🧐Frequently Asked Questions About Our Online Lessons:
Q❓: I have no experience with katana. Will I still be able to catch up?
A💡: You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons.
Seki Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully instruct you on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the past lessons so you can watch what every other student has learned. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Seki Sensei will be happy to give you feedback.
Q❓: What is the right length of the Iaito (zinc alloy training katana) I should use?
A💡: Please purchase an Iaitō at least two blocks longer than the standard length.
The standard length for Seki Sensei is about 177cm, so he should use a 2.45 Shaku long katana. However, he uses a 2.6 Shaku-long katana that is supposed to be used by someone 190cm tall. If the katana is too short, it becomes too easy to draw, which is not good for training.
Q❓: Can I join even if I belong to a different Ryuha style?
A💡: Yes, it’s not a problem at all.
The Seki Sensei himself has trained in more than five styles and various other weapons. If you don’t want others to know that you are participating, you can join the online lessons with your camera off. To have the Sensei check your progress, you can send us a video of you practicing.

The perception needed to know the distance needed for the Eagle's Wings, to hit with the katana's tip and allow the wakizashi to pass through, has to be intense. Seki Sensei is sublime.

What I really like about this video, was how Seki-Sensei closes the kata. I can best describe it like a Super Robot letting out steam and returning from his battle form into resting mode. The way, the feets are slowly pulled under the Hakama with very little movement of the upper body... It really sell an impression of body control.

    • @unixtohack
      @unixtohack 16 дней назад +4

Indeed !!! as an aikido practitionar ‘closing’ a kata is mostly forgotten … the loss of zanshin or simply awake isn’t seen at the end …

the shishi, rather than real lions, is more like stone lions we can find in front of temples. they behave differently from the real ones. maybe the sensei can talk about shishi and other mythological animals in one video?

In regards to Tiger fighting Dragon, it's worth noting that this typically refers to the concept of yin-yang/in-yo (tiger being yin/in. dragon represents yang/yo). Makes sense then that the dragon is in jodan and the tiger is in sha or waki.

In European longswordsmanship, there exists the Ox Stance. It's a stance where you hold the sword high and offset to the side with the point towards the target. Sound familiar?

This is fascinating, but I'd love to see Seki Sensei sparring with a peer or near-peer master, assuming any are still alive in this day and age. Many of these Kata are interesting to watch and very well-thought through, but I'd love to see how Seki Sensei would alter/proceed from the original Kata movements if his opponent was actually responding in a challenging way as opposed to the predictable way that is in training.
