7:30 Last record was "7:35.579" (By a Model S plaid) and "7:33.35" (By a Porsche Taycan Turbo S) if you're wondering. The record for non-electric "large executive car" (Oberklasse) the Model S would fit in, was "7:27.800" (By a Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+). This run even beat the record by the BMW M3 Touring (which was "7:35.060") - which is in a different class.

The tesla plaid has 1,000hp and the other cars i named have 400hp less then the plaid. Yet when they all used street tires those cars beat it. The semi slicks on the track pack plaid alone shaves off 10-15 sec. The track pack then posted a 7:25

Many will point to the fact that the car has a higher top speed, which led to a faster lap time. But in fact, only 2 seconds were gained over the back straight. The other 8 seconds gained were most likely from the R compound semi slick tires, and better braking performance. Credit to where credit is due. They've made great improvements to the car to make it withstand the track. 10 years ago, a Model S down the back straight would have throttled its power down to just 120kw, at which the car would be passed by a Golf Gti. Instead here, the Model S hits 260kph at the Audi Gantry. In comparison the Panorama Turbo S was going at just 228kph at that point, 260kph for the gt2rs. Is the Model S a great track car now? of course not, it's still too heavy, and it doesn't look like the driver here is having much fun, but again, not like a GT63SE is much fun to drive on track either. Thus making the Model S Plaid the fastest 4-door sedan, not just in a straight line, but outright. Huge respect for this accomplishment by Tesla. A momentous demonstration of your progress, and even as someone that has been quite neutral towards your brand, I'm feeling a sense of pride for the progress. First is was just silly 0-60 times, but now your in the big leagues and even winning. Looking forward to the Roadster having a go.
Although, a lot of Tesla fans should still see the difference between a super-sportscar and a family sedan when they talk as if the Model S is superior to more expensive 911s and Ferraris, because it has 4 seats while out-accelerating them, when the whole point of those sports car is to have great handling and be fun and engaging to drive because of not having 4 seats (somewhere the Model S will naturally never compare to said cars.)

For a family sedan to almost match top sports cars like the Nissan GTR and 911 GT2 RS from 10 years ago.
I wonder how a family sedan (any) can ever compete with the sports legends of its time - here approx +/- 2013. The question is how? The second is: in what and why?
The Plaid should go head to head with the Taycan in the first place as it will be 18 months since the Taycan lacked 404HP + 570Nm and was 434lb heavier and won !!!
So far, interested parties had to pay USD 20,000 to modify the family car for the circuit. Tesla cashed in and turned the Plaid into a non-production car that can't go on the road because it has racing tires that are not allowed in the EU. Of course, the elapsed time is only calculated for another category - Non-series/non-road-legal. But Tesla knew that. On the other hand, Plaid has nothing left to save because Taycan ended it.
The car brands and models you mention are legends... Titans of their time, paper outsiders at the beginning, who eliminated competition that was stronger and more experienced... that's why they became legends.
While I have no reason to be enamored with the Plaid, I have to say that the acceleration at 1/8 mile was very impressive and breathtaking. I never dreamed that 1000HP would be so impressive again.

@@Mijanboy Yeah. If you say that's non-road legal race grade tyres, that sounds a bit like cheating from Tesla. Improvement in tyre tech is also in general a big part of the reason why hot saloons of today in general can match the supercars from 10-15 years ago as well.

I don't know it was my imagination but I think I could see a bunch of less ideal driving maneuvers in the beginning and then the driver "warmed up" and used the extensions of the road only if necessary. So cool that the stress of the wheels doesn't get covered by the engine noise and you can hear how much the tires have to handle getting this heavy battery pack around corners.
It looks like driving such a heavy car needs very different driving skills than a light an annoying combustion engine powered car. Funny to see a Plaid with a round steering wheel ... would definitely also be my preference when racing, because if it gets out of control you have no chance to stabilize it with a yoke. I think there was quite some potential to gain a few extra seconds, especially in the beginning, but I would also not go too close to the limit with such a fantastic car that is also your daily driver.

Not true. The regular tesla model s plaid posted a 7:35 .. the taycan turbo s posted a 7:33 .. porsche beat the plaid when both used street tires . tesla "Track pack" cheated it had to use track tire semi slicks (GoodYear Eagle SuperCar 3Rs) that are only used for track times not for street use to beat the porsche taycan, panamera turbo s, m5cs,m3cs, and some other 4 door sedans that all used STREET TIRES. The tesla plaid has 1,000hp and the other cars i named have 400hp less then the plaid. Yet when they all used street tires those cars beat it. The semi slicks on the track pack plaid alone shaves off 10-15 sec. The track pack then posted a 7:25
Think how embarrassing that is that a car with 1000hp couldn't beat a 400hp less taycan. BMW/Porsche design and handling is on another planet.
