One of the things my dad did for me was take me out for my first date. He showed me all the right things a good date would do. Putting the focus on me, opening doors, listening to me, not being rude to the waiters, asking me where I would like to eat, etc. At the end of the night he said to me, "I can trust you to make sure that anyone you go out with will treat you with the same respect that I hope I have shown you tonight." I think it is not about intimidation from a father, it is about a parent trusting that you have planted the proper seeds for your child to make the right decision.
Agreed!!! If a dad doesn’t treat the mom with a lick of respect or his mother with a lick of respect a girl won’t expect that from a date. So when I came home and told my parents that I was asked out for my first date my parents said you can go out with that boy AFTER he invites us to meet his parents. Just so I could see if his dad treated his mom correct and how he treated his mom and sisters. And he passed that first step. And when he showed up to pick me up. My Dad just looked at him and said treat her like you would want someone to treat your sister. Then have her home BY 11 pm. And sure enough he pulled in my parents drive way at 10:55 pm. We were married 3 years later, and 3 days after graduation from high school. We just had our 35 wedding anniversary. So yep that system worked out beautifully for us as a couple and for raising our kids.
