Spectrum gaming definitely has its own definitive and fun style. A lot of 2d mobile games play like the old speccy games. Great to see these new next games have the same playability as the old games.
Thanks for the recommendations, man. Hugely appreciated, as I had to pack my Next away for a year or so and have only just found time to dig it out again. Now I have some things to catch up on!
good selection of Spectrum Next - bit gutted I didnt order one in the most recent crowdfunder! Imagine how successful the next would have been back in 1988. Thanks for the review
@Preston Thomas Retro Virtual Machine is an awesome piece of software, I use it all the time but feel it doesn't seem to get much recognition. Great news that it will support next emulation in a future update 😃👍🏻
Intalled ZX Spectrum Next on the Mister, just because it's there, even though I know zero about UKomputers. USA went from Atari to C64 to DOS and Sega/Nintendo, basically. Anything to try on the turn-based strategy side? Looking for games with maps.
Probably best to check this list out: www.specnext.com/software-directory/ There are plenty of turn based games for the original Spectrum which will work with the Next core. Take a look at Laser Squad or Rebel Star.
Can you load your old 48k Spectrum tapes, transfer them to the Next and store them on either internal memory or SD card so you have instant access to them?
@@theretroasylum Thanks, I would love to see how it's done. I have all my Spectrum tapes from the 80's that I never use now, if its easy enough to do I will buy the Next.
It has an MMU, and you can page in parts of layer 2 as you want/need. In addition, there's still the ULA pixel buffer, as well as sprites and a tilemap layer, much as on the NES, Master System, and C64.
Well the second batch has been delayed due to the chip shorted. Basically they had to use a different FPGA board as the company that supplied the ones used for the first version suddenly stopped making them. Trouble is, there is a years back order for the new FPGA board that the Next team decided to go with. So the second batch of Next’s probably wont reach backers until July 2023.

Well there is a clone of the Next call the N Go. Plus if you have a MiSTer FPGA there is a core on that which plays the games perfectly 👍

great line up of games and some cracking ones in development!
Gotta love NEXT!
Great stuff, check out the podcast people!
Thanks Dean - great overview of the games there. I'll be checking some of those out for sure!
Seems to be the perfect mix, the superb detail of the ZX Spectrum, but with the colours of its rivals.
Space Splat was likely inspired by Space Panic from 1980 - similar graphic style
Yes, you a correct.
Just what i needed to see as i wait in eager antipicatuion of my KS2 Next

nice video 👍🏻👍🏻
If only the spectrum next had been released in 1984
Looking great for the Spectrum Next. I hope someone makes a Football Director style management game.
Is that Dizzy game still coming to the Next?
Wonderful Dizzy was released but it didn’t take advantage of the Next hardware.
That has to be the best video intro ever!!
Thumbnail looks like Barry from Auf Wiedersehen Pet 😄
Yeah for some reason Dean was pulling a funny face. He needs to practice his Brummie accent though!
Hands up who thought last ninja was going to be mentioned at the end?!
We would have loved it if that was the case 👍

Yes. You can even load ZX81 programs on it.

The "shooter" game is a clone of Solar Fox (originally a coinop but ported to C64 and even the 2600)
640x256 4bits per pixel 16 colours = 80kb of video ram? thats more than the z80n can see no? 64kb 8bit processor

@@talideon is it fast dual ported video ram or does the processor slowdown like the zx spectrum when video ram is being accessed?
