Kimber 1911 pistols generally look nice and offer a lot of desirable features. But there is something you need to know before you buy one of these guns.
Kimber 1911's often end up in the hands of newer shooters due to their fancy looks, feature set and excellent marketing strategies. However, even though these guns can be pretty expensive, that doesn't mean you're paying for reliability. And that's why I wanted to share this information with any new potential gun owner out there who doesn't know any better.

Same with mine, though it's more like 15 years old...but the Kimber I bought new for like $700 also works great, a bit tight, but great...he forgot to mention Kimber has a lot of nice sub $1k options.

I have 7 Kimbers, zero problems out of six.
One is the Kimber carried by Lalo in "Better Call Saul", never been fired, and never will while I own it.

Back in the 80's, when we picked up 45's from the armory on base to qualify with, they rattled like a drawer full of kitchen pans.
I have an MC loaded operator from springfield armory in .45. Worked great out of the box, works great now, thousands of rounds and years later
I guess there's a reason why kimbers are available, when others are not. I was thinking about one, but thank you. Now I will pass.
It also helps when people research something before just buying the coolest, shiniest thing. Kimber has been finicky for a long time and people still buy them without learning any them first. If I had major issues with the first pistol I spent a bunch of money on, I sure as hell wouldn't buy 2 more before realizing maybe there was an issue.
Every friend I know that has had a Kimber 1911 has had issues: .45, 9mm, 10mm doesn’t matter. Even after polishing the feeding ramp and throat they’ve all had feeding problems and the slide would not go all the way into battery even after a solid break in and trying a variety of ammo. I looked at them too at one point. I have a Rock Island cheapy that works great and I love my Sig Nightmare. I have 2 friends with Sig STXs and both are amazing, another with a S&W 1911 with Scandium frame that works great and friends with Colt 1911s and Springfield and all work excellent. I’ve heard nothing but bad things about Kimber 1911s from a bunch of sources and that’s a shame given the price point.
My wife and I have a few Kimber 1911s. They all work just as well as any other tight tolerance 1911 assemblies.
You can have super reliable 1911s that rattles when you shake them because they are so loose OR tight shot grouping tight tolerances 1911s with all the related issues to work out over time OR spend $$$ to hopefully get one with the tight tolerances and the bugs worked out (custom or hand fitted).
Kimber is a big name known for the fit and finish. You are generally getting a piece of art that should be in a shadow box on your wall and not carried around.
A visit to a competent gunsmith should resolve all of the tolerance issues and make it reliable.
Remember ANY firearm with tight tolerances should be cleaned more frequently than one with loose tolerances. Keep it lubed well.
1911s were originally designed for BALL AMMUNITION. Some run fine with anything but the tighter the tolerances the more likely they will be finicky about the ammunition they use.
So: you can have a super reliable rattletrap or a super tight shot group unreliable pretty 1911. Or you can spend the time and money to make the fit a bit more compatible and increase reliability while keeping most of the shot group precision AND keeping the legendary Kimber look.
Just know what you are buying and how you will correct any deficiencies.
I’ve had a kimber full size CDP that I purchased in the very early 2000’s. Never had any of those issues with the gun. It has been very reliable and a great shooter.
I purchased a Kimber ultra about 10 years ago. I can only assume that quality control was better. It has only had issues if I didn't clean it regularly.
Ive had two kimbers, polymer stainless target from many years ago, and it was flawless. My TLE that i traded my other kimber for was also pretty good. Sold that for an early 1944 Remington Rand A1 and never looked back. I dont shoot 1911 enough to require all the flash and precision of modern whiz-bang go-fast 1911, but if i in the market, id take a bet with Kimber.
I have four Kimbers: three full size and one Ultra Carry. One of the full size models gave me fits until I started using Tripp magazines. Then it was fine. Also, in his book Gun Guy, Bill Wilson states the three keys to 1911 reliability are extractor tension, magazines, and ammunition. If your pistol is having reliability issues, those are the places to start looking.
TLDR: Don't get a Kimber because they sell a gun that isn't finished, requiring you to spend extra time and money to finish what they couldn't.
Any gun requires break in they need to include break in ammo with the gun purchase.

Lapping compound and dykem is the secret sauce for tight tolerance weapons.
I bought a Rock Island 1911 kit, and bought an 80% lower and machined it myself then fitted the parts myself. It's flawless and only paid around $300.00 for the rock island kit.
If shtf, are you going to send it back to manufacturer?
Build it yourself and learn how to repair it.
I only buy Kimber magazines, or Rock Island mags. I do have several military colt mags that I grabbed a long time ago😉

Polish your rails and feed ramp with Flitz and felt cone on a dremel and save $1000. Sounds like a deal to me. I have 3 Kimbers and they all run great. I only had to Flitz one of them. They are the OEM frame and slide for many high end brands. Les Baer is one that comes to mind. Don’t hate Kimber. Just work through the break in period, use decent ammo and you will have a fabulous.45 that will serve you well.
@minutemanrocketstove4195 u really ought to watch the other videos he has on this... this is a 10mm but had internal parts that belonged to a different caliber and in order to operate needed grinding and polishing before it'd ever work on the 10mm. That's a big deal and is sh!t to deal with on a new +$1000 luxury firearm. U ought to have the full story before handing out advice about not talking bad on a product.... ur just making yourself look silly now

A slide stop was the only part that was problematic. Kimber isn’t the only US brand that installs over sized slide stops or polymer main spring housings on 1911’s!
@BillHunclebuncle guys like me huh? Apparently u haven't watched the other video either.... what I said is precisely what happened and Kimber admitted to it. That normally their 10mm ejector, extractor and other parts are made up of parts originally made for a different caliber and that they get altered in house to work reliably in the 10mm.... and they said it may have slipped through QC.... the replacement they sent him was visibly different than the 1 in the gun originally but MP had already done the appropriate alteration before he received the appropriate 1 in the mail.

I almost bought a Kimber Stainless TLE II but got a Springfield TRP Stainless instead for a little more. I’ve been very happy with the TRP.
I own a Springfield TRP as well. Phenomenal 1911. Love mine.

I got my Kimber Custom about 25 years ago. They were known for "custom quality out of the box" back then but I knew it was a factory made handgun. It was my first firearm. $600 back then. A Series 70 version (no firing pin safety) before their Series II (Series 80) version came out. Kimber made a great 1911 but it came with a cheap mag. Replacing the mag with Wilson Combat fixed the occasional failure to feed issues. Having a good mag is just as important as the pistol itself. It's been very reliable overall. Been through many recoil springs and had to replace a worn slide catch but other than that, it's run great... when I can afford to shoot it. A box of 50 rds could be had for $8 back when I got it. I used to shoot it a couple times a month with 250-300 rds fired per trip to the range. I even carried it as a EDC for many years. It's just a range toy now that I take to the range maybe twice a year. About 4 years ago, I finally joined the 9mm club so my trusty 1911 has been sidelined for more economic options but I'll never trade it. I got a couple Sig 9mm handguns now which are fine firearms but they aren't my trusty 1911.

I don't hold a company in high regard if I have to run 500 rds through their product before we know if it truly works or not. Maybe that's just me but I never even consider a Kimber for this reason.

Just sold mine a few months ago. It used to stovepipe all the time. I think it was just the kimber magazine. After a few years of very infrequent shooting I think it finally broke in and seemed to function reliably after that. But still it wasn’t a practical carry pistol, heavy, low capacity, slide is difficult to rack. So I finally unloaded it. I think it was finally in a reliable state so the new owner should be happy with it. It’s a beautiful gun. Just didn’t meet my needs any more.

Bro Wilson Combat Magazines are a must for the Kimber 1911 Firearms. That switch solves most of the Kimber production issues.
My recent purchased Kimber came with the Kimber magazine, but the Wilson Combat (or a clone) follower. I think Kimber already caught up into that and they made the change. I still bought a 10 round Wilson Combat magazine just for the capacity.😁
Dang blast it. Another informative video. I own many 1911’s. I own a Kimber and it sits in my safe, never fired to the stories which came after I purchased it. Your video makes it clear of what I need to do, and get a fix for it. (I will run 500 rounds through it in the next few days, “wham bam thank you….” The last few cautionary fire arms, Prepper videos are excellent. Keep up the fantastic work. Makes me feel better.

I learned in the corps that if your 1911 doesn’t rattle, it’s not reliable.
I had a RIA that I changed the firing pin and spring out on as well as added a buffer kit. Ran like a champ for being a budget 1911.
I almost f$@led up and bought a kimber.bought a stainless Springfield garrison instead…then a Ronin….then an Operator-they all run like a watch,for less money than a kimber.
SA makes good 1911's. My first 1911 was a SA loaded. Never had an issue.
FYI a stock Springfield mil-spec 1911 is problem free . Shoots Hollow points no problem. I always run chip McCormick mags though and you can buy the guts for the springer mags.
I have a Kimber Stainless II (which is basically the same thing without the squigly milled cuts) I can't relate to what you are saying because my experience was different. Mine came from the retailer with a cracked slide by the ejector. Which led me to believe the retailer took it out for a spin with hot loads before putting it out for sale as a new gun. with the tag still attached to it, I sent it to Kimber and they fitted a new slide, but also noticed they did work on the chamber and feed ramp, which led me to believe that the problem I read so much about on the internet about Kimbers, is due to a very tight cut chamber that will have issues with off the shelf ammo that can vary in tolerances. Needless to say, I never had to brake it in, since ever since I got it back, it has not have any malfunctions, no matter what ammo I use. By the way, I only paid $800 for mine, which I think it was a steal for a now custom shop grade 1911.
The ruger sr1911 is excellent out of the box and will cycle anything I have thrown in it. 799.
i too was tricked on looks i have 5 kimbers no more wont buy again.last one was a rapide black ice 10mm every mag had 3to 7 jams sent it in they fixed that but had new issues .worked fine with target loads when you shot hot hollow points it would smash rounds ejecting.found the extractor was made out of nickle not hardend tool steel got a wilson combat works good.also look at the ejector all of mine have came loose.changed the recoil spring from 18.5 to light to a 24lb wilson flat wire after 3700 rounds later all ok. dan wesson 1911s are far better have 3 all work perfect good show thanks
Try Wilson Combat springs and mags and a polished feed ramp will probably fix any feed issues. Extraction issue? Try adjusting (bending inward) the extractor for a tighter grip on the shell casing. effin Kimbers...
My Rock Island 1911 full size 45 ACP runs flawless after over a thousand rounds. Never had a problem. I only run Wilson combat Mags and springs and Federal ammunition. Super smooth gun right out of the box zero issues.
Save your money and buy a Tisas. Use the saved money to buy ammo.
when i got my first kimber 15 plus years ag. It had failure to battery malfunctions like crazy. a little looking investigating and i found the kimber uses something like 11 pound mainsprings and wilson uses 17 or 18 pound springs. So i picked up the wilson spring kit for 30 bucks, swapped out all the springs and bam. been as reliable as my glock. i was disappointed for sure but happy i figured it out. i have the TLE/RLII so after 1200 bucks i had to buy a 30 dollar spring kit was for sure ridiculous. not bashing them i love mine but ya quality control need improvement.
I did the exact same with my custom II 10mm. It works now.
I’ve had a Kimber 1911 for 21 years now. It has ran flawlessly over the years. I’m happy with it.
Gonna have to add this to my long list of Magic Preppers: "interesting things about guns I had never heard of anywhere else". Appreciate it! I've heard a lot about Kimbers and the fact that they had some vague issues here and there, but no one ever nailed it down like this. Cool stuff.
If I wasn't constantly watching out for the perpetual shadow of WW3iden I'd actually consider getting one and trying to do the filings myself and learning how all that stuff works as it is a good idea to have those skills in general. So I can see some value.
I can promise you my Kimber Raptor II was the most beautiful and expensive price of unreliable 💩 I’ve ever owned.
Kimber’s customer service is abysmal. They want you to shoot $600 in ammunition through an alleged Custom Shop pistol before they’ll even look at it under warranty.

Before you buy one you should know don't waste money on a 1911
A properly made 1911 will run as reliable as any modern gun but the price point to get one is honestly stupidly high. Dan Wesson's are where you see true quality and reliability but you also start them at around $1800 and go up from there.
@@ArtofHunter when pigs fly a 1911 will run as reliable as a glock. I can see if it's a collector's piece but there's no reason to spend $1,800 on one. Then it's impossible to find a holster/mags, holds 8 rounds, it weighs a ton and has a manual safety. It's an expensive paperweight imo

@@414violence I guess they're flying then. I own 3 DW's and not a single issue between them. 2 in 45 and 1 in 10mm. Combined I have around 2500 rounds between all 3. Granted my Glock 19 probably has 4k by just itself. Again I'm not saying a modern firearm is stupid or anything. Glocks work and are cheap. Whileas good 1911's aren't cheap. If someone doesn't have a lot of income I'd tell them to just buy the Glock imo.
I owned a Kimber LW for several months. Had feed problems literally 1-3 times per magazine. Tried at least 5 different brands of 230gr ball, all with same results. Kept it lubed everywhere they recommended before and during every range trip. I emailed Kimber and they told me about the break-in period (they said 500-800 rounds and ignored that I was already close to 400 rounds through it).
Eventually I got to around 800 rounds, must have tapped the back of that slide 250 times during that period to get it into battery. Never got any better. Tried getting ahold of Kimber again, and never heard back. Finally traded it in for a Springfield Defender. Never one issue with the Springfield right from the box, I’m just as good a shot with it, and didn’t have to waste hundreds of dollars “breaking in” a new gun. Will never buy Kimber again.

Well thanks for the info. I've never could justify the price for a Kimber. I've got a Charles Daily and as long as I run good magazines with it no complaints. It does not like Chip McCormick mags but, they do work for functional drills.
For that price point just get a Sig 1911
There were a lot of 1911s that are excellent out there. However I sold Guns for many years and Kimba happens to be some of the best Guns made including in 1911. I have never seen one come back to us. I know people that own them and use them and they love them. Never had any problems now what you’re talking about could be something new with some new problems, maybe they’re farming stuff and not doing everything themselves anymore I don’t know, but in the past, they like gold they work like a charm
I’ve had 2 local gun shops that I’m a regular customer flat out tell me to not buy a kimber. The one says it’s the most returned brand for warranty work.
I'm just going to buy a reliable firearm instead, for half, or even a quarter of the price.
I have a Springfield armory mill spec. Accuracy is great assuming I do my part. Fit is pretty tight. Slide moves like it's on ball bearings. I'm perfectly satisfied with it. Great 45 for the $.
My two tone stainless custom 2 has run great!
That's exactly why I have a Sig gsr revolution 2006 vintage all parts are machined and hand fitted no mim.
My pro carry 2 works fine but my micro carry on the other hand doesn't always eject rounds and has double feed at times
Springfield range officer compact has run flawlessly with everything I have ever fed it
i bought a Taurus pt 1911 in stainless steel and it has run well for me for over 7 years, don't have to spend a ton to get a good gun
My wife and I own several 1911 my favorite one is my Kimber pro carry sle but that said never had any problems with it or any other kimber I own

Got a good friend who worked at their Troy, Alabama plant for a while. Didn’t hear any horror stories except with people they hired with no idea about ANY gun stuff and trying to train them.
As a competitor, my closest fellow shooters, may carry Kimber’s for EDC, but none of them use their Kimber’s in my USPSA classification. The reason is realizability and smooth functions on the later stages. My closest friend says they need complete cleaning after 50 or 75 rounds.
If you want a brand name to shoot occasionally or you're a competition guy, spend the money on a brand name. I like Tisas and Rock Island. The only issues I have had with them were operator induced.
I've been well pleased with my Kimbers, though I've never had an interest in the Raptor due to the style of slide cuts. Never a single failure. I own a few higher end semi-customs and full-on customs, so I do know the difference. I don't have a problem with shooting 500 rounds through a gun to break it in. Range time is fun time. Any idea how much time you have to spend breaking in a new outboard motor?
I bought a kimber raptor 20 ish years ago it jammed up every other round I paid 1400 or so in early 2000 money for it. I took it back and traded it in for a Benelli super express. I haven’t even looked at one since.

Ironic as I too had a Raptor that gave me a ton of issues. Only Kimber CS refused to help me so I sold it and haven't looked at Kimbers since either.
I owned two Kimbers about twenty years ago. A first series and a series II. Both were jammo-matics. Never again.
I have a Kimber .380 CDP custom shop. Granted its a small caliber cc gun but I have had Zero issues with it and it was not cheap for a .380 either. I really never carry it but have shot 100's of rounds thru it. I do like it but normally carry my G19 or PSA clone.
I bought a1911 in 10mm flavor, a Taylor& Co. Basically a RIA, just rebranded. Damn thing runs 100 %, an is scary accurate. Like 1.5 in groups at 25 yds, got it on sale during X- mas for 400 out the door, couldn't resist, an X-mas present to myself, lol, no complaints on my part. One thing I don't know if Kimber ever addressed is. The firing cups that surround the firing pin, are plastic, or were. An were known to fracture under stress, as in heat, multiple rounds, cycling the action. Its something for you to look at ?. Thx for the vid Magic

The only 1911 I would own today, other than my colt mkiv series 80, I bought in 1989 is a Wilson Combat or, a Tisas 1911A1 for $300... think about that.. Im not lying about the Tisas
I was so impressed with my Tisas B45 Duty that I bought a Service Special. Tisas are rock solid 1911’s. Accurate, reliable, forged frames and slides and no MIM parts. Absolutely the best 1911 you can today for the money. I’ll own a 10mm next.

I asked a gunsmith what handgun do you see with the most issues, his reply ,Kimber. but to be fair my new Springfield TRP with over 800 rounds thru it (with the tight tolerances) is a jamamatic even after having sent it back to Springfield twice. They blamed it on aftermarket magazines, apparently my CM Products RPM magazines are junk. My kingdom for a reliable 1911 !
I have two 9mm Kimber 1911's. The Custom 2 I have runs just as good and has been as reliable as my Glock 17, its truly a fantastic 1911. My Ultra carry had problems with 115 grain ammo, but ANYTHING higher grain then that and it runs Flawlessly. I use Wilson combat mags and Cobra mags. My 9mm Rock Island 1911 has always been a problem child, I have changed and tuned the extractor, polished the feed ramp, along with a multitude of other "fixes" UGH, it never has run right.
Makes one wonder about the Kimber 9mm and Micro 9mm quality. Years ago I had to send my then-new Firestar 45ACP back for fitting and throat-polishing. Had problems with stove-pitting on the range..
Think I'd still buy the Ruger Redhawk 45LC/45ACP revolver.

I assume so. Maybe they check for signs of wear but who knows?
My TLE/RL ii runs like a scaled dag...like others have stated, upgraded mags are the fix.
I have 5 Kimber's it has almost 20,000 rounds threw it It's never failed to eject failed to feed. Also any gun that is tight they Wil to not clean it put your 500 threw it reason is to finish breaking it in..
If you have a kimber, and if you don’t want to trade/sale it. Buy Wilson mags, and if need parts swap parts with Wilson parts.
I had a few kimbers over the years. One is around (blued raptor full size) 8k rounds through and still runs well.
Kimbers are a great project piece, if you have time and money, but there’s many 1911’s might suit your needs.

I never had an issue with my Kimber ultra carry 45acp. I think it’s because it’s a 10 mm. I get it for the cost they should be better.
Had one years back just didn't work out. Most beautiful piece of junk I've had. Traded for a old Browning Hi power.
Both my local gun shops won’t stock kimbers and say that their QC is bad and their customer service is even worse
I had to send my Kimber back due to failure to feed issues and occasionally not going to full battery. I shipped it to them on a Thursday and I received it back repaired and in great shape the following Thursday. I would say their Customer Service is solid as hell.
I was pissed that my brand new $900 Kimber had to be sent back so I spent an extra $1000 and bought a Dan Wesson (before I sent my Kimber back). Lo and behold the Dan Wesson shot fantastic, however, it failed one of the basic safety function tests and I sent it back to their warranty repair. It had random occurrences when I released the thumb safety the hammer would drop to half cock. I sent it back, and they had it for 2 and a half months, and when I got it back, it wasn't what I had sent them. They mixed up the shipping labels and I got back someone else CZ 75. I finally got my Dan Wesson back and it shoots fine and is repaired but the turnaround time was terrible for the higher-priced Dan Wesson than the mid-range Kimber. I love both of them so don't get me wrong.
I did not know at the time I purchased my Dan Wesson that CZ-USA had bought them several years ago and still sells them as Dan Wessons. CZ-USA also bought Colt Firearms since then as well and appeared the expanded way too fast causing their customer service to be terrible and understaffed.
WHile I love my Dan Wesson and it is the best of my three 1911s (Springfield TRP, Kimber Ultra Carry 2, and San Wesson V-Bob) I don't know that I would ever by another CZ-USA product again due to the bad customer experience I had.
I have a Ruger 1911 in 10mm . It’s a good gun. It gets scorned by the 1911 purist fudd gang but WTH, it runs good . I’ve had a lot of spec ops and swat guys tell me they would never own one ..
BEST 1911 I EVER BUILT was an Essex frame made in 1913, Caspian slide, Trijicon sights, Smith Alexander mag well and all Wilson guts all polished out to super slick. Let my Doctor talk me out of it, I got his Kimber and 2 grand.. But best out of the box has always been Springfield,
Guys if you have 1500 dollars or more for a 1911 just buy a Dan Wesson Specialist or springfield armor TRP and switch out the stock mags with Wilson combat mags

Rack the slide on a Kimber, Nighthawk and Wilson Combat....then, decide how long it will take you to save up for a Nighthawk or Wilson Combat.
Yes however the Stainless Steel parts are part of the problem, the fact is the pistol needs a lot of lube to prevent galling this is friction welding this can look weld SS together looks like leading in a barrel.often seen around the chamber, barrel, barrel bushing it can lock up a weapon and an SS gun can turn in to a jammo-matic some good old boys will mix up,
Motor oil and STP to prevent this and keep the gun running I don’t remember the exact mix there may have been other fluids in but the mixture was recommended for amt long slide hard ballers lots of learning on the AMT in Stainless Steel. If it was me would use 8 oz Mobil pure synthetic motor oil. 4 oz STP oil treatment, and about 1 Tablespoon of molybdenum DiSulfate. Apply this mix liberally to the slide, outside of the barrel and inside of the bushing matting surface of the rails This stuff will polish the bearing surfaces and burnish the moly Z in to the Stainless. under high pressures don’t try to get by with water based lubricants like KY or Astro glide they will not take the pressures.
I still have 500 rounds of 5.56 mm coat bullets the biggest issue may be the cleanses in the chamber and keep all lube out of the barrel and chambers.

My new TRP is the first stainless pistol I have owned. I wanted to see what is recommended for proper care/maintenance/lubrication. I found a thread on here about lube/grease, and it seems like a lot of people like Slide Glide Lite. I ordered some of that last night. Currently I have just been using some Outers Nitro Solvent to clean, and their gun oil after for lubrication.
Can you guys tell me beyond the Slide Glide I ordered some other products to consider that may be better suited for optimal care of a stainless pistol? Also the manual had some very vague statement about stainless needing to be oiled. Does the whole pistol, including exterior surfaces need to be wiped down with a light coating?
I have also heard people mention silicone rags what is the benefit/purpose?

Guncrafter sent me a tube of RIG +P stainless lube with the Stainless CCO that I bought.
I typically use a homemade mixture of 1/2 ATF (automatic transmission fluid) and 1/2 engine assy. lube.
It works great on everything.
All guns are cleaned after shooting and wiped down with a silicone cloth anytime they have been handled.
