- In the late evening of December 11, 2023, South African Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa broke the news of Zahara's death. This came as a shock to all her South African fans, who were indeed hoping that the musician would recover. In this article, we will look at the events surrounding her death, why she started drinking and her legacy. 2 weeks ago, Zahara was hospitalized for a liver-related complication. While the details were initially blurred, it eventually came out that her liver was damaged beyond any foreseeable recovery, giving rise to the potential need for a liver transplant. The condition that Zahara had is called liver cirrhosis, which is essentially the scarring of the liver to the point of liver failure as a result mostly of chronic alcohol abuse. But those who knew Zahara growing up would say she was anything but a drinker. So, what led to her alcoholism?
Well, this is believed to be the reason. In 2014, Zahara's younger brother was murdered in East London, Eastern Cape. He was found with multiple gunshot wounds and only his cellphone missing. These were really devastating news for Bulelwa, who really loved her younger brother to death. Most people around her say she never truly recovered from this fatal blow. No matter how hard she tried, it seemed like that day couldn't leave her head. As a result, after 2014, she became a heavy drinker and never recovered. Unlike casual drinkers, it seems as though Zahara was using the bottle to forget her pain instead of facing it, but as you can imagine, it can't be easy to face the death of your younger brother, especially if he was murdered.

Liver Cirrhosis can’t be the cause of death in this case. I managed hundreds of terminally ill patients and seen severe cases with advanced chronic medical conditions through the years. Zahara never looked chronically ill.
She had no stigmata of terminal, chronic liver disease at all . She was definitely not at the terminal stage that she would pass on so suddenly.
Her post mortem report will definitely shed some light into her cause of death.
It’s definitely not alcohol related, definitely not medical.
I strongly suspect foul play here.

Exactly they potray her as an alcoholic, she doesn't have the features of a drunkard, we've seen patients who were alcoholics but they r still here, that's a lie, there is something that happened but alcoholic NO, we wud like to hear abt toxicology results cos they will pain a different story

This is so sad, I know how she felt depression loosing loved ones is not easy..
I personally can attest, I went to heavy depression in 2022 after I lost my brother who was so close to my heart. Someone hit him on the head. Saddest part I spoke to him on the phone an hour before his demise. I don't know how I will heal from this trauma.
Again 3months ago I lost my sister to cervical cancer.....I used to be a accasional drinker, but now I stopped to focus on my mental health.

So sad. Zahara was an inspiration to many. Her music was the healing therapy for most people. I for one loved her humility and soberness as a musician. Her music made me to cry. People are different. As a nurse abroad there are a lot of people coming in now with liver cirrhosis due to alcoholism and they are young, everyone system is different so do not say someone drinking for years and did not get the disease should be the same for everyone

I didn't like that guy's interview. How do you start talking about alcohol in an over one-hour interview session? Why not start with her music, business, projects, challenges, etc and then spend the last 5 minutes or so, if she's willing, to talk about sensitive personal matters? One thing i've noted is, after she started drinking, there was no single interview she attended without being asked about alcohol. The lady had more fake people around her than she, you and I imagined.

Zahara had an alcohol problem due to various reasons of course no one can just abuse alcohol for fun a lot was happening in her mind, all the emotional traumas influenced her drinking problem, which is sad because no one paid attention to

So sorry Zahara and family. People can be cruel and envious and focus on the challenges one faces rather than your successes. I feel you suffered trauma after loosing your much loved brother who was yet another victim of our crime laden society that has no respect for our precious lives. And then you lost your sister too a few years later which added to your vulnerability. You weren't given time for your own healing. Sahara was killed by the South Africans media and people talking much about her being not paid her money, we all know when you are a rookie (Mafikizolo) you are not really paid your worth, the second contract could have helped her but she dwelt in the past.
