Repairing 80+ Years Of Frame Damage - Schroll 1932 Ford Coupe

  • In the last update on the Schroll 32 you saw Matt was able to blast and grind away all of the brackets that were no longer needed on the frame. Today Matt is going to work on taking a step forward and repairing all of the damage to the frame. While there is not a lot of damage over all, there is still a few areas that need patches welded in. Matt also addresses the large hump on the top of the frame for the steering box, and he adds some welds to a few of the brackets that will be used. Getting this 1932 Ford Coupe back on the road is going to be a lot of work, but its gonna be worth it!!

Glad to still see younger guys building pre war hot rods, I'm 42 and there are not many guys my age messing with the older stuff, I started a channel AC Designs Garage to show us building my dads 32 roadster, and some pre 1972 stuff lol. Matt
    You are right that back in the day we used what ever we could get our hands on to make a hot rod better. In the mid 1970's I was working on a 1940 Pontiac 2 door and needed to get a steering box that didn't have play in it so I went to the junk yard and got a 1965 GTO steering box and a 1966 2 plus 2 steering shaft and installed them on my 1940 pontiac with the original steering wheel. I also had to source a gas tank, back bumper and headlight switch from the junk yard ( I was in the Air Force and didn't have a lot of money) but I had a nice cruser when I was done. Thanks for your you tube channel! Even us old guys can learn new skills.

      Sounds about right! I like to remind people of this stuff when working on these cars and embrace the quirkiness of the oddball parts they used. It's the nice part about it being a hot rod and not a factory-correct restoration!

    Awesome video Matt. I've been spending quite a bit of time with my old frame. Fun to try and figure out why there are holes in certain places from hot rodding over time. I also decided to think ahead a little and put some 3" tube in my cross members as an exhaust pass through. That seems to be a problem with the old hotrods getting an exhaust under the floor. Maybe I'll use them, maybe someone 80 years from now will be happy I did it :)

    For the three bolts that hold the steering box through the frame rails, how about turning up three bungs/ spacers to be inserted and welded in place? They could be made with the spacer length incorporated, so no stacks of washers or loose spacers would be used. It would clean up those big ugly holes, look better, be stronger, and easier to assemble. The frame is looking nicer all the time.

    • @IronTrapGarage
      @IronTrapGarage  3 года назад

      I was thinking of a similar idea except making a boxed-in spacer type section that would get welded into the frame so it is a broader area than just those narrow little spacers. Either way I'll be doing something like that but I really need to get the body in place to double check I like where/how they had the steering box sitting. Never took notice before. Great idea!

LOL The bolts would have come loose from the Ch rail not being flat. I am surprised how well that chassis came up as looking at it before i would have written it off. I think Mr Schroll would be happy with what you are doing and glad its being done properly, not that he has a say in the matter now. Or the box had to be moved out to give clearance to one of the engines installed.

    I'm curious why you used the laser at the top of the rad and not at the bottom? Those mounting brackets could be at different lengths below the frame causing the rad to be installed out of square to the frame...and therefore not be in center at the top of the rad.

      The last went down the center of the crossmembers and up across the entire height of the radiator. I was looking over the entire thing.
