As a proud 41 year old black man who grew up rooting for Griffey , Kirby Puckett, Frank Thomas , Dave Winfield, Gary Sheffield, Tony Gwynn, Darryl Strawberry and in my hometown.. Eddie Murray and Mike Devereaux… this brings a smile to my face seeing the RBI program pay off … baseball is my first love … and seeing these young African Americans playing this beautiful game brings me joy … i wish more young black kids played baseball instead of predominantly playing football and basketball 💯💯💯💯 my son will be a baseball player

In the south...most black kids in the 80s and 90s grew up playing baseball as their dominant sport....but when traveling baseball and the little league world series became more popular...baseball got really expensive to play...which forced most blacks kids to stick with basketball and football. So, the lack of black baseball players isn't a coincidence. This is great to see tho...it could have the Tiger Woods effect if the hype is real.

This situation happened to me in 1993, travel baseball cost $50 registration fee + weekly travel cost(food & hotel). AAU summer league basketball was funded by 2 local businesses(barber shop & bbq spot),they covered tournament entry fees and provided Tshirts. All travel expenses were paid through fund raisers, mainly car washes, cars washed by the players. Baseball was my 1st love, but the cost killed it for me.

Those Dark skinned Dominicans, they're from Haitian descent. And they are discriminated against enough in the domincan, and then now you here bashing them. Dude, Those dark skinned domincans are from AFRICAN slaves. Didn you know Haiti and Domincan are on the SAME ISLAND. You're confused. I know. Let me explain it. When the Spanish came to the island, just indigenous were there. They quickly died due to disease and murder and slavery. Then came the African slave trade. This Island was a stop to the Americas. Then came the war between the French and the Spanish. Then the hands of the Slaves changed hands when France won. Then another war came and the Island changed hands back to the Spanish. 1 side of the Island, Haiti. Creole. Voodoo. New Orleans path. French influence. Other side of the Island, Spanish Colonial . Dominicans HATE Haitians. Because of their Black skin from African descent, they are often discriminated against. There is a big ESPN article about how messed up it is. But your comment is just stupid. If you are Black, then you should know that their story is one of hardship and discrimination that is on a scale not ever AMerica is on right now and they have dark skin because they are descendants from Africa!... shouldn't go after them.. that's sad. Besides that being wrong with your statement, it's just not sensible.

@wsmokr The issue is they're not even being given the chance. Baseball fields are drying up all over the country. Lot cheaper to make and maintain a basketball court. But you're right, more Black's choose basketball and football. And yeah, why wouldn't you? The money is better. The chance at going pro is better.

@@wsmokr that’s a lie. There are documented studies from the early 2000s of MLB deliberate neglect of inner city youth baseball facilities, teams and tournaments. People are at a point mentally where they have this knee-jerk uncontrollable reaction to ANY mention of any non-whites that's automatically "actually, you're being racist for not talking about whites" OR "you're being woke, and actually oppressing others/me,", and its honestly amazing. The fact you actually think you have a valid point or make sense at all is disturbing.
Reactionaries/contrarians WILL never NOT be embarassing.

Man the future looks very bright for players like him, Elijah Green, and Drew Jones Jr! I followed them through most of their prep careers and look forward to seeing their talents brought to fruition. That being said... Please Stop acting like somebody is blocking off a certain demographic from playing this game. Statistics have shown that the NFL is comprised of at least 70% African American. The number is even higher in the NBA being 80%. Nobody is saying that we need more white, Indian, or Asian players in those leagues are we? Has anyone considered the fact that basketball and football athletic scholarships are headcount scholarships which means they are scholarships paid in full? That would probably present a lot more opportunities for the ability to play the game at the next level then say college baseball that only allows for 11.7 scholarships at the D1 level. Most families are paying to play. Another inconvenient fact is that African American families are 2/3 of the time single parent homes. That brings a lot more difficulties than say a dual parent home that a lot of times offers multiple incomes at the same time. And finally because I know I'm going to get the "You're a racist" comment instead of actually dissecting objective facts. But before anyone goes on to say that systematic racism is so prevalent and that it opposes a certain demographic from all sides, know This statistic as well: as a whole on average Asian Americans and Indian Americans are wealthier than Caucasian Americans. The point being that if there is systematic racism than why are there whole groups that are shown to be more financially successful than "evil whitey?" So everybody on here that is virtue signaling why don't you do some critical thinking and see that nobody in 2023 is stopping any African American from playing baseball. Is it a country club sport, sure it's becoming that way It's definitely getting a lot more expensive. But as I said before there are other sports that African Americans are choosing their own selves, nobody is forcing them, they are actually choosing themselves to play and mind you are quite successful at it. Stop feeding into the narrative that media and politicians are trying to drive which is that everything is race centered. Read some books turn off CNN and MSNBC, think for yourself and dive into some actual facts. Look at Thomas sowell a brilliant man that most liberals will call an Uncle Tom but he is far from that and was once a very radical liberal himself until he started researching the facts and statistics for himself.

You don't think much eh? Money. I agree. But it's not that money. It' s the money that goes into Black communities to give them baseball fields, or basketball fields. No, they aren't giving any money to maintain baseball fields when they can slap some concrete down, put up some hoops. Tie 1 net per year. Or make a chain net that lasts for a few. What's a kid need to play basketball? A basketball. What do you need to play baseball? Ceramic/graphite/composite bat, toe guard, elbow guard, shin guard, wrist guard, batting gloves, glove, cleats, cage time, trackman time, field time, league dues, traveling dues. It's that Blacks and Black communities are priced out of the sport and that's bullshit. Yeah we do need more Black people in baseball. Baseball has thrived due to the many great Black people playing and it'd be sad to see some many from that community never grace our TV's because they're choosing other sports..sports I don't care about. We should have more people of every ethnic background playing. We should be showing our youth what is possible.
