Viseu is my favorite province in whole Portugal. Nowhere else you can find such a cheerful landscapes with winyards and stone buildings everywhere. Definitly underrated. You forgot to mention for several consqutive years it was ranked as the best city to live in Portugal.

I love everything I see in Viseu, but my wife says no immediate train access is a deal breaker...makes me sad.

It's really sad, it's the worst thing about Viseu, the biggest city in Portugal without train. It even exists people who says that it's the biggest city in Europe without train.
The nearest train station is in Mangualde, about 20 kms, 10 min by the highway A25, it's really close if you go by car.
But in this moment the train line that passes in Mangualde is closed for line improvement, in some months it will open with better conditions.
