We take to the day to visit Sabugal and Sortelha. The area of Sortelha is really quite something and we would highly recommend adding it to your travelling plans. The views were pretty spectacular and the area itself was full of beautiful features.

I thought you had to cut mushrooms not pull them up by their roots I think it's so they can regrow the next season.

Hi Anita this is not the case no. It doesn't make any difference to the next years fruiting bodies if you pull up the Volva. Mushrooms don't have roots per se. They actually grow from underground mycelium networks. It could be argued that it is better practice pull the whole volva (the large ball on the bottom of these mushrooms) some have a swelled volva some don't and this feature can be used to help with identification and cross referencing against other potentially harmful and similar looking mushrooms. If there is 5 clustered in the same place like this I would assume there is a pretty well establish mycelium network around these trees and mushrooms will fruit in that same spot every season.
