! 😀
You know Gary, the first impressions of any meal is the presentation. You eat with you eyes. Sometimes youi just can't get past that. This is the case with " Down the Hatch" . As always, Spot on with this video. Got a question for you Gary ? What did you do in Spain ? All the best , Gary 👍👍 Jim and Harriet
As a "European🙂" the breakfast looked more interesting than tempting? I repeat what I said before, maybe also explore stuff in the future, show more of your travel.., you are a sharp observer with loads of likeability, cheers Anders🇸🇪
Hi Garry , as a semi-pro photographer { before my disability } this area of South Queensferry was our go to place on a weekend { we would drive down from Arbroath for sunrise at the bridges } , and when Down The Hatch opened it was the perfect place for us to go , the food was fabulous and a real pick me up having spent a few hours out in the cold , but as time went on their standards dropped , which is a shame as we loved it , good review again
I'm glad you're in Scotland ❤. I went there once. You always give very indepth reviews of the food and the ambience and service etc. Have a lovely day Gary ❤
As a Canadian, my dad taught me two lessons that were my favorites: "don't start a fight but finish them" and "don't order fish in a steakhouse or vice versa". Now, I actually find your review MORE interesting that you tried a perhaps "secondary" item outside the specialty of this Canadian restaurant and I hope to see more! But, as a rule for when one goes out for a great meal themselves, stick with the specialties of the particular restaurant is a good rule of thumb.
What the Canadian diner gave you wasn't a proper Scottish Breakfast. There are plenty of cafes and farmhouse type restaurant that serves a Full Scottish Breakfast. The ingredients used in the Canadian diner breakfast were mass produced in the factory.
Hello Gary: Based on your reactions to this meal and the individual contents, I think it would be safe to say that you probably would NOT like most of the breakfast sausage served here in the USA. What we have here is mainly mass-produced without the herbs and seasonings you are accustomed to. There is an English purveyor of the types of goods you are accustomed to located in the Chicago, Illinois area called JOLLY POSH FOODS and I and a British co-worker ordered from him. We ordered back bacon, mix for Yorkshire pudding, cippolata sausages, regular pork sausages and I think, if you lived in the USA, his products would be to your liking. Cheers, Paul Connors New Jersey, USA
I am coming to America in March next year it’s all booked, I hope to have a very good breakfast, I am looking forward to the home-made hashbrowns, I hope you’re keeping well and please have a wonderful weekend 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Frankly. As a Canadian living in Edinburgh; Down The Hatch is a pretty poor attempt at Canadian food. Just because the owner comes from Canada and lives here doesn’t make it any good! Eaten at Queensferry and the one in town. Very little is Canadian. The poutine is awful. Very little is any good. The fries are ok, but that’s it. Sorry.
That breakfast wasn’t a Scottish breakfast that I recognise. Steak lorne sausage, beef links, fruit pudding, black pudding, back bacon, eggs, maybe haggis (but it wasn’t ever put on a breakfast in our house it was served with neeps and totties). Beans and tomato optional. That streaky bacon isn’t a Scottish breakfast item, back bacon Ayrshire ham. Also the bread was just regular bread, what about a plain loaf or lovely Scottish rolls.
My dad loved beans but would never ever have them for breakfast he called them a plate filler.... We'd have 2-3 steak Lorne, 2 rashers of back bacon, black pudding, fruit pudding, tattie scone, fried egg and fried bread and that was you to dinner time on a Saturday as you were stuffed.
Good evening mister G and co. I do hope you're both well and enjoying Scotland. That breakfast, to me, looked very messy!! Like it was dropped from a height into a frying pan!! What ever happened to the humble plate??? 🤔🤔 Today it all seems to be boards, slates, oversized bowls and skillets!!! Give me a plate anyday!! I think the Hash brown, egg and beans were the only edible food stuffs there, along with the toast...my opinion. Tea/coffee should ALWAYS be included in a brekky, as should the toast AND £3 for one teabag??😱😱😱 They're having a laugh aren't they???? 😳😳 It was a lot of money for not the best food. The view of the bridges kind of made it better but not much!! Hope you're managing to stay toastie warm up there. Snow in Hastings today...only just though!! Have a great evening. See you next time 😃
I love haggis. I love it on a breakfast - and if I can get some, it's the main feature of that meal. Haggis, egg, beans, toast - I can happily go without bacon and sausage when I have haggis! It has such a unique flavour. At least the scenery, though misty, was good! Those bridges are an icon in that part of Scotland and being below them is quite an experience! It looks like your time up there has been well spent and full of variety! Hope both you and Camera-son are getting plenty of rest, so neither of you succumbs to any bugs circulating right now! And, knowing from family what the weather is currently up to - stay safe!
If you are going to specialise in breakfasts you need to hit the mark and sausages are massive part of that,a breakfast should never suffer from lack of taste
Should not serve a lazy poorly cooked and rubbish quality catering sausage full stop, and that hash brown too (that looked the same as maccy d's to me!). Maybe they had the work experience guy in for the day but even so, go get some local potatoes and show him how to make some 'honest' hash browns (and not just chuck everything in a cold skillet at the end!)!
Iv never seen anyone get so excited not having mushrooms 🍄 on a plate Gary 🤣. Yeah, a bit disappointing alright. From 2 nill down to 4/2 up? I think you still lost. Serving it in a pan is simply silly if it’s not hot. Tatie scone? We call that potato bread in Ireland and you can buy it in Aldi. That looked exactly like it. Yeah 5/10. A bit disappointing 👍
An odd choice for first Scottish cooked breakfast. A Canadian chain instead of an independent one of which there must be loads. Still, at £16 i would expect a fair bit more. Love the channel and you have definitely given me some great food trips.
If I had cooked and served that breakfast to my star diner..aka hubby..first of all I would be having a bad day in the kitchen..and I would expect most items to be returned..however..my star diner likes breathing..ha ha..bit rubbish wasnt it..thanks for the vlog guys .👍
Evening G 😊 Hmmmm interesting choice of venue to represent a ‘traditional’ Scottish breakfast??! 🙄Looked like a dog’s breakfast rather than a Scottish one! I know I know TSB was your second choice - still! My usual pet hates - Should be a POT of tea fgs !! HB’s shouldn’t be there M’rms should! BB’s & toast shouldn’t be on the same plate! I hate that 😑 Very average cooking & quality & finally everything just chucked on the plate You’d’ve got a better breakfast just randomly knocking on any wee Scottish wifey’s front door! 4 out of 10 for me. Far as reviews go - Depends what the reviewers benchmark is 😑 Hope you’re enjoying yourselves 🌞😊
Decent ingredients with basic level of cooking and you're onto a winner and every staff member the served me were Scottish. I'm not sure why just because it's labelled a Canadian diner that it can't do a good Scottish breakfast. Thank you and really enjoyed myself, please take care!

The price charged for tea never ceases to amaze me. Half a pint of boiled water and a tea bag, milk and sugar to taste, 15p tops? Sell 100 cups of tea a day and thats £100,000 gross profit a year.
@@GaryEats Yes---but nowhere near £3 for a teabag in a mug. You said yourself, Gary, that the tea should have been included in the price of the breakfast---and so it should.
As a Scottish Canadian, I was thrilled that you found this place in Edinburgh. I have to wonder what the "Canadian breakfast" would have been like. I will likely be called on this, but no one I know in Canada eats Poutine. We were in London this past April and used some of your recommendations for places to eat, and they were amazing. Thank you so much for this channel. I really enjoy it. Cheers from Alberta, Canada!
@@alanledzep1967 I'm in Calgary. I see it at some places, but it isn't really something people seek out. I believe it started in Quebec didn't it...perhaps that's why it's popular in Ottawa. You're close by?
If I want a good Scottish Breakfast, I'd make it myself. That way I can choose where I get my starring parts. Good potato Scones are essential as are your sausages, especially Lorne (go for steak Lorne if you can). Black pudding can be really dry and not very tasty - choose a good local butcher's own, or some Stornoway. Bacon - ideally Ayrshire middle if you can get it, otherwise some good Scottish Back Bacon - unsmoked for me, but some will prefer the smoked version. Don't forget the eggs. As a veteran Scottish Breakfast eater from the early 60's on, baked beans and mushrooms were never there. I love them both, but they spoil a breakfast for me. As for the hash brown? What's that doing there. One ingredient I have always had, and found in some hotels in Scotland as well, is plum tomatoes. This makes it for me, but like with the alien beans, make a barrier from the egg(s).
Hi Gary, that's a Scottish breakfast I would have been tempted to complain about, but you can't complain about the breakfast looking like a crash site. The sausages looked and sounded horrible and the lorne sausage wasn't far behind. But what I really can't stand on a breakfast, is an overcooked egg. Thank you for taking one for the team and have an absolutely wonderful rest of your day and speak to you soon. Email incoming tomorrow.
I don't mind food be served in skillets as they keep temperature for a while- a pet hate of mine is cold food. You have to very careful though not to overheat them so something like 40/50C is ideal but it depends on the meal and frankly who's eating it as some people just seem to be used to cooler food, parents mainly from our locale and that's understandable.
WHAT a gentleman you are Gary. Not a very good review. But as always, you were VERY polite . AND you remained positive throughout, hoping for something to save it. Thank you
You should have stayed in Edinburgh for your breakfast Gary. Still, good reviews generally do hold weight. No one knows wether they like it if they don't try. Thanks for the review mate
Love how you always look for the positives despite less than great food. (PS loved seeing the forth bridge which I abseiled off of for charity earlier this year)
Gary 5 is a fair rating for a baked bean breakfast. Love the way you say the sausage was overdone, burnt more likely Lol. And its a crime not serve baked beans apart, you don't get mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy served over your fish and chips. Nice one Gary
Hi Gary. Thanks for the review. Ordering Full Scottish breakfast at what says is a Canadian Diner is strange. I'm a Canadian born in Montreal now living past Toronto and other than having Poutine on the menu and Maple Leafs everywhere I'm not sure how this is a Canadian Diner. More of an international diner with Argentinian Skillet and Steak Salad, Mexi Skillet, New York Rueben, Tijuana and Kansas Dogs, etc. on the menu. Montreal Rueben would have been more accurate and there's really no such sandwich in Montreal as the Cheese Sandwich (Philly style). Where are the classic Canadian dishes like Montreal Smoked Meat or Peameal Bacon sandwiches. How about Tourtiere pie, Atlantic Cod or Nova Scotia lobster roll? Hopefully the next Canadian Diner you try out has more actual Canadian dishes on it.
Well, the owners probably _were_ Scottish. But my gripe with this place is that there's just wayyyy too much on the menu in the first place. Do fewer things, and do them really well. It's what all truly great restaurants do!

Well said Andy, you've nailed. No need for overcomplication, just well cooked with decent ingredients!
100%. It ain't rocket surgery!
Hey Andy top words mate and it can even be cooked on a shovel

Gary, you saved that breakfast because it didn't look great when it turned up, but instead of trashing it you looked for tthe positives and in the end you gave it a reasonable review, that is class, thank you, and have a good weekend.
Thank you Colin for your lovely comment, you always have to see the positives. They didn't do it on purpose, a bit better presentation with new sausages and we're onto something!
Bacon 🥓 🍳 sausage
Bacon 🥓 🍳 sausage rather have it on white plate 🍽️
Soon to be at 200K subscribers. You deserve it, one of my favorite RUclips channels.
That’s so kind to say, thank you, Mick
To pair catering sausages with quality black pudding and haggis is a false economy. As you said, the sausage makes the breakfast.
It all looked a bit overcooked, to me.
Three quid for a mug of tea is ripping it, somewhat, and the lack of a plate knocks off another point.
I'll go along with your 5 / 10.
Well said, I think most of it was overcooked
That would turn your stomach
Being brought up on Cumberland pork sausages, my daughter referred to sausages like this as “ hotel sausages”
When I hear "let's give it go" it just makes me smile. Great video as always Gary.
Thanks so much! 👍
It was a good video, but I think he did this place a little dirty. For 14 GBP he got quite a lot of food, much of it made in house. He didn't apply the same price to quality ratio he has at other places!🤷
Sorry doesn't look good!Toast thin white bread!!It looks a brown mess!! Not for me!(Or for you)!!😢
I apply the same logic everywhere my friend, it wasn't the best breakfast in the world sadly... not much else I could say!
@@GaryEats But it was (relatively) cheap. You can't have your haggis and eat it too!😔

Awesome! Thank you!
Can't really complain about a Scottish breakfast from a Canadian place which also offers an Argentinan breakfast and a Mexican one. Wrong choice for a full Scottish.
Maybe but it has great ratings Duncan
@@GaryEats would you go to a Turkish for a full Scottish? I do love the channel by the way. And yes I am Scottish.
Fair comment but it's on the menu, if it's on the menu you have to get it right.
I don’t think I would want to eat out of a skillet, I would prefer a hot plate.
I think you could be right but it has great reviews
@@GaryEatsso does a Dyson vacuum but I don’t want one.
Canadian food is generally s@@te.
@GaryEats word of mouth cafe down in Leith. Technically, Leith is part of Edinburgh, but not really.

Why would you go to a Canadian diner for a Scottish breakfast?
Watch the video, I did say that but if it's on the menu...
Crazy
For the same reason why you drink Brazilian coffee when you live in UK!Why not??!!! Yee-haw! Gary's a badass who lives on a knifes edge and decides to live his life to the max!
For the same reason somebody climbed Mount Everest...because it is there.
You are right Sharon, maybe not the best choice
Well said, so where should he have gone?
We Canadians do love our Moose. By the title of the video I'm assuming the food was just average. No matter, looking forward to watching the review. Hope everyone is enjoying the day.

Thanks for another epic video, all the best to you and the wee cameraman 💚🕊️
Thank you Lisa. I wish it was better. You're lovely, thank you!
Thank you very, very much for the advice and thank you, Gail ❤️🌹❤️
I know it's down to personal taste but I detest beans with breakfast. They infect everything with that sickly sweet tomato sauce. If you're still up here, try Kilimanjaro in Edinburgh for their 'Killi breakfast', Gary. It's fab.
I’ll take a look for my next visit 👍🏴
Susan here
That’s the last place I’d go for breakfast
It looks like an industrial estate
The best thing about your brekky was that view of the bridges…wow

Lots of grease at the bottom of that skillet it didn't look like an appetising breakfast. Mug of tea with a bag thrown in £3 You found something positive from a negative start good for you. You need sugar you're sweet enough Gary. Great review as always just love your take on food. Thank you🎉🎉

It looked that way but it wasn’t me 😂
@GaryEats that usually happens when you try to break off a slice from the block straight from the freezer 😐 the amount of times it's happened to me I now wrap each slice separately before freezing
It's a Scottish one not a Canadian one
Hi Gary, I admire your approach to reviewing, even when not a good experience. I left a review recently on a well-known website that I bitterly regret. I was honest, but I was unkind. That is your strength, kindness, and you're a better person than me for it
Well said you! We’ve all done it. But we are all better people for admitting it, and trying to do better! Cheers from Oz 👍🙏🦘
Ah Richard.
It happens.

Thanks so much!!
Glad you enjoyed it Gerwyn even if the food was haphazard!
I can understand your disappointment, I think a Scottish Breakfast should be, 2 slices Back Bacon, I Lorne Sausage, 1 Black Pudding, I Egg, I Potato Scone, simple, no Haggis, no Beans, no Hash Brown.
No haggis, Bill? Surprised by that!
@@GaryEats Fried Haggis, no thank you. Served with Tatties and Neeps, perfection. Of course you can get a bad Haggis which is awful but a good Haggis is great. Hope you are enjoying your visit to Scotland.
Thanks for the excellent reviews Gary ... 🍴
Glad you like them!
Fried mushrooms in butter with fresh thyme and lemon juice and nicely seasoned. It's a winner Gary ❤
Now that sounds delicious!
£16 for that mess is a disgrace
Hopefully a bad day at the office
Dead right @bblair2627 I've had tastier looking breakfasts in Morrisons for a fiver with endless tea refills :)
Sounds like Down The Hatch belongs Down in the Dumps, Real Canadian Resto's are much better owner probably has no roots in Canada he/she should know better.
Hopefully, it was a bad day at the office
Looks like the local blind school prepared that.
It wasn’t good presentation, Peter
I’d definitely serve the beans separately in a dish, maybe along with the roasted tomato, those things are gonna be messy and ruin the rest of the flavors in the skillet. They could work on the presentation and definitely raise the quality of the sausage and hash brown. Maybe even do something with the toast too, add some jam or something.
The presentation was very disappointing, and yes, the beans should’ve been served separate
Gary you legend your videos are all soo entertaining and I've told many of my friends to 'give it a go ' quoting you such a legend 🙌 ❤ 👏
I really appreciate that, Stanley thank you very much
Oh dear, that Scottish breakfast looked as if they have just opened up a supermarket breakfast pack and dumped it into a skillet. I love black pudding and haggis but TBH, even cheap ones taste good. As I said, it all looked to be out of a breakfast packet. The bridges, Forth Rail Bridge, Forth road bridge, and finally, The Queensferry Crossing. You were paying for the view Gary!! 😀
Looks like it's an a cross between a garden centre and a industrial estate 😮
I think the scenery was absolutely fantastic, but unfortunately the breakfast wasn’t
You know Gary, the first impressions of any meal is the presentation. You eat with you eyes. Sometimes youi just can't get past that. This is the case with " Down the Hatch" .

Hopefully this brought you back some wonderful memories, Philip
Quite a price for a dog's dinner ga totally agree with you on the beans plus the scraping sound of cutlery on cast iron 😮

That would be amazing Harry and thank you x
As a Canadian, my dad taught me two lessons that were my favorites: "don't start a fight but finish them" and "don't order fish in a steakhouse or vice versa". Now, I actually find your review MORE interesting that you tried a perhaps "secondary" item outside the specialty of this Canadian restaurant and I hope to see more! But, as a rule for when one goes out for a great meal themselves, stick with the specialties of the particular restaurant is a good rule of thumb.
I did want to try some other dishes, but unfortunately, none available Matt
Gary, you may not be old enough, but 1958 hit record "Hoots Mon" had lyrics "There's a moose loose aboot this hoose"!
Unfortunately, I don’t know this one, Keith
What the Canadian diner gave you wasn't a proper Scottish Breakfast. There are plenty of cafes and farmhouse type restaurant that serves a Full Scottish Breakfast. The ingredients used in the Canadian diner breakfast were mass produced in the factory.
I understand your point but it has excellent reviews
Cheers,
Paul Connors
New Jersey, USA
Mix for Yorkshire pudding! You mean eggs milk and flour?? I am sure you have those in the USA 😅
Sorry.
It has amazing reviews online so I'm quite surprised
I was wondering how they could make an "Authentic Poutine" without the cheese curds from here.
Thank you for the observations
My dad loved beans but would never ever have them for breakfast he called them a plate filler....
We'd have 2-3 steak Lorne, 2 rashers of back bacon, black pudding, fruit pudding, tattie scone, fried egg and fried bread and that was you to dinner time on a Saturday as you were stuffed.
@@petersmith7126 forgot about fried bread, haven’t had it in years but it was nice
Yes, Ayrshire back bacon for a Scottish breakfast, we only used streaky for kilted sausages or on top of the turkey in our house!

It was a lot of money for not the best food.

If you are going to specialise in breakfasts you need to hit the mark and sausages are massive part of that,a breakfast should never suffer from lack of taste
Agreed entirely!
Now you can understand how much I dislike mushrooms, Philip, unfortunately it was a bit disappointing
An odd choice for first Scottish cooked breakfast. A Canadian chain instead of an independent one of which there must be loads. Still, at £16 i would expect a fair bit more. Love the channel and you have definitely given me some great food trips.

Arbroath Smokies, Loch Fyne kippers, and Finnan Haddie make good breakfasts.

The price charged for tea never ceases to amaze me. Half a pint of boiled water and a tea bag, milk and sugar to taste, 15p tops? Sell 100 cups of tea a day and thats £100,000 gross profit a year.

As a Scottish Canadian, I was thrilled that you found this place in Edinburgh. I have to wonder what the "Canadian breakfast" would have been like. I will be coming to Newcastle early next year
If I want a good Scottish Breakfast, I'd make it myself.
That sounds absolutely wonderful. Please send me your address and I’ll be around. 😂😂👍👍🏴🏴

Hi Gary, that's a Scottish breakfast I would have been tempted to complain about, but you can't complain about the breakfast looking like a crash site. Thank you for taking one for the team and have an absolutely wonderful rest of your day and speak to you soon. Email incoming tomorrow.
Yes it wasn't the best Frank, it was mostly the presentation which ruined the breakfast!
I actually liked the presentation, but it was pointless as the skillet wasn’t hot so it didn’t serve any purpose
WHAT a gentleman you are Gary. Not a very good review. But as always, you were VERY polite . AND you remained positive throughout, hoping for something to save it. Thank you
Thanks so much!! Take care Lynn
deserves a medal for picking the positives out of that. looked an absolute mess.
You should have stayed in Edinburgh for your breakfast Gary. Still, good reviews generally do hold weight. No one knows wether they like it if they don't try. Thanks for the review mate
I went here because it has fantastic reviews online online so I hope it was a bad day at the office
Love how you always look for the positives despite less than great food. (PS loved seeing the forth bridge which I abseiled off of for charity earlier this year)
That is absolutely amazing well done to you, Amanda
Gary 5 is a fair rating for a baked bean breakfast. Love the way you say the sausage was overdone, burnt more likely Lol. And its a crime not serve baked beans apart, you don't get mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy served over your fish and chips. Nice one Gary
Yes I couldn't give it anymore sadly Michael
I will definitely be trying a Canadian diner next year 🇨🇦🇨🇦
I thought the same… virtually nothing Canadian on the menu. Very strange.
@@JonB1995 Half the menu was Poutine🤷🏼♀️
A small section of the menu was Poutine, a single Canadian fast food item. Most of the remaining space is generic American bar food

“Not as cold as I thought!” Talk about damning with faint praise…It looked absolutely Baltic -and the food was over cooked. The toast should be on a separate plate. The Lorne sausage seemed as if it had been gnawed by something in the kitchen. 😮
Yeah agree..as a retired breakfast chef/cook that ain't good enough..still better looking than Gordon Ramsey's effort
Not cold to be fair Rosemary
Don't understand why you would go to a Canadian Diner to try a Scottish breakfast.
Because I was recommended to, like I say on every single video
Please don’t assume that all Full Scottish Breakfasts are like this! Bravo for getting through it.
Thank you and understand Alistair
At that price there’s no excuse for poor quality sausages. It’s penny pinching to use low quality products. There’s still profit to make using better quality items and more chance of a repeat customer. Thanks for giving us the usually high quality honest review. All the best Pete 👍
I was surprised that the ingredients will not have a better quality Pete
Being a Yank and never been to Scotland, I had no idea what haggis was so I checked out the ingredients and decided to definitely give it a miss.
That's your loss
Go on, let’s give it a go 😂
Sausages aside, tipping the beans right in the middle was not the wisest move. Onwards and upwards as always, Gary. Safe travels 😀
Thanks Jay 👍
Great review Gary. Always balanced. Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much, Daniel
