Group B was bonkers. The RS200 crash in Rally Portugal (3 dead 33 injured) and after a month, Henri Toivonen in Corsica brought this class to an end.
But that Fiat...driven by Walter Rohl in Rally Portugal, 7 March 1980, Arganil stage (42km). Before he went to sleep the night before, he memorized the hole stage, every corner and bump. When morning came (and it was his birthday), the stage was covered in fog, no more than 5m of visibility. When the stage started, his co-driver started to tell the pace notes, but he didn't had any visual markers. So he decided to count the seconds (3,2,1...) when he heard "corner 60m"... end result, 35m15s for the stage and 3m48s lead! Just awesome. I think there is a documentary about it (in German).
One of my kid memories is watching a skinny rally driver eating pasta from a fog lamp cap. He was doing some testing with Subaru. I thought rally drivers came from a different planet and watching that just brought me closer to the sport. Richard Burns was his name.

With Henri Toivonen on hand to put the car through its paces and being able to use full boost (2.2 Bar on the S4 to produce in access of 560bhp) something that could be rarely done due to the size of the stages in a Rally. Yeah, it's a 1.8/2.0L 4-cyl engine. And that's the caveat to the 'hold my beer' sentiments: the few restrictions in the Grp B rules, and a run of transmission failures (i.e utterly grenaded) blunted the power output. They had to rein it in a bit.
Had Grp B's successor Grp S, gone ahead, Lancia had a completely reworked Delta S4 in the mill that employed Ferrari F1 tech. Minimum 760bhp iirc.

@@creepingjesus5106 my father was working in FIAT Lancia group and retired in 1994. He was involved in development of the engines since FIAT lancia used the same facilities (engines dev and test labs). They were testing ECV2 engine and pushed some of them far beyond S4. He told me that they were aiming at 1500HP for race use (the level was nearing 1HP x cm3 similarly to F1 of that era). He was disappointed because such powers would have rendered the car extremely dangerous if not uncontrollable.

    • @creepingjesus5106

@@xiter8868 ECV 2, that was it! I read quite an extensive write up on it (and what was to replace the Metro 6R4, that kinda became the MG EXE concept car) maybe a year or two after Grp S was definitely not going to happen. Some of the technical insights from both, were fascinating. I'd have loved to have been in those labs and workshops! You'll know the Fiat Group end of things better, but on the MG end, there were things like the 'axial' turbo that ABB were developing (think of it more like an air raid siren in form), and some very trick 4wd with Gartrac.
Of course not all of this went in the bin, quite a lot of it 'trickled sideways' to rallycross teams with deep pockets, and the notorious Audi 90 IMSA cars benefited too. We can still speculate and dream though!
(Thinking about it, didn't Davide Cironi get a drive of the museum's ECV 2 a few years back? That would be a real treat.)

The Fiat 131 Abarth's engine is a 16 valve, so four valves per cylinder. Also, there's not five years between these, the car might have been used in 78 but the 131 project goes back to 74. In between these two, there was still the Lancia 037. Another fun fact... the S4 is basically a tubular chassis monster with a fibreglass body that looks roughly like a Delta. It was so fast that Toivonen once lapped the Estoril circuit in Portugal (from a standing start!) fast enough to get himself halfway on that year's Formula 1 GP grid.

Amazing to see how much this gentleman's appearance has changed since his Petrolicious video just a few years ago, but even more amazing is his passion about cars, firebreathing italian rally cars to be exact. That passion carries on and I am so happy guys like him exist. Great video once again

“They built really boring road going versions.” - The S4 Stradale, worth £200k+ 😂

::: HammerStudiosGaming ::: yeah, hardly boring regardless of value, I’d almost take a stradale over a works example, simply for road usability.

They definitively are way more boring from a performance perspective, which is what he meant

I enjoyed watching Jay act like a child with this car. Plus, I have always wanted to see how a GroupB car would perform. I am impressed less then 3 seconds 0-60 in the 80's. That is amazing. Let's bring GroupB back for back.

Thank you so very much. Please bring back our delightful "Dodgy Irish Guy" and more of his mad rally cars. It reminded me of watching the Group A, B and N Rally racing, Mazda RX7s, Porsche 911s, Ford RS200, RS500, Lancia Delta Intergrales, Subaru WRXs and Toyota Celica GTFours in the late 1970s, 80s and 90s. Thank you for entertaining and sharing.

Why not mention the rallycar driver? His name was Henri Toivonen RIP. But it was an amazing time in Rally... Audi Quattro, Peugeot 205 etc...

Henrik DK and you should also mention the co driver Sergio Cresto

-Toivonen was a talented driver but he took a lot of risks on rally stages.

Working without a script, it was probably more respectful to talk about him without mentioning his name than to get his name wrong.

5 seconds in Jay already between lanes cutting people off lmao. Sweet car. Wish we had more old euro cars over here.

I miss the old group Bs. Lancia Delta S4, Lancia 037, Peugeot 205 T16, Ford RS200, Audi Quattro, Metro 6R4.
Rallying was so much fun back then although crowd control was virtually unheard of.
The characteristic noises coming from these engines was pure magic
