*A Brief Note on Canon:*
Strictly speaking, canon for this universe is based solely on what the author has written or said. This includes the 5 main novels and 3 books of short stories, along with interviews and other writings like Dynasties, which contains his notes on certain royal families.
And while canon on this Channel will be similar, there will be some exceptions. So below I have outlined exactly what is considered Witcher canon for Civilization Ex.
Primary Canon:
This will be the main source of information for all videos. Almost all the information given will be from these sources.
Short Stories -
The Last Wish
Sword of Destiny
Season of Storms
Main Novels -
Blood of Elves
Time of Contempt
Baptism by Fire
Tower of the Swallow
Lady of the Lake
Other -
Andrzej Sapkowski Interviews
Assorted Andrzej Sapkowski Writings like "Dynasties"
Secondary Canon:
This will be from other books, non-netflix show and movies, roleplay games and comics, written by authors other than Andrzej Sapkowski. These sources will only occasionally be used, and only when there is very little information about a certain topic.
For example, almost no information exists about Werebbubbs in Primary Canon, so some minor points about them are taken from secondary sources.
In the rare occasion when Secondary canon is used, I will say or write qualifying words like "maybe" or "possibly". These words indicate that the information is not from a primary source and therefore cannot be considered 100% accurate.
Tertiary Canon:
This will be from the CD Projekt Red games. These sources will almost never be used, however many of the drawings in these videos will be based on the games, though they will usually be blended with book descriptions.
For example, Dandelion's look is based on the games, but his hair color is from the books.
The Witcher
The Witcher 2
The Witcher 3
All Expansions and DLCs
Gwent Trading Card Game
Thronebreaker
TV Canon:
The Netflix shows and movies will never be used as sources in these videos, UNLESS the title specifically says it will.
For example, with every new season of the Witcher show I will make a season recap based on the last season which will exclusively feature show canon material.
Hm... I can't help but think this order strange. I would have guessed CDPR to be the secondary. Understandable why it's not used but I cannot think of many, if any, things inbetween that would be better/closer/more appropriate to use. I guess that one polish commic fleshing out Sapkowski's idea of the betrayal of the School of the Cat might have some legitimacy... but I'm not sure what would put most other things peg above some of the CDPR related additions. Or what most of them would be. I am aware of some oficially published fanfictions, old polish comic adaptations, Hexer movie/series and some tabletop rpgs. (Presuming Dark Horse comics and World of the Witcher book falling under CDPR tertiary umbrella.) I don't see what would make them secondary above CDPR tertiary. Especially since despite inconsistencies and liberties, CDPR mostly tries to coexist with the books, whereas many things falling under secondary are adaptations which thus can and do diverge with the books and puts them closer to Netflix status. What then puts fanfiction/homage (only possible other books I can think off) or rpg manuals above CDPR? I guess the manuals by their nature probably flesh out more useful areas the games by their nature necessarily don't and have less contradictions/inconsistencies?
@@jankrizkovsky9446 I've chosen to prioritize other works over CDPR games mostly because the games go into the future while the other material largely expand upon the timeframe covered by the books. This specifically helps me more because I only plan to use the secondary level to expand upon areas that are not much covered in the primary canon. But even so, most of the secondary material I wont be using either, only the bare minimum when absolutely necessary to expand upon areas where there is little to no information. For example I will not cover any of the cat school info like their betrayal of the wolf school, but I will include small details from Secondary like the cat school being based out of Stygga Castle for a time.
Hey, Civ. Ex. I’ve been a fan for a long time, really love so much of your work. Could you do a video about the Yuuzhan Vong/Yuuzhan Vong War? Thanks for considering. Old school (Legends…) is so much more interesting than Disney.
Hey, thanks for the support! I agree, I like Legends far more than a lot of the newer stuff, which is why the vast majority of my Star Wars vids going forward will be Legends. I do plan to cover the Vong wars, in fact I was supposed to make those vids earlier this year but I ran out of time. Hopefully I will be able to do it the next time I cover Star Wars, which will likely be from January to March next year. :)
@@CivilizationEx awesome!
Suggested Reading Order for the Witcher Books:
The Last Wish
Sword of Destiny
Blood of Elves
Time of Contempt
Baptism of Fire
Tower of the Swallow
Lady of the Lake
Season of Storms
Hey i have the first Two and I read the first. I am also your fan For years and I am glad to see your Kind of videos. Besides that your videos are authentic because of animations and pictures. I have read ASIAF and Lotr Books it Took me a long time and when i see a detailed video Like yours I am impresed because there are Always informations that i have forgoten. I am impresed that Kind of determination.
Thank you! :)
@@CivilizationEx have you ever considered making your own world/story/series? I think that you Wold be a good writer because of your vast knowledge of fantasy and scfi.
I actually have made my own world, and written some stories in it, but this job keeps me pretty busy so I don't have much time to work on it. One day though I hope to start publishing my own books :)
@@CivilizationEx Nice. I Always had some fantasy visions in My head and I decided to write them down in october last year. Writing this story brought me Joy in the long and hard time of My life. I stoped For few months and then started writing again. I am writing ever since. Curently, i have 50k words and I am not even close to end od My first book. I plan to make a sequel if the first one Will be liked. What I Want to say is that you and other related content youtubers (mostly youtubers that are in "thrones effect" book) brought a New meaning to My life, without you My life would ne Bland. Thank you.
The Witcher has a great twist to many fables, like a Slavic Shrek. Not to mention the parallels between The North and Nilfgaard. Which represents Polands struggles against countries like Sweden, Russia and Germany.
The limited emotions of Witchers was always left open for debate. I believe they were just not used to people. Being reintroduced with no way as to interact with people and having minimal social skills with non Witcher’s.
Excellent timing on this one! I really enjoy your videos & I realize you're always getting requests to cover numerous expansive fictional universes, but if you have never looked into the Barsoom series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, I would strongly suggest it. The world's strange creatures, history & culture seem like they would be a great option to cover on a video. If you were to find it to your liking.
I'll look into it, thanks for the suggestion :)
Hey! Great video!!! Thanks very much!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
You are doing great work my friend. Witcher lore is very deep and sometimes more political then got. It deserves more recognition (and HBO)
thank you. i've been playing the game and there's SO MUCH canon to catch up on. I appreciate having the backstory summed up in one place for me. :)
The books are honestly the best out of all the mediums though. Don't miss them!
Very informative.
Love the channel, could you possibly do a video on the Elric of Melninbone series and the Eternal Champions that basically inspired a lot of the Witcher?
Suggestion - how about a vid on the underworld film history, as its very deep.
I love the Underworld series, I've wanted to cover that world for awhile. Hopefully I'll get to it some day.
@@CivilizationEx - GREAT
I just re-seen the bloodwars film an you get history + geography with every film i noted. I think the history goes back to over 1000 years + several nations, so theres lots of material.
What I wanna see from Witcher Netflix anime after this (hopefully great success):
+ Basically "Witchers Anthology" anime series (instead of movies) for each 1-2 year, to compensate the main live action series. Basically telling stories of witchers in many parts of the continent, building the Witchers gallery & world building lore. From characters, locations, bestiary, etc.
+ I wanna see majestic scenes of elves who are in war with unicorns LOL
Think you can do a video for the world history for avatar the last air bender?
CivEx!!!
Extremely well done and detailed although one detail is the cat eyes thing is not totally accurate as it says that their can switch form depending on the current need, the games took it to one extreme with permanent cat eyes and the series to another with permanent round pupils, which it shouldn't be.
This will be a strange request but pokemon universe could be an interesting one to do. This one was also very nice.
not a huge fan of the witcher series but i'll consume these videos like tictacs
I loved this the Witcher is one of my favorite games and books it's just a shame Netflix's screwed it up but I also like ur star wars vids keep it up
What was so bad about the Netflix adaption ? It seemed pretty good to me all things considered besides the weird timeline thing
Wow, another Witcher video! And right in time for Nightmare of the Wolf (which is about a week away), thanks!!
Pretty informative video in general for the Witcher lore, and love how you're using the anime film Vesemir design for this.
Civ Ex, how much are you looking forward to the film?
Very much, the trailers look great. I have another witcher vid coming out next Sunday in prep for the movie. Then I will have more in Nov and Dec for season 2.
We're you the voice in man in the high castle when they announce hitlers death?!?!
Because man that sounds ridiculously like you !!!
So is this series going to be about the rise of the Witchers or a specific witcher, the witchers in their hayday... Or what?
It's an animated Netflix movie about Vesemir and the downfall if the wolf school.
My question is the Witcher timeline too short considering all that has happened from first sorcerer to modern day
Nordlings arrived in the late 8th century, and the books take place in the late 13th century. So about 500 years have passed since the first Sorcerers learned about magic in this world. The books don't actually contain that much history, pretty much just what I've showed in these videos. The history of this world has been expanded by other books, comics and games, but those sources are not considered canon because they were not written by the author, so I don't include almost any of that info in these videos.
@@CivilizationEx I get what your saying 500 years just seems fast to get to the northern kingdoms we see
@@ZegetaX1 That's true, but I think it's mostly because they stole lands and settlements from the elves and had the help of magic.
@@CivilizationEx that’s good point forgot the stolen land
