Merlani O'Bannion is the firstborn child of the rulers of Seedloon, the nation of Naiads.
As someone born with a fire-magic type, her father tries to force her to learn water magic in any way he can, putting through her the hell of dozens of different ways of exerting his force over her. He knows the stigma she would face as the ruler's daughter but having fire magic, so for her sake, he desperately tries everything.
Fed up as time goes on and her not learning, he resorts to progressively more abusive and forceful tactics. Eventually, they give up, and decide to stick to a story that she is incapable of magic.
As she goes through school, she gets picked on by all of her classmates. They call her silly names like "Magic-less O'Bannion", steal her things, push her around, target her in jokes, and all around shove her to the bottom of the social ladder.
Being a girl and being incapable of magic, Merlani is practically shoved into the Creedling caste by the school system.
Due to the hardship she's faced in life, and the new responsibility of serving the lord Aquarum as a Creedling, she transforms into an incredibly wise person, eventually becoming a priest in one of the biggest churches in the capital of Seedloon.
Nobody expects a thing for years.
And then, one day, in a freak accident, Merlani accidentally uses her fire powers in front of a sizeable group of people. The rumor spreads throughout the capital very quickly, and soon she's being given the glare.
She knows they know, and Merlani is forced to re-evaluate her life. Why would she serve the lord, and preach that water is a gift from him, when she apparently wasn't even deserving of said gift?
Merlani disappears, and no one knows where she's gone.
