I don't plan to cover Tom Clancy, as for the Mandalorian vid, I probably won't get to it until Season 2 is approaching. I don't really plan to cover Star Wars much in the future, only Legends sometimes.
Most of the info in this vid comes from "A Grain of Truth", a short story in "The Last Wish" Suggested Reading Order for the Witcher Books: The Last Wish Sword of Destiny Blood of Elves Time of Contempt Baptism by Fire Tower of the Swallow Lady of the Lake Season of Storms
@@brimstonesulfur5013 It's a midquel, taking place after most of the short stories in The Last Wish book, except for "The Witcher" short story (where Geralt removes the Striga curse from a princess) and its aftermath. But it is still recommended to read it last because the epilogue for that book is basically epilogue for the entire saga (so if you read it in advance, you'll be spoiled the ending for The Lady of the Lake book). So basically like CivilizationEx stated above, read in publication order.
Citzen_J Fun fact: fairy tales from our world exist in some shame or form in the Witcher world, though theirs are much more....brutal versions of The stories.
@@knightboulegard5483 For example the naive prince and knight-errant trying to save the princess survivor in a tower ''cursed by black sun'' and brutally tortured, and she escapes to get her brutal revenge, no ''They Lived Happily Ever After".
It can be fit into a lot of places without another flashback. Could be when Geralt is bringing Ciri to Kaer Morhen or when he is off doing his own this as Ciri is training with Yen. That's only of the top of my head.
I'm glad you're doing a series on this because I remember playing through The Witcher games and they always mention about fairy tales that I know about like Snow White, Cinderella and even beauty and the beast but I can never find anything concrete some glad you are doing a series on this
The Witcher s1 was missing a sense of world building. It would have been better if they used S1 as a bunch of short stories, getting to know the lay of the land and players on the board, which I felt was lacking in the show
Sapkowski is a great writer. All of his short stories from the first book were really well written. The translations were on point as well. Btw, very creepy whisper. Good video. Looking forward to more Witcher content.
4:09 & that frog prince was in Witcher 3. Of course a Fd up Dark twisted version Witcher style LOL This is why I love Witcher & Berserk so much. The attention to details & how some stories insipired from IRL tales & history with such great cares, even in a darker version of it. Thank goodness the Netflix show will adapt this in season 2. Definitely on of my most fav stories in Witcher books, especially with the epic fight in it.
For me, the reason why both of them are so good is despite how dark and fucked up the fantasy is, there is humanity in it, which is a thing that a lot of try-hard writers forget about when they overindulge in the edgyness
Inspired… Or sometimes straight up copied (“One ring to bind them all” is a verbatim line from The Witcher 2). Makes me confused sometimes as to how much of our cultural essence (vodka, Cinderella, Ragnarok, etc) is still present in The Witcher
Listening to this brought it back to when I listened to this part of the book when I got the audiobook from audible. I thought it was a very interesting and entertaining part of the novel. Thanks for making this video.
I believe Geralt mention The story of the beauty and the beast in blood and wine DLC. He says something like “you know actually the story of the beauty and beast is” but Synna cuts him off
Hey man, thanks for another fantastic summary of the Witcher series (loved it!). Looking forward to the next one! Rumor has it that the Neflix series will adapt this story in season 2, though not just Geralt but with Ciri as well (on their way to Kaer Morhen it seems). What are your thoughts on that?
This is my favorite, story in The Last Wish and I'm sad they could not use it in the show. But, I'm sure Disney would not have tolerated it. This was a great video CivilzationEx I hope we see more soon.
@@tylose875 Nothing, but some of the short stories in the first two books have similarity to fairy tales Disney owns. This one share things with Beauty and the Beast, Renfri's story in the books share things from Snow white, and there one more that share some of The little mermaid story. So, to avoid trouble with Disney, the show could not use all of Renfri's backstory, and I don't think they can use this story or The Little Mermaid one.
@@vampiregirl258 I doubt that's the case, just beacuse it uses the same premise as some of the Disney fairy tales is far from enough even for Big D to accuse them of something. If using similar premise was a problem, then Witcher 3 wouldn't have a ton of references to popular fairy tales. Netlix omitted this story simply because they tried to fit two books into one 8-episode season, and it's highly possible that they will appear in next seasons looking at how they already messed with the timeline.
They can't get in trouble for it for the same reason disney and marvel cant sue anyone over use of loki and thor. They are characters of mythology and folklore therefor they are public domain. All of disneys characters are ripped off from other cultures. Beauty snd and the beast was written by a french novelist before Walt Disney was born. So beauty and the beast is public domain and safe for you, me or anyone to use
Just finished listening to this in the audio book. The cool part about the short story books is that this entire story can be read in close to the amount of time it takes to watch this video.
I'm not a bookstan, but the same setup could have been used in the show. They tried to cut out exposition only to still have a lot of exposition anyway lol.
