    🧐Frequently Asked Questions About Our Online Lessons:
    Q❓: I have no experience with katana. Will I still be able to catch up?
    A💡: You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons.
    Seki Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully instruct you on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the past lessons so you can watch what every other student has learned. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Seki Sensei will be happy to give you feedback.
    Q❓: What is the right length of the Iaito (zinc alloy training katana) I should use?
    A💡: Please purchase an Iaitō at least two blocks longer than the standard length.
    The standard length for Seki Sensei is about 177cm, so he should use a 2.45 Shaku long katana. However, he uses a 2.6 Shaku-long katana that is supposed to be used by someone 190cm tall. If the katana is too short, it becomes too easy to draw, which is not good for training.
    Q❓: Can I join even if I belong to a different Ryuha style?
    A💡: Yes, it’s not a problem at all.
    The Seki Sensei himself has trained in more than five styles and various other weapons. If you don’t want others to know that you are participating, you can join the online lessons with your camera off. To have the Sensei check your progress, you can send us a video of you practicing.

    Seki Sensei says he was just lucky, but in e-sports (or gaming in general) there's this (semi-joking) saying: "Skill is when luck becomes a habit."
    Sure, there may be some degree of luck involved, but if you have the skills, you can manipulate the odds of certain random-seeming (or not fully controllable) events in your favor in various ways.

    • @miqvPL
      @miqvPL Месяц назад +7

      similar in boxing (although some credit the manga Hajime no Ippo for coining the saying) is "there are no lucky punches". Like your hand doesnt magically on its own appear on the opponent's weak point in case of a "lucky punch", throwing it was a conscious decision, or a trained reaction. I hate when people say "he lost but it was to a lucky punch", such a loser talk excuse.

    I like how the closest either sensei came to a victory was a single draw. Show just how much of a master Seki-Sensei himself is but those under him are no slouches either. Really puts into perspective how much anime and movies oversell how a real sword fight would actually look.
    I remember hearing somewhere, probably in another Seki-Sensei video actually, that in some traditions, students are first taught with large weapons like polearms and spears to get used to the idea of using long weapons and then are gradually brought down in size to regular swords, short swords, daggers/knives and then finally completely unarmed. That way you're always prepared for whatever weapons you find yourself using or fighting against, because you've gotten used to the different lengths of different weapons and know how to combat them while at disadvantage

      If I am not wrong this is how FMA teaches martial arts, more specifically Kali, if this is true and I can find a source, I'll send it, but it is interesting how martial arts develop similar styles of combat training to acclimate fighters

    This is a wonder to see for my practice. I study Fiore, Godinho, and Destreza mainly, and it is lovely to see how similar Seki-sensei's footwork and positions mirror Destreza in these bouts.
    Destreza is a Spanish style of swordsmanship that is more defensive and ideal for 1-vs-1 as it uses circular footwork and sword work instead of linear. It was characterised by use of shorter swords, upright posture, and distance management. If you watch a Destreza fight with rapiers you will find them circling and constantly changing line of attack, especially when against longer rapiers.
    I am not at all suggesting Seki-sensei does Destreza or is even aware of it, nor that he copied it or something. But rather, it is really fun to see how his approach resembles it to my eye, while in previous videos his approach has been a bit different.

    • @naciuochoa
      @naciuochoa 24 дня назад +2

      Destreza student here, I’ve always noticed what you mention, and not in Seki Sensei style only, but in aikido too - circles, may-ai, preference for “natural” rather than “violent “, defensive movements and life-preservation…

    Seki-sensei with two katana against wakizashi is just overwhelming. Just continuous "feint with one sword, strike with the other" or "synchronous attacks from opposite ends". Can't imagine what it's like to stand across from that. The amount of processing power it requires to keep that away from you let alone try to attack in that situation is just. Oof.

    My son made a spear of bamboo today while we were working. We have practice tomahawks that we train with. I got the tomahawk and we fought, spear against single and dual tomahawks. Then we come in and watch this masterful display of utilizing weapon length. I had told him to get inside the spear wielder's reach and the tomahawk can be superior. I don't know what I'm doing, comparatively, and it was beautiful to watch; he puts it into practical application more efficiently than I can verbalize it.

    Nito is absolutely not an advantage if you aren’t very comfortable with them

      If I recall right Musashi thought that two weapons in duel does not give any real advantage, but is viable on battlefield.

    3:23 Why didn't Tsukada Sensei use the katana in his right hand
    to cut Seki Sensei's left shoulder?

    • @SalinasIT
      @SalinasIT Месяц назад +1

      He felt the presure and lost his compusture, and in that position he maybe could made a cut to Seki Senseis arm, but still get stabed in the chest or the troaht, that is why experience and cold mind is needed in a duel.

    Would you guys be able to try a series where Seki sensei actually tries to do many of the techniques he shows in your videos in a live spar?
    Respectful, although they are very impressive, when you guys do live spars, we tend not to see many of the impressive techniques you guys show.
    My assumption is that it's because in a live spar it is very fast paste and ultimately strikes to the head, wrist, body and thrust strikes are the most effective. And more elaborate techniques can be too difficult to perform in such a short space of time.
    This was a fun video and i enjoyed it.

    I feel like having them doing Nito with two Daito is only on the surface an advantage, but for me it rather looks like a great disadvantage. Firstly I don't know any Ryuha that seriously practices Nito with two Daito, so it looks like Seki senseis Students also never done that before. The sword in their left hand is more of a hindrance and they are unable to use it fully with their left hand. Basically Seki Sensei has only to look out for an opening and can force them into Jujutsu, grabbing them and using the Wakizashi freely. I feel like it would have been more of a challenge for Seki Sensei would both engage him with one Daito alone.

      @Count.Saruman Месяц назад +1

      The way two swords is usually done is with a wakizashi in the dominant hand instead of a daito. In HEMA it's the other way round, with the parrying dagger in the offhand.

    what if the person with the longer weapon just put his 2 katanas straight out and started stabbing and ran straight at the sensei? I’m wondering what to do with an enemy who runs at you with his sword extended along its entire length and the tip of the sword is constantly aimed at you?

    This is in no way meant to be a slight to Seki Sensei's immense skill and experience, but it certainly doesn't help Tsukada Sensei and Kurosawa Sensei out that Seki Sensei is also a bigger guy than either of them. He's both taller and stronger which brings an advantage when trying for physical inside fighting like he was doing.
    As I said, this doesn't reflect in any way on his skill. I'm certain that against a larger opponent he'd still have a number of ways to win with the same weapons as in this video.

    With all due respect, it doesn't look like dual katanas are an advantage to anyone here. I just watched all of them seem to forget they had the second on when their opponent put them on the back foot and was in range of the second one.

    I imagine what it would have looked like, had you had protection on. I mean, every time I saw Seki Sensei charging in with a wakizashi against two long blades pointed at him, I almost immediatevly envisioned him stabbed in the face, chest, and stomach. Or pummelled in the head, when upclose. That's what would have happened to me anyways.
    But, at the same time, I realize it would have been largely unsafe to do with Fukuro-shinai at full speed.

    • @yangcheng-jyun8542
      @yangcheng-jyun8542 Месяц назад +2

      Seki-sensei thrusts with fukuroshinai very often, as in the video. It's just that he can found the perfect space for him to safely charging in.

    So i gotta ask though i have some ideas. Why Seki Sensei?
    As i understan Seki typically means "one part of a pair" OR "an impasse at Go"
    Im leaning towards the second meaning as Sensei is an honorific for "teacher/instructor"
    So is the intent then to mean "a teacher of the impasse of a martial art?"
