For anyone wondering, the 2023 Wilderness does not have a pinch weld around the spare area like his does, so the Ultraswing fits perfectly without having to bend anything. Also, we have the factory suspension with 245/65R17 BFG K02's and Motegi MR118s, there is maybe the tiniest bit of suspension sag but it probably wouldn't really be noticeable if you weren't really looking for it.
my 2023 OBW absolutely DOES have this pinch weld around the rear wheel well ... my guess is you don't have the OEM hitch if the pinch weld is not an issue for you.
Hey Josh, it's Mark @palubaru_adventures. Great video as usual. I went with the DirtCom trail swing and absolutely love it. BUT, for those that purchase it, you cannot just simply bend the pinch weld out of the way because their wedge system tightens from the rear, not the front like the Rig'd version. I had to notch and box in a space into the tire tub to make it work. I have pics on my Instagram for those wanting to see it. I too am looking for way to relocate the rear cam. I don't want to do a separate aftermarket camera and display. Surely there is a way to get it done. PLEASE keep us informed. Great content man. Hope to see it in person some day.
@MarkPalacios Hey Mark, what were the dimensions of the fabricated piece of metal you made for the tub? I have a dirtcom trail swing coming in about a month and will need to do this on my wilderness. Im really glad I saw your comment here or I would've never known!
You used an impact? You should have used a torque wrench set at 100lbs as the instructions say. The rattle is clearly coming from the pinch weld sheet metal that you bent, its rubbing on the front of the mount where the wedge is, you can actually see it touching in the video. Also, there should be two 5/8 pin holes, it looks like you pushed it in too far, use the forward (first) hole and don't push in it that far.
Was going to install a dirt swing out on my forester but I got a bigger tire and was able to fit it in the stock spare location. Not a fan of losing the crosstraffic alerts and rear camera so I’m gonna opt out of this one
I understand the need for this with an SUV, or a midsize pickup. I opted not to spring for it for my F-150- I’ve got my spare vertical in the front of the bed and it’s just fine. The weight savings, not losing the backup camera, and especially the price are all huge dealbreakers. $2000 for a tire carrier?! C’mon.
I totally get your point and having that extra space in the bed makes a huge difference. The cameras in the Subaru are absolute garbage so luckily I'm not missing too much of anything on that front. I appreciate the input!
I wish instead of that table, there was a slim box that would hold a double burner stove and some small storage. I want to it to be ready to cook. Instead of the fuel packs I would have a water can for drinking and cleaning. Ewwww, you just said it sags the car, is it sagging without the tire on? I don't intend to use it as a tire carrier. Sagging would screw the look.
Hey Josh, What's your experience with the back up camera or the Reverse Automatic Braking system with the Ultra Swing? Thanks. I have an OBW coming in Feb 23
Congrats on the OBW! Back up camera with any tire carrier is pretty much useless and I haven't found a good way to re-locate the camera yet to make it usable. That's a huge downside to having larger tires and needing a tire carrier. I turned the RAB system off long ago when I was carrying my mountain bike and had the emergency brake lock up on me backing out of the garage. My best advice would be do the same when you have anything attached to the rear of the car.
Rigged should come up with an app and when your phone is connected to the vehicle via Bluetooth and you put it in reverse it pops up on your phone to view backup camera. You could just mount your phone on your dash and they could sell the camera and universal mounting bracket
Was looking at the Rig'D for a little bit a while back, ended up getting the Dirtcom Trailswing, and I will be setting mine up essentially the same way as yours once I get it with the rotopax off to the side, and a fold out table. It's a bit more expensive starting at 1,750, but I like the benefits that it has over the Rig'd and Wilco tire carriers. Definitely gonna be annoying without the backup camera though, but I can live without it.
I never even heard about the dirtcom swing until the comments in this video. I’m going to have to check them out. I’m in the same boat with the rear camera, I can live without it to have the other things I want. Thanks for the input!
I'd start looking for scratch's on area's that are rubbing causing the noises. Some foam insulation or rubber spacers should help. For me the elephant in the room is, do you plan on using the table to cook on???
Ohhhh good catch finding that strut bolt. Now that you've beefed the OB up & all the extra weight have you thought about a trans & oil cooler yet @@roamingwithjosh ?
Hey Josh, I am wondering if you have already fixed the problem of back up camera yet? Could you share your solution when you done? I am planning to buy the ultra swing for my OBW too but back up camera means a lot to me.
Im just planning to squeeze my spare into the oem compartment until a back up cam is integrated into the spare carrier. But how do the additions affect your OBW's fuel economy?? Just the tires and lift have already made a noticeable difference for me and since this is also my daily driver im trying to balance my setup between being fuel efficient as well as capable without having to take off of swap aspects of my setup when we are overlanding
We are currently at 19.2 MPG with this setup and honestly we didn't lose much going with the lift and the spare tire carrier. We were getting 19.8 before we put the lift or carrier on. I'm pretty impressed with that. Thanks for the comment, Marquis!
It’s a great spare tire solution and more… so it may be rated for 10,000 lbs towing but the OB Wilderness I believe is limited to 3,500 lbs. and I think the tongue weight limit is 350 lbs. if so, does not the weight of this spare tire rack and options and gas filled cans all add up and use up some of that rating leaving little left to actually be able to tow anything?
@@kimmyyimmel2010 yes the tow weight doesn’t change but I would think the amount of weight what your towing puts downward on the tongue cannot be ignored.
I've been looking at the Dirtcom Trailswing but the price...WOW. Now that I think about it the stuff I put in my spare tire compartment might weigh less than the spare tire itself?? I wonder if some type of enclosed aluminum storage box in place of the tire (maybe with with shelves?) be a better option for me? ** A swing out storage box... there must be one available somewhere. ** Can anyone link me? **
I never even thought to out a storage box back there, that’s definitely a good idea. Maybe we can get someone to fabricate something and see how it works?
You wont like the price on these either lol. You might be able to buy a swing out hitch adapter for cheaper (around $380) and find a way to get your own box on there. How did you secure the aux light controller? Did you have to drill into the dash?
Used double sided 3M tape and pressed it onto the dash. Never fell off a single time.
